NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i feel the same way...i just paid my acceptance and am feeling the hit on my checking account lol....is anyone here from the 11/18 interview date and has anyone interviewed at LECOM-E I have an interview there and was wondering how it was there...thanks!

I haven't, but I can honestly say it is hard to find the will to be serious about interviewing at other places when you pay the deposit. I interviewed at LMU-DCOM and it felt more like a trip to check out the school than anything else. It can kind of skew your opinion a bit.

I interviewed at LECOM-Erie and it was my second choice once I saw NSU. PM me if you have questions.

Hey after you get the official acceptance packet you are supposed to send back a form stating that you will be attending NSU. Does that have to go back by certified mail as well or it doesn't matter?

Also, I interviewed at LECOM0-Erie...I didn't like it. We can leave it at that I think. If anyone else likes it though I will be denying acceptance there so your chances will be slightly raised.

I sent it back priority mail because I had a ton of issues with my post office up here and I wanted the tracking number since I paid with a check and yes you need to send the sheet in with it

I sent it overnight, signature confirmed in order to meet the deadline (three days after I received the package... thanks for the time cushion, NSU). After several phone calls, to suggest that it had been received by a neighbor. I had an acceptance of 11/23 and the letter was posted 12/09, received 12/19 with a due date of 12/23.

I would have sent it certified, signature confirmed, and with a return receipt in the very least. Thus far, my experience with NSU's admissions office has been lackluster; I plan on taking every precaution available to get the blame away from my end. YMMV, of course:xf:.

If I pay the fee online via credit card, I probably would not need to send the acceptance forms via certified mail or registered mail, right?? Once the fee is paid, I doubt I'd lose my spot if the forms somehow got lost before the due date (although I still have 16 days).

Yeah I just paid my deposit to Nova, but I also received an interview to LECOM-Erie for February. I am not sure what to do, I have heard a lot of bad things about LECOM and I really liked Nova. I am not sure if it is worth it to spend the money to go out to the interview after I have already paid my deposit to Nova. The rules at LECOM-Erie really have discouraged me from even going to the interview. I have to confirm or deny my interview by Wednesday so I should make up my mind soon...

Sounds like you have made up your mind. Just trust your instincts...you will get a great education if you enjoy where you are and feel like you can work with the other people going to school with you! And, keep in mind the reasons you like NSU....Erie is a smaller town, lower cost of living, not part of a big undergrad...etc, etc. I liked Erie a lot but went with Nova for the wide variety of rotations and the bigger metropolitan environment. If you want to know more about Erie email me or IM me at knittingDO on AIM.

Yeah you're right I think I have too. Its just closing that other door is hard for me.

Oh I totally understand. It was hard for me to write the rejection emails to the other schools just because its a weird thought...rejecting an acceptance to medical school!

I pray that I will have that same problem .....

I really want a UMDNJ interview.

But if I don't get one, Nova's a-ok.

I'm cancelling DMU. I checked a map and it's right below Minnesota. WTF.

I wanted a UMDNJ interview too. I called and spoke with someone there and was basically told that I wasn't getting one 🙂() Oh well. I am not going to let it rain on my parade. It may be helpful to call and speak with someone to find out if you are in the running for one. If you need a # or contact person, I could dig one up for you.

I guess I'll call again. Bastards!

I called and got a "We offer interviews through till April so be patient".

I didn't know how to take that.

Are you all interested in the UMDNJ DO program or the MD program?

I'm assuming for everyone that we're talking about the DO.

I think I am cancelling my DMU interview as well. Nova is the way to go

Great, so it gets to be 0 instead of -10

Here are my major application points and my cirumstances. I was a Micro-Molecular Biology at UCF. I had a 3.37 cum GPA, science of 3.2 but my upper division electives was 3.6 (no idea why I got better grades in my harder sciences classes). I got a 27Q V10 P8 B9. I only have decent numbers so I am counting on my ECs to get me in.

I was on the Men's Varisty Crew team at UCF for 3 1/2 years 28+/week. I was an anatomy TA for 1.5 years at 20+/week. I shadowed a neurosurgeon for a semester internship 4hrs/week. I got in with a neurologist partner of his for 1 month. Both were MDs. I have been shadowing a D.O. at Suncoast Medical now since 2006 on holidays and weekends. Now that I graduated (Aug) I pull a shift of 12 hours with him every week. I volunteered at the ICU at Orlando Regional during a summer.

Now heres the problem. I just recieved a rejection form Midwestern CCOM and was put on hold at DMU (they wont look at it till april and then only if there are some spots left). Fortunately those are not my main choices..LECOM and NSU are.I am really worried that there is something majorly wrong with my application for 2 schools to rejected me so soon. I thought I had a very strong app.

I would appreciate any feedback if anyone notices any weaknesses. What else can I do right now to strengthen my app?

I should probably let you know my story and maybe it will guide you on finding something out. Ok, so I have pretty similiar #'s to you and very decent ECs as well. Last year, I applied to 6 MD and 6 DO (didn't really know as much about DO...had I, I would have only applied to DO). I am not that competitive for MD I know, but none of the DO schools would touch me. I had plenty of MD shadow experience and some DO shadow experience as well. I had 3 letters of recommendation from MDs but none from a DO. Here's the other thing....my pre-med advisor emailed me about March and asked "Why did you reject an acceptance from CCOM?" I had recieved a pre-interview rejection from them in January. They had listed me, accidentally, on the primary AACOMAS app as "Offered acceptance, denied matriculation" instead of rejected or whatever. It did not get fixed until May and then I received an interview invitation from Touro NY.

In talking with my advisor, she really does think this significantly hurt my chances last year. I did get a DO LOR, but other than that, absolutely nothing changed about me this cycle. This cycle, I applied to 11 DO schools and got interview invitations (all by mid-October) to 10 of them.

Moral of this loooong story (sorry about that)? Check everywhere and make sure all of your ducks are in a row. Call an advisor (if you can) and ask what they see your status as. I even called schools last year and asked them what exactly the problem with my application was. Nothing wrong with that and if you do it early enough in the cycle, then you may be able to affect things. Oh, and get a DO LOR if you don't already have one. Good luck and call, call, call!!

Extremely stupid question here but urgent since I am sending out my forms this morning...

I am assuming I do NOT need to fill out the Florida Residency Application, since I am not a Florida resident, correct?? Or do all applicants need to fill it out anyway, even if not applying for residency status??? Help please.. Thanks!!

I didn't fill any of that out. I don't think its necessary.

Couple quick notes:

-Like mentioned earlier, double check your application for mistakes
-Your experiences and shadowing seem really good. Strong point. Talk about your exposure in the field during interviews.
-A 25 is not the highest of scores. Its slightly below average (not much) and with your GPA being slightly below average (again not much) that doesnt help either. Neither are low enough to keep you out by any means though.
-There is NO mens varsity crew team at UCF. There is only a Club team which is not paid for by UCF Athletics so its still only considered "Club" not "Varsity" even if you have a JV/V team.
-Wondering how you managed 28 hours per week of crew, 20 hours a week as a TA, full time classes, shadowing, and whatever else you do. Not calling you out, but those numbers seem a bit exaggerated...
-The best news I can offer you is this: I was rejected from CCOM and put on hold at DMU, but I got accepted to your other favorites (NSU and both LECOM's). So I think there's hope. Once you get an interview you'll be golden I think. If you want my personal experiences and interview tips from them just PM me.

Linkdo, no kididng they seem exaggerated. I thought I was going to die my senior year. My last semester I had to drop crew becuase there was no way in hell I could fit in shadowing. My typical day started at 8-12 anatom lab. 12-4:30 classes and then ran home to get to practice from 5 to 9:00pm. Then I studied and slept maybe 4 hrs. Thats what I did for about 3/4 a year. My last semester I had to drop crew becuase there was no way in hell to fit it in. So I picked up more hours in lab and started shadowing and volunteering more. I am discouraged that it looks exaggerated. I had to bust my ass to make it work, i was miserable, never want re-live senior year again, and gained 20 lbs from only having the time to eat fast food 3+ times a day.

Forgot to include the hours I had to put in over weekends in the lab making lecture + lab tests and setting the lab up for the coming week. Time varied but usally 2-4. Then we had sunday practice for 4-6 hours.

Any ideas on how to present that information in a more reasonable way so it doesn't come off fudged?

P.S. Whats this " whatever else you do?"

Linkdo, not trying to misrepresent myself as an athlete but we were referred to as the Varisty team. I figured it would look even better that we were a club team because we had to fundraise all the money to support the team ourselves. From working football games, soccer games, etc You name it, we had to do it.

I figured it would show more dedication, becuase not only did we have to put in the same hours as a scholarship athelte but everything was out of pocket or we fundraised for it. We wanted to compete that bad.

The problem with club sports is that they don't know or see that. An athlete with a scholarship has the scholarship to show they were really doing that stuff. I did club tennis for a bit and honestly did jack except play tennis for a few hours a day. We each bought about 10 cans of balls, paid for our own strings and rackets, and like 200 bucks a semester to help with travel...but that was it. It wasn't a big deal. I'm not saying yours is like that, but with so much variation between commitment levels they tend to take a middle ground.

I know that playing tennis "for a few hours a day" sounds like a lot, but relative to my life where I was driving several hours a day for pro lessons and indoor courts during the winter, attending all day camps and balancing indoor drumline, swimteam, football, and whatever I was involved in at the time...it was nothing but casual fun.

Gimme a break, no adcom is going to care about club vs. scholarship sports. The point of putting sports on your app is to show you're well rounded. It only matters beyond that if you:
1. are Michael Phelps
2. or your interviewer also rowed crew / played tennis, and chooses to discuss it in lieu of other questions, and chooses to judge your sports experience. In which case it's still highly unlikely to affect your admission.

Hello everyone,

I have recently got accepted to NSU and now I'm trying to fill out the packet they sent in mail with regard the FL residency and my accepting acknowledgment of their acceptance offer. However, on both papers, they are asking for NSU student ID number that starts with letter "N". I don't have a NSU ID number. I only have the login to Webstar. Can you guys help me. did you guys leave that part blank?

thank you very much

How quick does NSU make a decision on your file after an interview? Do the review files every week or something like that?

did you use ucf for your secondaries? some other chick from our class got into NSU also.....

I think saying "no adcom" is a bit of a stretch. Many maybe, but I was in the fencing club team for a bit too. Can I fence? Hell no....Now, our varsity fencing team won the NCAA national title 5 times in a row. That'd be a heck of a slip up. I went to one of the largest universities in the country. There is a HUGE difference between club and varsity with commitment level. It is the same as saying there is no difference in biology/physics for non-science majors versus science majors. It is also misrepresenting yourself if you imply you are one rather than the other. We had two degrees at my college that had a few core classes. One was drastically more difficult than the other, although they both apply for similar positions upon graduation. (The harder one usually took priority since the big companies DID care and DID know) You wouldn't say you got the harder degree because of a couple of similarities would you?

I'd venture to guess that misrepresenting yourself would factor into a decision. Nearly every interview I have gone on has only focused on medicine for about 5 minutes of the interview. The rest is "Tell me about stained glass", "You play guitar and drums? How did that work?", "Talk about your powerlifting", "Talk about your mentoring". I had one guy try testing me a bit to make sure I wasn't just putting things down to look better off than I really was.

I'm not talking about misrepresentation - that's a bad idea, period. I'm talking about keeping the importance of extra-curricular activities in perspective. By which I mean keeping the unimportance of the specifics of them in perspective. Have some? Great. Interesting enough to draw questions in an interview? Great. Can you speak intelligently about your participation? Great. Beyond that? BFD.

That said, my Stanford MD/PhD surgeon adcom housemate always reminds me that med school admissions are an American Idol crapshoot where having ultimate frisbee on your app can be the thing that gets you in or keeps you out. Maybe the eyeballs belong to an enthusiast, or maybe they belong to somebody who got recently dumped by an enthusiast.

Edit: my actual point is that somebody who thinks they can gain something by claiming varsity vs. club is delusional about the importance of varsity vs. club.

Does anyone know when financial aid information comes? We are trying to start managing the finances around being in school. I can't find what the COA is for NSU either. Do any of the current students have any opinions on how much to take out or thoughts on the accuracy of COA? I will be coming with an SO so I believe that will cut down on the loans I will have to take since he will be working full time. Thanks for your help and happy New Years to everyone!!

Your NSU ID number is at the bottom of both the acceptance letter from the dean and the bottom of the letter saying you need to submit your transcripts i wanna say its the bottom right corner. If you still have any trouble PM me.

I interviewed on the 12/16 and found out on 12/22 but I think that was an exception because we were the last group for before the holidays. They told us when the adcom was meeting so I dont know if they told you that when you interviewed or if you even interviewed. Let me know if you wanna know more

I called the admissions office about that and they said the default is out of state so if you dont fill it out you will be considered out of state so just toss it.

Its very true that the admissions process is a crapshoot. But there are huge differences in the amount of commitment involved in extra curriculars. Like someone said, many times club vs varsity is very different. Same idea as if someone says they have volunteered at an urgent care center for three years: is that once a week or once every other month? I've heard people on SDN fudge their numbers and hours and extracurriculars all the time. Is that unethical and immoral in a profession like medicine... absolutely! But it happens all the time.

Mordhin - thats great that you got through all those things. talk about them in interviews and say how it helped you to stay organized and use your time efficiently.

To say that your something like sport experiences dont matter in your admissions process is wrong. I know that it has been a big part of mine. IT showed that I was well-rounded and much much more. All of my interviews have been briefly about the medicine, and more about my life and other passions.

mkg87 - i heard in a week and a half. status online changed first then an email a couple days later and a packet in the mail a few days after that.

I think it makes a difference how much life experiences you have had. i.e, how old you are, what kinda' jobs you held etc. I don't have much in terms of ECs except 250 hrs. at the hospital and a few other activities but no one pestered me about it during the interviews. It is one thing for a 23 yr. old to not have ECs, another for an older person. A person with a demanding computer engineering job and / or family would have very little time to serve the community even if she or he wanted to. But, adcoms seem to understand this.

They told us on the tour that they are taped and you can refer back to them whenever.

Deepa100 & GlobeMedder, thanks for the info, i am going there this monday. I can't wait to leave cold NY and go to the warm FL. :]
