MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, scholarships are definitely a separate notice from financial aid. I got accepted into UMich for HBHE on 12/10. Received my scholarship package in an email titled "Scholarship Package for the University of Michigan School of Public Health" on 1/20. I also received that financial aid notice today packed with loans. Hopefully you hear back about scholarships soon!
Thanks so much!!

What concentration did you get accepted to at UMich?

What concentration at UNC?

You have some awesome schools to choose from!

I think that this is separate from scholarships! But it is insanely expensive... It made me sick tonight looking at everything I’d had to pay even after loans. If i don’t get any scholarships from mich i won’t know what to do
I'm with you there. Fingers crossed on the merit scholarship situation for us all!

Does Berkeley offer an easy path for instate tuition in your second year like UNC offers? I heard that as long as you have NC driver's license, rental agreement and register to vote in NC, you are pretty much guaranteed instate tuition second year.
I'm actually not totally sure! I hadn't looked into it because I am already a CA resident. However, I have heard Michigan is much harder than NC in that way, to prove residency.

Can someone commiserate with me over how expensive Michigan is? Even in-state. For reference, I'm a CA resident and Berkeley's MPH tuition + fees are $14K/year in-state. Michigan's are double that.

Michigan is the first school to prepare my financial aid package and I can't get over the COA, and how much $$ I'd have to pay even after the federal loan max 🥺

For Berkeley, isn't in-state tuition currently $14K per semester?

This is a very specific question, but does anyone have any idea as to the competitiveness and size difference of the JHU Epidemiology ScM vs. their MHS?

I actually had a very similar experience but was then admitted 2/3 weeks later. I wouldn’t take it as a measure of your strength as an applicant at all. Good luck with the final decision ❤️
I had a similar experience with my Columbia interview (my number one) no camera, interviewer was robotically reading generic questions off of a script, no follow ups from their end on my response. My thought is that a current student can’t have THAT much influence on an admittance decision. Could be hopeful thinking though

Hello everyone and congratulations on all your acceptances/financial aid decisions, it's heartwarming reading it all on here!
So far I've been admitted to GW and Icahn, still waiting for Columbia and Yale (rejected from JHU and UPenn for completion😆) but I can't seem to find any information on the thread about the financial aid application process, so I thought I'd ask y'all. I was under the impression that submitting my application would automatically qualify me for financial aid, but it seems that everyone has been submitting a CSS profile. I'm an international student and was wondering if you could help guiding me on the FA process for the 4 universities I mentioned above because I'm frankly lost.

I'm sorry for being absolutely clueless and thank you!!

Did everyone who received Emory scholarships have a week to decide whether or not they’d use it?

For people interested in Emory or from Atlanta, do you think a car is needed during grad school? Are any of you bringing your cars?

These posts are making me kind of nervous because Emory is a strong top 2 for me and I don't drive 😭😬
I live in Atlanta without a car and although having a car would definitely make life a lot easier, I've been getting by alright lol my first year here I lived alone but right on a bus line so I could get downtown easily (I go to GSU). Getting to the grocery store was tougher but manageable. Now I have a roommate who has a car so we'll go to the grocery store or run errands together--although we use Amazon Fresh a lot to limit going out during COVID.

The public transit here is definitely not ideal but it is nice if you live near a bus/train line! COVID has shut down a lot of bus lines and we aren't quite sure when they'll start running again, which really sucks now, but they'll be up again one day. I plan on using public transit and mooching rides off my partner (he already offered :angelic:) to get to Emory if that's where I decide to go because there is nooo way I can afford a car right now haha

And not having a car does limit your explorations of the metro area, but hopefully we'll all make friends with vehicles to help with that 🙂 🙂 🙂

Accepted to UMD Health Policy & Analysis! The letter didn't start with "congratulations" so I got nervous but it was indeed an acceptance 😁
When did you apply ?I applied to the same program and I’m still waiting on a decision

This thread is a prospective student discussion. If you see FAFSA (federal student loans) discussed in this thread, it's only for US students. You'll want to refer to each school's website for information about financial aid specific to international students. Every site should have a Tuition/Financial Aid section.

Here's GWU's: Financing Your Degree | GW Online Public Health
Use the "Request Info" section or contact someone directly through the email address 🙂

If you don't mind me asking but why? What's wrong with Drexel?

In my humble opinion, these types of specific questions are better when responded to, privately. Responding to it on this larger, general forum where it will be "stored" for years is not a good option, neither for the anonymous responder nor for the university. Forgive me if I have said something wrong.

It's fine. I understand! Thank you for your opinion.

I think the opposite. transparency allows potential customers (students) to be more aware of what they are committing towards for 2 years and up to 10 years of debt.

Do you need to fill out the FAFSA in order to receive scholarship? I haven’t filled out the FAFSA yet due to not knowing for sure yet what I’m doing this coming year. I’m seeing all these people receive scholarships from Emory but I haven’t seen anything?

For need-based scholarships, yes.

Also need it to received REAL (since it's first come first serve) but I think the deadline passed but you can check with admissions. But if you want federal loans, you still need it completed.

I’m confused as to is I should go to UCLA or BU for epidemiology? I got a scholarship to BU and want to get a job. LA is my favorite city in the world, but UCLA isn’t trying to give me funding. What do y’all think?

If funding is one of things holding you back, I would recommend maybe trying to appeal your aid. Hopefully UCLA would be a little more accommodating if they see that BU has given you funding!

Do we know whether Columbia has finished distributing its academic merit scholarships, or whether it comes through it as a slow drip? I know there were a couple on here who received their awards on Thursday and Friday...
I spoke to someone in Financial Aid and they said we should be informed by February 19th

did anyone that got into their first choice concentration at UNC have two UNC applications listed under the "Check Status" tab of SOPHAS? im speculating mine got rerouted to my 2nd choice but i would like to know for sure

Yes, the general consensus is that if ones UNC second choice is manually added to Sophas this means the application was rejected from first choice concentration and was shuffled to second choice.

Glad to hear that -- still crossing my fingers for some kind of academic scholarship (3.9 GPA from Ivy, 170/167/6.0 on GRE). Sounds like there's good reason to still hope even if we haven't heard yet, then...
Your stats are incredible! I am sure you’ll get it! Were you accepted on 1/20?

Great point @crashfan Very well said, and I couldn't agree more. My suggestion to respond individually, and not post it on the larger forum, was because the response could be a personal opinion of @Spartacous1 that is not shared by others and people reading the post could take it in a wrong manner without any context, or worse, the one who posts could be subject to some stupid defamation or libel crap.

While this is my personal opinion, I have been wrong more times in life than I have been right 😱

GOT ACCEPTED TO JHU for MHS IN EPI (Can you tell it's my top choice :"D)))!! 😊

Also, I got the MTS scholarship (75% reduction in 2nd yr of program), and I applied after the priority deadline!! (I though March was the priority deadline :"D so it was me being a dum-dum and I was afraid I wouldn't qualify, but apparently I was worrying for no reason!!) AHHHHH
Congratulations! Are you considering to transfer to ScM degree in the future? I think that's the program which can offer the MTS scholarship.

I actually am not sure, I didn't really look into the ScM program :/ all I'm aware of is that the MTS scholarship is also available for the MHS degree? Though, I could be completely wrong

Has anyone heard from Vanderbilt Epi since applying? I applied in Early December and I haven’t heard anything. No application receipt notification, no informational emails, nothing. I have even sent 3 emails asking if the application was received with no response.

Not terribly worried as i’ve already received acceptance to Yale, BU, and Pitt. But my goodness...if I got accepted, I wouldn’t even think about their offer based on how terrible they have been with communication.

Congratulations on your MHS acceptance!! The MTS scholarship does apply to MHS programs as well, I recently spoke with a current student in the Social and Behavioral Factors MHS program who confirmed the same 🙂

Did you complete the supplemental app? If you applied to MPH programs, they should have emailed you (subject of the email is: Your UNC-Chapel Hill Supplemental Application Login) after your SOPHAS was verified. That's the same portal where they tell you to check for your application status update (they email you). Maybe you'll be able to see if you were routed to your second choice program in there!

Thanks! I know my stats are decent on paper but I've heard scholarship funding is down this year, so I'm still somewhat concerned I won't make the cut for a scholarship at a great school like Columbia. I wasn't accepted until maybe around 1/27 or so, a week after the first admissions started rolling out.
