NSU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The huge sums of cash these schools expect us to have laying around is killing me. Wasn't the first grand enough?! 😎

I completely agree. MD schools deposits for most schools are $50-$100 and some are refundable. I think AACOMAS needs to do something about the ridiculous prices the DO schools are charging. Anybody agree?

I couldn't imagine, but I know how LECOM is able to open up so many satellite campuses lately! :wtf:

Wow...does anyone else have a hard time not finding the perfect emoticon to express your SDN thoughts...lol. Okay. I need to stop - I'm addicted...some of these bananas are going to have to get nix'ed

Your GPA is great and should help. MCAT is a little low but nothing that will keep you out of an interview in my opinion. Residence-wise I was just wondering if you were IS or OOS but it wont factor in too much since NSU is a private school and not too in-state specific. Hopefully you have some good shadowing, volunteering, and LOR.

Because your stats are good, I think you'll have a shot. If your a female or URM than youll have an even better shot. If I were you I'd call to verify that all of your materials are ACTUALLY IN. Because if they didnt input one of your LOR or didnt receive a signature page...they wont process your application through.

Aside from the typo, I am not sure this is true anymore. That mission was accomplished about 5 years ago and females are now the majority of med students overall.

I actually think the deposit is somewhat fair. One of the big problems with MD schools is that people hold like 3 spots as long as possible. This forces you to make a decision with some kind of fresh idea still in your mind.

Sigh - Im not talking about if there are more men or women in medicals school. Ever picked up an MSAR, TPR, USNEWS rankings where they list out the stats of acceptances/applicants?? The number of females that receive acceptances divided by total that apply >>> males that receive acceptances divided by total that apply.

Its like Title 9 for collegiate sports. It states that there should be equal amount of resources for women as there are for men in sports. Okay, seems fair enough... but the problem is that there are a far greater number of men wanting to compete in college sports than women.

Thanks. I was just about to say that.
And I am a female. but not an URM

I am currently filling out the supplemental application. Anyone know why they want to know so much about the other schools I am applying to? Feels a bit intrusive.

I don't know, just answer truthfully, it won't impact anything.

it really doesnt matter. i put all of my md and do, between 8-10 in each and had no problem with interview/acceptance. ive seen people say that they put 30 schools down and still get in.

I had majority of MD schools on my application and I wasn't asked about it at all at the interview. Hope this helps!

Also, a friend of mine who is applying called the school today and was told that they were "closing up" and inviting the last of the interviews. They said that March 19th (not 100% sure I heard the right date...) is the last and only day left they are interviewing. Since I didn't talk to them myself and I think they're taking supplemental applications until March I don't know how truthful they were being. But I guess this is what they are telling people?

well that's not encouraging at all

Well I hope this will help... I asked my friend about that conversation again she said the woman on the phone made it sound very confusing and that it might take a few weeks to "close down". So don't give up!

Hey guys, I just declined my interview at Nova for next Friday, February 20th. So if anyone is looking for an interview soon, I wanted to let you know about this.

Declining my interview was painful, as Nova seems like such a great program. I decided that it would be best, however, for me to live near my family in Arizona, if possible.

Congrats to those accepted, and good luck to those still waiting!

does anyone know the average comlex is or the pass rate for NOVA?

I was asked specially and directly about my MD/DO applications. "I see hear that you applied to 13 allo and 15 osteo schools. Why? [or some similar question]"

me: (summary) I'd rather be a DO and I'd rather go to NSU

Hey, I recently got an iPhone (yay!!) and I am wondering if anyone else has set up nova email on their phone. Also, any good apps (med school or in general) that you would suggest? Thanks!

I know there is going to be a lot of opinions of the multitude of medical apps you can put on your palm/crackberry/iphone.

One of the most important ones is epocrates. It's a drug guide. It lists all the pharmaceuticals you will be prescribing in your near future. It's got adult/peds dosing, mechanism of action, costs, drug to drug interactions, etc. etc. etc. I use this program on a daily basis.
Oh...and it's FREE.
It will be more useful during your clinical rotations, but it will be nice to plug in some drugs our profs will be mentioning during lectures.

I wouldn't pay for the upgraded applications. The free ones will do the trick.

I am definitely going to purchase the Netter Anatomy flashcards for the iphone/itouch for Anatomy next year!

Can someone go to their Webstar Status page and see if it says
"Configuration Error - No data found in table SARERUL - ALLOWDECISION" on the bottom of the page? I just think there's something wrong in the system; it just showed up out of no where today.

I have the same thing. Twice. Though it's at the bottom of the page... under decision, it says "Invited for an interview."

Of course, I interviewed back on February 6th.

Anyone have any ideas?

the assistant dean told us we would find out within "two weeks," what is everyones esperience with two weeks. How did you guys find out if you got accepted or waitlisted?

within two weeks seems about right. of course some have waited a month or two (very rare).

i found out in week and a half, first on webstar, then got an email a couple days after that.

great thanks! how do you get notified if you are not accepted?

same process. go to webstar and look under your admissions status. it would say waitlist or not accepted.
good luck.

hey i have the same thing, but on the status it still says "Deposit Received"

so yep, it does seem like it is some type of system error

I got the "alternate status" exactly two weeks after my interview. No news since then. Calls or emails are futile.

since everyone is checking their status, did your webstars still say invited for interview after interviewing?

yea mine did. it continued to say it for about week and a half whent hey updated it to say provisionally accepted

Hey Guys,

I was just wondering if anyone has been taken off the waitlist at NOVA? Please let me know if you have, I am just curious if they have begun to take people off of it.

Thanks!

Not that I know of. By that I mean I havent and no one in this thread has mentioned it. It is likely they will start pulling people after the March 15th deposit deadline.

Has anyone from the 2/6 interview heard anything back yet? I'm about to have a nervous breakdown, this waiting is awful 🙁

ilovebigbear,

Have you checked your sharklink, i thought it was about two weeks when you found out

ILoveBigBear,

I also interviewed on 2/6 and have been checking WebSTAR constantly. Nada. My interviewers insisted that they make decisions every week. What's worse is that LECOM-Bradenton (2nd choice) wants a grand by early next week.

On Monday I emailed to explain my situation and ask when WebSTAR would be updated. They haven't emailed me back and at this point I'm not expected that they will. Oh well! I definitely feel your pain.

the dean told us that if you call you will get the answer....so i guess give it a shot calling the office

at my interview date i was told the same thing. that if you had AN URGENT (they stressed this) reason to know your status you can call and
they will tell you.

only problem is...they are pretty awful at picking up telephones. might have to try multiple times.

I interviewed 2/6 and found out just now through WebSTAR. It now says "Alternate status." (Boo.) But before then, it said "Invited for an Interview." So this is the note that changes.

Hopefully this means other 2/6ers should have their status change! Best of luck!

Hey, does anyone know an estimate as to how many seats are left at Nova? I interviewed 2/20 and I just wanted to know my chances.
Thanks!

seems like a lot of people who interviewed in the new year (2009) have been placed on the alternate list... so im guessing not a lot.

mid-March is the next deposit so there should be some movement after that

FYI: about 280 people on the official "Class of 2013" Group now through NSU. Obviously not everyone on there will be attending. But it is getting very full.

I wouldnt expect to see many more acceptances until after March 15th. (When the next deposit is due) They cant really accept more people until some drop out.

You guys are gonna like the upcoming match list... weve got at least 4 ortho's...1 ENT..18 Emergency...12 Surgery..which is just a portion of the DO match.. They'll publish the match list in a couple of months..so just anxiously await...

i just our match list can keep up..

My WebStar says 'alternate status' now too. Are we thinking that means not accepted?
Saddd

280???? daang, where is this group????

When you are accepted, you are given access to the Nova Shark Link. This is a way of communicating to the class of 2013. You can see a list of all the names of people who have signed up for the 2013 class group. Link is right in that there are way over the 230 people listed in this group. BUT...again the last deposit deadline is roughly 3 weeks away. I have no idea what percentage will drop off this list. Looking at past years forums there seems to be a lot of movement. So your going to have to sit and cross your fingers for another month before you know anything.

As always best of luck to all of the folks who are waiting for an answer.

o thanks, looks like i interviewed for a waitlist spot
