MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah same here. I'm hoping that it works in my favor though because it'll give me a chance to update them on my Fall semester grades.

Do we send our Fall Grades directly to them or to AACOMAS?

And does anyone know when they will meet again?

I was told to send the updated transcripts to AACOMAS. And I believe that the adcom will not meet again until the second week of January.

I just got put on the wait list a few weeks ago....Reading through the thread it looks like no one comes of the wait list? Also should I assume that I am in a worse position (Meaning they still have a chance to get in, yet I have a slim chance) then those that haven't heard back after months of waiting like others in this thread?

If it doesn't mention anything about guaranteed admission - then unfortunately you are correct.

blech. i'm an out of state student who doesn't have the greatest application...I completed my application towards the end of September and haven't heard anything yet from this school.

I guess it's good that I haven't received a rejection or a waitlist notice yet, right? MSU-COM is one of my most desired schools so I'm trying to be optimistic here...

Hey guys, I put my deposit in at MSU-COM and got my desired campus, E. Lansing...they sent me a confirmation e-mail on nov. 3rd.

Since then, though - I haven't heard anything! Before I sent my deposit, I got an e-mail from them like every few days with some update to the class of 2015. How come I haven't heard anything since I put my deposit down? Anyone else feel the same way?

~Tarun

also - i havent received an MSUCOM e-mail account either...do we get those later on?

I haven't heard anything either - except an invitation to visit the Macomb campus (where I'll be going). I'm fine with not having them constantly send us stuff - I'm sure we'll have more than enough to do come June. Also, there is the Class of 2015 page on the MSUCOM website that has info if you're craving it.

I know it's laughable to even entertain the secondary at this point in time, but I have a lot of support from my DO physician that I'm shadowing to pursue it nonetheless.

I had a question regarding the Eval form, one DO physician I am shadowing is writing my Eval and he is busy so it might take him some time.

The other one, I'm thinking about just asking one of my letter writers to attach the letter in the interest of time.

I know it's not preferable, but would it be okay considering the fact that I at least have one completed Eval. My due date is Jan 5th, if my Evalulators are taking a long time should I ask for an extension?

Thanks and Happy New year!

I was complete the first week of November and still haven't heard anything from this school.

MSU-COM sends out rejections, right?

So is no news good news?
Also, is it worth calling into the school to ask about your current status?

I've heard they just wait until the end of the cycle. Unless you've been accepted or waitlisted, there's no way of knowing if your app has even been looked at until April-ish. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I received an email from MSUCOM a little while back listing the course which I would need to complete before being admitted. However, organic chemistry lab, which I have yet to take, was not listed as one of those courses. Does anyone know if orgo lab is a requirement for admission at MSUCOM?? (their website only said 16 hours of chemistry and didn't list specific courses)

I am pretty positive it is, I would call to double check.

nope not yet. all this waiting is driving me insane.

You guys are waiting on acceptance offers, right? I was under the assumption that MSU didn't do interviews, though one other source said they occasionally do. What's the word on this?

Yes, they are waiting for offers of admission. MSUCOM generally doesn't do interviews, but I believe they will occasionally request them if someone is considered "borderline."

Good luck to you guys--be patient! I was complete mid-October and was offered admission in December. I deferred for a year (finishing my MPH and continuing to work), but am super excited to start come June 2012! If there is anyone else waiting a year, contact me 🙂

this forum seems to be dying off...sign that the class is basically full? Is there still a chance for people who haven't heard yet or should we pretty much count MSUCOM out at this point?

There's still a chance, but there's not much to talk about because the admission office won't tell you anything unless you're accepted or waitlisted. Plus there's no interviews to discuss, since MSU doesn't do them. It's Wednesday, so hopefully a few more SDNers will hear back today... :xf:

Accepted woo! Got the email at 10:55. Complete November 15.

Congrats!! are you in-state or out of state, I was complete Nov 30th and am OOS and still waiting... also do you mind posting your stats?

congrats sally 🙂
I was complete Nov 30 as well. Maybe we are coming up soon (like next week I hope so I don't have to go to my two other interviews the following week!!! *crosses fingers*)

Thanks! I am in-state. My MCAT was on the low side (25O) but high GPA 4.0.

Ok, this might be a less-than-neutral environment for this question, but I would like to know your opinions... if you got into both, would you attend COM or CHM?

Here's my current reasoning, let me know what you think. If the following premises are true:
1) CHM is slightly more selective than COM
2) As far as curriculum goes, the two schools are effectively identical (CHM of course does not have OMM)
... should I simply attend the more selective school, to perhaps get a leg up on residency standings? Though I have not yet nailed down a future specialization, I am currently leaning towards cardiology.

(For those who are looking for comparative stats, here are mine🙂
- In state
- MSU physiology senior
- 3.63 cGPA, 3.55 sGPA, 32R MCAT (10 bio, 10 verbal, 12 phys)
- Completed both COM and CHM secondaries 08/2010
- Admitted to COM 09/2010
- On hold CHM 08/2010 (haven't heard anything further yet)

Thanks in advance, and good luck to all!

I would say look to the school that better fits you. I personally chose COM because the clinical rotations appealed to me more - I can do rotations in SE Michigan, along with Western Michigan. Whereas if I went to CHM I would be forced to either Flint, Grand Rapids, or 3 very northern - read rural- cities, which didn't appeal to me. From there it was an easy decision.

Also, COM is very well established not just in Michigan/DO community but the medical community as a whole - while CHM is fairly new. I have no doubt CHM will be a fantastic school in the next 10 years, I just don't want to wait that long :-(. Also, I don't like PBL which CHM uses as compared to COM's systems-based.

COM and CHM both have their match lists posted on their respective websites so you can check those out and compare. I can't say too much about cardiology - so I apologize. I would warn you that the specialty you want to do will probably change while in Med school.

I remember a doctor I shadowed told me when he entered med school he wanted to be an Anesthesiologist, but did a rotation and found out after the 2nd day he hated it! Keep your options open - that's all I'm saying.

Finally, join the MSUCOM Class of 2015 group on Facebook! Get to meet some of your potential future classmates, we don't bite - I promise!

Advise well taken. I neglected to take rotations into account when I made my comparison. I might need to look into them further.

As far as facebook goes, sorry I don't have one 🙄

Although our core science course work is identical to CHM's, there is more than just OMM that is different in regards to our other courses. Our clinical skills course work is much more accelerated than most schools in general. As a COM student you start practicing sensitive male and female exams in your spring semester as a first year on payed professionals. The curriculum is geared to having COM students prepared to hit the ground running in their clinical rotations.

Also, in regards to being competitive for residency positions it really won't matter where you go. It will depend more on how well you do on your boards, clinical rotations, and the connections you make with the programs you are interested in.

CHM was created roughly five years before COM lol... Both are well established in Michigan.

I apologize for that mix-up, I must have been confused. Still doesn't explain the fact that SE MI is the most populated/diverse portion of Michigan and the closest campus CHM has is in Flint about 1.5 hours away.

I'm speaking from personal experience growing up in SE Michigan, COM is significantly more represented here.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make was both are viable options. For me, I choose COM because I don't like PBL and I have family/friends/etc. here in SE Michigan where COM has a lot of rotations.

I really hope I'm not knocking CHM, it was a fantastic program - but it just wasn't for me.

Has MSU COM sent out any straight rejections yet? I have been complete since late August and have not heard a peep. I’m OOS with a 3.5 and 29 so not fantastic but also not horrible stats. I wish admissions was a little more open with where applicants stood in the process...

i'm in the same boat as you. whats worse is that every time i call them to see how my application is doing, the admissions receptionist is incredibly rude and condescending.

From what I heard from someone in the admissions office the class will be filled after this week's meeting. IMO MSUCOM probably has one of the worst ways of selecting students

hmm. that's interesting. i thought i heard of people getting acceptance letters to MSU-COM all the way up to march.

Or til the class fills up as the website says they like to fill up the class by December. This was my top choice but I have other acceptances so if I don't get in I wont be that upset about it. Also they will still meet after the class is full to set up both waiting lists

I'm pretty sure they have sent out rejection letters already. During one of my meetings in Fee I overheard some talk of sending them out this past fall (mid October-ish) and one of the advisors said that they send them out near immediately after a student has been rejected. I don't know of anyone personally who has received one though. I was also told that sometimes if someone is borderline and gets rejected by adcom, they send the applicant's file to the dean and sometimes--though very very rarely--he'll override adcom's decision and grant the student admission. I know it's such a long wait for you and others like you, but keep being patient.

I haven't had an issue with the receptionists being rude on the phone ( I think I called maybe twice before I was complete), but make sure you're still polite--I also heard that they will document your behavior on the phone if you become rude.

Long story short--if you were outright rejected, you most likely would have heard by now 🙂 good luck!

Just curious----how often are you calling them? I'm not saying it's acceptable for anyone to be rude, but as I understand it, there are only 2 receptionists working in that office and they are responsible for a lot of the processing of paperwork, etc. I can imagine they'd get a bit overwhelmed if the phone was ringing every two seconds while they were trying make headway on the applications students are constantly calling about.

I formed pretty good relationships with a couple of the advisors there, kept them informed on my application process, and they in turn actually kept me updated on how my application was doing up until I found out I was accepted. If you made a point to get to know an MSUCOM advisor, I would check in with them to see if they can give you any insight...

i've called them maybe on 3 seperate occasions after submitting my secondary spread out over the last 3 months.

the woman who picks up always acts like i'm a complete ***** for trying to find out how the process is going.

Does anyone know if this is actually true? Where did you hear this from? If it's true I guess we are all hoping for good news tomorrow or considering MSU out of the picture...?
