NCSU cvm c/o 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok, I have no idea why it's not letting you add yourselves since it's set to open. But I am assuming that the two people that just joined are hunterjumper and parrotlove!

Yes! Thanks for creating the group! Though I do not know how to change the settings so that people can add themselves either...

I love how our facebook group is getting bigger 🙂

Me, too, although I wish it was easier to use, lol. It'll be good to get to see the people behind the SDN monikers, though!

Oh My Goodness!

I am so excited! I am going to have to really take down Facebook and SDN if I'm going to get any work done 🙂

I'm looking forward to meeting you all and I love the Facebook group too!

Count me in on the rejected. I got my letter Tuesday. I was sure I was getting in this time. This was my second time applying to NCSU.

I hope they don't get rid of the Alternative Eligibility - I would never get in. During undergrad I had no idea I would be heading to veterinary school years later and my grades weren't the best. My last 45 and my core course GPA are great but without AE I couldn't even apply.

I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever get in applying for a third time under AE.

Congrats to all who got in this year!

Don't give up - it can be done. Maybe broaden your experience - outside of anything animal related.

I'm so glad that our class is starting to come together you guys! It's exciting to see people posting in the facebook group. 🙂

So I posted this question in another thread, too, but since it's more NCSU specific, I'll ask it here:

For the students that choose the avian/exotic emphasis within the small animal focus area, what do most do after graduation? Go into private practice, or pursue further training?

For those that have taken the exotics selectives (I see that there is a fish med one! And a ferret one! I'm in heaven. 😍) can you describe what it was like? Well, really anyone is free to describe what the selectives they've taken have been like; so many of them sound super interesting!

I am a Small Animal Avian and Exotic Interest person, so I'll try to answer your questions. I have no idea what 'most' people with the interest area do, it is a relatively new offering. I don't even know what I'm going to, but both private practice and further training/board certification are on my list of potentials. I don't think any interest area locks you into anything specific after graduation, it is all about what you do with your time in Vet School.

Anyhow, the Selectives are amazing! Selectives I've had include:

-Advanced Fish Medicine: A week long study including two fish surgeries, a necropsy lab, and several other labs including a trip to a commercial fishery.

-Advanced Ferret Medicine: A week long class including spay and neuter and anal sac removal surgeries on retired breeder ferrets, an US lab, and lots of other cool stuff.

-Advanced Reptile Medicine: A week long class including spay/neuter surgeries on iguanas and bearded dragons, an US lab, and other cool stuff.

-Companion Avian Medicine: No surgeries here, but lots of labs including cadaver labs on bandaging, common procedures, and a handling lab on the teaching colony of pigeons and cockatiels.

There are lots of other awesome ones too across the board for all species! I've got Marine Mammal Medicine this semester and I don't know much about it except we spend a week at the beach!

The take home message is Selectives are awesome and you definitely get to learn a lot of really awesome and interesting stuff!

Primate selective = 1 week of disease study, path study, hands on with research primates (preg and general ultrasound, blood tests, etc), lemur colony review, enrichment, zoonosis.

Lab Animal Selective = 1 week of rabbits, rats, birds, fish, regulations, IACUC, behavior, health, current techniques/methods, fresh necropsy, intubation/anesthesia, sampling

Enviromed = 1 week of current local enviro animal research (rattle snakes for us), tracking system/impact affects (water ways, restoration, disease spread), current events (sea turtles, brucellosis, bison, fox beach degradation), role of vet med in environment, climate change, human med, disease, etc. understanding communication differences.

I am getting really excited now 🙂 (as I try not to drool on my keyboard). It is going to be so much fun to take selectives. I am such a nerd. 😀

Wow, all of those sound amazing. 🙂

So i found the facebook group, I'm a new SDN member and was accepted into the NCSU CVM c/o 2015 but i didnt see where we could join the group 🙁 I'd really like to get to know some of my classmates before the semester starts!

I'm excited for the welcome reception April 1, but I'm nervous to go by myself! Anyone else going alone? Also, we don't have anything to be there for on April 1 until 1pm correct? So if I buy a ticket to come in April 1 morning, I wouldn't miss anything?

I'm going alone but I live in Raleigh so you won't be the only one. I don't know of anything going on that morning before things start. Do you have a ride from the airport?

I bought my ticket for the morning of April 1, too. My plane is supposed to arrive at 11:30, so I sure hope I there aren't any flight delays!

I'm bringing my hubby this time around, but back in January when I visited, I was by myself! And I hadn't even been to North Carolina before. I got off the plane, got into my rental car, and started driving around Raleigh. I survived. 🙂 Don't worry, you'll be fine!

So you found the facebook group but can't join? People have been joining, so perhaps you're not seeing the join button? I believe it's on the right hand side.

I don't have a ride from the airport yet. How far is it from the airport to campus? Also, from the list of hotels on the tentative schedule any suggestions? I know there was some discussion earlier about the Ramada...

I'm not a student at state (yet!) but we always stay at the Ramada at horse shows. It is RIGHT next to the vet school and is a really really nice hotel. No bed bugs 🙂 It's reasonably priced, very clean, etc.
I'm so excited for everyone 😀

Thanks! I'm thinking maybe I should just rent a car so I have something to do on Saturday instead of being stuck in the hotel! At least I'll be able to drive around and see the area.

If you need a ride let me know =) The airport is about 15 minutes from campus, not too bad.

Awesome! Thanks SO much! But I decided to rent a car after all so that I can drive around Saturday before my evening flight and see the area. I've never been there before so it'll be nice to do some site seeing although I'm not sure what to see! Any suggestions? I also would like to look at some areas around the school so that once I make a decision I can know what area I want to look for housing in.

I'm excited to meet everyone! I'm hoping this visit will help me make a decision finally!

Raleigh is a very small city and relatively easy to drive in, even with all the one way streets. My first time driving the perimeter road totally threw me off. I'm used to I-465 around Indy, and when I discovered that I had gone the wrong direction on I-440, I settled in for a nice long drive around the city. I ended up bypassing the exit I needed, and found myself back where I started.

I have noticed one thing about people moving to NC. If you are from out west - basically KS onward, you might feel a little closed in. NC has some very dense vegetation and you aren't going to be able to see for miles around you. I've known of a few wives who returned to the Great Plains while their husbands did their time at Bragg because of this.

Well, I'm from TX, and I actually loved the vegetation, hehe. This is going to sound weird to people who live in Raleigh, but there are so many trees there compared to where I've lived, and trees > urban sprawl. One of the things I kept telling my hubby about when I came back from my visit was "wow, there are actually trees there..." Haha. I know, it makes me sounds like a awe-struck tourist, but visit downtown Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio, and you'll know why I'm so excited.

I'll be moving to Raleigh sometime in June, and I hope to spend some time enjoying and exploring outdoors before we have to hunker down for classes. 🙂

Would any more IS people be willing to post in the "Successful Applicant Stats" thread? I am going to be talking to a few pre-vet people at my college soon about the application process, and I'd love to have more acceptance examples to show them what they should aim for.

Mine is in there, but I don't recommend that route.

Would an OOS for NCSU be helpful, too? I've been debating about putting my stats up there, because I'm not sure it would help people.

I would think that any additional information samples would be helpful. Provides a better view of who gets in and gives folks something to aim at. In my case, they can see that all is not lost if your GPA went to hell, as long as you get really lucky, a war starts, and you make the right decisions during it. 😀

Don't forget about this powerpoint on the CVM's website:
http://www.cvm.ncsu.edu/studentservices/admissions-faq.html

It has all the range and averages of GRE, GPA, etc. for both IS and OOS. Also, I remember from when I went to one of the information sessions last summer that they said most of their accepted applicants have >2000 hours (but I didn't, so it varies) and good experience (aka - >100 hours) in at least 3 different fields. They also said that if you have a below average GPA/GRE, you need to make up for it with experience.

I don't have the notebook with me that I took notes in, but I will find it later and post everything else they said at that info session.

I have seen that Powerpoint 🙂

Thank you for the info. Anything else you wrote down from that session would be greatly appreciated 👍

Hi all!
I'm going to be part of the c/o 2015 at NCSU (YAY!!!), and I am looking for places to live near Raleigh, but not actually in Raleigh. I currently live in Chapel Hill, and my roommate works at UNC, so we're trying to find a place that is between Raleigh and Chapel Hill. I've looked at the listings for Cary and Morrisville, and I was wondering if anyone was in a similar situation and could give me any recommendations about apartment complexes/areas to look into.

Thanks!

Hey Everyone, so I was wondering what kinds of opportunities are available to go abroad - mission trip or things of that nature. I know its not really 'study abroad,' but really anything with travel/different counties I'm interested in. Do people/groups do anything for the Christmas break or summer in that manner? Any info would be great!

Anyone know what the dress code is for the reception on Friday? Given the uniform of the day, I'm pretty sure I'll be over dressed. If it's not a formal affair - suits and what not, I'm going to need to change. I was going to ride my bike, but it looks like the weather isn't going to cooperate.

Casual! You'll be meeting with students, and we'll be in jeans and t-shirts. Dress comfortably and bring an extra layer because some rooms are COLD.

There will also be a chance to meet with professors at 4pm. I still would consider it completely casual but I just figured I would mention that part as well.

Will we get to tour the new teaching hospital? It was still under construction when I visited in January.

'fraid not. Still under construction until its expected opening in May so it should be ready for seeing when you come in August!

Do any of you use Macs? How have your experience been using them in vet school?

I've always been a PC person, but my hubby has a Mac which I love. I am in need of getting a portable and light computer to bring to school, and am wondering if maybe Macs are the better way to go for me. I could get a netbook (since it's also small and light), but I'm wondering if the trade-off in performance is worth it. For more money, I could get a much better performing Mac, even if it does run Office in kind of an annoying format (one of my main gripes with Macs). Thoughts?

I don't use a Mac - so I'm not the best person for answering this BUT....

I used to hate Macs because of my roommates' issues with her Mac in undergrad. She always had to borrow my PC to do her assignments because her Mac wouldn't work with a lot of the school's programs. Since starting vet school, though, I'm actually considering getting a Mac as my next laptop (whenever it is that I'll need a new one and can afford it). A lot of people have them and they don't seem to cause anyone any problems, that I know of.

I don't think either computer is "better" for vet school use, so it comes down to preference. Me, I think it's ridiculous to pay that much for a laptop when you can get a great, solid PC for 1/4 of the price. Some people swear by Macs, but for what you'll be doing in vet school (internet, word-processing, Power Point)? Not worth it IMHO unless you're a die-hard Apple fan (with a good deal of extra cash).

Thanks for the feedback!

To me, a Mac is an expensive, restrictive computer. The biggest hang up - no Flash. Steve Jobs has a personal issue with the developer of Flash and won't let it run on "his" computers. Networking is funny and most network guys won't be able to help you sort out problems, unless they really like you. MS has the biggest market share and a proven track record across the board. Win7 is the best MS OS I've seen, as it should be, though Vista was a step backward. If you are looking at getting something with more than 4 GB RAM, get a 64-bit OS. My Lenovo tablet is getting 8GB shortly after it arrives. Cheaper to DIY it than have the factory add it.
