MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got awarded $24k from Johns Hopkins! Very honored. I didn't get anything from Harvard and this would make Hopkins $48 versus Harvard $85. They were basically tied at the top of my list so this might push Hopkins over the edge!
Did you get an email about the JHU award, or did you randomly check the portal?

Hey guys! I applied to Emory at the end of January amnd still havent heard back. Anyone else's timelines familiar? This is the last school I'm waiting to hear from so I'm eager to wrap this up lol

Has anyone emailed HSPH financial aid to request to be considered for funding/scholarships if more become available? I saw the previous post about someone who wrote to BU and had a great response.

If anyone has, what was their response and could you mention some things you mentioned?

Thanks 🙂 Also, I am sorry to hear about the rejections from Harvard today 🙁

You could go back to HSPH and request if they would match the funding.

Hello! I applied on 1/29 to Emory, app sent for review 2/5 and was accepted on 3/3 - that was for the Epi department. Goodluck!

BU increased from 25% to 30%! For those asking, I wrote:
  • I'm thanking for the opportunity and the funding awarded.
  • Here is why I think I'm a good fit for the program.
  • Here is why I think I, and my career goals, embody the school's mission.
  • Funding is a huge decision factor.
  • Thanks again.
Also for those asking:

  • Jen Farkas (finaid director) at Yale says they do not increase awards. I did have a conversation with her about other funding opps and looks like there are a lot of on campus jobs that can probably float your living expenses.
  • GW will consider you, I sent what I wrote above. They replied to send other offers. I sent. They said they'd get back to me around the 3/15.
Hi! GW also told me I would hear by today. I sent in my appeal on 2/12, so I am getting frustrated I have not heard anything! When did you contact BU about an increased scholarship? I emailed last night, I was just wondering how long it took for you?

I emailed GWU about a scholarship appeal a few weeks ago and they told me that I would hear back closer to April 15th. I would probably check in with them again to see if they have an update?

Dumb BU question incoming. I was looking at the financial aid website last night and the 2 options listed for MPH is accelerated 16 months or a full-time part-time combination. I didn't know there wasn't a regular full-time 2 year MPH. So do most BU students do the 16 months accelerated program- is this the norm? Is this something different you have to apply for? Basically, I am confused about the other option of the full-time part-time combination, I defiantly don't want to do this especially because it's the same amount of credits, cost, and I would have to pay to live there for that much longer. If anyone could explain this to me I would be very grateful, as I don't want to call the admissions office and seem stupid hahaha!

Was it merit-based/need based? Or they didn't specify

I was not successful in appealing for more than the 25% scholarship I was already offered

Hello! I emailed them late last week and they told me specifically I would hear by today, it might be different for different programs or different people

I was awarded 18k in scholarship from Johns Hopkins this morning and it's making it a hard choice for me! Does anyone have any thoughts on the one year general MPH program at Hopkins and ability to get a more concentrated education out of it? I'm in health policy in the other programs I'm considering and I like having the structure and specificity... but ugh, the cost of a two year program.

this is the email I got 🙂

For those who are still waiting for Columbia's admission decision, I just emailed the Admissions office and received a decision letter within an hour.
I was waitlisted for SMS concentration 🙁 . I remember there was a discussion about the waitlist at Columbia, but for the life of me can't find it in this thread. If anyone has any information about the waitlist, please let me know!

hey guys! Are people who were accepted in around Feb 15th to Columbia MPH still waiting on financial aid? sorry if this question was already asked.
Yeah I'm still waiting! But I think there are people who were accepted earlier who haven't heard yet so I'm not expecting anything for a few weeks tbh

My understanding is people are admitted to the MPH program whether or not it's full-time or part-time. On the admitted students day on Saturday, it sounded like many students switch between full and part-time (PT in order to work more while going to school) and it's very easy to switch back and forth. If you do a full-time course load, it sounds like you graduate in 3 semesters (with the summer in between), so 16 months. I don't know what percentage do 16 months versus 2 years or more. I agree it is a little bit confusing because it's not something I thought they advertised well during the application process.

Hi! Has anyone here successfully appealed JHU for more financial aid?

Or anyone considering JHU vs. Yale? Hopkins is about 16k more than Yale for me, but since it's a one year program, I'm wondering about the fact that I'd (hopefully) be able to return to work sooner/make up that difference.

I was accepted on 1/21 and still have not gotten financial aid back. I emailed the fin aid office and they basically said they were overloaded with applications, but they'll probably all be out by the end of March. Someone was telling me though that they got accepted 2/2 and got their aid package a couple weeks ago, so I don't know what's going on lol

So, based on what they said at accepted students day this past weekend, you just decide to take that track when you sign up for classes. You can switch between part time and full time during your time there depending on your needs, obligations, or comfort. For example, maybe you have an internship one semester so you go part-time. It’s not anything extra you had to apply for.

I have a feeling columbia puts you on the waitlist because they havent had the chance to look through all applications yet. Not because you have a chance of getting in. Thoughts?

Thank you both very much! This is very helpful! I wasn't able to go to the accepted students' day due to work so thank you for filling me in. If either of you were accepted/ going to BU what do you think you will do? Additionally, do either of you know if you were accepted into one major how easy is it to switch to another major?

omfg guys so I emailed JHU admissions asking when i could expect a decision

DIDN'T GET AN OFFICIAL ACCEPTANCE EMAIL OR PORTAL UPDAYE YET BUT THE ADMISSIONS PERSON SAID SHE CHECKED MY FILE AND THEY MADE A DECISION TODAY. I GOT INNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH THATS 8 OUT OF 8

I'll come back with a cheesy, long, sentimental post about how thankful I am for the SDN community, but right now I just need to breathe. I can't believe this. Words can't describe how happy I am. It's finally over. I did it.

So, the concentration we put on our applications is non-binding and had no bearing on our application. We choose our concentrations officially 4 weeks into class. They didn’t explicitly state how easy it was to change once you do that. But, Dean Galea kept saying you’re not married to your concentration in the student coffee chat a few weeks ago. Personally, I will probably do the 2-year option because I’m from the area and plan on setting there for at least a few years. I also have a sucky stress tolerance at times.

Hi everyone! I am 99% sure I will be joining UW for their Community-Oriented Public Health Practise cohort. Bit of a niche and small program. Curious as to if anyone has been accepted or has decided to enroll? Would love to connect ahead of the admitted students week 🙂

Also VERY excited for our April 15th Google Meet. I've already blocked off time on my work calendar lol

PLEASE TURN ON YOUR CAMERAS if you can! It would be so great to finally put a face to a...username! 😛
No one uses their real name here lol

I still haven't heard back from Berkeley regarding merit/need-based scholarship so I'm guessing that's a no lol. Anyone else?

Berkeley is sort of my last hope. I received some scholarship from Harvard & Yale (25% & 60% respectively) but alll things considered, its just not a wise investment for me.
