NCSU c/o 2018 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It was two years ago, don't take my specific words to heart! Haha. You could probably respond to the email and ask about your admission status though - I know one of my classmates' letters got lost in the mail and they ended up just sending her a PDF version of it after-the-fact.

I didn't receive any email about the Open House. Pretty sure I was rejected then. Oh wells. Off to Colorado!

Congrats to everyone who got in!!!! 😀 You guys are awesome!!!

I have to say, I'm very very impressed by how willing and eager the administration, students, and faculty are to answer my questions.

Lab Vet, I won't be able to attend the Open House/reception but I'm excited to meet you in August!
I take it that means your heading to Raleigh with me to attend NCSU?? Fantastic!! Have fun in Korea, by the way! What are you doing there? I'll let you know how the Open House and Welcome Day goes...and will send your regards to our future classmates!

CSU is a fantastic school and Fort Collins is one of my favorite cities : o)
Yes! @cadisestrama: My furry son's veterinarian attended CSU and he is absolutely fabulous! Before the inception of the joint USU/WSU program, many, many veterinarians from Utah attended CSU on account of WICHE (the other veterinarian in the practice is also a CSU grad). CSU is a wonderful school!! Although I've never been to Fort Collins (only to Denver), I've heard that it's a great place to live. My own boss asked me why I wasn't applying there, as he thought the culture would be right up my alley. Enjoy! You'll be getting a top flight education in a beautiful area of the country. Take it from me- the Rockies are breathtaking!!

Yes, officially decided today 🙂 I'm going to Korea with my mom to tour around, visit some family and have some fun in the motherland. Haven't been in 10-11 years, so I'm super excited.

Woo hoo! Awesome! Can't wait to meet you!! Have a GREAT time in Korea!! Eat some awesome, authentic food 😉 See you in August, and well before that here on SDN.

Rejected 🙁 that makes 4 waitlists and 2 rejections. This has not turned out like I had hoped...

Thanks Lab Vet!! Yeah I'm excited to see the Rocky Mountains, haven't really seen them before.

I'm sorry cloverbug. 🙁 I hope that you get off the waitlists! Are you still waiting from any other schools?

I replied to gugoodoll via email, but I'll copy/paste here in case it will help others:

Yes, there are opportunities to work for pay in the hospital, even as first years. There is not super stiff competition, or at least there wasn't in my class, as a lot of people were worried about handling the workload and didn't want to take on more responsibility, but each class is different.

The faculty is great, in general, and will work hard for you if they see you working hard and if you request help. I think you would find the faculty puts in a lot of their free time for us.

There is lots of hands-on animal interaction. We have the TAU, which is a working farm on campus, and we go down there about once a week to learn how to handle farm animals, do procedures, etc. We only have one clinical year, but we have plenty of hands-on time with animals in the other years, including surgery class our second year.

Extra time is relative. People make time for what they need to be normal enough and maintain their grades. It depends on the grades you want and how much time you need to feel normal, so I can't answer this very helpfully, sorry. I am definitely a busy bee, but I have been busier. My advice? Find a place to live as close to campus as you can. Several of my classmates live 30 min to an hour away, and that eats up valuable time for them.

As far as culture, that depends on the class. On the whole it's a fairly positive place, and surprisingly tolerant/accepting for a southern school (at least in my experience). We say that every other year is crazy/neurotic, and that's my year, so if you choose to attend NCSU, you'll be in a cool class (if the pattern holds, lol).

There is an embarrassment of opportunities, far more than you can take advantage of. Students can apply for funding for a wide range of things through SCAVMA and other clubs, and there are plenty of summer opportunities too. You will not be at a loss. Also, if you're interested in any government and/or research work, we are right by the Triangle and within a day's drive of DC and Atlanta (CDC).

Overall, I am happy here. The strengths are the affordable education, the beautiful campus, and a young-school attitude of "let's change things up and fix stuff." The weaknesses are communication and the young-school attitude mentioned above. You'll be a guinea pig class, just like mine and the ones above us. There are lots of curricular changes in the works, and the first wave of faculty is retiring right about now. But if you can roll with the punches and like to be involved with improving things, it's a great place to be - and there's very little institutional inertia or awful bureaucracy.

Here's the deal: when I was looking at schools (I had 6 to choose from), the advice I got over and over again from vets was to pick the cheapest one I got into. I still think that is solid advice. You'll get the education you give yourself, and NCSU is a well-regarded and affordable school in an enviable location. That said, you have your own set of variables to consider.

ALSO: I can put up 2 people if you are interested in coming out to visit. And since I got lots of help moving (thanks @Foxhunter ;D, you are awesome too 😀), I'd be happy to help others find places to live etc. Let me know via PM if I can help in any way.

Congrats, admitted folks! Keep the faith, everyone else!

Sorry, cloverbug 🙁 The whole process is definitely hard, mentally and emotionally. Chin up!

So sorry, Clover. We're pulling for you, hoping that things turn in your favor with respect to the waitlists. Best of success!

I am in Korea too right now!! just thought that I'd randomly blurt this out... haha

I got my letter this morning - waitlist. I'm waitlisted at 3 places and accepted at one (the only one where they interview... probably not coincidence?)

Just FYI, if you are waitlist OOS, you are still in the top 5% of applicants 🙂 WHOOT!
That is a crazy statistic and something we should all be incredibly proud of!!!! 🙂

Just had a nice phone convo with Dr. Flammer. Found out that NCSU requires 2 weeks of a financial planning course, which is awesome. They brought in the business school for input and have improved the course as well. I hope all schools will eventually add in something like that. The profession really needs it!

I'm right there with ya. 🙁 4 wait lists and 3 rejections. It's been such an emotional roller coaster!!! Hope things work out for you!

That's awesome!! Do we know when this class will be held? Is it first year, first semester? Thanks for the info.

Congrats, Lab Vet! I hope I get to be in your class!
Me too! Can't wait for all the IS folks to hear back. March is SUCH a long wait. I feel for you all. Truly, I do. I've got all my fingers and toes crossed for good news for you all in just a few weeks. So excited to meet fellow members of my Wolfpack 🙂

Out of curiosity, how conservative is NCSU/Raleigh/the surrounding areas?

From personal experience... NC can be pretty conservative... but in the city folks are more open minded. Depends on what youre used to.

NC, like most southern states is more on the conservative side. Raleigh and other cities are the most liberal parts of the state. NCSU's main campus/undergrads seem to be fairly evenly split. The General Assembly has a strong republican majority so the state has been making a lot of budget cuts, especially in education. There have been a number of huge political rallies recently. If you are super conservative, you will find friends. If you are super liberal, you will find friends. If you are homosexual, the state gov isn't very friendly but NCSU welcomes diversity and you will find support at the vet school. If you are into politics, NC is a very interesting place to be. Raleigh is very culturally and religiously diverse.

Good to know, thanks!

Thanks! Well put and to the point, that answers most of my questions about the political/civil rights atmosphere. Diversity and open minds is good news.

Belugal hit the nail on the head. Just to add a tiny bit on that: I think you get a tiny bit more of a conservative feel at NCSU undergrad because it's attracting people from rural parts of the state. I definitely don't know how much that carries over to the vet school, but I do know the vet school has their own GLBT club (I don't know the exact name of the club), so that is encouraging. Also, (not political) the vet school has a few religious clubs as well, such as a Christian one who does a service trip every year. Like Belugal said, Raleigh is one of the liberal cities in NC and Chapel Hill and Durham are other ones and they're not a far drive away, Charlotte is farther but is also liberal. Basically come election time, counties that have or are next to major universities are blue and the others are red.

don't go to Chapel Hell though, it is horrible... :yuck:

Yeah, echoes of the same thing - our class composition runs the gamut from super Southern conservatives to over-the-top liberal atheists, with most people obviously falling in the middle somewhere. The nice thing about Raleigh is that you can kind of pick your social group and there's something for everyone.

It's only when you make your way out of the major cities in NC that you'll really realize you're in the South. I went to my family home (on the coast) a couple months ago wearing a LGBT friendly shirt and got multiple, very dirty glances... made me kind of sad. But all in all, it's a very good city to live in - if I wasn't eternally struck with wanderlust I'd definitely be trying to stay here after graduation.

Are there any current students in the Zoological Medicine Focus area and/or specifically interested in aquatics who would be willing to answer some questions? I can message you individually so it doesn't spam the forum (I have a lot of questions).

I'm zoo med, but interested mainly in small exotics. However, I have a 3rd year friend who is aquatics focused (and specifically marine mammal - doing an externship at Seaworld and all that shenanigan) that I can probably put you in touch with if you'd like. 🙂

Do you think that they will go out on time? *sigh* I think am going to take off work so I can drink either in celebration or depression 😉
They've religiously sent out IS during the ncsu undergrad spring break and I doubt they would change now...plus they said the 15th would be the latest we would hear back...so I think so!

Hopefully celebration:xf:

I'll add that there is quite a bit of diversity at the vet school. We have guys who are under 30 and married fathers of three kids. Lesbians who have adopted children. Whith girls with dreads and visible tattoo. A friend with half her head shaved and the other long, she has full sleeve tattoos. Though there is a conservative feel, I fill like most of even my super conservative classmates are very open, accepting, and loving.

unless you never plan on running a business and are trying to go into academia....

I was referring more to general financial planning like managing your money and such. But sure.

I'm trying to decide whether to leave my key for someone over spring break or to wait and check it myself. I feel like I've had enough waiting but still...
