MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Still waiting for mine. Hope it comes soon. May I ask what they offered? I've been seeing 30-35% off tuition?
“cover 15% of the tuition for your first year. If you take the standard full-time course load in the 2021/22 academic year, the scholarship will be $6,961.00. If you maintain satisfactory progress toward your degree, the scholarship will be renewable in your second year. ”

GOT INTO BROWN!! absolute dream school. there was no mention in the letter of financial support though so I'm unsure if I'm going to attend....$90,000 in loans is just too much !
maybe this newer batch doesn't include the updates for fin aid yet?? Let's keep our fingers crossed!!

So that's 6.5courses/year*$7139/course *2years=92807 US$ - $6,961*2 = 78885

Anyone think it is still worth it to apply to BU? I'm interested in epi and I've gotten 2 acceptances so far (GW and University of MD Baltimore), but all of a sudden I'm feeling really indecisive about my future lol

It's worth a shot! I know they said all of their admits get SOMETHING from FA.

I have the same reservations as you when it comes to loans. Currently deciding between JHU (aka 100k in loans) vs state school (aka 15-20k). I don't know if the JHU name and program strength is enough to justify the loans I'd have to take for the salary I'd come out with. And it wouldn't be like medicine, nursing or pharmacy where you can pretty much find a job right away
I'm have the same thoughts as well. However, both of the schools I'm considering are in-state. One's private and the other is public. And although, public health is becoming a more recognized field, I'm still very worried about the prospective job outcomes after graduation.

To people who applied 12/1 to Columbia and haven't heard back yet... am i remembering correctly that someone posted saying mailman would let all priority applicants know by by march 1? meaning if we don't hear today it'll definitely be next week? I could be making this up but really thought i saw that somewhere on this forum

Yup, that's what they've said in their email responses. So just one more week of living with this anxiety 😭

Good luck to all 🙂
There's that saying : "love the school that loves you" and I really believe in it. I am European and originally applied to London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and was really disappointed when LSHTM rejected me, but since then I have realized that LSTM is really the school for me, it fits my goals more, I love the focus on humanitarian action, I really believe I have landed in the right place 🙂

For anyone on the lookout for Drexel scholarships and fellowships, the admissions director said they are in the final stages of selection and will start sending them out in waves (throughout the spring) by the end of this month.

Is anyone planning on working full time whilst enrolling in a full course of study? What are y'all thoughts on working a full-time job whilst taking a full course load each semester? Is it possible to do such? Meaning will the school's class schedules permit someone to be working fulltime and taking at least 9 credits a semester?
(I think to be full-time at school you need to be enrolled in 9 credits or more a semester, but I stand to be corrected).

Is it worth it to reach out to programs and asking them to match scholarships from other programs? I committed to Yale back in December with a great scholarship package but got an offer today from Brown with much less $ than I had hoped for... Not sure if it's worth it to see if Brown would offer a bit more or if I should just be grateful for what I have.

Following— I’m considering this with BU if Brown gives me a better offer.

I plan on working full-time.

Feeling really discouraged but maybe I’m overthinking it. Applied to UCLA Epi on 11/13 and then SDSU, NYU and USC all on 1/31 (kind of late lol) but still haven’t heard back from any. 🙁 hoping for some good news (or even any type of news at this point) before March...

Congratulations to all the acceptances received this week! You are all awesome 👏 !!

I plan to start with part time and find if I can manage more I will go up to full time.

I'm planning to work full-time but I'll leave my job if it's too much.
It's not uncommon to be a fulltime worker and student; you'll just be busier and need to stay on top of time management. Class schedules vary through out the day so your job would have to be flexible. Some programs have special degrees for working professionals that have evening and online classes, to make it easier.

it's possible but it'll be really tough! you have to be committed to doing literally nothing except work and school. i know a few people who did it.

i will say that i've heard from yale and emory that they limit the amount of hours you can work/week (only 20/week at yale, which is about 50% FTE) -- although i'm not yet clear if that's only on-campus/school-sponsored or not. i don't know if they can really tell you that you can't work to survive but some schools seem to be less flexible (e.g., classes only offered during the day) so your school and work situation will likely need to be flexible. i think the flexibility would also make it easier on your mental health.

i think you should also consider what you're sacrificing at your program if you're working full-time. you may not be able to participate in as many extracurricular opportunities or internships if you're already committed to another job. i'm planning on working around 50-60% FTE so that i can fully devote myself to the program (that's what i'm paying for!).

I plan on working part-time the first year while I knock out some "tougher" courses that would require more study time, then maybe work full time the second year or last semester while I have less extensive requirements left.

Also I didn't know Emory had a limit on hours you can work :/ is it also 20 hours like yale?

I agree with this completely. I worked full time while also being a full time student my first two years of undergrad and I really regret it. Yes, it is definitely possible and was also necessary for me at the time, but I feel like I missed out on a lot of things during those years (one of which would have been a stellar GPA had the circumstances been different).

I've been told by countless people that grad school is really going to be worth it for the experiences and the connections you make, so I'm going to make these my top priorities even if it means having less income than I'd like.

Anyone else’s name disappear from their Columbia portal...? I’m hoping that means my decision is finally coming LOL

I remember you said that you are an international student (please correct me if I remember incorrectly).

Being an international student as you are, it must be tough since you dont have the kind of financial support that us USA citizens have if you come to America to do your grad studies. In your case, you must do what you have to do to afford the program.

But for us American citizens, I think grad school will only be as good as the effort you put into it. Grad school is when you can involve/do so many things that will separate you from the pack. There is a reason why we choose on-campus programs. Take advantage of all the opportunities that a solid mph program offers us. Working full time while we are in school full time + all the good activities we should participate in will not be possible.

That is my 2 cents.

JUST HEARD BACK FROM COLUMBIA!!! ACCEPTED INTO HPM WITH A CERTIFICATE IN HEALTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS!!! my application was submitted 1/15, and the interview was 2/15 so was not expecting to hear back in four days asdfghjkl

also does anyone know how soon we should expect aid/scholarship packages from columbia? does it come with the acceptance or do we have to wait a few weeks to hear back on funding?

Do you guys think its worth reaching out to Columbia admissions via email? I applied 11/28 and haven't heard anything from them since 12/1 saying my application was complete. I applied for HPM and haven't gotten any interview request. I do find it odd that it's been radio silence given I applied before the priority deadline and have very good stats/ application overall.

Congrats!! Aid/scholarship packages are said to come 3-4 weeks after acceptance, but a lot of people accepted ~3/4 weeks ago haven't heard anything about aid/scholarships yet. They seem to be behind this cycle.

Ah I’m scared, for Columbia I was verified 01/06 and interviewed 02/12, but while I got the interview invite I never got the email telling me I was invited to interview. Should I contact the department? I’m scared I was interviewed by mistake 🙁
