MSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Practice questions for any of the classes were extremely helpful to gage how they were going to test you, and help you think through what you were studying. The survival guide had a large question bank for the lecture exam portion of anatomy. However, it wont help much for the practicals. For $25, it is worth spending the money. For fall and spring, usually there are plenty of practice tests for each of the exams posted on Angel. Also, the Board Review Series subject reviews provide an extra pool of questions to study from. Reading your notes 4 or 5 times will only help so much. Doing practice questions will show you what you are not getting, and you learn from making mistakes. For the anatomy lab portion, Netter & Rohen Atlases were very beneficial. Also, the lab quizzes used images from Rohen. If you like e-books, you can usually find most of the books free online.

P.S. - I agree that Spring is/was rough. Glad it is almost over!

I guess electives you take should depend heavily on what career you're looking for, but that doesn't mean you should be taking hard science (since you're going to medical school). My advice: take this opportunity to take stuff you won't be able to take in med school (the community diagnosis course sounds like a great idea). Any idea of how you think you will use your public health degree in your career? I would talk to Dr. Rip (program director) about what you'd like to do and he will be able to make good recommendations.

One thing I liked about the program is the flexibility offered by the practicum experience. You can essentially do anything you want for the experience, and your capstone paper doesn't necessarily have to be about the practicum experience (mine wasn't).

The online courses have pros and cons - it took a little getting used to as I had done four years of in-person classes (as you probably did too). I missed the face to face interaction with professors, but it also allowed more flexibility in your schedule. I think that's the whole idea behind the program though - lots of my classmates were/are physicians, PAs, nurses, don't live in Michigan, etc.

Thanks for your insight! My background is in international health and this is really where my most of my focus has been thus far. Ideally I'd like to eventually do some work in international & preventative health. I'm going to Brazil this summer and planning on doing my practicum in Ghana. I found several of the electives that PPH offers to look pretty interesting, and the counterfeit pharm was one of them. Whichever other elective I decide will probably end up being one that is more cultural/global health oriented--I'll definitely get in touch with Dr. Rip to see what he may suggest!

If I want to specialize in cardiology, is it advised that I attend an allopathic school over an Osteopathic school? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This is more of a general question that should be posted in the pre-osteopathic forum instead of the MSUCOM class thread. Also, you will get better responses and has more than likely been answered before. Osteopathic med students have their own match and can participate in the MD match. Where you go to school won't be nearly as huge of a barrier. It will depend on how well you do in med school and your board score, generally speaking. Worry more about getting into a med school and doing well, then you can move forward into worrying about a specialty, which is typically subject to change while in med school. Any further questions would be, as I said above, better suited in the pre-osteo. or osteopathic forums.

I received an email this morning saying I am no longer a candidate. Good luck to all you waitlisters...I'm sure I'll be back posting in a few months for the next cycle. Also good luck to those of you who have finals coming up 🙂.

I'm traditionally not big on blogs or threads but it just so happens that i couldn't sleep tonight and the excitement of starting school in 2 months has gotten to me. Still somewhat amazed that i found this and also how many pages there are. At any rate I was accepted back in November (just 7 days after I got all my materials in). Subsequently, I chose the DMC campus right away as it is closer to where i live and after having visited the campuses, I am quite glad I did. If anyone (from DMC or other campuses) is interested in connecting on fb let me know, it'd be nice to get to know some people before classes start! Congratulations to all whom were accepted to 2015! I look forward to hearing from you.

I am a first year at the DMC campus (soon to be second), and I believe your class made a facebook page already.

It can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2305502#!/group.php?gid=103891869673493

also if you have any other questions about the campus or want to come check it out again just pm me. I definitely suggest getting to know your classmates before school starts, you're going to be stuck with them for awhile 😛

Thanks for the info, it is greatly appreciated! I might just take you up on checking it out again. I do have some questions regarding books. I have a couple of friends who are graduating from MSUCOM this year and they recommended to get in touch with people a year ahead to figure out which books are truly needed for classes as they found they wasted money on books. Maybe you could lend some insight to this topic.

For sure man, just let me know.

In regards to the books, I just got netter and rowen for anatomy. But to be honest I rarely used them, and most of the time if I didn't have mine I would borrow a classmates.

For all the classes, just get the course pack. Everything you need for the classes are in the course pack, I never use books!

If you don't mind E-Books, I know a few sites you can download netter, rohen and Clinically Oriented for the summer anatomy course. You can probably track them down via google for free. PM me, and ill hook you up with a couple of good websites.

Hey p1acebo, you have any recommendations on where to live for the DMC campus?

My gf is going to Wayne for grad school so we're looking for a place somewhat nearby. Don't want to live right in Detroit as we'd like to avoid getting shot. We're thinking about maybe somewhere downriver (don't know if your familiar with MI terms), like Lincoln Park or Dearborn. Do you think the commute is far? There's not a lot good choices to live around Detroit heh.

Sorry to jump in at your question, but I have a great advice for you. I live in Dearborn( East dearborn), it takes me 14 minutes to get to wayne state university, traffic on 94 never an issue if you go early morning, and you can avoid that by taking warren ave east all the way to wayne or msucom dmc. Dearborn is the closest and safest city to live in around the detroit area. housing is at all time cheap, Middle eastern food is good and there is a lot of varities and choices for recreational and shopping activities. If I dont feel like driving to detroit, I can go to U of M dearborn library, it is open from 8 am till 12 midnight and I study there. good luck in your pick and congrats on starting school soon. let me know if i can help.
thanks

Hey thanks for the tip. I'll definitely look into Dearborn. Assuming the whole city doesn't explode and riot at that crazy preacher guy lol.

Also you mentioned east Dearborn. Is that the "good" side. Anyplace in Dearborn I should avoid or place I should look into? Any living complexes you would recommend?

I guess you not that informed because that crazy Pastor (Terry Jones) is located in Dearborn not Detroit. And if any rioting occur, that means it will be in the city of Dearborn. You might want to read more about that situation, instead of reprimanding Detroit for things it has nothing to do with. Detroit is not a great place to live in, but you could be less ignorant (in reference to you thinking you will be shot) about asking about safe places to live for a DMC commute.

OK, let's make one thing clear, there ARE nice places to live in downtown and midtown Detroit. I currently live in downtown Detroit and love it so yes there are GREAT places in Detroit to live. Obviously no one is going to pick the bad neighborhoods of Detroit to live in or for that matter even be around, that is just common sense.

In regards to your question pucciola, I have to be honest I am unfamiliar with specific places downriver and Dearborn to live in. I know most of my Arabic classmates live in Dearborn, and there are nice places to live (there mini downtown is nice too). I also have a few classmates commute from downriver (Trenton, Flat rock, etc.), but they commute from their parents home. I would say a 3rd of my class lives downtown/midtown, a 3rd lives in Royal Oak/Ferndale and the rest commute. If you don't want to live in the city have you checked out any places in Royal Oak? There are some nice places there as well.

I LOL'ed at this so hard. When did I ever say that he was located in Detroit? I said that RIOTING would OCCUR in Dearborn. In no way did I connect the Pastor with Detroit. Honestly, if you're trying to argue back, PLEASE read more carefully, it makes you seem less "misinformed."

As to me "reprimanding" Detroit, its hard for me to be ignornat since I used to live in Metro Detroit and worked in the city. Even in the nice downtown area crack heads have approached me on the streets. In MY experience, Detroit is a bad place to live, and you took my statement of getting shot a little too literal, it meant to be a light hearted joke. Although based on the crime rates and statistcs, your chances aren't that slim.

Thanks for the tip. I'm sure there are some good places in Detroit to live, but these "good" places is still a few minutes drive from a "bad" place in Detroit. Everybody has their opinion but I'm just saying Detroit is not for me. I'm currently interning in Royal Oak and it is a very nice city, but the rent is a tad high here.

Your welcome, is there a particular reason you were looking at downriver or Dearborn as opposed to the Royal Oak/Ferndale area? Royal Oak rent can be high, but if you still want to be in that area I would check out Ferndale because places there tend to have lower rent. I would say your commute from any of the surrounding suburbs is doable (15-20min depending on how close you are). You could also check out suburbs like Berkley or Madison Heights... they should have lower rent than Royal Oak as well.

And yes I understand Detroit is not for everyone, have you toured our campus yet? "Technically," you could say our campus is a short drive from a "bad" place in Detroit and if that is something that concerns you then you should take that into consideration. Our campus however, is extremely safe and has security staffed 24/7 who would be willing to walk you out to your car (our parking is extremely close to our building too) if you wanted to.

Was the DMC campus your first choice?

I was looking at downriver/Dearborn because my girlfriend is from downriver and she currently works in Dearborn, so it would be perfect for her. Royal Oak is a nice city and wouldn't mind living there, but just as you mentioned the rent is high. I did hear of Ferndale and my other intern mentioned I should look into Berkley. Unfortunately, everybody has a different opinion on locations, some say good, others bad. Probably in the end I would just have to drive around and see for myself.

Regarding the DMC site, I have no quarrels about being in Detroit. Going to school there and living in Detroit is two completely different things. Having worked in downtown Detroit I do think it is a beautiful area. EL was actually my first choice, and all my soon to be second year friends are located in EL, but I think that it would be selfish of me to attend there and separate from my girlfriend. She will be attending at Wayne for grad school so its actually perfect that there is a DMC site for me. I can always meet new people and having her support will be an immense help in school. Plus, I did tour DMC site and I liked the facility. Fee Hall is, to be honest a little embarrassing compared to other schools lol.

I understand you were attempting to make a joke, but if you're familiar with the area then you really should know there are many people from the city that would take offense to your comment about being shot. Honestly, I didn't realize you were joking (maybe next time throw in a wink face?) and you came across as the typical individual who knows nothing of Detroit other that what he sees or hears about on TV---I definitely had a "shaking my head" moment after reading it. I've met a number of people who are very proud of Detroit and hate it when people make disparaging comments about their city---so just be more conscientious about what you say and who you say it to.

Also...regardless of the anonymity on this site, it's a bit bold of you to imply that a future colleague of yours is "dumb" for simply misreading your post. I realize you were on the defensive, but it's really not that big of a deal to take it any further than a "Hey, you misread/misinterpreted what I posted."

That all being said...congrats on your acceptance at MSUCOM and hope you enjoy the DMC site--it's great. I wish Fee were a little more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but I'm looking forward to my time in the dungeon all the same 🙂

You make a point, perhaps I came off a bit harsh, I made the necessary edit. Still, if one attempts to call out on another, espcially to accuse of ignorance, one shouldn't expect the nicest reply.

He actually indirectly gave me a compliment while criticizing my reply because he said I was, "less misinformed" which means I'm more informed lol....just saying

Yea I noticed while reading your previous reply. But anyways, have you met anyone else who accepted the DO/MPH offer? I wonder who all is doing it with us.

And have you talked to Mariana yet about the Brazil trip? she supposed to be having a group meeting soon in Fee hall.

Nope I haven't met anyone else yet. I've emailed back and forth with Mariana quite a bit and she sent me some pictures from when she was in Salvador a few weeks back. She's really open to questions and fast to respond. I'm not sure if I'll make the group meeting--I was hoping to go to the original one on Sunday. The meeting is now scheduled on my birthday and I'm supposed to be playing in a softball game in Ann Arbor for my job that evening. I might be able to swing both I guess...I'd be a dirty hot mess but oh well..lol What airline are you flying?

I haven't had any luck in reaching the admissions office by phone. I was placed on the waitlist a few months ago and was told that if I hadn't heard anything by 4/1 to contact them. Does anyone know the status of movement off the list?

Thanks!

Hi Deadlywarbler. If you were on the low priority wait list( the email that doesnt have a guranteed spot for the 2016 class) than your chances for getting in this year are very slim to nothing.sorry to say that. and I advise you at this point to call and setup an appointment with an admission counselor( kathy schaefer in Lansing or Molina in detroit), the earlier the better, they will pull your file and they will tell you exactly what to do, they are so honest about their work.
However if you are on the high priority waitlist( the email that have a guranteed spot for next year class) dont give up. you can still be called or emailed for a spot even on the last day of admissions, and thats like a week before white coat ceremony. The class is full now but it is the same case every year, people tend to drop their seat for other colleges, or defer for another year, so you still have a chance if you were on this list.
DONT GIVE UP REGARDLESS OF YOUR SITUATION, IF NOT THIS YEAR, YOU ALWAYS HAVE A SHOT NEXT YEAR. GOOD LUCK.

So far priceline.com has the cheapest flights that leaves July 1st or 2nd on American Airlines. They running right now at the price of about $1360 roundtrip. Have you found any price cheaper?

Do people from the low waitlist get bumped to the high waitlist, as the high waitlist gets movement? I was placed on the low waitlist in January, and I'm really not expecting to get in this year. But I wouldn't mind getting bumped to the high waitlist and be guaranteed an acceptance for next year...

Have you talked to an admission counselor yet about your situation. If you haven't I would reccomend you talk to Lorie because she is very helpful and blunt about people current situations/positions. Her email is [email protected]

Yeah, I've already met months ago with Katie. She was really helpful 🙂
For me it's just the MCAT, cause I took it twice and they didn't like that my second score was actually worse than my initial, so they waitlisted me. I'm retaking it in July, but I'm still hoping for the off chance that they bump people from the low to high waitlist. Not sure if they do that, though.

Adcom stopped meeting about a month ago. The only people being admitted at this point will be from the high wait list unless a ridiculously large amount of people withdraw. People from the low list do not go to the high list. FWIW, the high list will probably see relatively a lot of movement over the next two weeks.

I wish Fee were a little more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but I'm looking forward to my time in the dungeon all the same 🙂

You will learn to enjoy the asbestos riddled dungeon 😛

Nope! I've been checking Kayak/priceline and have been getting about the same results. I usually fly Delta but the price is absolutely ridiculous---2500+ so I'm kinda salty. Oh well...
I'll be buying my ticket to fly out the 1st since Mariana recommended to arrive on the 2nd. Have you had confirmation on the fellowship yet?

No confirmation yet, but I know I'm getting a fellowship for sure, just don't know the amount yet since the fellowship essay due date was just this past wednesday.

Just deferred my acceptance until next year. I hope one of you waiting gets it!

How are you guys determining whether you are low or high on the waitlist? Everytime I call, they won't tell my ranking and will only tell me if I am in the top 10. The original letter just said that I was place on "the waitlist". Any help you can give would be great! Thanks!

If it said you were on the waitlist with a guarantee acceptance for next year, then you are on the high waitlist.

It might be early for this but..... has anyone from the low priority waitlist been accepted?

I will be withdrawing my acceptance tomorrow as i have received acceptances from 2 of my top choices. Good luck to the rest of you.

For the class of 2015 EL-COMers,

I'm selling my twin size mattress and box spring for 10 bucs. It's in good condition. Please PM me if you want it. I can send you pictures if you want.

Not that I've heard. I'm on the regular waitlist myself. When does movement typically begin?

I'm on the high waitlist and haven't gotten a call yet. However, I've been calling for the past few weeks, and just yesterday found out that I'm now in the top 10 of the waiting list. So there has been some movement, but no way of knowing exactly how much.

Hey guys I was just accepted off the alternate list at CHM. I will be withdrawing from COM. Good luck everybody.

Hey everyone,

I just got accepted off the high priority waiting list earlier this week. Does anyone know how the campuses fill up (will I most likely end up at East Lansing or a Satellite campus)?

I am hoping I will get assigned to Macomb or Detroit so I can commute from home, otherwsie I will be scrambling to make arrangements in East Lansing.

Good luck to everyone still waiting, don't give up!
