NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
can someone tell me what the deposit schedule is like please? is it really 950 dollars by december 15th and then another grand by march? i was hoping for only a couple hundred in december. that would be a lot more fair.

All that information will be in the packet they send you. I don't know off the top of my head. If you don't have the cash they may be able to work with you a bit, but I'm not sure considering I THINK you can use credit card.

Most schools want you to invest a significant chunk. Otherwise you could just throw in deposits at several schools. It makes you actually decide whether that is your top choice or near the top.

Kind of funny that about 20 of us will know each other before we even start.

Haha. I met my best friend here at school on SDN. This thing is pretty awesome for that sort of thing 🙂

I'm assuming I'll be there unless called off the waitlist at FSU.

You liked FSU? Nova beat it hands down for me.

Yea. I like the smaller class, lower tuition, and the proximity to my 70 yearold father with a crappy heart. I also like the openness of the 4th year rotations, which is something that makes me very uneasy with NSU. I enjoy an undergrad affiliation, but I am not as much for attending classes and studying at a building with a student population larger than my high school. Also, trivial things like the little apartments and no dress code are nice along with intending to stay in north florida......and I don't really care about OMM that much. It is more of a novelty thing with me.

All that being said, I'd be perfectly content at NSU. I think they'd both get me where I want to go. Family support goes a long way, as does the fact it is dirt cheap for me to live here. I live in a house with 3 others that is about 1200 a month. Brand new. Closed in yard, washer/dryer, stainless appliances, fireplace, etc. I'm right next to FOMA headquarters as well, if you want me to drop off a note to them for anything. 😉

I got the provision acceptance as well! Are we positive it means we're in? I called but no one answered (as it is 8am 🙂)!

Congrats!! and yes, we're all accepted, i confirmed it with Sarah Baksh!!

A provisional acceptance just means that you have to fulfill all of the requirements and not go on complete autopilot till school starts. If you haven't received your degree yet, it is usually conditional on that.

Really? I can't drop out of school and watch TV all day now?

Lol, when I was told on the phone that "provisional" meant they needed my final transcripts, I was like "Oh." I totally thought that they were going to tell me I needed to take another class or that I needed to get a 4.0 this semester.

Yeah Sarah said the acceptance is provisional until you pay your deposit.

Well obviously payment is part of it as well. But I'm pretty sure you can't just quit doing stuff now either. 😉

sooo...for the dress code, are hoodies allowed over our scrubs? also, are hats allowed?? i really hate dress codes. love everything else about the school.

Along those lines, are you allowed to roll up one of the scrub pant legs?

Hats might be pushing it, but I've seen sweatshirts every time I've gone there. Might as well get used to some form of dress code. Its a professional school, so you should prepare yourself to be professional once in a while!

Now that i'm accepted I can start growing my hair again. I'll be the guy in the Nova scrubs wit the cornrows

Do you know what scrubs colors we're allowed to wear? Is it just the ceil blue? Or can we wear assorted shades of blue?

I think M1/M2 etc have each have different colors, and then each professional school has separate colors and separate colors for each of their years as well. At least I know for a fact that is how it works in their dental school.

I tried searching for it, but all I could come up with is that first year dental students wear forest green. Google hasn't been much help on this.

Well I have seen both M1s and M2s in the light blue I believe. I know they have lots of different colored scrubs around the HPD but each color seems to be associated with a different career path.

for people getting interviews over the last few weeks how long was after you applied?
i havent heard a peep from nova and nobody ever answers there phones at the admissions office...

I got an interview invite about a month ago, I submitted my secondary 1st week of august.

How do you check your status online?

log into webstar, click on your application term link, then in the lower right hand corner you will see status

just a note...they aren't really good with updating this page...I was accepted back in september and mine still isn't updated

Was anyone else really turned off by their application process? This has to be the most disorganized school I have applied to.

The Osteopathic MSAR says they require a physician letter in addition to 3 academic letters, yet Nova's PDF literature says they want an osteopathic letter. And where do we send them exactly? Just the Office of Admissions?

The secondary was a redundant joke, but whatev. Hopefully the admissions dept is not reflective of the rest of the school.

All the DO students have Ceil blue. 🙂 The Dentites (as several people have taken to calling them) change colors from year to year. Physical therapy has their own color so does pharmacy, nursing, OD and...well yah, everybody has a diff. color. You can wear whatever scrubs you want to anatomy lab (I think? I'm pretty sure).

Hoodies are allowed. I sport my "Rainbow Brite" one nearly every day. The dress code isn't STRICT just dont' be stupid. I mean honestly, is a pair of scrubs THAT big a deal?

Where dress code IS a big deal is for OPP lab. Shorts, shirt and a sports bra for women. Shoes and socks (not as big a deal as the shorts and sports bra, but still). Also, for your SPE (simulated patient encounters) you MUST dress professionaly (white coat and all). Also for the OPP exam they make it a real point of telling you that if you aren't in dress code (scrubs or business casual) you can't take the exam.

I'm pretty sure that dress code says we have to have our white coats at all times (except for test days)...but I've yet to see anyoen really religiously follow that rule.

I totally get the whole "not likeing dress code" thing. Dress code was a HUGE turn off for me at LECOM but nova's is a lot different (the being allowed to wear scrubs thing is a HUGE plusl).

The NSU dress code doesn't really bother me that much (mostly because we're allowed to wear scrubs). But I do fail to see how wearing scrub pants and a hoodie is more "professional" than wearing jeans and an oxford or something along those lines. But whatever. I take it you can wear either tennis shoes, clogs, or crocs with the scrubs?

Guess I need to invest in some ceil blue scrubs! And I suppose if I do end up at NSU I don't really need to buy any more sweaters, do I?

I guess the rational is that you can take the hoodie off and*bam* you're "professional"?

HA. FL isn't really the place to worry about sweaters. But the lecture halls do get a bit chilly (read: FREEZING).

I always wear sneakers with my scrubs (and honestly, 1/2 the time with my dress clothes, b/c I have a bad back). I've seen people wearing crocs, I don't know the policy on them though.

I guess all of those years of stealing scrubs won't pay off.

According to policy, crocs are not part of dress code especially in the labs.

Sweatshirts are particularly allowed because it gets cold in in some classroom settings. White coats are part of dress code and as indicated above, as long as you don't stretch the rules and make anyone angry, your class should be fine.

There is a difference in policy between your M1 and M2 year.

I got the interview invite today!
I need to call them yet. Does any one know when they have open slots?

HOD brings up a REALLY important point (that you should note for WHATEVER school you attend). Open toed shoes are NOT part of dress code. I see people wear them to class (if I'm not wearing sneakers, I normally wear sandals so I'm guilty of this too). Like HOD said, so long as you aren't obnoxious and don't piss people off you should be OK.

Where this is REALLY important is lab I should also mention that wearing slacks/shorts/jeans/t-shirts into lab is a no-no.

You *will* get booted out of lab if certain teachers catch you w/o proper lab attire.

I don't know why you'd want to wear your jeans to lab anyway! I mean, honestly, the smell isn't that bad but still! ew.

No flip flops in FL? Good luck enforcing that rule! At least, in pre-clinical years when people are just sitting in a lecture hall (anatomy lab, however, is another story).

It's not really all that important (hardly a make or break factor for me) but is this dress code actually posted online anywhere? The student handbook has nothing but generic "students have to dress professionally" type stuff in it.

Frankly, my main concern right now is finding shoes that I can stand in for long hours. I've got weak knees so good arch support is crucial, yet very hard to find (in cute shoes, at least). 🙁

I'm sure it's SOMEWHERE online...I"m not sure where though. Maybe HOD knows? 🙂

As for shoes that you can stand in for long hours, I can't speak for years 2,3 and 4, but for year 1, it's not really much of an issue. There are stools in the anatomy lab that you can sit on and you sit in histology lab.

God. being sick sucks. I'm going back to bed.

I'd do a search with emphasis in the surgical and clinical forums. They talk about shoes that are comfortable a lot there. My florida-ness shines through. I despise shoes with a passion and generally keep it at sandals nearly all year. Heck, many times I just go barefoot and leave flipflops in my car for stuff around town.

I used to sell cars and we were on our feet running around for 10-12hours a day. Almost all the sales people wore New Balance sneakers, they are pretty comfortable over long periods of standing/walking.

Yes, but they don't do well with the professional look. I do like new balance though. I recommend them if you have wide feet like me. New balance shoes are fairly priced and about the only shoe I can find in my size it seems.

I didn't mean to start a discussion on shoes! Oops!

I have been looking around the internet, though, trying to find stuff I like because I know it will take a while. I'm picky like that. I had a friend in college who lived in Danskos, maybe I'll try out those and see if they're as awesome as people claim.

I am sad that I will have to give up my beloved rainbow sandals. Bummer. Guess I have to grow up sometime and graduate to adult shoes.

Yes, the articles of clothing are specified somewhere. It's business casual attire and/or scrubs. The scrubs clause is not written specifically but its an unspoken law.

Each and every student will have to sign a code of conduct agreement. Evaluate whether you like dress code and attendence.

About open-toed shoes, why would you wear them to lab where you're dissecting. Do you want a piece of a liver to touch your bare foot or have a an accident and have the scalpel fall on your foot. No thanks. We just finished GI. I have enough holes.

It's really not that bad. Be reasonable, be professional.

Ew! I've had to wear closed toed shoes for my research for years (similar reasoning, with more emphasis on nasty chemicals) so really it's not a big deal. If it bothers me so much I could keep flip flops in my car and change when I leave the building.

The attendance policy doesn't strike me as too bad. I never skipped classes in college so I got used to it. Of course, if you have to attend and class and so don't want to be there, you could always just sit in the back and read another classes' notes. I doubt the prof would notice.

I submitted my secondary the first week of October. Is this going to be really late in the cycle, as I have not heard anything from them yet?? Also, do they show a strong preference to Floridians/southerners?? Thanks.

I do think they show a preference to floridians, but a "strong" preference is debatable. You're still in the game. There are people in the current class that interviewed A LOT later in the game and got in.

I got into CCOM and will be interviewing at NOVA soon. I'd much rather be in the Florida area but I place heavy weight on reputation and not limiting myself with respect to any and all specialties.

So, I know CCOM has a rich history and a respected name, great rotations, etc. My question is, if I get accepted to NOVA, would I be limiting myself at all by choosing to go there?

Rock on.

Pet lecture peeves: People swiping in and walking out
People walking in late through the front doors

Seriously. It's so freakin' rude. and the professors DO notice and it DOES bother them.

whats peoples thoughts on the malpractice incident rates/insurance in florida??

i heard from a resident a couple days ago that Florida is one of the worst in the country with california being one of the best.... anyone else know anything on the subject...

expensive. There is a reason we moved to the midwest from south florida. I really highly doubt that california is one of the best. If it were anywhere, I imagine it'd be some low populated state that doesn't have a history of taking every wrong result to litigation.

singin, I never condone actually doing it during the class or walking in through the front door during lectures, but I've heard from people the last three years that many do and it is always an option. 😉 Besides that, i've heard of a few people just giving their card to a friend for the day. I know it bothers them, but they are victims of the rules set up by the school and not necessarily the students who don't learn from lectures. I don't really blame either party, but it is irritating to happen when someone is speaking.

You are allowed to miss up to 30% of your classes for whatever reason you want. In my honest opinion, swiping in and leaving is dishonest. Swiping in for someone else is even worse. Would you do the same if you were on rounds? I would certainly hope not. The rules are relaxed at the moment.

There will be professors who take such actions are being disrespectful (swiping in and leaving, not being in dress code, or poor attendance) and will 'punish' the class by submitting more difficult test questions. Just the heads up.

It used to be 50/50, they're gradually accepting more out of state individuals with every year.

You are answering your own Q. Go to CCOM.

I think my man Dr. Will Kirby would argue that NOVA is the s**t
