MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I accepted my admission to Cal! I haven't heard anything from financial aid, but since I live in the Bay Area, it'll be the most affordable option. If anyone's heard from them for financial aid, please let me know! They told me people should be hearing back by early March.

...but still anxiously awaiting BU, HSPH, and JHU. I just wanna know!! 😆

Just got accepted to BU with 25% scholarship! Mental Health and Substance Use MPH program. So the acceptance date for the seat is April 15th, has anyone tried to get an extension? I have a lot of stuff up in the air, just like everyone else so I was just curious. In addition, is I am waiting to hear back from USC, is the deadline to commit also April 15th? If so has anyone tried to extend there as well?

I am so confused, if possible, I would just pay to commit at two schools at this point and then make a decision 🙁

finally heard back from BU and was accepted! i'm happy to say i got into all 4 schools i applied to and that the application cycle is done for me!

i've been deciding between UIC and UMich so please feel free to connect if you're planning on attending either schools!

Committed to USC MPH program today. I want to thank everyone for all the help and support🙂 Ucla was my top choice but it is what it is (got rejected from ucla), and USC was my second choice and im happy that i got into my 2nd choice school.
** still havent heard back from uc irvine. i emailed them few times already and didnt receive any response. USC was very communicative and while I did have some hard time communicating with Ucla, they responded to me at the end. however, uc irvine just went completely silent. i am really disappointed at their lack of communication and i really want to petition to get my application fee back.

to those who got in to the schools, huge congrats!! and to those who are still waiting or are waitlisted, do not lose hope becuz you are all smart and wonderful people and i believe that you will get in🙂

Also, I would like to share my (not so fancy) stats for the future MPH applicants:

Undergraduate: UC San Diego
Major: International Studies - political science
Overall gpa: 3.5
Major gpa: 3.7
Gre: NA
Certs: Biostatistics Certificate (at UCSD Extension), IBM Certified Specialist - SPSS Stats Level 1v2
Experiences: +3 years at healthcare related fields
LOR: 4 (2 from professors; 2 from my current job: 1 from vice president and 1 from a doctor whom im helping publishing an article)

I just want to say that to those who are like me that did not major in public health or any science fields but are interested in MPH but afraid to apply, don't be. Although I studied political science, i dont regret studying it and whatever your major is, you can bring new insights to the program. Just check department websites and see if they have any prereqs and if they do, then consider taking those classes.

Good luck to all of you!

Hello everyone,

Got into my too 3 MPH nutrition programs at Hopkins, Berkeley, and Harvard.

Also got into Yale, Columbia, and UCLA but those aren’t focused in what I’m interested in like nutrition.

Anyone currently debating between these programs? Happy to connect so we can share our thoughts.
My former thesis advisor runs the nutrition program at Berkeley. Please PM me with any questions!! They are amazing!

Hey Everyone:
Happy Friday! Long time lurker here- can't imagine going through this cycle without this forum and you awesome people. Love how compassionate and supportive we are as a community.
I'm trying to choose a program and would really appreciate your advice on this. I'm truly grateful to have been accepted into some great programs and now I'm deciding between JHU ( one year full-time MPH), Yale (MPH Health Care Management ) and UC Berkeley (Health Policy and Management). I'm an international student planning to work in health systems/ health-related tech companies/startups after graduation, what do you think is the best place to go?
I'm so torn as JHU is ranked the top for good reasons, Yale has a good international reputation and the MPH program has a close integration with their school of management. and I've been in the Bay Area for several years for school and work so I'm familiar with the kind of opportunities and network Berkeley can provide. Costs are gonna be similar for the 3 schools so that doesn't really factor in. This is tough! Thank you in advance for your insights!!
First make sure, you will have visa support as an international student to stay in the US with an MPH degree since all the programs you named are NOT STEM-supported program. So, no stay in US after one year of the degree if no other visa support available. Health systems/ health-related tech companies/startups rarely sponsor H1B for international student with an MPH degree but NGO and non-profit org. Hope this helps.

me getting freaked out. I keep hoping i’ll get some fellowship position so I can defer but i’m trying to hustle and apply for zero interest loans so I can try to get the first year covered without taking private loans. Alot of outside scholarships dont consider you until you are a year in.
I’m going to network my butt off my first year and try to get a TA or RA position year 2 so I can get some tuition paid for. I just finished paying off my undergrad loans and going another 70-80k (if I work and put in some of my own savings) in the hole is terrifying.

yeah my parents took the undergrad burden for me loans and all. i need to figure out which schools have tuition remission with those positions because gw does not

I was also just rejected from Harvard MPH-45 (SBS). I thought I could have felt worse but I am very grateful for getting into 6/7 schools I have applied. My heart is leaning towards Yale compared to JHU and Columbia - would love to join the conversation about Yale decisions.
Thank you everyone for all your sharing and company in the past few months! The support and community here is incredible. I believe that no matter where we end up in the future, we would be surrounded by great people who are a force of making this world a better place.

Which programs/depts did you get into for JHU, Yale, and Columbia? I'm also considering those schools, and would love to know why you're leaning towards Yale! JHU MSPH in HBS, Yale SBS, and Columbia SMS for me!

Only by the grace of God! I got into Yale SBS! Thank you all for this supportive community. It has truly helped me so much. I wish you all the best!

Now, I decide between Yale and JHU... does anyone have any advice?
I'm also considering the same Yale and JHU programs as you! I'm interested in doing a PhD afterwards, so wondering if JHU's reputation within public health might be worth going there. Do you know if JHU offers scholarships besides the 75% off in the second year? I just got accepted into JHU this week, so not sure when I'll hear back about other finaid.

Hi everyone! It's me again! Congratulations on all your acceptances! I am a full-time JHU MPH student concentrating in Child and Adolescent Health and pursuing a certificate in Health Disparities and Health Inequalities. I've received quite a bit of PMs regarding writing a letter to appeal to the Office of Financial Aid for a merit scholarship since I was able to do so successfully ($25k). COVID-19 has put many people in rough financial situations, and I thought I could offer my assistance to help you obtain some assistance from your top institution. Feel free to PM me questions about Hopkins or scholarship reevaluations. Take care!

Did they give out any need-based aid/grants?

Really? I did not know that. May have to officially cross it off my list then

Is there anyone who's still waiting for a response from Berkeley? More than likely it's just rejections but I still haven't heard anything yet 🥲

yeah columbia doesn’t either, I mean they
pay you obviously just doesnt go the extra mile for the remission option which seems more common at non private schools.

Anyone here have any feedback on NYU Epi from past students? How are employment prospects of its recent graduates? Any better than public universities? Advantages/Disadvantages? Thanks. Its so expensive even with scholarship....

Anyone heard back from UCLA Community Health Sciences? I don't want to be impatient and email but I'm getting nervous!
I emailed them last week, and they said to be patient and they are still giving out emails until Mid March 🙁

Hey everyone! I’m looking for some input on my options. I’m currently debating between GWU and BU for health policy. I know GWU’s location is hard to beat for policy, but I recently found out that the tuition is substantially higher than I initially thought. With the 8k I was offered, my tuition would probably end up being around 77k. Meanwhile, BU offered me a 30% tuition scholarship, which brings my tuition to just under 60k. There’s other pros and cons for each school for me personally, but I was wondering if the higher tuition at GWU would be worth it for job prospects? I was set on GWU because I didn’t think I could get into BU, but now that I know how expensive it is I’m reconsidering. Is the difference in ranking important? Any info or opinions are appreciated!!
Hi there, I'm a current GW policy student! Being in DC for health policy is really just the place to be, in my opinion, but I admit I am biased. However, the difference between 60 and 77k is a lot of money, and I can understand why you're torn.

As someone who has lived in both Boston and now DC, I like both cities but prefer DC. The difference in ranking doesn't mean as much as the location - e.g. it's easier to get a job in DC if you go to school there, and same with BU. Where do you want to end up?

Also, I'm not sure how BU works, but the vast majority of GW classes start after 4pm, so you can work full or part time which can significantly ease the financial burden. I work full time (was working full time before starting school) and I go to school part time. Plenty of GW students go part time if they work a lot.

Is anyone still waiting on Umich? Also for those who were accepted to HBHE, approx how long did it take for an answer? So anxious!

Rejected my offer at Minnesota. Had in-state tuition scholarship offer. Hope it helps others get admitted or have funding reallocated. It was tough to reject since I haven’t made my final decision on where I am going yet. But I knew it was unlikely Minnesota would be the choice compared to the other schools and I hope it will help others out that really want Minnesota. Good luck on deciding, everyone, and congrats on getting this far!! 🎉

Hello again! I’d be happy to join a celebration zoom or discord as we got through this admissions cycle through a pandemic! We gotta give ourselves credit.

Also I made a GroupMe chat for any Harvard MPH students. My focus is in nutrition. Nice way to meet and maybe discuss living situations, financial cost etc. You're invited to my new group 'Harvard MPH' on GroupMe. Click here to join: GroupMe

CONGRATULATIONS! I am also thinking about a PhD afterwards! I haven't received any information regarding financial aid yet, but I am concerned about the cost of both programs. I am in the process of making a pros and cons list, and it is very useful. I heard New Haven has one of the best pizza places in the U.S. (checkmark for Yale haha)! Keep me updated, if you'd like! Wherever you decide to go, you'll attend a great program!
