MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got into Harvard, Hopkins, Emory, NC, and Yale for MPH in Health Policy. Right now, I am deciding between Harvard (no scholarship) and Yale ($60,000 Horstmann Scholarship). Any suggestions on where should I go?
Congrats on the two Ivies! How much is Harvard? Without knowing much, Yale sounds pretty great considering living around Cambridge can be expensive too. I've seen a lot of people post that they like that Yale has such a small program too. I'm debating two different schools for health policy on your list! Good luck!

Do you think you could update us if/when they respond back to your email? I was wondering the same thing regarding the fin aid email we received today 🙄
UPDATE. Columbia told me all merit free aid has been given out and appeals are not likely to go through. They are off my list officially.

Just got financial aid info from Columbia (accepted 02/02). No scholarships given, I'm apparently only eligible for a loan. Still waiting to hear back from Brown on the financial aid front and then will be making a decision from there. I'm pretty disappointed, I was hoping to get something, but I think I'll just have to pick up another job this summer to save. Not that that'll be enough to cover it at all, but should help.

You should’ve received a scholarship email like a day or so after your acceptance to Brown. I’m surprised you haven’t heard.

Funny, I have a GPA higher than 3.75 AND received pell grant funding.

Regardless of both of those things, I received no aid lmao.

Columbia really went from first to last for me this year considering how they handled this admissions cycle. Sad :/
you can appeal but idk if it’ll work

if anyone is looking to appeal their financial aid package at brown, this is the email i received after checking if it was possible:
" If you want to appeal your aid decision, you can send an appeal with any new information not reflected in your FAFSA data to the Graduate Financial Aid Office at [email protected]. The MPH Program only has small scholarships for higher need students so the scholarship would not increase by more than 5% even if the appeal changes your aid need designation."

I would've preferred a rejection, to be honest. Roughtly 142k in loans for an MPH? Nah fam.

For those accepted to Umich HBHE, how long did it take to get an email after the portal update??🙂

Would Yale consider an appeal for a higher scholarship? I've never done this before so I'm quite nervous about it...I'm already so grateful for the amount I received (Horstmann), but it'd really help if I could bring the total degree cost down more :/

I've heard they generally don't but Jenn is so nice and it wouldn't hurt to ask (but they might not be able to give a clear answer until after deposit deadlines).

Does anyone know how to access the GWeb to see your entire financial aid info? It asks you to login with ur ID and pin but I was never given a pin to begin with.

I JUST GOT INTO NYMC FOR EPI!!! I AM SO HAPPY THIS IS THE FIRST ONE I GOT INTO 🙂

So happy for you!!!

This is what NYMC says about what they look for in an successful applicant -

"We also look for a “passion” for public health, some understanding and appreciation of the field and a desire to become more involved in improving health and health care in your community."

Besides the academic credentials, you definitely have the passion for PH!!!

Z.

Jen will tell you it is final. I have already done this since my scholarship was lower than I hoped.

"Hi crashfan,

Thanks for staying in touch! Some schools do reallocate funding when students decline to attend. At YSPH we know not everyone will be able to attend, so we build that in to our funding. That allows us to put our best foot forward, rather than keeping you waiting to learn your final award! Unfortunately that also means we don’t have additional funding we can offer.

But if I can help with information about external funding, student employment, or loans I’d be happy to schedule a time to chat! I’m typically available weekdays 8:30am-4pm EST.

Best,

Jen"

(nicely done) :claps:

From a cost perspective, UTHealth lookin' really good right now. 🤣
ngl that's why I was seriously considering it at the beginning!!! I truly think it's a hidden gem! Not just from a cost perspective, there's so many research opportunities at the medical center plus TA and RA positions that give you a tuition discount!! all in a low COL city! I also liked that faculty there had interests in border health, a super unique topic that I really wanted to dive deep into. The dual degree options are nice too. I'm lowkey having a very hard time letting that school go bc I was just so attached to it lol

Had to do it to 'em
cries in 80k tuition.

But still Yale is so helpful and caring I am glad I will be attending. All the students I have spoken with mention how great the school and program is.

Just today I got a printed acceptance letter mailed to my house and it included a hand written note from Mary Keefe, the director of admissions. Looks hand written at least. My other schools haven't done half the amount Yale has.

Kinda boggles my mind that Yale's MPH program is more expensive than Columbia's, given its reputation. Either way, I'm happy that you're going!

UTHealth really has some fantastic networking incentives, as well. It's been my "safe school" this entire time, but I might end up going there since it's the best bang for my buck.

They only have ~25 students entering each department or about 250 overall but it feels like so many are joining this fall. I wonder how many will actually come thru.

Most my family/friends are telling me not to go to Yale since the price tag is still double other schools. Honestly hoping the name and program work in my favor after graduation. It was one of the first schools of public health in the country after all.

When I emailed Columbia today they said they are still allocating merit scholarships and will be sending them out until April 15. Not sure why you said it was all given out. Based off the photo you posted it just sounds like they cant offer you anymore right now.

Wow this is interesting. Thank you for pasting Jen's email for me, I guess I won't need to ask then 🙂 This is a little disheartening though. For me, the cost of Yale and JHU are so similar, I'm having a hard time choosing one school...Are most people leaning towards Yale because of its flexibility/ friendliness?

me if you peep my last comment.
Even one of the students I spoke with had $0 in scholarship and they chose Yale.

What have you heard on flexibility? I am familiar with the friendliness aspect.

When I spoke to them on the phone they explained like in the email most likely what I got is final. Also, even if I did appeal she reiterated there is no guarantee I'd know before April 15. I just decided I had enough time waiting since Jan 20th. No money, no honey.

Does anyone know if there’s an accepted students GroupMe or something for GWU? I’m in the BU one and everyone is so friendly and it already seems like a community, but I haven’t seen anything similar for GWU.

I might have missed this during visit week, but does anyone know if you can defer at Berkeley?

Has anyone received any information about an admitted student's day or anything similar for UW? I was accepted into the Epi program and the letter said invitations would be sent in the following weeks but I haven't received anything.
Yes. I've actually been attending them.

Thanks!
I received a mail entitled Rollins School of Public Health Scholarship Notification.
I'm an international student and have done MSc in the most prestigious uni in my country. GPA is 3.5 or something (3.3 from undergrad and 3.8 from graduate school).

I crossed my fingers for you!
Hi. Can I ask how much you got?

Me too. I'm not sure why Harvard has such limited funds with the Chan School received 350M a few years back. Also, how is Yale able to give out so much money... it seems usual compared to previous years, no? This money IS guaranteed right as long as we perform academically well?

Appealed my scholarship at BU and asked for a rise. Still going to try to find a full time job (which I know will negate it the scholarship) but that’s too good of a deal to pass up.

When I spoke to Jen Farkas she said that "awards typically don't change after the semester begins" and I assume she means that if students perform well academically, the money is guaranteed

Congrats! Yale has a very solid policy program and with the $$ I think it's gonna be less stressful financially
