MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anyone else not considering the rankings in their decisions? For MPH programs they are solely based on peer review and it doesn’t seem like asking some of the faculty and deans at certain schools what they think of other programs would yield meaningful results. The US News rankings for undergrad are already sketch (there’s a great episode of Adam Ruins Everything that talks about it) but these rankings don’t even factor in anything like student satisfaction or post-grad employment. I don’t know though, maybe they have more weight than I think.
I think things such as research funding also factor in - I am considering it because Universities, even if ranked well elsewhere if don't have a large public health school with a lot of funding, connections, etc. I don't think they will get you as far. Although to people outside of public health some schools might sound better, from what I have heard the top schools within the public health world are well known within the public health world and will get you further. I think faculty and deans at these schools are smart enough to base their rankings on meaningful reasons and the US News Rankins wouldn't be so widely considered if they were in reality inaccurate. If you look at top NIH funded schools it is a lot of the same schools at US News and NIH doesn't give these schools millions of dollars for no reason

i think name over ranking makes a difference if that makes sense but im looking at curriculum and career outcomes

Ah thank you! Hopefully this applies to other schools as well
I think it does. It should be Fed's info instead of school's

Thank you!! I just received an email from Yale saying they increased tuition by 2%. So the total yearly tuition is now $48,798.
No problem! Feel free to make changes. It belongs to everybody who finds it useful.

Did anyone get accepted to Columbia Epidemiology this week yet?

Has anyone else heard back from UC Berkeley for Epidemiology/Biostatistics, including rejections? I noticed there was a number of acceptances sent out on 2/19. I know they said that they would get back to us by mid-March, but the anxiety is getting to me! At this point, I'm starting to mentally prepare myself for rejection given the small cohort size at UC Berkeley for Epi...

has anyone applied to university of illinois @Chicago because i applied to them (2/1) and i didnt even get a confirmation email or anything from them saying they got my application and im super confused.. is anyone else in the same boat? 🤔

Trying to compare UW (niche program, community oriented, capstone, access to the population I want to study) to Brown (generalist, thesis).

Will be applying to clinical psych programs after mph. Need the best research experience possible.

I applied to them beginning of November (~11/3) and didn’t get any emails from them between submitting my supplemental app on the graduate application portal and the decision email from my dept (1/22). If you want to make sure they got your application, I would send them an email or check the portal where you submitted their supplemental application.

I found this article from 2018.
Reference for your decision on schools and classes you may want to take. Things might have changed since covid.

Results: We analyzed the data from 1007 global health job vacancies from 127 employers. Among private and non-profit sector vacancies, 40% (n= 354) were for technical or subject matter experts, 20% (n= 177) for program directors, and 16% (n= 139) for managers, compared to 9.8% (n= 87) for entry-level and 13.6% (n= 120) for mid-level positions. The most common technical focus area was program or project management, followed by HIV/aids and quantitative analysis. The thematic analysis demonstrated a common emphasis on program operations, relations, design and planning, communication, and management.
Conclusions: Our analysis shows a demand for candidates with several years of experience with global health programs, particularly program managers/directors and technical experts, with very few entry-level positions accessible to recent graduates of global health training programs. It is unlikely that global health training programs equip graduates to be competitive for the majority of positions that are currently available in this field.

This is enormously helpful, thank you for posting! I wonder if anyone here has insight into which of these areas (especially technical focuses) have perhaps changed since 2016 when this data was collected? Or whereabouts you could find out that info?

I'm new to the field of global health but would also really like to get a sense of what areas (e.g., HIV/AIDS, mental health, environmental health, etc.) are increasing in focus/employment outcomes/funding vs. which are more ramping down.

this is so helpful! it reaffirms my request to change depts

I didn’t know there was supposed to be an interview. When I talked to admissions, they never mentioned it nor is it anywhere on there website. Should I be concerned now? 😅
I don't know 🤷‍♂️.Interview was for MBA only

Hi All. For those with Yale acceptances, how long did it take for you to hear back regarding financial aid? I heard 10 days? Was that the case for you all?

Can anyone who picked GW over Emory or is leaning towards it give me some insight into their process?

I got into Global Epi for both schools. Cost isn't a huge factor as its roughly the same after scholarships. After looking at the course requirements, I think the program at Emory will prepare me better for an Epi job bc they have more classes related to biostats and statistical programs like SAS and R. GW's program only requires 1 class for that, their program seems to lean heavy towards just global health rather than the epi side. At Emory, I feel like I'd be getting a very good mix of both. Other programs like UMich seem way too heavily focused on the math/stats/epi side rather than global health, but Emory's balance is perfect.

Also Emory has part-time work opportunities through REAL where I can apply epi skills to an actual job. DC has an advantage over Emory for policy/general global health opportunities, but I feel like I won't be able get anything part-time where I practice and apply epi skills until I complete my MPH, except for just research assistantships. I do care a lot about the Epi side bc those skills will land me an epi job - I like global epi bc I am super passionate at global health but I also want to learn epi skills so if global health doesn't work out, I'd be qualified for epi jobs, which seem to be in higher demand. Ideally I want to work a job that combines both. I feel like GW is just global health heavy with not enough epi.

I just need to make sure I'm thinking rationally and not under valuing GW's program. I know I could take more epi-related electives if I want, but those classes will add up to cost since it's not a fixed tuition rate like Emory.

Got waitlisted at UC Davis! Which, if we're going off ranking, does NOT help my imposter syndrome since I thought it was a micro-safety.

edit: wait holy **** I accidentally applied and didnt realize it's actually the accelerated version so if I get in, I'll finish it in one year; IMPOSTER SYNDROME AVERTED

it has been over a month since I submitted to UNC and I have not heard anything. should I be concerned?

Sorry to hear that, though it looks like you have some very nifty acceptances! Can I ask if you received an email, and if your portal updated with the decision? Would really love the option of going back to UC Davis D:

Hi there!!! If you refer to my post above, I actually mis-read and did not realize I accidentally applied for Accelerated so I'm STOCKED they even thought I was moderately qualified!! (false alarm for the imposter syndrome)

Also, I received an email to check my portal!

That's awesome 🙂! And thank you for the info!

UW appears to rank considerably higher than Brown on Shanghai Rankings for public health (which measures research power as opposed to peer-rankings from US News). UW is also one of the highest NIH-funded universities and Brown doesn't seem to even be in the top 50. I don't go to UW (yet!) and I'm not going for an MPH, though. You should compare their research rankings in clinical psychology if that's your goal instead of public health.

I know it's kind of late for outside scholarships, but anyone know of any good search engines for our field?

Got accepted to UPenn! If anyone has any insight on the program, pls let me know. I know that while it's an Ivy, it isn't ranked as high as some of the other schools I've been looking into and I'm wondering why that is
Congrats! I think it's because UPenn's MPH is fairly new, if I remember correctly.

OMG, Really uncomfortable thing happened.
As I posted yesterday, I was officially rejected by Columbia.
BUT AFTER THE OFFICIAL DESCISION, I GOT AN INVITIATION FOR THE INTERVIEW FROM THE STUDENT!!!!!!!!! (JFYI, I applied for health policy and management)

I have no idea why this happened.
I just fed up with the admission's bad applicant management and this made me really uncomfortable since this is the SECOND TIME they made a mistake.
FIRST TIME, I GOT A WRONG ACCEPTANCE, and SECOD, I RECEIVE A LETTER THAT LOOKS LIKE MY ADDMISSION IS STILL CONTINUING AFTER THE OFFICIAL DESCISION.

I am sorry that I am an international applicant. If I were a domestic applicant, I would tip off the NEW YORK TIMES lol

edit: I am currently in Japan, that's why the email says it was received on 3rd March.
Got rejected from Columbia. Expected this result since I haven't invited to the interview 🙂
Actually it was my top choice school but now I'm feeling okay since I was accepted other attractive programs 😃

Congrats to those who get acceptance!

Just submitted to switch from Columbia PopFam to HPM (hope it's positive) 😭
was told they wont consider the change until april 19th (which i understand why), just wish they had told me that they won't automatically review when i had first asked bc it implied they would
