******* NYCOM Class of 2011 Part 2 ******

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think what they are doing is a hazing...

Never ever did NYCOM have so many hours of class AND having it mandatory. They are trying to bring their baord scores up thats all.

I have a big feeling that once Intro is over, it will all even out.

😱 <~ anyone else like this every night???? LOL

I feel like this every night: :scared:😡+pissed+😴 ....Pretty much in that order too

i'm burnt too. i heard through the grapevine that someone asked linda if the schedule would be less intense for the next section, and that she said yes.

i don't know if this is true or not though, just hearsay...

a second year suggested we contact linda to let her know how we feel about the schedule also. not sure if student's speaking up makes a difference though....maybe someone else can weigh in on that.

if enough of us speak up, they'll have to at least listen. who knows if anything will change... but we could try

The person you want to contact is Dr. Claire Bryant, not Linda. Dr. Bryant is the Assistant dean of pre-clinical education. She is the one who ultimately puts together our schedules. Her office is down the hall from admissions and she's very friendly so don't hesitate to go up and speak to her. Linda works more with clubs, activities and the sga.

Actually if you guys think this exam is stressful, you should look at the schedule for the next exam. We have 3 weeks of material worth of a written exam and the major anatomy exam on the same day.

While I understand that theyre trying to increase the board scores, every student studies differently. They really cant force us to follow their study pattern because in all honestly people who are not used to this study schedule are suffering. I barely have time to do anything once I get home much less go over the material of the day and then do the readings for the next day AND prepare for the lab which we seem to be having thrice a week now. Ive spoken to a lot of students and everyones starting to feel a bit burned out already.

This better slow down a bit, not in terms of material because obviously this is medical school, but in terms of schedule.

Also I would really really prefer that students are treated with a bit more respect. These guys are having a bit too much fun watching us sweat and scramble.

It'll get better, fund was tough but I remeber Musculoskeletal being a piece of cake compared to it....It just takes time and you'll get use to the pace

As I recall someone in nycom saying that medicine, medical school, our DO degree, is not just a destination, its the experience, its the lifestyle, its the path that we are to take. Noone is saying that we shouldnt get any readings or not be overloaded with work....but this is just ABNORMAL. Like ive been crammed with work, as I am sure most of you have, i mean, you cant get into med school if your not driven, but THIS, this is not right.

During orientation, i was really starting to believe that graduation and our degree is not the destination, but now, im just like eff the process, i just wanna be done haha.

and now back to studying 👎

Thanks Jason.

I agree with Vee--it's definitly worth a try to speak with Dr. Bryant. Probably sooner rather than later, to see if we can have any input on schedule changes.

I am going to try and stop in on Tuesday, you guys should do the same 😀

I believe after fundementals we should have class 8 to 12 twice or three times a week. Which of course would be alot better than this.
I can understand why some people choose to stream rather than go to every class. In our case we go to class and have to stream which takes double the time.

I hope everyone took some time to relax this labor day weekend and not stree out to much. If you are studying you must pass. Hopefully 🙁

😆 😆 😆

i'm sorry, have you been going to NYCOM these past few weeks? it will not make a difference. do you think the 2010's didn't fight mandatory attendance tooth and nail? and what did it accomplish? you think there wasn't repeated trashing of particular professors on course evals? seems they're all still teaching the same. all of us have more frequent tests this year, and yeah, it sucks, but slightly less than fewer giant tests (imho). and the anatomy/OMM/written testing on the same day is nothing new. as i recall, things changed a little every block in terms of schedule, but i wouldn't have called it "lighter" (at least from DPC perspective), just "different."

as for the workload whiny going on in this here board, what did we tell you before you started and you din'nt wanna hear?

Welcome to the Suck, young jedi. Welcome to the Suck.

workload whiny?

i don't think people are upset about the amount of work, it's the class schedule that sucks and is not conducive to learning and retaining the information. people are going to burn out quickly at this rate of 8/9-5 class every day plus a few hours of studying each night.

i know you guys fought the attendance thing but does that mean we shouldn't speak up about any issues in the future now?

I don't mean to dissent, but it's not that bad. I have enough time everyday to read, exercise, play music, and hang out. We can even party and go on dates during the weekend.

Granted it would be cool if I didn't have to be treated like I was in high school. You can always listen to an iPod and read. Or you can stream the previous days lectures and take notes. Or you can give your friends your clicker (but from the looks of it, it looks like most people are still going). Wouldn't you be going to class anyway? The irritating part to me is that I have to carry around this little remote control. If I'm in class, cool, high five me and do lecture. Why do I have to push a button?

Either way, I get why it's not cool. But I mean, it's not even bad really. Perhaps a way to approach it would be to only require those who have a score below some threshold average to attend. I'm sure most people would still go anyway.

As a second year, I'm sympathizing with you guys a little. I can't believe you have 8-5 class EVERY day. The few times we actually have 8-5 (we've had it once so far this year) I'm burnt out and when I get home I just relax.

Personally, I can't sit in class for 8 hours and then just study. My suggestion to you guys is to do something similar to what I do. Study in class. If you study in class, you can just go home and relax. Most of the professors waste your time lecturing, you'll learn who is worth listening to. I love Stepp's lecture notes for example, but he's boring as a lecturer (although he does know his stuff). I sit in his lectures and study while I'm there.

You'll find studying on your own to be a huge way to save time. Read through the powerpoints in about 10-15 minutes at the beginning of all lectures and see if there is anything you may need to pay attention to. If not, spend the rest of the lecture time studying the material through reading the notes/powerpoints/review books. It will save you the need to study when you get home, trust me.

Definitely an awesome suggestion that for some reason I hadn't even thought of before. Because, yes, I am one of those people who simply cannot sit in lecture attempting to absorb information not pertinent to the exam, or a prof's rambling tangent, and then go home and study for several hours. It's just draining. But that aside, I can definitely handle the workload.

Soo ... I am going to try to do that from now on after this exam! Question, though. How do you study while hearing the professor lecture? And don't you feel the need to constantly look up and maintain eye contact with the prof? These are ridiculous questions, I realize, but I'm just trying to gauge your technique.

that's a really good idea actually. thanks.

its not so hard - u can use headphones and stream yesterdays lectures -ive done it already a few times and ive seen other people doing it too - just sit in the back.

Don't sit too close to the doors. I've had professors (esp thread coordinators) plop down right next to me when I did that so I prefer sitting closer to the front now.

SIT IN THE FRONT! Then maybe they'll get the idea.

I have actually been doing that all week. Its nervous in the beginning, because you think that the lecturer can see you with your head phones on, but after a while, it makes life so much easier. I sit in the back, and half the people there with me are either watching yankees updates on gameday, or playing random games. The right side of the room is always packed....so no room for teachers to sit 😉

but even with doing that, ur still BEAT when you get home, because 8-5 is a full time job with an hour of overtime haha

they'll be lucky if everyone isn't sleeping through the lecture tomorrow afternoon after the exam. :scared: 😴

[FONT=Courier New,Courier,mono]Sorry folks,

I am down, recuperating from an MI on Sunday. Will not be around for the next few weeks.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation with whoever runs the classes during this period.

Regards.

Best wishes,
C Kumar.

yankee day games get me through afternoon lectures

Oh my God. That's so awful, poor guy. Hope he takes it easy.

I wonder if there's a way to donate for flowers or something for Dr. Kumar. I'll shoot an email to Claire or Linda or someone and let the group know

He must be taking all these power outages and problems with the clickers personally...wow...

Seriously though, use classtime to study. I dont think the lecturers will take it personally if you're sitting there studying. Honestly, I wouldnt waste my time streaming though...use the textbooks and your notes and study away. If you study well enough on your 8-5 days you really shouldnt have to do much at home, just spend your weekends recapping the week and you'll be fine.

what do you guys think will be on the exam from the OMM lectures. I cant see there being many questions

1. applying freyette's principles/types of somatic dysfunctions
2. acute vs. chronic somatic dysfunctions
3. rule of 3
4. TART
5. Active vs. passive
6. When not to use OMM
7. Anatomic vs. Physiological vs. Restrictive barriers
etc.

plus, some of the questions won't be regurgitation questions. i'm sure some will have a mini-scenario, and we need to apply what we know.

OMM questions in my opinion tend to be the easiest questions on the exam. I wouldn't stress about them too much. I'm not sure how much you guys did already but the OMM questions tend to be straight forward and they love to ask questions on "the level" of the dysfunction. I'm not sure if you guys are up to that or not yet.

whos burnt out and feels like they just want it to be tomorow after the test already... i hate the fact that we have to wait 3 hours and then have class again

I can't believe we have to hang around or do something for 3 hours until they drill more information in our heads.

Well, on the bright side (not that there's much of one), at least it's enough time for a nap.

I wish I could nap..I'll be spending it at the library prepping for the two anatomy labs I have this week 🙁

Does anybody have any idea why the attendance only shows 2 dates? Is that from all the clicker issues, and our attendance really isn't being counted so it's all a big illusion?

I asked Kumar about that a few days ago and he said the attendance just wasn't uploaded.

First exam was not too bad. Now that the first exam is over what are you guys doing to unwind?
I am going to get some much needed shut eye.😴😴😴

If the reason for the attendance policy is so that board scores should go up. Why isn't the administration treating the "disease" so to speak? You would think the administrators were doctors or something.🙄 It is like they are giving a band aid for a headache instead of tylenol.

If the problem is the boards then help students improve those scores. If they want the board scores to rise the instructors should gear the material as well as the exam style to the boards. I don't think having an attendance policy will change the boards outcome.

If the first years have a SGA we should fight this attendance policy and this schedule. There should be no class after an exam. There also shouldn't be multiple exams in one day.

you should be electing your SGA soon. we had one around fundamentals...nuff said.

i agree about no classes after exams.

multiple exams in one day or week is not unusual in med school.

I talked to my friends at other schools, and they all have practicals and wrtten exams the same day, so I don't think it's something uncommon. In a way, studying for one helps you with the other exam. But class after an exam, especially with a 3 hour break, that is not cool. Even if it wasn't a class that required too much concentration, it still was tough just sitting there.

Actually, it wasn't as bad as I thought because the DPR lecture was awesome. I just sat back, relax and enjoyed it. Besides, I wouldn't study after the exam anyway. So, at least I get something done. If the lecture was boring, it would be beyond terrible.3 hour break time is much more than we needed though.
Anyway, the test was pretty good although I was expecting a little more in depth and less vague questions.
Also, a couple of questions have multiple (arguably) good answers. So, let's see how it is gonna be.

As a side note, does anyone know if you can access your finantial info online on NYIT or NYCOM? I still haven't receive my check.

I haven't received my check either, but according to the Financial Aid people you can access it on your account online.

I'm prett sure you can go to NYIT connect, and under the student menu you can check your financial aid status.

my check came last week... maybe you should give them a call?

i just wanna say that board scores isnt the only reason for this attendance policy. im old school nycom, back when 10 people showed up to lecture. and i actually was one of those 10 people. at any rate, nycom tries hard to get outside people to come here and lecture. and for the most part, the adjuncts that they get are "experts" in their field. im sure you will agree that most are better than some of the full-time faculty. and think about it, would you wanna come here and lecture to an empty lecture hall? and i know you can make the argument that they get paid regardless of how many people show up. i've said all this to mr. bow-tie himself. but it just makes us look bad to the outside.

i definitely dont agree with the policy, but i just wanted to give you guys another perspective. all i can say is use your time wisely, take naps in class, stream other lectures, study for something else... they can force you to go but they cant force you to listen.

Yeah, sad to say it but I don't even stream let alone pay attention to many of the lectures. I can learn more reading a book or the packets they give us rather than listening to lecture. The only good thing about mandatory attendance is that I'm forced to start my reading every day at 8am, which is actually turning out to be productive! 🙂

Simple solution would be making lectures from a guest lecturer mandatory.

Simple solution would be making lectures from a guest lecturer mandatory.

thats the logical, rational answer. too bad we're talking about nycom. its not that simple though. then the full-time faculty would raise hell because no one would attend their lectures, and then what. it's not like they are gonna change the way they teach. they made the fellows take a course on how to teach, why not some of the professors? having a PhD doesnt make you a teacher, but thats a whole other issue.... just hang in there guys, every year nycom screws the class over in one way or another, but we all make it out alive... and the majority of us do pretty damn well for ourselves once we leave...

I think it also has to do with the ~10% of the second years that were kicked out from what I heard... rumors perhaps. But maybe they realized how much money they couldve made with those 30 extra students!

30 students did not get kicked out of our class. There were several (like 4 or 5) that failed and were not asked to return. The rest that failed were asked to repeat 1st year, and some took the offer. Any other people we lost, left by choice.

THe reason they are so concerned with board scores is because they are trying to implement a rule (not sure if it is official yet or not) that you not only have to SIT for step 1 before starting 3rd year, you have to PASS step 1 before starting 3rd year. This will be a nationwide rule, not a local one, and I don't know when they are implementing it, but it is still a concern for all schools.
