MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

Hey guys I am down to 3 schools to choose far. I still have 9 schools to hear from but my choices are:

Cornell (infectious disease), University of Illinois - Urbana Champaigne, and Boston University

All are for epidemiology but the first 2 schools are small cohorts (40ish students) while BU is larger.

I was most excited for Cornell however I want to know what y'all think.

Question for Columbia applicants: right before the acceptance error happened, the Director of the MHA & Exec Programs reached out to me to schedule an interview, it was like 9pm at night her time and she was asking if we could speak the next day. I immediately responded and said yes and my schedule was flexible but I never heard back from her....2 days later I emailed again with additional availability for the remainder of the week...still no response. That was over a week ago.

Is my email going to her spam?? I tried calling but no one picks up the general admissions line. What do I do?

Hi! So I go to UIUC for undergrad rn and had the choice to do a BS-MPH there. The epi program is very new, this cohort is the first one. The only reason why I chose not to get my MPH there is because I’m interested in maternal-child health and the department has a **** ton of aging research in general If you’re willing to be a part of a fairly new program, go for it! The faculty is extremely accessible and kind, the college town vibe is also really cool. It’s definitely a lower cost of living than Boston and you can find an apartment within walking distance to where your classes would be. I think it really comes down to your interests and whether you’re willing to be a part of a less established program.

Has anybody heard back from Rutgers or Drexel? If so, when did you apply & hear back? šŸ™‚

My application for Drexel was complete on 1/5 and I heard back on 1/12. They may have started reviewing my app before my final rec letter got there though.

UIUC is definitely a top choice because of the college town vibe. I would be able to bring my dog and car lol. It is accredited but my fear with isolated towns like UIUC and Cornell is that intership/future employment may be hindered whereas boston is a major city but at the same time Boston has like 5 public health programs with competing graduates.

C-U has an amazing public health district and they take a lot of uiuc interns! there’s also other organizations uiuc has great relationships. you could also do an internship in chicago if you felt like moving up there for some time. I wouldn’t worry too much. The only drawback is that a lot of the time area orgs hire UIUC grads. But the name carries a lot of weight so if Chicago was somewhere you wanted to end up after graduation, you’re not stuck in Champaign.

To Drexel? Did they send you a message that your application was in review? And did they provide financial aid info?

Yes to Drexel! And yeah on 1/5 they did! in my letter they gave scholarship info, but financial aid didn’t come in until 1/29. the scholarship was meh compared to the cost of tuition sadly. šŸ™

I’m going to BU so it made me feel less guilty about committing to my top choice lol.

Having gone this far into the application cycle, at this point, many of us only have 1 or 2 programs left to receive an admission decision from. In the meantime, do you folks have any advice for future applicants so they can be successful applicants to mph programs?

It is my hope that future mph applicants will be as successful, if not more so, than I/we šŸ¤—

If you can, don’t be afraid to have an atypical public health interest! I also talked about how as a women with an intersectional identity, I felt public health rarely considered multiple identities at once. I think this helped me stand out honestly. I also don’t know of anyone in public health with a visible disability so I thought I brought something unique to the table!

Ok, so I just got an email from JHU saying I got into the MSPH in Human Nutrition program but was waitlisted for the RD program component. The email said congratulations but it honestly felt like a slap in the face. I will probably go to Umich anyways, but JHU is always the dream. šŸ˜…šŸ˜…

Completely agree with this! I have a major interest in NTDs and the public health challenges small island developing states face. So far, the "niche"-ness seems to have worked in my favor ā˜ŗļø

If anyone knows about the timeline on the UMD MPH program, especially Epi department (or even is just also waiting on a response for them) let me know! I can't find anything from years past about their release dates or typical scholarship amounts, or anything really.

Does anyone know the size of the Columbia popfam cohort every year? Who has heard from Columbia popfam?

I can't respond to a general timeline, but this is my timeline and I applied to the Health Equity program. I submitted my app on 11/17, went to review on 12/7, and received an email on 12/26 stating that the admissions committee made a recommendation and the graduate school is reviewing the recommendation and I should receive a decision within the next 1-2 weeks (tomorrow will be 2 weeks).

Is there an admissions point of contact for the program? Reach out them! They should be more accessible if anything since this is kind of their responsibility.

Good luck!! Epi must be a little different because my app was received on 11/13 and went to review on 11/16, and has remained in review since then. They said on average to expect 4-6 weeks after the priority deadline, but I'm impatient, ha.

Would like to know as well. Did you try emailing the department. I spoke to someone in admission and they said MPH students rarely getting any scholarships.

I have not yet. And that is very disappointing to hear but also a little expected :/

I applied generalist too, but haven't heard anything! My app was received 1/20...I hope I don't have to interview lol...

Congrats!!
I didn't, but I looked at some older posts and it seems like that's how it would've come :')
hoping i'm wrong!
I didn’t get anything in my acceptance letter either, but I also heard that you would get awards in the letter!
