MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

Quick question for anyone accepted to Columbia. Did the financial aid office reach out asking for your social security number? I thought I had already put in it in my SOPHAS application and on my FAFSA, but they said they don't have it on file.

They said to email it to the admissions office, but I'm not sure if it that is the most secure way to send my social security number.
Soooo glad I'm not the only one who got this email today too. I was freaking out because I specifically made sure my SSN was on SOPHAS before I submitted it so was really stressed when I got that email today. I emailed them back, CC'ing Columbia admissions, asking them to confirm if it really was missing my SSN. A few hours later, financial aid replied back saying that they're working with admissions to resolve the issue and they'll reach out to me if they need anything so maybe it's an issue on their end or with SOPHAS.

I did want to ask on here though: I logged on SOPHAS > clicked the 'check status' tab on top > and then downloaded the pdf version of the application sent to Columbia and on there, I actually dont see my SSN even though it's definitely in the 'personal info' tab of the application. Is it like that for anyone else??

Same here with the SOPHAS. The application packet only has the Native Language or something the "Other Information". SSN is not included. I think that is the way it is suppose to work.

Btw, I did not get the email yet asking for the SSN.

I definitely feel relieved that it wasn't just me, too!! To answer your question, I'm seeing the exact same thing as you!! My SSN is in the personal info tab of SOPHAS, but not in the Columbia application PDF download. So weird!!!

Thank you for updating us with the reply they gave you. I didn't think to email them back! I just sent a message to admissions asking them how they would like me to submit my SSN (because sending it over email is definitely a security issue). I didn't get a response from them yet, so I'll probably hear from them on Monday! Anyways, it seems like this issue will be resolved one way or another 🙂

Thank you again!

After receiving the email from Columbia, I called SOPHAS. I spoke to a representative who checked my SOPHAS applications. She confirmed that my SSN was sent to the schools I applied to. As with you, my SSN is not listed on my pdf application but under my personal information. The representative stated that if a school can't view my SSN, it is a technical issue on their end.

SDNers,

I have a general question to ask, and looking for advice and suggestions. I had specifically applied for 1-year MPH program at couple of schools. This was when I lost my job last year and thought I could get the MPH going until things change. I am blessed to have gotten a job for now, and I do not see myself leaving a decent salaried job and taking on a full-time MPH.

I was also banking on the fact that most universities would probably still be "remote". I am pretty sure (wishful thinking) that I can balance both studies and work (maybe ask for flex-time) and keep both, if that makes sense.

I am extremely fortunate to have been accepted to the EMPH program at Emory. It lets me keep my job and study. Columbia is great but I just don't see myself doing the full-time, unless its remote, and they gave me some money.

My question is, should I wait for decisions from others (and some scholarship), and then contact them to change the program to an online/remote one, if possible? The reason being that I just might have a chance with the 1-year program and want to secure something first before opening my mouth.

Or should I do it now?

Anyone else in this situation of trying to keep both job and MPH?

Thanks in advance.

Z.

I would wait but it doesnt hurt to just ask if they even offer to convert the program to part time just so you are aware

I am extremely fortunate to have been accepted to the EMPH program at Emory and I am leaning towards it for now, since I do not have to quit the job. Columbia is great but I just don't see myself doing the full-time, unless its remote, and they gave me some money.

Hi! I'm also currently working full-time and if classes are going to continue to be remote is also a factor for me but for a different reason.
I personally would contact the programs now and ask to change because the online program could be in a different department and you might have to apply again. It could be March by the time you get your decisions with the financial aid (if you get any). I understand wanting to be secure, but I like to remember: "closed mouths don't get fed."

I’ve posted this before but many more people have been accepted by now. If anyone wants to chat with a first year health policy student at GW, message me!! (Any concentration, not just health policy)
Hey thanks! Do you know by any chance when GW starts sending out financial aid?

Does anyone know if there's an admitted students Facebook page or GroupMe for the University of Minnesota?
There's a admitted students Facebook page run by the school! It's on the incoming students page emailed to you in your acceptance email sent by your department. The Facebook page is for The fall 2021 admitted school of public health so it's not by concentrations.

Omg I have no idea how I missed this! Thank you so much 🙂

Dumb question but is it possible for schools to rescind your offer of admission? I don't see any "conditions of admission" as they require for undergrad so I'm curious if that's ever possible. Maybe it's just me overthinking and being paranoid lol. (I'm in my senior year of undergrad and graduating in May)

One of the conditions if you are still in school to finish up your 4-year degree is to have that degree before you start classes in the Fall.

Boston U (35% off), Brown (35ish% off), Cornell (+$10k), Drexel (+I think $17k), Hopkins (no cash other than the "75%" off year 2 thing--which everyone gets i think lol, kinda a scam to make u think they really did ya a favor), Morgan State (no cash yet, expecting some but I wont know until after April 15th ugh), SUNY Albany (+10k ish i think), SUNY Buffalo (no cash yet, but nominated for some diversity funding!), UDel (full ride + 42k stipend fellowship!!!), UNC (no cash yet, expecting none), UMD (no cash yet, expecting none), UMSOM (no cash yet, expecting none), Yale (+60k Hortsmann Scholarship),
Rejected: Nobody yet! 😀
Waitlisted: Nobody
Attending: idk yet--still got more decisions to go! UPDATE: But now that the fellowship at UDel is official, I'm 99% sure that's where I'll end up!

So I have a VERY wide range already--super grateful! 🙂 I'm hoping to get some advice from you all actually! I'm really pumped about the Graduate Fellowship at UDel, and I really feel wanted there! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to go to school for free AND get paid to do it, and its looking like UDel is the only school where that may be possible. I also already have a really amazing faculty research match there and I totally clicked with her personality and her research, more than anywhere else, which I found very comforting! Also I'm a fan of the cost of living in Newark, and its an ideal distance from home where I can kinda get away but still be close to friends and family (I'm from Maryland for anyone wondering)! However, considering I also got offers from "heavyweight" places like Yale and Hopkins--I wonder if I'm not being wise? For context, even with the 60k from Yale I still have to find the remaining 40k from somewhere (loans lol). Even for an ivy league, I don't see myself turning down the option of a FULL RIDE plus a paycheck just for going to school lol! For an MPH, thats so, so rare. I can always do the "big name" school for my doctorate degree where loans aren't even in the question, right? AHHH I'm preliminarily stressed about this lol! I don't wanna disappoint my family if I pick a state school over an ivy 🙁 but I also want to make the best decision for me and my life plan! Anybody have thoughts? What would you do?

Congrats on all your acceptances! Amazing scholarships as well! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think UDel's program is CEPH accredited. You might want to factor that into your decision...

Hi! Thank you so much! 🙂 Yeah I think about that alot, but the director told me they're applying for accreditation this semester! The program is brand new, this semester is literally the first graduating class I believe! I spoke to some students and they both seemed very happy! But yeah, still eye-brow raising for sure!

Congrats on your acceptances!!! May I ask when you applied to UNC and when you were accepted?
HI! Thank you very much! 🙂) I submitted SOPHAS on November 19th, 2020 and the supplemental within a week of that (having trouble finding the exact date, lol)! I heard back on 1/13/2021!

No problem!! Glad to help and to know the pdf thing wasn't just a glitch in my application or something. I know financial aid replied to me already but when admissions gets back to you, im curious to know what they say, if of course you dont mind sharing 🙂

After receiving the email from Columbia, I called SOPHAS. I spoke to a representative who checked my SOPHAS applications. She confirmed that my SSN was sent to the schools I applied to. As with you, my SSN is not listed on my pdf application but under my personal information. The representative stated that if a school can't view my SSN, it is a technical issue on their end.
wow this is super helpful and relieving to know, thank you so much for sharing!

Hi! I have an interview coming up next week with Hopkins for the same program. I wasn't expecting an interview! Would you be willing to provide any advice/guidance on the questions/general vibe of the interview? Thank you and congrats on all of your acceptances!

Has anyone not heard anything from UMICH? I got the notification after my app was verified to make an account, but nothing else. I just know that the application is complete.
I heard back from both HBHE and HMP! I heard from HBHE in early December and HMP about 2 weeks ago!

Is it to early to reach out to schools if I applied in January?
That's what I've been thinking as well 😅. I applied to Columbia on 12-30 but it wasn't sent for review until 1-13 because I was waiting on one more letter of rec. I was wondering when people who applied later would find out. Anyone have any idea?

My SSN wasn't available on SOPHAS either so when I emailed Columbia's admissions they ended up calling me from an unlisted number to enter my SSN in their system.

me tooooo I'm so tired of waiting 😵 I'm guessing early-mid February? It took 5 weeks for most people who applied 12/1 to receive their decisions in late January (assuming that the admission committee took a 2-week break during the winter holidays) so I'm guessing it'll take around 5 weeks for us 1/15 group as well?

I applied on 12/1 and am still waiting for a decision. I think different departments are releasing them at different times but I'm getting a little anxious seeing all these people that are hearing back already😬 Hopefully we all hear back soon!

Of course! I don't mind sharing. I will update when I get a response! 🙂

Thanks for letting me know! I requested that they call me instead of sending my SSN over email, so hopefully I also get a call on Monday!

Did you interview for HMP? If so, when? I applied to HMP too and I'm trying to get an idea of turnaround time between interviews and decisions... 🙂

You are right. For example, they haven't released the HPM decisions yet, so I wouldn't stress too much if this is your concentration. They did start to release the epi and SMS decisions a while back tho...it seems like every department goes at their own pace :/

I am assuming I rejected. Same with Yale. if people after my submission date were accepted then it was for a reason I did not hear anything.
I’ve heard that schools with rolling admissions may hold back some applications to make sure they don’t admit too many at the beginning of the cycle. Once they have accepted a certain number of students from throughout the cycle, they will go back and evaluate the applications they held onto. So there may be another batch of acceptances later on!

I received an interview to Dartmouth today. I'm applying to the Executive MPH program. I don't remember reading that this was a requirement. Has anyone had an interview. Any expectations?
I received an interview invitation as well (but for the regular MPH on-campus program). What was it like?
