MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm in the same position, I think we just have to patient with Columbia though since very few people have heard back from them on aid, it's not just us. I think if it becomes a situation where many people have heard from them and I still haven't, I will reach out then. Definitely getting worried because I plan to appeal my aid and would just like to know what I got sooner rather than later, but I suppose there's not much we can do!
Glad to know i'm not the only one that feels like this!!

I thought people got accepted last Friday as well? Really want a decision soon 🙁

Someone had mentioned that Fridays were Waitlisted category. I did not see any acceptances yet, but I might have missed seeing it.

Anyone still waiting for a decision from Johns Hopkins MPH?🥺
Yes! Although I am expecting to hear back later (by mid march hopefully??) since I applied late december-ish and it's for the program that starts in November. Even if I don't get in, I'll be happy. Already got so many great choices that I wasn't expecting at all!! Plus I can't find a reason to justify spending $80k for hopkins when I got scholarships to a few other top schools that are also great for my interests.

I just got an e-mail at 11:19 with the Horstmann 60k Scholarship to Yale!! Someone send their financial aid office a care package for working this late!!
It’s really only the one person too! When I talked to her about who to speak to in financial aid, Jen Farkas said “actually, the financial aid office is pretty much just me!” She honestly might be a superhero.

Yes, congrats on all the offers! Debt is such a hard pill to swallow, especially during this pandemic. I’ve been crossing all my fingers and toes for JHU, but it likely will come down to affordability for me too.

Columbia has recently gotten a lot of heat because of the way they've handled things, and it's made me heavily doubt my decision. But if you're like me and are seriously considering it, here are the ultra positive things I've gathered.

1) PH can tend to be a PWI, but Columbia had a students of color session!
2) While the CORE is brutal, it allows you to integrate with people in other disciplines which I'm not seeing a lot of at other schools.
3) Every single person I've talked to absolutely raves about their experiences, many citing their only negative is the CORE is brutla
4) I felt the admit week, people were SO SO SO incredibly responsive and fielding questions and providing resources.
5) The financial aid office (though money wise could use a bit of work) has been reassuring and calm and when I emailed literally everyone (from the Dean to the Director of Programs) everyone emailed me back promptly and with such comfort.

So, although they may have made mistakes, I will chalk it up to human error and that we are in unprecented time. Their past records and student testimony say that they really deserve their status as a world-class leader!

I am telling you, I am getting sick of this trail offer. Waiting for "Harvard" decision is costing me my sanity!

At this point, I will take any offer I get! Harvard or Harry's doesn't matter.

I'll also add, they appear to have a really excellent Career Services office! I've heard great things from students about Career Services and they also provided me with very detailed, extensive information on recent grads' employment outcomes and salaries, something I have not received from any other school.

Just like everyone else, I'm frustrated Columbia isn't going faster with admissions/aid, but I think a lot of people are forgetting how many other schools are being just as slow. Personally, I have not heard a peep from BU or Brown (other than a rather frustrating experience of them having issues with my FAFSA), despite applying in early November. I have not yet received any word of aid from several other schools to which I've been accepted, same as Columbia. The HSPH admissions office was even quite rude on the few occasions I contacted them prior to applying. I think the frustration with Columbia is totally understandable (especially for that yikes false admissions glitch), but if we are going to be upset with them, I feel like we should be just as frustrated with other schools too haha

What’s the most non rude way to ask Harvard if they’ve already rolled out their acceptances?
I moved my schedule around so I could attend the admissions office hours haha (Events and Opportunities). I'm going to ask:

1) Do decisions come out on a single day for each department? If so, do rejections come out that same day too? I'm on a forum and have seen some acceptances for the MPH-65 HBS program but haven't seen many. Are more acceptances being sent out?
2) Do decisions come out based on the date when the candidate completed his/her application?

EDIT: will also preface them with "I'm anticipating my MPH-65 credit decision soon and would love to get some questions answered to relieve some nerves" so they don't think I'm crazy. I just really need to get some answers for my sanity haha.

THANK YOU FROM ALL OF US!!!!!!!!

The fake admission portal was pretty bad, but otherwise have there been other mistakes? Overall, I've had a pretty positive experience with them. They respond to their emails quickly and any meetings with admissions have been super helpful. I was also pretty impressed with the admitted students week webinars.
I feel like they're getting hate for the same things happening with other schools, which is mostly just them taking time on admission decisions.

Are the admitted students webinars recorded? I was wondering if I can view them now since I missed it.

Jen Farkas is an actual superhero. I had a call with her a few weeks ago and she's running the show over there! So sweet and helpful.

Just heard from GW and received a presidential scholarship! Very grateful but I really wish I would hear back from Columbia about financial aid... I would commit in a heartbeat if I had received this scholarship from Columbia. I shouldn't reach out to them without hearing about aid yet, right?
what are your stats

Do you mind asking about SM80 too if you get the chance?? Would really appreciate it 🙂

I haven't heard back from a school yet (applied/verified in early December), and I'm growing concerned. I reached out in mid-January to confirm that nothing else was needed for my application (I wanted to make sure of this before the school's final deadline in early February) and to inquire about when I might hear back. I was told I would hear in 4-6 weeks, and today is officially the 6 week mark.

I'm wondering if I should reach out to them again or if that would be bothersome and might cause them to throw my app in the rejection pile rather than continuing to deliberate. I am remotely attending a conference today that is held by a group based in the SPH and it is making me even more enthusiastic about attending their school. One of the somewhat obscure points I wrote about in my SOP was mentioned in the conference, and I see so many places where my existing research experience as well as the skills I am most interested in gaining through the MPH program are coming up in the conference.

What do we think? Should I: (a) reach out (maybe next week) and just inquire about whether anything else is needed? (b) reach out (maybe next week), inquire about whether anything else is needed, and mention my attendance of the conference and how much I enjoyed it and reaffirm my commitment to entering the field of public health? (c) don't reach out at all? (d) other? TIA!
I'm sorry and can totally understand the frustration and concern. Hang in there! It seems like decisions come out in batches and it may take till the end of March for some schools to respond. Since your last communication was about a month ago, I'd reach out on Monday to ask if any parts of your application are missing and reiterate that you are looking forward to hearing back and remain enthusiastic about this course of study. Wishing you all the best in whichever direction this takes you!

I am thinking we should have a Zoom/Google Meet call sometime closer to when people have committed to their schools (April 1st weekish) and ready to embark on an excellent journey (or defer). At least we can get to meet each other and say "thanks and goodbyes" for now?

Thoughts?
Down for this 🙂

Yes!! Yes!! This!! They have an unprecedented number of applicants and everyone is working from home and it's a crazy world out here!!

I also will second this as a CU alum. It’s an incredible university and likely my top choice even with HSPS pending. Could I personally reach out about the stats re: outcomes and salaries? Very on the fence about switching careers with the salary discussions!

So, I definitely see that schools accept some of their top candidates first and award them a certain amount of scholarships.

Lets say a student gets into 3 top schools, and they give them scholarships. will their scholarships awarded to them from the other 2 schools they chose get redistributed to students of the same cohort? or are they done awarding scholarships?

EX: emory's top candidates, 1/4th of them say no. do their scholarships go to other students within the emory cohort? or is it saved for the next cohort?

For those who heard back from HSPH, are we supposed to be getting an email about financial aid. Not just scholarships but loans, etc. Just want to make sure I totally didn't miss an email or message. Thank you, all.

I do not which one is worse; refreshing the HSPH portal for decision or refreshing SDN for responses and comments. There has been complete silence for the past 30 minutes 😆

I would say divide up the time for both:
sdn 3/4 and HSPH 1/4 of the time bc we have hot live news here 20 hours a day.

takes a month to hear for scholarship dont worry. and the scholarship is only for the 1st year but is able to extend the second if you maintain above 2.0 GPA
2.0 gpa? You must mean 3.0, right?

Yes, it gets redistributed to students in the same cohort I believe. In my merit scholarship email, it says the following:

"Notify the RSPH Office of Admission regarding your decision to accept or decline the scholarship award and your admission decision by submitting your online decision through OPUS, opus.emory.edu by April 15, 2021. If you have already decided to attend another institution, please notify us as soon as possible so we may consider another deserving student."

hey y'all its yah boi Chimz, just letting y'all know this binch got into Cornell MPH and i got a 10K Scholarship

Honestly I didn't think I was going to get in, my grades were not cute and i had an academic integrity letter in my file ssksksks 🙈, but honestly I put my whole pu$$y into writing my letter and talking to professors, so if I can make it y'all can too. Sending much love and vibes to all the future Public Health peeps

Edit 1: HMU if you're going there I went there during undergrad and I can hook you up!

congratulations! also you’re really funny lmao.

Another Cal undergrad here who also minored in public health!

Yes! The professors were super friendly and easy to talk to (not all but ya know I'm sure it's like that everywhere). The classes are definitely not crazy packed like undergrad. Downside compared to Columbia is it's definitely not as diverse. In terms of UCSF, yeah I did my undergrad research at UCSF. I don't know how much "connection" but professors definitely have colleagues at UCSF!

It's a couple blocks from the central of main campus! But it's a block from the northern most of campus. It's more downtown. On Shattuck and Hearst I believe. Shiny glass building!
when you say not diverse... do you mean what I think you mean or ? lol

(At least for the classes I've been in undergrad) the class profile is heavily heavily heavily Asians and White. Don't get me wrong Columbia is also super white and Asian but it feels there more initiative and effort on Columbia's side than Berkeley. This is definitely not a SPH problem but an institutional problem.

edit: also important to note this is an undergrad experience and Cal's sph class is smaller than columbia's and there aren't super straight-forward data
