MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm very late to this, but I was accepted to Harvard's SM80 in Epi this morning with a scholarship!
Wow! Many Congratulations! May I ask which particular track did you apply to in Epi? Thanks

I was an undergrad at Berkeley and I minored in Global Public Health so took a few classes in the dept - the Public Health professors were hands-down some of the best professors I’ve ever had. Their research is referenced everywhere, and Berkeley itself is well-known for research. I hear that the grad student experience is much more personalized than undergrad, and I can also tell you that the PH building is brand new and really cool!
I am seconding this, took loads of PH classes while at Berkeley including a grad class and the professors are phenomenal. Many of them are leaders in the field and names you will hear well after taking their class. Also the new building is amazing, I’ve stayed there over night before for study sessions lol.

That's great to hear! I've heard that classes at Berkeley can get pretty huge (had a friend tell me his horrors of taking intro to CS with like 1000 people!), did you have opportunities to interact with the professors much in your grad class?

Also, I had heard that the program had connections to the wider bay area (UCSF but also I've heard that they had been connected with biotech?)

Also also (sorry) I was going to check out the school this weekend since I live like 15 minutes away (go contra costa county!) but I was curious, where on the campus is it close to the campus center, to the edge of campus, etc.

Another Cal undergrad here who also minored in public health!

Yes! The professors were super friendly and easy to talk to (not all but ya know I'm sure it's like that everywhere). The classes are definitely not crazy packed like undergrad. Downside compared to Columbia is it's definitely not as diverse. In terms of UCSF, yeah I did my undergrad research at UCSF. I don't know how much "connection" but professors definitely have colleagues at UCSF!

It's a couple blocks from the central of main campus! But it's a block from the northern most of campus. It's more downtown. On Shattuck and Hearst I believe. Shiny glass building!

Go CoCoCo 🙂 you’re not going to have to worry about that with PH classes, especially grad classes. If you have to take bio stats that would probably be on the bigger siDe but nothing close to the rumors. My grad class was only 10 people and I got to know everyone, including the professor, very well!

the new PH building, Berkeley way west is right off the north western corner of campus. 5 minutes walk from Bart and target, lots of bus access. It’s definitely one of the better buildings at Cal and has a Noah’s bagel and udon place built in!!!

FINALLY heard back from GWU about financial aid (presidential and Tauber!) after being admitted way back in November. I have NO idea how I'm going to choose between GWU, Drexel, Brown, Boston, and UPenn. Very humbled by my admissions offers. Feeling lucky to have such a hard decision to make before April 15!

I have been accepted for MPH in Epi with a certificate in Chronic disease at Columbia and I wish to change it. Has anyone done that? Is it possible?
I have changed my certificate, just message the admissions office with clear instructions and they will do it for you. You can apparently also change it later on if you wish.

I spoke with a current student about this, and she said that you technically formally declare your certificate later in your first semester. She went in undecided and they encouraged students to use the core to explore and determine her certificate since you get a little bit of everything in the core.

This thread was helpful! To my understanding, SMS and Popfam faculty have different interests. As I was looking through the program before applying, SMS tries to get to the root of health disparities (housing, healthcare access, systemic inequality, etc). In contrast, Popfam focuses more on community-level issues (mch, water quality, etc) and how to address those. In an info session last semester, one admissions counselor put it this way: "SMS stresses the understanding & addressing of social forces that influence health. Population health focuses more on helping people get the treatments they need."

I applied to SMS because the faculty interests better met my needs and interests, but I know someone at Columbia said it isn't uncommon for people to switch from SMS to Popfam.
Thanks for the response! That makes it easier to understand now.

I’m interested in tobacco use, immigrant/refugee health, and health promotion, and program design/implement/eval so I thought SMS would fit but now I’m thinking Popfam would be better for me 😭 but maybe since my certificate is in health promo research & practice, it wouldn’t really make a difference? Idk 🥴

At a session with SMS professors and current students, there were some that worked with tobacco use, and the health promotion certificate is (partially – I think) housed within SMS. I think your department will depend on how you want to approach these issues more broadly (root of issues or the issues on the community level) – I'm not terribly familiar with Popfam, so I can't give definite advice for this, though. I would look at the required courses for each and see which curriculum best fits you!

Honestly, I wish I knew some of you guys IRL! I’m on this page so much. It’s one of the first things I check when I wake up 🤣

I am thinking we should have a Zoom/Google Meet call sometime closer to when people have committed to their schools (April 1st weekish) and ready to embark on an excellent journey (or defer). At least we can get to meet each other and say "thanks and goodbyes" for now?

Thoughts?

i’ve decided to switch into health policy if u wanna talk through your decision lmk!

Just heard from GW and received a presidential scholarship! Very grateful but I really wish I would hear back from Columbia about financial aid... I would commit in a heartbeat if I had received this scholarship from Columbia. I shouldn't reach out to them without hearing about aid yet, right?

I'm in the same position, I think we just have to patient with Columbia though since very few people have heard back from them on aid, it's not just us. I think if it becomes a situation where many people have heard from them and I still haven't, I will reach out then. Definitely getting worried because I plan to appeal my aid and would just like to know what I got sooner rather than later, but I suppose there's not much we can do!
