NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know there can't be a direct answer for this question, but I was wondering if you are alt or waitlisted in a previous cycle and you make some positive changes to your application are you judged any differently than a new applicant with similar or same stats that didn't apply there last year?

so is it safe to say no one has received an interview yet?

Question: Just to summarize... are you listing or not listing all your MD and DO schools.... and if you are... than are you listing the ones you applied for or just the ones that you actually filled and sent secondaries to?///???

I'm really unnerved about his MD DO school listing thing...... 🙁

I listed every single school I applied to.

I listed all 45 of them, since it wasn't an optional question.

List them all. It will not hurt.

You're viewed as a whole new applicant, though they will want to know what you have changed since your previous application and/or why you are applying to NSUCOM once again, both topics which can be addressed in your application.

Darn you hurricane Fay!!! Few day delay with the invites I bet

Hurricanes suck. Sent out my Signature page Friday now the Hurricane is gonna blow it away before admissions gets it.

Hahaha I'm a cane👍

You have to call if you want to know if your complete because thats what I did. Its not going to show on web star. I spoke to them on friday and they told me there system was down and that they were going to get it back up on monday. But now you got the storm in town and all the schools are closed down here including nova so who knows when were going to hear from them.

whoa, that's scary! but i heard that it was a close call, not really a hurricane...so everything's okay down there?

thanks for the info!!

Yeah just a tropical storm, everything is fine.

What would happen if a medial school were to be destroyed by a hurricane or some other natural disaster? How would they go about letting the students finish the year? Would they send you out to other med schools or something or just move the class to another area?

That would be what happened at Tulane. Schools all over the country absorbed Tulane's students - undergrads, med students, law students etc. In a number of cases, the new hosts allowed clean transfers, not just temporary arrangements.

It'd take a monster hurricane to wipe off NSU. It is a drastically different situation there than New Orleans. One thing, you don't have to worry about a levy breaking really. Aside from that, all the new buildings are built with pretty stringent standards. Barring a direct hit from a cat 5, it isn't something I'd really even think about. Even then, the buildings are all made with crazy anchoring and out of cinder block. They learned their lesson after hurricane andrew.

For all those interested:

I just called and talked with a counselor about my MCAT score.
Turns out I will be auto-rejected without a retake of my MCAT.
They require at least a "7" in each section.

Baloney. I got an interview at NSU in 2006 and now again in 2008 with a 6 in PS (Overall 26N, 11VR, 9 BS, 6 PS). Plus, for the record, I was accepted to two schools for 2007 matriculation despite this one crappy score. (I didn't go at the time because of family issues.) So, whoever told you that is definitely mistaken. Maybe an AVERAGE of "7" (total > 21) in each section is required?

Damn neither of the two schools let you defer for family issues? that's cold. What two schools were they, if you don't mind me asking?

hey guys and girls---

ill let you guys in on a little secret...when I interviewed at NOVA this past year, the other applicants and I had one very important thing in common...

We called Dev in admissions.....asked about the status/completeness of our files....and he was like " well umm when can u come down for an interview?"

not joking....we didnt even press the guy, we were simply seeing if all documents, lor's, mcats etc were in.....id say about 50% of the people i interviewed with were in this situation.

good luck
wow!

Finally someone who feels my pain. I was complete since Aug 6, what about you? If you hear anything from them feel free to post here and ill do the same.

I am in the same boat with you guys. I have to say that I'm becoming a little dissapointed with their communications above anything else. Ahhh well what can we do...

I just assumed I never heard back because of my second mcat. We'll find out now. I'd like to get an interview there. Save myself some cash. Every interview in Florida is about 1000 less I'll need to spend.

I'm assuming I'm in the same boat. However I'm too busy studying to even submit my secondary. Since this one isn't too bad, maybe I'll make an exception and take a break and send them my secondary. Their cut off is 23 though, so if your fist MCAT isn't a 23 they won't review you yet.

it will take you 15 minutes at the most. No essays. Just like an extended aacomas application that wants what MD schools you applied to as well.

We had school closed on Tuesday and the M1s just arrived here a few weeks ago, so things are slow at the moment Do not worry, the admissions office will pick up soon enough. Best of luck on your interviews.

thanks, I think I'll submit this weekend. Will they even look at it if I say i'm retaking the MCAT?

haha... i haven't even heard about last year yet... never got a letter or email or call saying i was rejected lol yet i still applied again this year... so don't worry for all those waiting it takes a while to get ahold of them and for them to get back to you

hi fellow nova-waiters-
i called them this morning to confirm my interview date, and was told that the official interview invite packets would be sent out later this week. i'm not sure if this means by mail or email but just to let you guys know, they're getting their stuff together.
i got my interview by calling them and asking about my app status three weeks in a row. the third time (and i'm pretty sure it was just to get me to stop calling:laugh:) they gave me an interview date.

You actually got them to answer the phone on three consecutive weeks??!!?!?! That's unheard of...

just submitted my application. Its the first DO school i submitted.. fingers crossed for an interview invite : )

hey all! i'm using interfolio for my letters, but NSU has an evaluation form .... can i do without and just have the LOR sent in w/o the form? thanks!

I'm pretty sure the evaluation forms are an optional guideline....I sent my committee packet and DO letters through interfolio and did not use their eval forms 👍

That's what I'm going to do. Also, we can pay by credit card on-line, right?

I did not fill out any official form or send it to an evaluator and got an interview offer. Very nice front office it seemed.

I also paid with credit card.

If any of you are going to be there on 9/11, I'll see you there

For those who have scheduled interviews - do you know how long the day goes? I'd like to wrap this trip in with my LECOM interview but need to know the details of the day. Thanks

How would you arrange to travel between the two places? I'm hoping to be offered interviews at both and do the same thing. How far apart are they?

What do you mean? It is scheduled to be a pretty standard day.

There is about a 4 hour difference between. If you can schedule to do one then drive to the other then it isn't an issue. You run into issues of scheduling two different schools on the same time span though. Which can be difficult.

Do you guys know if Nova's secondary application is different than their online application that we do via their WebStar system?

I ask this because I was able to do the WebStar Application before I even submit my AACOMAS application.

Are they two different things that are required?

Thank you

huh? I don't get what you're asking. Did you fill out an actual supplemental that makes you list all the schools, talk about all the DOs you know, etc? If you filled that out somehow before you were even verified, then that is probably a bad idea.

Sorry I wasn't clear. I meant how long in the afternoon does the interview go until. I'm scheduled to interview at Lecom on 9/29. My thought was to drive down to NSU after my lecom interview and do NSU on the 30th. But then could I fly out of Miami/Ft Laud on the 30th?
