Does anyone here know when we should start hearing back from UCLA HPM? Or JHU HPM? When do they typically release their decisions?
When did you apply? I’ve heard back from both (although I applied for MHA at Hopkins).

Congratulations!! Do you mind sharing your stats?
Sure thing--admittedly I've been a long-time lurker here.

I applied to a mix of MHA and MPH programs in HPM. DM me if you want more details on that!

I deferred in June/July IIRC! Always worth reaching out to the school and asking if they have a deadline for doing so-- mine didn't at the time so I took a lot of time to really consider the decision and see how things were looking with my health/work/etc.
Thanks!

I applied 12/24 and verified as complete on 1/8 for UCLA. JHU was only submitted at verified a week ago so I’m expecting a longer wait for them. But does UCLA usually take this long?

When were your Yale applications marked complete/routed for review? I’m not too hopeful that I’ll hear back today, mine was just sent for review on 1/21.
Submitted: 11/30 Marked Complete: 12/2 Sent for Review: 12/19 Accepted: 01/20

If I get into Columbia idk how I will decide between the Columbia MPH and Johns Hopkins MSPH (both in policy concentration)
I'm planning on either doing consulting or govt in the the long run. What would you chose if money was not a factor?

I like that JHU program is a year of classes and then you jump straight into (hopefully) paid work. I also know JHU is top ranked and love that its close to DC. On the other hand I dont know if the MSPH is right for what I want to do long run.
Columbia is also well respected, and it would be a classic MPH, but it's two years instead of one.

I'm wondering this too for Columbia! It says we are allowed to defer up to one year but no guarantee of scholarships.
I did defer for Columbia. You cannot carry over your scholarship if you receive one, but you will be reconsidered for the year when you enrol. They also ask you to pay for the deposit. Otherwise the process was very straight forward.

honestly if it was between those two i think i'd choose between location and the time of jobs available in the area

Im so conflicted hahah I love NYC and all it has to offer but its so $pricey$ (and this is stupid but I also really dont want to have to use a laundromat haha). Baltimore I dont love as much but I have a ton of family there and its close to DC which I hope to be able to live one day. Both are an upgrade from where I am now hahah

yeah it's super difficult i mean consulting and govt seems more dc for me - I'm still trying to understand the job market for me in nyc other than the UN and NGOs - and nyc is like a dream but also a dread bc of expenses

The good news is columbia is never going to release real decisions so you wont end up having to make a choice between the two 👍🏽

Have any schools announced if classes will be in-person in the Fall? If so which schools? Thanks in advance!

I’ve got my interview for Columbia this week, and I’m the same as you— if I get in I don’t know what I’ll do. I kid you not, I’ve had an obsession with Columbia and New York since high school. But JHU is close to home, cheaper, and it’s ranked #1. Also JHU is really only one year, with the second year being a paid job. During the interview the advisor said most people keep the job they take during that second year— it can be done anywhere, domestic or international. Ahh idk.

Does MSPH vs MPH really make that much of a difference? I hadn’t considered that. What is it that you want to do long term, if you don’t mind me asking!

Did you already have your interview? What was it like?

Sorry for bombarding you with questions! It’s just that we’re basically the same applicant lol

This is my exact situation as well! Already had my Columbia interview but no decision yet. Hopkins was my first choice, but not sure what I'll do if Columbia accepts me.

Hi! It sounds like we have really similar situations! I grew up in northern Jersey and know NYC well, but def prefer the size of DC or Baltimore. I also am so tempted to do JHU because its one year and im anxious to tart making my own money and be independent.

From what I have gathered an MSPH is more for people with a focus on research, which I dont think is what I want to do. At JHU I could not apply for the normal MPH though because I am straight out of college with no experience. Still its JHU so with that name I am not sure if degree classifications make much of a difference.

Long term I believe I want to do consulting for a few years as it seems like the most guaranteed way to make good money straight out of university with no previous full time experience. Once I have enough saved I would love to move to DC and possibly be a health policy advisor.

My interview is tomorrow! Good luck on yours. Feel free to PM me if you want to talk.

How was your interview? What kinds of questions did they ask?

I saw you applied for MHA for Hopkins, but MPH HPM for Columbia, is there any reason why not MHA for Columbia (just curious lol)?

wait the msph has you take a job a second year - or a practimum?

They call it field experience, but it can be paid or volunteer.. Up to you to find the position. Interviewer said some are offered full time jobs when it is finished... either way I love the idea of it being paid.

Oh it’s the practicum, but from what the advisor said most people just take on a job that they continue after the end of the program (or a paid internship that turns into a job after completion).

Side note, if anyone is really into DC/capitol hill he said most people actually don’t intern down there because those internships are unpaid. He mentioned two companies that people usually go to, but I forget what they were called. He said most get involved in Medicare/Medicaid policy

ah - let me know if you remember the companies lol and yeah dc is amix of paid and unpaid - but alot of paid ones end up being part time

Sorry I'm not sure if this has been asked already but has anyone heard from brown? and does anyone know the nyu turnaround time?

Hi! Yes, they sent me an email saying a decision had been made and asked that I log onto the portal. The official decision letter from the graduate division was there. This morning I received a congratulatory email from the HPM department. I submitted my SOPHAS app Dec.1st.
Thank you for responding! This is super helpful - hopefully I can hear back soon from them. Congratulations on getting in! 🙂

Hahaha this is me for Emory vs. Columbia ... I just am such a bad driver I want public transit!!

Speaking of which, what're y'all's terrible/laughable reason for choosing a school? I'll go first.

Emory vs. Columbia vs. BU

I think you should start hearing back soon. I submitted and verified my app on 11/22 and received a decision from them on 1/20. I applied for the same HPM program too. I heard that for UCs decisions can go as long as late March, but hopefully that's not the case
