NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How big are the class sizes at NSU? i remember going into one class room with dental and medical students and I was like wow there are a lot of students.

Did you interview today?

If so, you stuck your head into our neuroanatomy class, which is combined medical/dental for lectures. There are about 240 of us medicals (give or take) which are split into 120 person "lab sections" (so when we split for, say, anatomy lab it's a fantastic ratio of something like 3 ppl per cadaver). I don't know how many "dentites" there are, but I know the room gets freakin FULL when you put us both in there togther. It's only like that for lecture though and I think that the only classes we share with them for lecture are Neuroanatomy (2nd semester) and Histology (1 st semester).

We had a "deans hour" today with all the M1's and M2's and we filled up the auditorium. Normally the place is about 1/2 full.

Anyone interviewing on the 13?

I had a hard time finding a hotel that didn't get reviewed horribly! 🙂 For people that have already interviewed, is it easy to get around by cab or is renting a car necessary?

You know there are students that you can stay with, right?

🙂

I'd rent a car so you can explore a little bit. But that's just me.

I actually interviewed Tuesday, i am getting these thank you cards and sending them tomorrow to the interviewers. I am anxious to know what the decision is. I really loved the facilities there.

Thanks to all for the help in getting with admissions and receiving my acceptance package.
Apparently, my specific package was locked away in a room somewhere and is now on its way in the mail. Luckily, someone, Sarah I think, was able to retrieve it, scan it, and email it to me so that I could fax things back to them (good thing, my deadline is 01/09!).
I appreciate the advice on here and wish everyone the best.

I see a lot of questions about housing. My tips off the top of my head:

1. Stay South of 595 unless you LOVE traffic.
2. The most popular, not necessarily the best, places are Sundance, Sunforest, and Palm Trace Landings. The first two are walking distance, the other is a 5-10min drive. Sundance is a condo property so you'll have to rent from someone but I'm sure tons of people are going to be renting.
3. If you just want to live in an apt property then go down early (May-ish) to put down deposits, but I think the best deals are found in rented condos/houses. In that case noone will let you reserve it that early unless someone is living there now and is moving out at the start of school. So I would go a month later if you want to pursue that option.

Thats all I can think of for now. I wouldn't live too far away your first year, it can get quite overwhelming at times and you want to be close.

What about the new graduate housing? It seems pretty nice in the packet they gave us, and close. Not cheap, but it didnt seem outrageous.

I didn't know that. I got the info on this interview sort of at the last minute. I'm going to look into car rental rates tmr! thanks

If you want to stay with a student, let me know 🙂 I can find one for you. Even on super short notice.

I don't know if I'd trust singinfifi for anything. 😉

Super congrats! 👍👍👍 It looks like there are a lot of us coming from Ohio to sunny South Florida! (I know it says Newport, KY on my info but I work in Cincinnati).

Yay! I would like to hurry up and get there now!

UGH aterry's still going. UGH UGH

🙁🙁🙁🙁

Somebody just bought himself a blanket party at orientation.

Probably discussed before but I can't find anything on search, so what do you do if you're looking for a roommate to share rent with while attending NSU?

I remember I talked to a second year student there and he said that there is like a forum just for roommate finders?

Hi Everyone. Congrats to those who have been accepted!!! Those still waiting, hang in there.

As to the graduate housing, I would imagine they are pushing Rolling Hills as hard on ya'll as they did on our incoming class and I would caution you to be very careful. The class as a whole's complaints as well as those of most individual students come to me, and I have had several of our classmates come to me with complaints regarding the housing situation at Rolling Hills. I have several friends in our class that live there, and many have tried to get out of there leases at the semester break. No matter how they dress it up, THIS IS DORM LIVING!!!!! Especially for those non traditional students who are used to a certain amount of freedom, realize you will be living in a dorm with all the rules and restrictions that go along with. Unless you are comfortable in that setting I would very seriously consider making other living arrangements. There are a number of apartment/condo communities within walking/biking distance of campus, check them out.

If you have any questions, please dont hesitate to drop me a line and I'll get back to you shortly. I'm sorry I haven't been on here more to help with questions, Singinfifi and HOD thank you both so much for taking time out of your schedules to help everyone. You're both Awesome!!

Provisionally accepted.... What does that mean exactly?

I did not think so from what I remember. No?

Lectures are generally taped on a system called Tegrity. It is designed to let you go back and replay the lecture at any time via the internet. Some of the prof's do not allow their power points or slides to be taped, sometimes the sound isn't great, and sometimes it doesn't work at all. Administration views this technology as a priviledge not a right, so when it is broken, it isn't always fixed in short time. Having it as a resource is great when it works, but it is not something you should rely on as your primary learning vehicle. Now, that being said, some students love it, I've had mixed results, others don't use it at all, but it is available.

No matter how they dress it up, THIS IS DORM LIVING!!!!!

I just thought I'd reiterate that for everybody. If you don't mind living in a dorm, then it's not so bad. But um. yes well. Dorms are dorms. Moving along.

Aw shucks! 🙄 it's not like any of us are busy or nuffin. You know, I was TOTALLY bored the other night...(for about 10 minutes...it was glorious).

As for the recording, from what I understand some professors will put a digital recorder in their pocket if you ask them nicely. Better quality then tegrety, which I'm currently fighting with now. Oh whatever will I do if I can't DL my immuno lectures to listen to on my drive to napels????

UGH aterry's still going. UGH UGH

Play nice children, or I'll...wait. I won't do jack. curses!
Well play nice anyway!👍

oh my god i was joking. aterry is in kentucky and i live in california. nevermind! back to the lounge

I'm not sure that's a valid argument, I mean...I'm in FL and you're in california, and I can already say I don't like you!

(that was a joke too. 😛 hehe Just sayin, not particularly sound logic heh)

😉

seriously though. Congrats to all those accepted. I can't wait to see you all next fall.

Hi guys,

I was wondering how safe is the Ft. Lauderdale area at night? I have an interview at DMU the day before my Nova interview, so I was planning on flying out of Des Moines to Nova the night before. The flight into Ft. Lauderdale arrives arround 10:30ish at night. I was planning on finding an accommodation near the airport, and taking a cab to NSU the next morning.

I am a woman, and my family doesn't feel safe with me traveling that late. I've never been to Florida, but I know the area is reasonably close to Miami, which is supposed to be a high crime area. Any thoughts?

This kind of comes off funny to me. You shouldn't have any worries. I doubt you're going to be wandering around any shady neighborhoods with your luggage. While the Miami crime averages are higher than national averages, it isn't a melee in the streets. Just like everywhere else, there are certain neighborhoods you want to stay out of. 10:30 at night isn't late by South Florida standards. The party is just getting started.

Just recieved the interview invite for NSU-COM. Anyone else going on the 27th or 29th? Any tips from current NSU students?

My flight arrived around midnight when I flew down to interview. I took a cab from the airport to the hotel. I then used the hotel shuttle to and from the school and airport the next day. You will be fine just be aware of your surroundings and ask how much the cab fare is to your hotel before you get in the cab. Good luck!

👍

It's Ft. Lauderdale, not Detroit or north Philly. And even there, getting a cab from the airport and going to a hotel is totally safe.

You'll be fine, rkaz. I would say, by and large, women can travel by themselves in the US without any problems (so long as you aren't wandering bad neighborhoods by yourself at night).

I received an email from Ellen yesterday saying I could get my SharkLink ID and login to receive necessary paperwork, etc. Well, I retrieved my ID and the temporary password, but then received an error message saying that the username and password don't match. Is anybody else having this issue or know how to get around it? Thanks!

^ I have the same problem with my sharklink login. Webstar works for me just fine, but I get the same error message on sharklink. I think I'll give them a shout on Monday and get everything fixed.

I'm having the same issue. You're not the only one. I gave up after a few tries, I figure it's not urgent at this point.

Same goes for me. The help desk told me to call them back on Monday.

Great, thanks for the heads up. They really made them seem like apartments...but dorms? I'm all set on being policed for cracking open a beer on my balcony. 🙄

Tha Comfort Suites are fine. I dont know why anyone would review it poorly. They have a shuttle to/from the airport and Nova, clean, nice rooms, and there was a handful of other interviewees there. You dont need to rent a car unless you want to do some sightseeing. The cabs were pretty ridiculous for a trip to the beach.

I have found Nova's technologies rather frustrating for me. I got the same info and email and I cannot log into any of it, nor can I change my temporary password. If it doesn't work for anybody why don't they fix it before they email it out. It is obviously a bug in their system. It just frustrates me to have to take time out of my day to call them on something they should have had working in the first place. Sorry for my rant... it just seems silly...

Definitely avoid Rolling Hills then. I live there now and last semester one of my friends got written up for having an UNOPENED can of beer in the student lounge, even though he is 25 and everyone in there was 21+. It's ridiculous. We all hate it.

....I gotta know...what happens if you get "written up".....?

This is why I'm never, ever again living in university housing. I like being able to live as an adult...seeing as I am one.

omg, what is that? :scared:

It can be used in either end, but generally was used for a crime stemming from the mouth such as lying or blasphemy. You have that forcefully inserted into your mouth where they begin to turn that little key at the top. It makes the different flaps open wider and wider. Eventually your teeth break off, your jaw dislocates and if they keep going you'll pretty much...die.

It can be inserted in the other end for graphic results as well.

I'm about to graduate after 4 years at nova. I've done well, but I must recommend against the school. The class sizes are way too big now, they treat you like little kids (dress codes, finger print scanning for megalecture attendances, and more strange little rules than you can shake a stick at), and the administration is very rude and unaccomodating.

It'a a doctor factory, and way too expensive.

"if you must choose, choose wisely."

Could you elaborate a little more on the strange rules? Lol.

Holy crap mosspoh hahahahahahah remind me NEVER to piss you off at school in the fall!!!

For a school with huge class sizes (yes, 240 is big) the fact that we have a student/cadaver ratio of 3/1 is pretty impressive. Along those lines, don't forget that our class is split into two sections for lab so that you get a lot more individual attention.

Yeah, the concept of a dress code bugs me too, just in general, but honestly? It's not restrictive. You don't have to wear a tie if you're a guy, or even a button down shirt. If you're a girl, slacks and a blouse are fine. I see a lot of people wearing scrub pants with a T-shirt (which is technically against dress code) and i mean, if that REALLY bothers you, you can just wear scrubs! I haaaaaaaaaaaate the dress code for OPP and CP...but I guess it's necessary as we're actually touching/observing things.

I was unaware we had fingerprint scanning...what school do you go to?

What strange little rules? Do you mean the attendance policy? Or...what? I'd love to know, as I haven't run into them yet.

Some of the administration leaves some to be desired, however some of tehm are EXTREMELY helpful and open. I got hurt at the beginning of the year last semester and I can't even tell you how supportive the faculty AND the administration were. I gues syou just have to approach them in the right way?

Anyway, sucks that you had a bad experience with Nova. I hope they made you a decent physician anyway.

I watch a lot of history channel and go to a lot of museums. 😉 I don't think I'll order a pear of anguish to use on anyone.....unless you're really annoying.

I respect your opinion completely. No matter what school one goes to there WILL be gripes. That being said, it is kind of odd to register and have your first post be a warning to people possibly going to NSU. Especially when it was nothing that seemed to really hamper the education.

agreed. MEDIC99 - if possible, please spend some time giving a more elaborate post. we would all love to hear about your opinions and experiences. otherwise most will prob just assume youre a premed trying to get others to drop a seat in the class.

Hey so is it true you can just wear scrubs everyday if you don't like to dress up? Also, I don't understand the complaint about checking into class.....if you are going to class anyway, why not get credit it for it (and it has been my experience that some teachers look at that in making some decisions about final grades) and if you don't like going to class, well you know about the policy going into the school so maybe you should have chosen a different learning pathway that are available at other schools. Thanks for some information though. I am nervous about the larger class size as I have always had small classes throughout my education but I welcome the new experience.

On the other, disturbing pear note.....MossPoh, I have been to an actual torture museum in Italy (I think I have seen that thing in person!). Its in San Gimignano and I have no idea why we went in! It was kind of interesting but when you left you felt like looking for the nearest Ghandi museum..LOL.
