NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The email had a parking permit, confirmation letter, and itinerary. There wasn't any info on hotels. The interview day is from 9AM-230PM, includes the interview, tour of the campus and the med. school. The good news is the Ft.Lauderdale airport is only like 6 miles away from the school.

Yea, I was happy to see that. One of the hotels suggested on their website, Comfort Suites, was $82 a night, which included transportation to and from the campus and airport--I called the hotel to confirm.

I booked my round trip flight from LA to FL. I am thinking about booking the comfort suites as people are suggesting

I booked my flight and hotel yesterday...

Questions:

1) For the secondary question: Please specify the extent (offices held, etc.) of your involvement in each of the selected activities. What did you guys do for this? Just copy/paste from aacomas? I'm not sure what format they're looking for. For example:
-XX club: ZZ committee
-YY activity: WW officer

Or do they want a huge paragraph listing position held and your responsibilities etc?

2) Does anyone know how the secondary fee waiver works?

3) I applied to 1 MD (in-state) and 7 DO schools as of right now. I'm still waiting for MCAT score which will be released early August. And depending on my score, I plan to apply (or not) to more MD and/or DO. So when they ask for a list of all schools applied this cycle, do I just list where I've applied as of right now? Is it acceptable to write a note in the box saying that I plan on applying to more schools upon MCAT score release?

Thanks!

awesome hotel. Stayed there last year during my interview. Would definitely recommend it. It was great that they had a complementary breakfast bar since it saved me some money on an already expensive trip.

They will pick you up and drop you of at the airport as well as the school. The school is literally only a two minute drive from the hotel.

Awesome to know...thanks for the feedback!

how can i get a ride back to the airport if i'm on nsu's campus?

I'm sure it could work out, but I'm going to end up renting a car for the day before & the interview day. Then at least the day before I can drive around, know exactly where to go, ensure I get back to the airport in time for my flight, etc. A little of a control issue I guess!

the hotel shuttle service will give you a number and you just tell them that you need to be picked up where they dropped you off in the morning and taken to the airport for your flight.

I stayed at Comfort Suites as well. It worked out really great for me - the only real downside I found was that the closest food (at least the time of night I got in) was Pancake House. As for getting to the airport, I just left my bag with the front desk and went to the interview. As schussboarder noted, the hotel is minutes from the school; I just picked up my bag, and took the shuttle to the airport.

One note: I traveled from CO, meaning I had to do a transfer along the way. My best advice to anybody going anywhere is to pack in a small, overhead suitcase and show up as early as possible to guarantee that your bag is above you. This was the flight where they forced me to check my bag, lost it on the transfer, and almost left me without a suit for an interview (I got in at 9pm and the shuttle to NSU left at 7. I got my bag at 5 - a little too close for comfort).

nightmare!!!!

Did anybody else who has an interview date for AUG 20th get a phone call saying that is not suppose to be an interview date?

They rescheduled me to Aug 27. I was literately 5 seconds from entering my credit card info when Nova called. I feel terrible for people who bought plane tickets already

I didn't have a place ticket yet but had to change my hotel reservation. I was scheduled for August 20th but was told the only available dates were September 1st or later. I took September 3rd because my TUCOM-NV interview is on the 1st.

Yup, same happened to me. Got the phone call this morning. I almost bought a plane ticket too.

Yeah that is what the lady told me too--Sept. 1 or later.
Did anyone get a Friday? Looks like mostly Thursdays were offered.

She said only Tuesdays or Thursays. Looks like I will have to fly to Ft. Lauderdale right from my TUCOM-NV interview. Busy couple of days!!

Anyone else here get September 3rd for an interview re-schedule.

I will be there September 3rd, but my date is not a re-schedule...

It is great to get to know my fellow interviewees here. I just got my August 27th interview confirmation today. Does anybody know whether the interview is going to be one-on-one or in a group format? I read the interview feedback and it seemed that some were interviewed in a group while others were not?

I'm doing the same thing. No real point of flying back home to fly back out the next day.

Yeah, I just got everything done today. Airlines and hotels for both interviews. Can you say $$$$$$$$$?!?! I got a crazy flight from Nevada. I leave at night and get to Lauderdale in the AM the day before my interview. Plenty of time to get enough sleep and find my way around.

For those of you who also have 2 interviews (i.e. one day after another), are you bringing 2 interview suits or are you just bringing one? (I'm female) I only have 1 suit so maybe I should buy another?
Good :luck: to all of us here!!

i'm going to bring 1 suit but 2 shirts. i'll be in florida 1 day early, so if i do need to clean it, i'll have time to clean it.

Hey just wanted to let anyone know who is going to FLL that there is $200 off on Expedia if you book three nights with a flight. I'm getting the flight and three nights a little over $200.

Would someone mind posting what the secondary questions are? I would like to work on them and I am still waiting for my application to be verified! Thanks!! 🙂

There are no secondary questions. You just have to list all the schools both MD and DO that you applied to and a list of your medically related activities.

There are none...but you will have to repeat your volunteer and work experiences...

Good luck!

Damn...beat me...and did a more thorough job....

Woo Hoo! I finally got my committee letter and sent it through Interfolio this morning! Crossing my fingers for an interview... :xf:

That is a good feeling...

Don't know why it took me so long to notice this but anyone else puzzled at the interview timeline? Interviews are 2 hours, split into 2 groups. The majority of the posts on SDN Interview Feedback say the interviews were 30 minutes, exept the ones in March and April were like 15. How can they spend 30 minutes on everyone in 2 hours? That's enough for 4 people, and surely they interview more than 4 people per interview day!! Most schools average around 10-12.

Also, if they do only spend like 15 minutes, that doesn't seem like much time to make a good determination about someone, unless their interview falls apart in the first minute.

Anyone else thought about this, or am I just missing something.

They have multiple interviewers

most of the people who got interviewed this early submitted before the adcom started reviewing our apps. so i dont think any of us would know for sure.
i submitted my secondary on 6/28 and heard last week about an interview.

When's your interview??

I am calling this morning to book it. Right now their system is down. I was thinking about trying to book it the same week as my Bradenton interivew, but that is on the 21st of September and I would really like to get it done earlier. How much of a disadvantage would you say it is to interview the 22nd as opposed to the 8th or 15th?

Nevermind, the car rental prices in that area are ridiculous. It is cheaper to just book a whole new trip. Fools want 60+ a day.

Dont think it is much of a disadvantage. Personally, I think an interview anytime before November is VERY early.

Booked My interview for September 8th. Depending on rental prices, I will probably do the Comfort Inn thing referred to above.

hey guys how long did it take to become complete after mailing in the signature page?

Why do they want a list of schools you're applying to? I'm applying to a few MD and 4 DO and don't want to make them think they're a backup school because they're definitely not! Also, I don't have a physician letter yet - obviously that's not going to cut it with them... but I'll have one in a few weeks (I feel uncomfortable asking a doctor that I haven't spent significant time with). Do they schedule interviews without having all the LORs?

Don't worry about listing your schools...I put down all nine DO's and seven MD's and still got an interview...As I recall, some people have gotten interviews without a DO letter, but it needs to be submitted at some point....

Woohoo... well it just says physician. I'm trying to get one from an ENT DO and/or EM DO but I'll need just a few weeks before I feel like they'll know me enough. Both of them are NSU alums.

List all of the schools you applied to, that is what I did. I applied to ~50 schools, was accepted to and will be attending nova. It came up lightheartedly in the interview they were like wow that is a lot of schools, I said yea it is and then went into why nova.

Yea, definitely. I don't have 50! I just have the ones in areas I thought I'd be happy in. FL's my #1 priority and I'd definitely do NSU over some OOS MD places.

I was wondering the same thing! I also have no pre-professional committee letter; I have a d.o. letter plus a grad advisor, employer, and organic prof. I emailed them last week but haven't heard back either. I graduated from college in 2003, and haven't taken a liberal arts class since then. Let me know if you hear from them...

I called on Friday about the liberal arts letter, bc I was going to try and use another letter in luei of it also and she said the one I have (which is from a massage teacher) won't be accepted...it has to be liberal art/humanities...which means I am having to go back to professors I had years ago and act really desperate. I just wanted to let people know that this year they are strict about it, so even if you have your interview date 🙂, make sure your letters will work.
