General Admissions & OTCAS NYU & Columbia 2018

Where are you planning to go?

I'll most likely be going to Tufts instead! Boston is still an expensive city, but more do-able for me since they offered some scholarship money. I'm excited and happy with my decision, but a still little jealous of everyone that gets to have the New York City experience, especially since NYU and Columbia are both such great programs too!

I am in the exact same boat!! Maybe I'll see you there

Nope. It was an acceptance letter
Congratulations! I am hoping on NYU! I just don't understand how they have waitlisted people and are accepting new people not off the waitlist.

I agree. I am somewhat concerned with their process as I am waitlisted too. I called admissions but I believe there is a student working behind the desk. He didn’t sound too confident when I asked him how the waitlist works. He stated that after the first wave of acceptances, the admissions team will review all the waitlisted students since it is not ranked.

But it seams like they are not even doing that. Because that first wave of acceptances went out that second week in February and then the waitlisters now acceptances not from the waitlist 🙁

I got wait listed too, but I am going to turn down my place in the list, as I have accepted my other offer already.

For those of you considering the MS/OTD program at NYU, a current student told me they are looking for a cohort of 10-12 people. The MS program has a cohort of about 50. I'm assuming that they all take classes together, but the small group of MS/OTD students may have more opportunities to work with faculty members in a smaller group setting.

Congrats!! I have a couple offers but still so undecided
I have the offer from my #1 choice school, so it's no brainier for me, especially considering the cost of NYU. I didn't apply to Columbia, I know few alumni from there and they didn't like the school and the program, they talked me out of Columbia.

I know, the cost of NYU is outrageous--I really don't think it would be worth it, but I'm sure it would still be a great experience. I didn't apply to Columbia either.

Congrats on getting an offer from your #1 choice! What school?

Did they say why they didn’t like the school and the program?

They were generally not happy with faculty and their treating students, also they didn't like so much emphasis on mental health, which is not so prevalent in OT nowadays.

Gotcha. Okay. Thanks for sharing! It’s appreciated! I will be attending Columbia in the Fall; hopefully I’ll have a much better experience. Best of luck! 🙂

I have to disagree with there being a decreased emphasis on mental health in the field. I think mental health is underfunded, and as a result there may be fewer jobs and jobs with less pay compared to other disciplines, but IMO, the relevance of OT in the field is just as, if not more important than ever before. It's not for everyone, but I really like the emphasis on mental health.

You will get a fieldwork in mental health anyway in any school. But Columbia requires 2 field works in this area. My friend who finished Columbia and now working in pediatric setting complained, she felt she was not well prepared for that and had difficulties, unlike fresh OT grads from other schools. Another alumni complained about staff not working collaboratively with students and not care much about them. I personally have no experience with this school, so I can't judge. I only went to their information session that I didn't like anyway.

@MamabearOT I’m all for mental health too ‘cause I love Psychology! Will you be attending Columbia?

@futureOTnyc There’s an optional fieldwork that can be in any specialization the student would like so maybe that would be a welcome option for those who want to widen the scope of experience a bit more. It’s rather unfortunate that some of the alumni you spoke to gave negative feedback but hey there’s always room for improvement! I’m so excited to go to Columbia and will definitely be back on this forum to share my experience! Good luck, anyway!

Hi guys! Anybody here attending Columbia in the Fall? Checking to see if some of my soon-to-be classmates are here too!

Hey guys! Congratulations on getting in Columbia and NYU (and to other schools)! Anyone here decided into attending NYU this fall?

just got waitlisted NYU.

they said that applicants who get accepted have 3 weeks to accept the offer and they can accept waitlisted students up until the first week of when school starts. there is no rank order for waitlisted students.

the waiting game continues...
Does anyone know when the program actually starts. Im asking bc i was waitlisted at NYU but was accepted to another program that begins at the end of May which would overlap with waiting for NYU to get back to me if NYU starts in September. Please let me know! i was unable to find anything on NYU's website about when the program actually begins!

They start during the first week of September!

Hey everyone! For those accepted into NYU's MS/OTD program, has anyone sent in a deposit?? I just sent mine on Saturday but it was weird... first under "degree" it said MS, not MS/OTD. It also asked for a $200 deposit instead of the $500 they mentioned in the acceptance letter. Did anyone else run into this problem??? I've called and sent an email to grad admissions so hopefully they get back to me soon...

Congrats to everyone who got it! I got waitlisted to both NYU and Columbia, but in the letter they phrased it in a way that didn't make me feel bad at all haha! I am aiming for Towson since that is in-state for me, but would like to go to either as a pricey alternative.

To those who have been waitlisted to NYU... has anyone heard back ? 🙁 or know how this process will be like

I was waitlisted and havn't heard anything back yet.
I applied last year and was waitlisted as well.
Last time people started hearing back off the waitlist a a week or so after the deadline in April for all accepted students to respond back.
However last year i heard nothing from them until May when they sent out a "do you want to remain on the waitlist" email to check and see if anyone forgot to email them that they got into another school and didn't want to still be on the waitlist. I felt lucky to have had the forum because at least i had some idea of what was going on (in terms of some people getting accepted off the waitlist while i sat on my bum and waited all the way through summer to finally hear back that they had their full roster and wouldn't be able to offer me spot).

I did however get my waitlist email later in March last year and this time got it in February so Im hoping that means something, although when Ive asked they say none of that makes a difference in decision making.

hope this helps/makes sense

Hi! So I went to the info session yesterday and had a chance to speak to Ginelle. She said that there won't be movement on the waitlist until after the deposit deadline (4/15). The reason why people are still getting accepted while some are getting waitlisted is because they haven't had a chance to go through all remaining applications (which they should finish up this/next week). They're also going to be sending out "official" waitlist emails from the department (rather than general admissions) asking if we would like to stay on the waitlist (which should go out within the next week or so). Hope this helps and hope we hear good news soon!

yes thank you for sharing your experience so far. hopefully it does mean something that both of us heard back from the waitlist in February. I heard back 2/28 so fingers are crossed for everyone on waitlist!

Just got a rejection letter from NYU today and I was on their waitlist 2/22. I’m also on columbias waitlist so I am still trying to remain hopeful.

I was accepted to NYU on Feb 13th (masters) and accepted to Columbia on March 1st (masters). I am very torn between which program I think I will attend. I was accepted to other programs outside of New York which were both doctorates (Boston and Pitt), but I am leaning towards living in NY. It looks like NYU is the more expensive program between NYU and Columbia, if I calculated it correctly?? If anyone has the same tough decision or has any advice please let me know, and congrats everyone!!

I heard from NYU on 2/26 but other people heard back even earlier. So we shall see. I signed up to go to the info session on April 10th so if i get any new info i will share with everyone here!

There are some forums on here i saw of people comparing the programs and other students in your position trying to figure out which one to choose from. Also i would suggest going to the information sessions, you can learn a lot about the curriculum and sometimes even meet professors and other students to get an idea of even just the vibe of the program let alone the course work.

But super awesome you got into a doctorate program i would go for that because who knows what kind of job opportunities could come from having that extra degree. I graduated as a nutrition major from Hunter College where it used to be accredited meaning you could take the test and become an registered dietitian (RD) but now its not accredited and so you have to get a masters degree now to become it and apparently other schools are following in their shadow going from needing a BS to a MS to be accredited. I am hoping its not the case for OT where we will all eventually have to get a doctorate to get work. i could be sharing more than necessary here but just some future food for thought

Sorry to hear about NYU. Definitely remain hopeful till the very end! A friend of mine got accepted from NYU off the waitlist in the summer and the same goes for Columbia. Sometimes one persons misfortunes open doors for others. I have heard people who have accepted their place in a school and have to drop out last minute because loans that they applied for didn't come through. You just never know.

I am also very sorry to hear that about NYU and very surprised that they are already eliminating applicants off the waitlist this early...i was at least expecting for them to wait until the initially admitted students respond around mid April. very upset too hear 🙁

thank you for keeping us posted! i look forward too hearing about the info session 🙂

Congratulations to those accepted and don’t lose hope to those who are still waiting to hear back! I’m sorry to hear about rejections but do stay hopeful! Remember that when one door closes, another opens (in time, of course) 🙂

Anyhoo, does anyone have any insight on possible scholarships and grants available to OT grad students? I’ve only been looking into the NYC DOE OT Scholarship but would like to explore more options.

Thanks!

If money is not an issue, I would definitely choose NYU over Columbia. I toured both schools, and NYU gave me such a good impression. Also the program seems more solid in NYU, and the location of the school is a way better. If cost is the deciding factor, I would go with the cheapest school. At the end you will do same work as other OTs, but the amount of debts will be much higher, and you might pay your loans for the rest of your life.

Hey! I was sort of in your same situation. Got accepted to NYU, Columbia and a cheaper program closer to home but ultimately knew I wanted to live in the city so the choice was really between Columbia and NYU. After doing some research and talking to students from Columbia's program I decided that's where I will be attending this fall 🙂. It's cheaper than NYU and you also finish faster (2 years as opposed to 2 1/2). All of the students I talked to who go to Columbia love it there and only have positive things to say. I didn't really get to talk to a lot of NYU students but from other forums I saw a lot of posts about negative experiences there. For me it ultimately came down to the cost and the time it takes to complete. It doesn't hurt that it's also an Ivy League school 🙂

Hello!
So I'm actually currently in my first year of NYU's MS/OTD program!

Here were my stats:
University: Seton Hall University
Major: Social and Behavioral Sciences
Minors: Psychology and Sociology
Overall GPA: 3.5
Pre-Req GPA: 3.5
GRE: 154 V, 157 Q, 4.0 AW
Extracurriculars: National Society of Collegiate Scholars Member (March 2015 - Present), Service on Saturdays Team Leader (2016), Filipino League at Seton Hall President (15-16) & Events Coordinator (14-15)
LOR: 1 OT, 1 Academic Advisor/Professor, 1 Employer
Observations: 40 skilled nursing facility, 8 hand therapy, 20 homecare

I submitted my application December 15th and got accepted, by some miracle, off waitlist on June 7th so all those still on waitlist, be hopeful! Also make sure you check your e-mails cause they do send out an e-mail asking if you want to remain on the waitlist.

NYU's was my top school and I genuinely love being here. Let me know if anyone has questions!

Is anyone going to NYU commuting or do most people live nearby?

A lot of people commute! Some people live even in central New Jersey. It definitely has its own sets of challenges; its harder to work on group projects (which there are many) but lots of people make it work.

I'm at NYU and I have friends at Columbia; I think they both have different strengths. Columbia is faster for sure; they have A LOT more mental health than we do, but less pediatrics. They have a lot less emphasis on hands (and probably all of orthotics) than NYU and a lot more emphasis on the shoulder than we had (which I don't really understand). I think Columbia has some good opportunities for students to get involved; like they have lab assistant opportunities and NYU doesn't really.

Let me know if you have other questions guys

Hii!! Im glad I came across this and saw that you're a current student! Im going to accept my offer for NYU MS program!

is the first and second semester overwhelming/hard? I see that the program gpa for students must be above a 2.5 while most other schools is 3.0.. is this because it is harder/alot of work? Also, do you or any of your classmates have a parttime job one or two days a week?

Thank you for offering to answer questions 🙂

Is anyone going to NYU commuting or do most people live nearby?

I'm attending NYU and will be commuting from Nutley, New Jersey. It takes approximately an hour of commute. I'm worried about the winter months though
