NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
soooooo still didnt get my packet in the mail with the deposit due the 14th- so thats not good. i got a hold of someone in admissions and supposedly paid my deposit over the phone, which wasn't very comforting- especially because she wouldn't even send me any kind of verification of receipt for the deposit or a quick email telling me they have it. ugh so frustrating.

I feel your pain. Payments for my other acceptances are due on the 14th, and I have yet to receive a peep of information since NSU updated my status page on the 23rd. I made 7 calls yesterday alone; finally I gave up calling Ellen and simply moved on to her secretary.

Secretary: "So you've only called a few times, right?"
Me: "More than a dozen times, and I've sent two emails."
Secretary: "And you haven't heard anything?"
Me: "In the three weeks I have been calling, no, I have not. I just get transferred and transferred and transferred, and then finally catch a voice mail."
Secretary: "Let me grab your file.... Well, you're accepted! Congratulations! The paperwork was sent on the 25th, but the holidays may have slowed it down."

The 25th... that's 17 days in the postal system. Her solution?

Secretary: "Well... maybe it's just a slow post. Give it another week, then call me back. Your deposit isn't due until the 23rd, so we can do it over the phone at that time."

It's a good thing they teach medicine and not PR  This isn't very reaffirming for the program, however.

congrats to all the acceptances, im far from it haha

is there any way you can look at your secondary after submitting it? I am having trouble finding that.

So I am interviewing next Friday 12/19

Massively (cannot understate that) to be there!......anyone else joining me?

Thoughts/tips/tricks appreciated

IamAriDO

I'm in!!! Talk about your turn-arounds, I interviewed this past Tuesday! I'm just hoping I won't run into trouble with the acceptance package. Congrats to the others who got in!

Wow now I am getting skeptical. If that is my status does that mean I am in 100%? Anybody ever get that and not actually get in? lol! Paranoia!!

^ provisionally accepted = accepted. From what I understand, it just means as long as you send a deposit, transcripts, etc...then you're in.

Dont know why it keeps posting twice. Stupid fossil of a laptop.

Congrats to everyone, and yes I feel the same way. I can sleep now and actually focus on studying for finals!

It isn't. Calling them puts me in a rage. They're either understaffed or aren't paid enough to care.

I think they need to extend the deadline for the deposit. this is ridiculous! they asked if i felt comfortable enough to pay over the phone. I want to see the you are accepted first in writing before i put money down damit.

i e-mailed ellen already, yet to hear from her! spoke with her secretary but they said that they were really busy and i have yet to even receive a fax!

so if the administration is soo messed up, should i consider anotehr school? this is starting to freak me out!

I couldn't see anything I entered after submission. I e-mailed them because they sent me a PDF back that I could not open, but they were not helpful.

ok thanks, so how do you hear about interviews if you were to receive one?

Did anyone else who interviewed on fri dec 5th get accepted? I was one of the canadian guys there.

Yes, I interviewed on 12/5 and the status now shows provisionally accepted.

Congrats on the acceptances! I finally got a notice in my mail today that said that the packet was ready to be picked up. It is ridiculous that it was sent 11/25 and is just now getting here! But I did get the seasons greeting card also which is nice. ILikeFood-mine is prettier than yours. IamAriDO - you might want to study up on osteo history a little if you haven't already done so, other than that...be yourself. Seriously! I think they will see phonyness a mile away. If this is what you really want then just explain what this experience means to you and what all your other experiences can contribute. I think NSU values bringing people from all over and with different strengths so set yourself apart. You will do great! I got Ellen to fax me the packet so I could pay online. If anyone wants the directions on this (so you will have multiple receipts) just PM me. Well shoot I will just post it:

They take Visa, MC and AmEx.
1. Go to https://touchnet.nova.edu
2. Click: University Store
3. Click: College of Osteopathic Medicine
4. Click: Student Deposits
5. Select the proper deposit. If sending both deposits at once, you must complete 2 transactions.

It was pretty simple and I have receipts now. PM me if I can help with anything. Make sure and have your NSU ID which should be at the top of your "NSU Documents Received" email when you first sent in your secondary. Good luck and do email over calling....it is really the most effective way to reach her. I haven't had to call once since I got Ellen's email.

Oh, also, your deadline for NSU should be later than the 14th if you interviewed after 11/15 I think. Make sure and express in your emails to Ellen that you are up against another deadline and she will probably get back to you faster.

Oh, sorry for the additional post here but I wanted to let people know that I paid online today and webstar has already changed my status from provisionally accepted to deposit received. Thats a good sign. I think paying online is the way to go.

The problem I have with NSU is the following: I want to do rotations and residency in New York. I understand that in the third year you do a rotation at the core site in Florida. The fourth year you would have to arrange your own rotation. Guys and Gals, is that your understanding as well? You are on your own in the fourth year. Is it easing to get a rotation and residency in New York if the med school is in Florida?

Thanks a bunch for all of the info! You're a huge help! I think I'll be waiting a few more days before I do something other than what the secretary told me to do... I'm not sure it would matter, but I just feel that it's more respectful.

I know students who did rotations in Chicago and Baltimore, although that was a little while ago... they graduated '94 and '95.

If you want to do medical school in new york then go to medical school in new york. You'll be able to do some audition rotations up there 4th year, but I highly doubt you could spend all your 4th year there. It isn't a 4th year free for all. You set up some rotations at programs that interest you. It won't block you off from that. First step is just to get accepted and go somewhere you can achieve. The most challenging residencies to get are the ones in NYC. Not really because they are fantastic programs (many of them aren't that great) but because tons of people want to go back to NYC. So basically, you're probably going to spend at least part of your 4th year in Florida or south georgia.

Does anybody know what it says when you are rejected by any chance? I am asking for a friend.

My understanding is the education is good and the price and location (for me) is right. That's what's helped me overlook it.

It doesn't excuse their ineptness though. ****ing hate the admissions office.

I don't know why people hate the admissions office so much. They do get back to you very quickly post interview which is sweeeeeet!

I got my acceptance by fax this evening as I was up against another deadline. It was such a relief to see it. My deadline for deposit is on 12/29 as they are yet to mail my official acceptance by USPS next week. I will pay the deposit online ASAP. Good luck to others waiting!

Ok...I *may* regret this.

I know that many of you who are accepted want the NSU MOM/DAD shirts/stuff to give as christmas gifts to your family.

I will be going to the bookstore the day of my last final (December 18th) and taking pictures of the shirts we have available...I will then come back here and post pictures + pricing + shipping information.....I will then be going back on December 19th with a list, and will purchase and send shirts to anyone that wants them for Holiday gifts for their family.

I will accept payment for said items (no mark up. I'm not making profit here just shipping + price of item) via paypal. if you don't have a pay pal account, you can pay via credit card.

Is this something you guys would want?

Hey guys! I'm interviewing December 16, was wondering if anybody (preferably female) wants to book a hotel with me so we can share the $$$ cost! 🙂

Also, any info on which hotels to book, and what to do while I am around there will be much appreciated!

email: [email protected]

Wow, that is extremely nice of you. What's wrong with you? LOL, jk. ...but seriously.

I was out alllllllllllll day and evening today so now I'm seeing a crap load of people were accepted today and... my status has NOT CHANGED. WTFFFFFF I need to knowwwwww.

Now I'm paranoid. No email from Ellen, no status change... kind of expecting the worst now. And it's a weekend, so no calling. Bad stuff.

-singinfifi - that would be amazing and very generous of you!
-do any current students know the name of the really nice perhaps partial albino woman at NSU?

I recently interviewed at Nova and during the video presentation, they assigned us to two groups. For those of you that were accepted, were you in group one or group two. Just wondering because one group was supprisingly larger than the other. I hope I wasnt in the "Loser" group .

Wow... sounds like every session is a little different. They took our group to the board room.

I received the email invite with the interview day agenda and parking pass, but no address. A google search for NSU COM or anything similar turns up the medicine.nova.edu but even that doesn't have an address.

Does anyone provide a heads up so I can mapquest it and search for hotels close by?

3301 College Avenue, Fort Lauderdale-Davie, Florida 33314-7796
I heard that there was a Comfort Suite 5 mins from the school which offers discounts to students interviewing at Nova. I did not stay there myself because I have a friend that I stayed with down there but look into it.

For those of you who've used priceline: what subdivision of Ft. Lauderdale is closest to the school? (ie Davie, Hollywood, N. Miami, etc)

The school is actually in Davie and the address for the Health Professions Division building is 3200 South University Dr, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33328

Despite what admissions insists on telling you people, there ARE students that will let you stay with them. you can PM me for more information, or catch me on AIM on singinfifi.

Does anyone have a Netter's anatomy access code that they are not using?

hey guys, i was just wondering if anyone that has been accepted into the new class has tried logging into the sharklink or the webmail. they said all official mail will be emailed to your account, however my login keeps failing. i get a message saying username/pass not a match. but i have made sure that everything is correct. maybe i am doing something wrong or if that is happening to anyone else? thanks!
