MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
thanks! I think in terms of investing i meant like safer investing options like a roth or ETFs or something just not to sure if they are worth it if i go to school in just a few months
I think in general options like ETFs are "safer" but not safe proof. If you're investing a good amount, it's worth talking to an advisor about! I think most people do their own research on them, but with the current market and school approaching, I'd talk to a professional. As for retirement accounts (roth) they can make you much more than other accounts even with taxes and penalties (though I think removing earnings for education is an exception). Now that I think about it...I might need to look into doing this myself...

If there is an admitted students group for GW, would anyone mind checking if someone introduced themselves as Public Health Communication and Marketing concentration? Or maybe someone would be willing to ask the group? It's been past the 6 week mark. And I've used the search feature in this group and haven't seen anyone else admitted or rejected or waitlisted to that department.

anyone here good at investing? does it make sense to put my savings in an account somewhere if i’m just going to take it out in august? is it better to just put it in a higher interest savings?
I would keep all your money liquid for the next 2 years as to pay for expenses and tuition. However the best investing is IRA/401k with next being stocks but these two options require commitment and so you cannot/shouldn't expect to use that money for decades.

My Emory application was routed for review on Jan. 8th and it's been radio silence since. Do you guys think I should email admissions or just stay patient a little longer?

Hi there! So sorry to hear about the wait list, but hope is not lost! I am also waiting for the accelerated program at Columbia and for Harvard. I haven't heard back from either, but did get accepted to JHSP (MSPH) so wouldn't be so sure! Can I by any chance ask when you applied to Columbia and when you heard back 🙂? Thanks so much!
Hey! Just popping in if its helpful - I applied to Columbia by the 1 Dec 2020 deadline and heard back on 20th Jan

@lan15

In my humble opinion, for Health Management, hands-down HSPH. It is the most suitable one since you can take classes at HBS, under world-class faculty (although you might get second dibs on registering for classes as a non-MBA candidate, and I am so sure of that) and build one of the best connections and network. You can also cross-register at MIT and take some amazing classes. Additionally, if a start-up is something you are looking at, nothing to beat HSPH with the Harvard Innovation Lab. I also believe that with "fixed semester fees" you can take as many classes as you want and load up, if you are into the nerdy thingamajig.

If you want "all things public health" then JHU is the best. The choice of classes you can take is phenomenal and you will never run out of subjects to learn, and the label global now. But the business school is not up there with the top ones.

I am not sure about Columbia, but I would think that if you want just the ivy thingy (which you get from HSPH, anyway) and live in NYC, then it matters but otherwise, not much compared the other two.
Thanks for such thoughtful insight! The “all things public health” is definitely an interesting caveat. Food for thought for sure!

I was talking to a girl before I committed to BU who was accepted to ph marketing and communications! my guess is that people who submitted earlier heard back quicker, then closer to the priority deadline they got backlogged.

I'm in the same boat. I just reached out to admissions yesterday to get an update. If I hear back, I'll post the email!

I spoke with Columbia this morning (I've been really disappointed in their admissions process and communications thus far) and she said decision on Friday or Monday of this week for me....so maybe that's indicative of what everyone else can expect?
Oh thanks! Same, Columbia is my top choice but I’m really disappointed with their admissions process and the whole fake acceptance fiasco.

Did they say anything about financial aid timeline by chance?

@anyone who went to Yales meeting with the Dean yesterday. Did they say that there is a MCH concentration that is starting in the Fall. I just want to confirm that I actually heard that and it wasn't wishful thinking lol.

Hi everyone! I am speaking with a student in the school I am most interested tomorrow. Could someone give me advice on the questions I should ask? I have a general idea, but would love some input from you all.

Out of curiosity, how did you get them to speak with you on the phone? I have tried and they seem to have a no phone policy lol

I've been asking more general questions like why this program, what do you wish you had known before enrolling, what do you do outside of class, and what research opportunities are available. I also have asked more program-specific questions about the curriculum itself and internships and practicums after doing more research. I feel like I've been coming up with more questions after talking to someone for a few minutes.

I have asked what they would change about the program if they could and where they would have gone if they didn’t go there and why they chose the way they did. Even though they may be more uncomfy questions than normal, it can really give a lot of insight to help make your decision and get the real feel of a program.

Same here. Curious what concentrations y'all applied for?

For those accepted to Yale, is the decision in an email? Or is it an email to check the portal? And do you receive a scholarship notification with your admission decision?

Don't go more into debt... go for the affordable option. If anything, apply to the PhD at Emory after an affordable MPH because PhDs are generally funded.

But I do not recommend going more into debt if you already have that much.
Have you heard of students going for an MPH somewhere not highly ranked but still getting into good PhD programs? I have faith in myself to get published and work hard wherever I go, but yeah.

Thank you! I applied via sophas on 30th November and heard back from Columbia 02 Feb!

Has anyone received a scholarship or assistantship from UTHealth?

I applied on 12/1 and they received my application the next day. I got my decision fairly quickly, on 12/8 so about a week. And then on 12/18, I got an email saying I was awarded the Outstanding New Student Master Scholarship ($1000 and in state tuition for the first year). The official letter came about a week later. But I also applied to the Austin campus, not the Houston Campus so I’m not sure if that makes a difference in how soon you get a decision.

Okay, I'm GLEPI too! So maybe it's that department. I know @mph_applicant43796 waited for like 10 (?) weeks to hear back for that conc too. At this point I'm just worried I'll be denied and not really have time to be considered when rerouted.
Correct. I applied 11/23 and didn't hear back until 2/15. I'm assuming Epi programs take a bit longer since they might receive more applications (though i'm not entirely sure, just my theory). Patience, you got this!

thank you so much for this reply!! i’m trying to decide if i should go to UW because the west coast is where i’d like to settle down or go to Emory because of how drawn i am to the program but i don’t want to pay all that tuition if i’m not planning on staying there after graduation. i read the original post and started to freak out because i was leaning towards Emory so it’s nice to know that i can still take advantage of all the school has to offer without feeling like it’s only worth it if i stayed in Atlanta
I'm in the same boat, torn between UW and emory :C

anyone hear from Columbia this week? 🙁
I heard back yesterday that a student would reach out about an interview, and the student reached out today. Interviewing tomorrow. (This is for HPM - seems like (informal) interviews are required). I had emailed admissions on Monday about the status of my application because it had been radio silence since 12/1... not sure if it is a coincidence that I heard back about interview the very next day, but I would say it's definitely worth reaching out in case it wasn't a coincidence and it actually did move things along!

The decision comes in an email and I believe you'll be notified of your financial aid package within 10 business days of the acceptance. I was accepted on 2/3 and received my financial aid email on 2/5!
