MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone have any insight for which school would be better for health policy: Emory or Columbia? I'm torn between just committing to Emory or continuing to hold out for getting off Columbia's waitlist.

If any of you have pros/cons for Emory vs. Columbia in general too I'd appreciate anything that can help me make a decision!
look at their company/career outcomes if that helps

What do you guys know about the MPH at Icahn / Mount Sinai? It’s honestly my leading choice as of now due to its reasonable price and location, but there isn’t much info about it out there. Any input is greatly appreciated! Thank uu

You are not alone! Many of us, I am sure, have similar thoughts. I for one, was contemplating whether to augment my experience with public health knowledge, or pivot completely and spend the rest of the career in public health. At times, thinking if this is even the right thing for me given my family commitments, and still not sure. But, I am blessed with a wonderful wife and kids, who are extremely supportive and allowing me to do what I want to do.

Coming from a family of doctors I wanted to follow my dads footsteps and go to med school, but did not do good in school when I was young. Nevertheless in the past 20 years, I have been an engineer, technology geek, people manager and leader, and then human capital management. Along the way, I got myself a Masters degree and an MBA because I wanted to learn and grow. Inspired by some work I did in public health in the business world, and looking to embark on that journey, and see what happens.

Life is quite long to do a lot of things, but time is too short! I would say follow your passion and you will end up exactly where you want to be.
Hi zubear - It's nice to see another engineer with an interest in public health. Is it ok if I PM you to ask a few questions about how you're handling (or have already handled) the transition from engineering to PH.

Im still waiting for scholarship info from them. I guess mount sinai is a big name in terms of healthcare in nyc. Im not sure about the program itself. Not sure why the ranking is in the 70s. Don't know if that matters. Normally I would visit the schools and talk to the students there directly, but this covid has made it a bit more complicated to do that.

In at UW Institute for Public Health Genetics!

On another note, does anyone know the waitlist situation for Yale (biostats)? When will waitlisted people hear about the final decision?
I'm on the waitlist for Yale SBS and I was wondering the same thing. I actually ended emailing the admission director and asking what was the procedure for the waitlist... still haven't heard back.

Have you heard how that process of on-boarding works for doing research under faculty?
I have spoken with 4 Yale students and they all mention doing research but they never mention the process to get that position.
From my dialogues, it seems majority of research is paid.
Hey! From my understanding people get research opportunities through multiple avenues-- I've spoken to students who applied via job listings and students who straight up asked faculty members if there were any opportunities. What I've heard unanimously is that there is no dearth for research opportunities and one would have to go out of their way to not engage in research, especially since there's a required thesis component to the program.

I feel so weird that I keep posting on here. Anyways I'm 80% sure I will be attending Columbia and wanted to know if anybody else was going to. If so, please feel free to pm.
I'll be more than happy to join you guys at Columbia if I can get that...

Has anyone heard anything recently from Columbia about when we should be getting financial aid packages? I'm trying to be patient, but it's been almost two months and this information is all I need to start being able to make a decision
I hope they release the info soon as well!! So hard to compare without knowing the financial implications!

I got in a few weeks ago and it's been agonizing not knowing the financial aid... I really would like to know too but idk since they seem stingy with aid i'm not trying to care too much LOL

Has anyone else committed to the JHU online/part-time MPH program? If so, how did you make your decision?
I just committed, but to be fair, it's also the only school I applied to. I work full time, so the flexibility to take 2-3 years in the program, coupled with the ability to take in-person classes when I am able is huge for me. Also, I love that the MPH allows so much autonomy in choosing courses. I'm 10 years into my public health career, and have a pretty good idea of the areas where I need professional growth. Hopkins will allow me to pick and choose courses in a way a lot of programs would not.

Only by the grace of God! I got into Yale SBS! Thank you all for this supportive community. It has truly helped me so much. I wish you all the best!

Now, I decide between Yale and JHU... does anyone have any advice?
I was thinking the same thing. Does anyone have any info on Yale vs JHU? I was told through colleagues, mentors, and professors that JHU is favored in the public health world and the research opportunities are endless in comparison to Yale, and that JHU ranks significantly higher than Yale in that area.

Lol'ed. No, I agree-- I feel it for everyone as well! I know Harvard was a top choice for many.

This probably belongs more in the pre-med forums, but there is so much support in this thread that I feel comfortable sharing my fears/anxieties/confusion with you all. Honestly, I have no idea what I'm going to do with my school offers and am having doubts about wanting an MPH. I'm a female in my 30s, so time is of the essence with wanting to start a family (thought I would just throw that out there given the ovulating comment lolol). I have always struggled between going MPH or MD, and I rationalized that I could earn both and get an MPH before applying to medical school... but many things changed during this pandemic for me. Part of it was going through the med school app process (which I ultimately decided not to complete given pandemic/MCAT complications), this MPH cycle, and supporting my partner through his own journey as a 3rd year in medical school.

I started off this cycle only considering one-year MPH program, but am waitlisted at my in-state and probably won't get into JHU. I went ahead and applied to two-year programs because I rationalized it would still be an easy decision if I was fortunate enough to get into any schools. But now... I'm embarrassed to even write this out since I know you all put so much heart and soul into this cycle... the more decisions I received the more unsure I became of what to do. Along with JHU, Columbia is a program I have dreamt of attending for such a long time, and I didn't think I would get in.

I hope no one mistakes this post as me being ungrateful of my options or that I only applied to MPH programs to pad my med school candidacy. Public health actually led me towards my journey to medicine and for me, they are very much intertwined. I just really don't know what I am going to do. 🙁
The pandemic has changed things for a lot of people, definitely makes sense to revaluate and maybe apply again next year if you are still unsure. What about part-time classes to at least get some of the coursework out of the way?

You've got amazing experience for sure, keep pursuing work you're interested in while you sort it out I would think. There are also online MPH programs that maybe would benefit somebody with a lot of experience like yourself.

JHU is definitely a massive huge public health school, they have a lot of research going on, but the caveat is that you can't do all of the opportunities available to you at JHU, at Yale they are very good at research as well, but if I was going to go to Yale over JHU I'd make sure that I had a plan with regards to research and what opportunities I wanted to take advantage of at Yale.

I'm thinking about this too! Interesting to see that there seems to be more general interest in Yale than JHU in this year's SDN thread. I'm wondering why that is.

i read somewhere in this thread that if you are not getting any aid they don't notify you of anything... I'm hoping that's untrue but at this point I'm sadly not expecting anything

I was also just rejected from Harvard MPH-45 (SBS). I thought I could have felt worse but I am very grateful for getting into 6/7 schools I have applied. My heart is leaning towards Yale compared to JHU and Columbia - would love to join the conversation about Yale decisions.
Thank you everyone for all your sharing and company in the past few months! The support and community here is incredible. I believe that no matter where we end up in the future, we would be surrounded by great people who are a force of making this world a better place.

Hi Guys,

Long time lurker here who went through all 152 pages of this forum. I'm an international student and have just been rejected from Harvard MPH-45(Global Health). I have to say this was kind of a let down but I am definitely thankful that I had gotten into JHU and Emory earlier. I am leaning a bit towards JHU's one year program since I am thinking of applying for a PHD down the line. Would JHU be better for that route or would I fare better after going to Emory's program? I do know that JHU's program size is pretty large and hence the one on one attention for research might not be available. Thank you so much guys. It always heartened me to see the support in the community here.

Just read that Yale SPH does not give grades - they have an Honors, High Pass, Pass, and Fail system. No GPA. Does anyone know how this would be interpreted for jobs, etc. after grad school? I can imagine that it doesn’t make too much of a difference for PhD programs making their selections, but I wonder how you would report your performance in grad school on a resume for jobs...
That's good to know! And why wouldn't it make much of a difference for PhD programs?

How does waitlisting work? If a space is available in another dept you didnt apply for can you still be accepted even though you applied with another? In other words, is space available for waitlisted students only by the dept they applied for?

Same here - waiting for scholarship. I got in around Nov/December, so it’s a long wait. It’s ranked so low because it’s been redesigned and rebranded from Fordham MPH or ICHAN. It has a great reputation in NY, and wherever Mount Saini hospitals are located. As of now, I think I’m choosing Columbia over any other schools, including Harvard, only because it’s one year for me, and I really love the school since I am an alum and native New Yorker.
With friends in medicine and the MPH field, most have told me that an MPH ranking doesn’t mean much, unlike law/medicine/business. ICHAN is great and the NY tri-state area has some of the highest paid jobs for an MPH. I hope you get a good scholarship!

Even if we don't get grants/scholarships/fellowships though, we should still be notified about loans. I've been hearing that they're just pretty far behind but still sending packages out in the coming weeks. I was curious if anyone had more specific info since they've been saying that for such a long time. But I'm not giving up hope that we'll get some good news in the form of aid from them soon!!

Anybody here planning to go to TAMU? Please let me know. Would like to connect with y'all. 😀

Just got an email from columbia saying im missing documents that are needed to review my financial aid eligibility. It says to log on to the studentviewer.finaid page then click ‘messages’ then ‘documents’ to view what i need to do.
When i log onto that page it just has a bunch lender information disclosure, a bunch of contact info, and a my account, log out, and help tab. No messages or anything like that. Anyone have any advice?

After you log in, click the "Menu" tab on the upper left corner. You should find the messages page option on there!

Hi all!
Has anyone received any financial aid from JHU? Have been accepted to the one year MPH program and wandering if I’m likely to get funding and if so how much. Obviously know it’s very dependent but trying to gauge what kinds of offers people are receiving.
They've been silent for me as well. Accepted on 2/3.

I have two friends who did the MPH program at YSPH and are at the Harvard Chan School for their doctorates (PhDs in Population Health Sciences). I think that shows Yale's grading system won't deter you from getting into "top" doctoral programs. Just don't fail. Get some research done and publications if possible. My thoughts as I'm thinking about the doctorate too!

I got the same email about a missing FAFSA... but they were the first school on my FAFSA list, which I’ve submitted twice at this point! (Original and a revision) wondering anyone is going through the same issue with Columbia? Other schools have confirmed they have my FAFSA.
