NCSU c/o 2017 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I did! It was great to see the school and meet great people from the c/o 2016. Also got a chance to chat with lovely admin folks and ask some questions.

I wanted to go to the science museum but we hit the art museum instead. The current exhibit is amazing!

I couldn't have asked for better weather either. It's snowing and the roads are all black ice today here in CO. I still have a bit of sunburn from Saturday though, ha.

Did we get a chance to meet, Fox? I really enjoyed talking to everyone I met 🙂

I didn't meet you, but you met my roommate I know (not to be creepy- haha). I was at the thing on Saturday in a grey v-neck and patched up jeans. How's the decision making going?

Oh ya. I totally got sun too. Woke up Sunday and was like why is my chest all red and splotchy. Oh ya I forgot the sun exists

That pesky sun, always existing and everything 🙂 The amusing thing is that I put sunscreen on my face. So my face was good to go, but I have a nice red neckline burned into my chest. Very fetching.

I remember seeing someone in patched jeans, but I might be misremembering. There were a fair number of people there! I didn't really talk to anyone from this upcoming year. Were there many c/o 2017 folks there? It seemed like mostly 2016 people, which I didn't mind, because I had a lot of questions!

The decision making is coming along. I was left with a very positive impression of the school and of Raleigh. Every time I come out to the East, I'm always impressed anew by the amount of TREES you people have. I couldn't really get a feel for the city at times, because I couldn't see very far. Out here, if we don't do anything with a patch of land, it turns to brown grass and maybe a little scrub. Out there, it seems like the forest is always waiting for a chance to bust through.

Anyway, I think I'm going to pull the trigger on this thing in a day or two. Unless something drastically changes, it's very likely I'll be headed your way this summer. 🙂 At this point I would just really like to commit so I can start making plans to move and handle everything.

I started looking for houses today (I have to move out of current residence and since I'm committed to at least 6 more years- figured I'd be better off buying).

I'm looking forward to checking out the museum park!

Fox, I'm trying to figure the logistics of getting residency and maybe buying a house as well. Tricky business. I need to go check out the housing PDF.

Not sure if anyone here can answer this, but I'm anxiously awaiting the waitlist at NCSU to start moving. Does anyone know how long you have to decide if accepted off the waitlist?

Ditto ^^...I've accepted an offer at another school but the thought that I could get called from NCS is still in the back of my mind...wish this process wasn't so stressful! lol I'm hoping for an IS waitlist call...I know..not likely but still a glimmer of hope!

I totally saw you. Thought about saying hi, but didnt want to come across as a Facebook stalker.

lmao...you were the only person from fb or on here who I probably would have recknognized from photos (I thought)...but I didnt see you...or maybe I did...too much happening. We can say hey in August... I stalk you too, so its totally cool 🙂

It also would have been totally weird for me to run out of the volleyball game just to say hi to you... Saw that you found a townhouse! Exciting! I'm relooking for housing because my roommates boyfriend is moving in and that would definitely overcrowd our house.

True! LOL

Yeah I did...I am sending in the application and everything this week so if everything goes good :xf::xf::xf: It will be mine! Living with a roommate would be so much easier (and cheaper!) if it wasn't for my kid, pets, and boyfriend (who wil be there pretty often). TV shows make an apartment full of people look fun when in real life its pretty awful! Good luck on your housing hunt!

Hey guys! I'm kinda late joining the party, but I've been creeping on this forum for a while now and figured it was time for me to join 🙂

I am so excited to meet all of you in the fall!! I sent a request to join the Facebook group earlier today but am still waiting to be accepted 🙁

I'm bummed I couldn't make it to the event last week, but there is still the Open House and I'll probably plan another visit down to Raleigh to look at housing. Any recommendations for apartments?

For anybody looking to buy a house check out Carla Freund at Carlafreund.com or call her at 919-602-8489. She was my realtor last year and I can't say enough good things about her. Congrats on your acceptance and choice to attend NCSU as well.

I'm a student already and have a realtor, but thanks!

So I just chatted with a person in the Student Services Office today- the roster for 2017 is not yet finalized. They're still waiting to hear from some people- and expect to have it somewhat finished in a week. As far as in state applicants- at least one has moved off of the waitlist. I know a few from OOS have moved off from SND alone. I'm hoping I'll hear good news from the CVM because unfortunately I'm not hearing much from the job market, which is a total bummer! :/

I also gleened a little more information on the process- They obviously want to maintain class balance (ex: 90 small animal students out of 100 would be crazy, and not enough resources, etc), so that's a pretty big factor, what track you applied/are interested in. Then they take people that can fit that role and decide on a case by case basis. So you aren't "ranked", but they may compare you to other waitlisted applicants. If needed, they convene the admissions committee to aid in making decisions. At least, this is what I gathered from the conversation. May be common knowledge to some, may not to others so I thought I'd post it.

I've only seen one declined acceptance on SDN.. I haven't checked the waitlist thread though

I know this is a little late, but as an OOS wait listed applicant, was I supposed to send in an acceptance, anyway?

I'll check her out. Still sorting the pros/cons of buying...really hoping to buy! Any OOS people who bought a place when they came in? Juggling buying and trying to be sensitive to my application for residency is going to be tricky, and advice would be wonderful 🙂

I don't think so, but don't take my word for it.

Anyone creeping on the forum who's an OOS applicant? I have yet to talk at significant length with any 2017 OOSers, though I had a great time with c/o 2016 people a few weeks ago!

Hygebeorht...if you buy a house make sure that you understand the rules to establish residency i.e. DO NOT GET ANY MONEY from your parents. I can't remember which thread i saw it in but the only NC State person to be denied residency in her class was the one that her parents bought/helped pay for a house! They actually thought it would help her because she owned but the rules are weird about parents helping out when it comes to establishing residency.

Good point, Nerd. That was one of the things we had to consider. To play it safe, I think we'll rent a year and then reevaluate. Now for the fun task of finding a place...

We have 3 cats and many "pet-friendly" places set their pet limit at 2. Has anyone had luck wrangling an exception? I imagine being a vet student might help my cause, but I don't know.

I called admissions yesterday and she told me the same--that they were still finalizing the class and would know in about a week if the in-state waitlist would move...she didn't say it already had. She told you that? Wish she had told me when I asked..I don't understand how they're still "finalizing" when the deadline for answers was the 15th...I'm just praying for a miracle here...I'm set to start in August regardless but I REALLY need to go to State so I can avoid 350K in debt...

:highfive: Aren't you glad you didn't drop animal nutrition? 😛

I'm SO glad! Now I'll be super motivated for the final in that class next week, 😛.

I didn't expect to get a call like that so soon!

I got a call from Mr. Huckel today. I'm off of the OOS waitlist!

Congrats!! I heard another OOS student got a call last week, so you're the second person I know of 😀

Looking forward to meeting you in August! Now, go ace that nutrition final!

OMG OMG you're coming, right?! Congratulations! You have to feel over the moon!

I hope you can avoid that debt, tigerlady. They are probably still finalizing because they're going down the waitlist, I expect, and people on the waitlist get a little bit of time to decide to (like 24-48 hours I think. Any WLers who can verify?

The debt is definitely scary...
but I think I'm confused because I asked her for an idea on whether the IS waitlist would move and she told me they wouldn't know if it was going to move for about another week. So maybe they're finalizing the OOS waitlist and OOS students first..?? But then someone said that she told them it moved already...just confused! lol

It could take a while because as other waitlist move ie if an in state person really wants to go to an out of state school and they get called off the waitlist it provides an opening if they are willing to forgo the deposit.

It's not finalized til mid may usually.

Yep. A big part of this, at least from what I understand, is things like deferrals, proof of residency issues, money issues, and some people are waiting to hear back from other schools to decide. We're all waiting on each other, basically, lol. And I 100% understand the high tuition problem, it's why I couldn't go with my only other acceptance, St. George's was just way too expensive for me. It really sucked saying no, but I couldn't justify the cost given the state of the economy & the profession. :/
(It's odd how somehow ~$160k is OK, but ~$300k isn't. Once it gets over $100k you're talking crazy amounts of money, imo. )

You can always call the office again, but I only found out someone moved from the IS list because I specifically asked if there had been movement. I know they can't release personal info such as what track they were or anything, but I wanted some type of ETA on what is going on currently. Also, it's administration at a big school- they're going to drag their feet on stuff sometimes. It happens. You just gotta roll with the punches and keep on doing what you're doing. As for me? I'm focusing on my last few weeks of this degree and finding a new (better) job as my plan B. At worst, I work there for a while and reapply. Best case? I work there, get accepted, and potentially come back to work during breaks. I'm just hoping that the fact my application status is in limbo won't scare off too many hiring managers. 🙂

As an aside, anyone want a master's student who is pretty good at cell culture & immunohistochemical techniques including flow cytometry? 😀

Wanna help me with my thesis project? I came from a physics lab so this biology stuff is making me crazy. It's like intellectually I understand what is going on, but I am inept at working in a biology lab....

I was told yesterday and I have to respond by Monday, April 29th, so I have a few days.

...perhaps? 😀 I graduate this May with a Master of Physiology and a Graduate Certificate in Molecular Biotechnology, so I'll have some paper to back up what I've learned. I'm currently at a small animal clinic that I like working at, but the pay is abysmal and I really need a better job. I've been throwing in applications at pretty much any opening at the LAR or CVM, but no dice so far. It's times like this where I regret not just going for the PhD. Blagh.

Yep, you apparently get 2-3 business days to respond/confirm.

I just got bumped to the admit list yesterday, and now that I'm done with my physio final I can run around screaming like an idiot, haha.

Trying to pick an ISP. Time Warner seems expensive and flakey. ATT is doing this UVerse BS...is there no DSL left in Raleigh anymore?

What do you guys use? I'm looking for at least 5 Mbps download, as cheap as possible.

I hate ISPs...

We have TW. It works well for us. I think we have 10 Mbps and we pay $30 a month on an introductory offer. Our plan is to ask for another good rate when that offer expires or go with someone else who has an introductory offer. If that happens we can eventually go back to TW and maybe even get $200 out of it. 🙄

Not bad! The intro rates weren't as favorable with TW when I checked, and their customer service is legendary for being terrible. I went with ATT instead. We'll see how it works out. I got them to waive the fee for equipment and it's 3 Mbps for $30/mo. If that's too slow for us, we will go up to 6 Mbps. I'm going to miss the arrangement I have here. I pay $12.50 a month for 10ish Mbps. How? I keep asking them for a rate drop and threaten to go with another provider (I do mean it, can't afford more), and I split my wireless with my next-door neighbor.

Also checked provider speeds with Netflix. They have a handy page where they keep track of who delivers what speed. http://ispspeedindex.netflix.com/usa

If ATT sucks, and I get a great intro offer with TWC, I might give them a whirl. WE SHALL SEE

I use TWC, but I don't get TV or phone service. I pay around $80/mo for their best internet and it's generally worth it. But considering who I live with (computer programmer) and what I do with the internet (gaming, ALL of my entertainment/TV/movies), it's worth it.

If only we could get Google Fiber. /sigh

Google Fiber would be amazing. Oh well...

I just moved. Got here Sunday, and the AT&T people have been out to the house pretty much every day since then. Turned out a wire was frayed from rubbing a tree! We had power out for about 25 hours but now I'm back up with good internet speed. So luxurious!
