Hang in there everybody! There's still a few weeks until thanksgiving, plus apparently the AAMC annual meeting is going on until the 15th. Fingers crossed for a flood of IIs after all the adcoms return.

That's the optimism that I need right now. Fingers crossed for the both of us :highfive:

Last year around this time before I had any interviews and I was deep into the spiral of self-loathing that this process induces, I ran into a fellow pre-med acquaintance on campus. Now this guy was doing extremely well and I was feeling pretty embarrassed about the whole situation. He asked me how my applications were going, and for some reason that I will never understand I told him that I was preparing for an upcoming interview at Rosalind Franklin. Why did I lie about having an interview? I don't know. Why did I say it was Rosalind Franklin? Again, I don't know. But this guy ended up telling enough people about my interview that I had to maintain the lie because others would ask me about it. And I repeated this enough times to enough people that I myself began to believe that I had actually attended an interview there. And lo and behold, after a couple of months I did indeed receive a real interview from Rosalind Franklin. Now was this a coincidence? Perhaps. But I choose to think that I believed in that interview so hard that I was actually able to alter my own reality and create an interview where one did not exist before--and maybe you can too!

So ummm... I totally have an II at Rosalind Franklin.

Your move, RFUMS

I think I remember this from the MCAT!

I just wanted to stop by and tell everyone that I just got my first acceptance this morning! (!!!!!!!!!!) I've only had one II this cycle, so I am living proof that it only takes one! Best of luck on the interview front!! May the memes bless you!

I love you guys and I hope you all get into medical school because just based on the fact that you care so much to constantly check this site, I know you all will be amazing doctors .

That being said your boy just went from 0 II to 1 II . There is hope . Be a good person . Try to help others . Make other people happy and remain happy .

I'm still super scared, but I thought I should let you guys know .

Wish you guys the best

Hey everyone , when did u guys submit your secondaries ? I literally just made an SDN account bc reading this forum stressed me out hahaha
I submitted mine mid to late October. Some things are unpredictable. I know someone who submitted in July and has had one interview invite with no rejections yet.

Having a day of complete dejection...moral support would be great. Feeling like I'll hear nothing before Thanksgiving and just bad news after...ugh.

Hey man, don't feel bad. I didn't hear back from any school for a long while and got an interview invite just yesterday. There are still many interview being sent. Keep staying positive 🙂

not sure I can offer much encouragement since I'm in the same boat. But what I do is I tell myself it's okay to have days like today to allow my self to feel what ever I need to feel and then tomorrow try again. Its good you feel this dejection it shows you how important this is to you. And worst case scenario you'll have to remember these feelings so in the next 6-8 months you can use them to remind yourself how important this is as you prepare for another cycle.
But out side of that and the platitudes, bottom line we've worked hard and seems like nothing has come off it. I get that. It's sucky.
But its not over till its over

another day, another rejection. at this school I survived the previous waves of rejections so I held on to some hope...welp :lame:. been feeling a low basal level of hopelessness lately, how do you all cope?

It helps to realize that even having interviews is a great achievement and all it takes is one acceptance to change your life. Emotions are so fickle, man. It's kind of funny when you step back and think about how this process alone is making people so emotional. It's like we're lab rats.

That probably wasn't even coherent. lul

As badly as I want to go into medicine, the only thing that gets me by is knowing that a PhD is also a possibility and that I also have a good job as a backup if higher education is just not a reality for me.

This is maybe not what you want to hear, but from stalking your post history... I think you could have a very successful cycle next year if you apply to more realistic schools. Your list was (IMO) too top heavy, not enough mid tiers. Of the 17 schools you applied to, 13 of them you likely have basically no chance of II or acceptance.

Adding an extra year of clinical and volunteer experience will also be a big help. Try to take some solace in the fact that even if you don't get in this year, you have a very good chance of being able to get into medical school if you play your cards right next cycle.

Ha yea, doesn't feel great to hear that on a down day. But fair enough. Hope to maybe prove you wrong? But also totally preparing for next year.

Does anyone know approximately what amount of IIs are sent out after Thanksgiving, Christmas, and/or New Years? Are most schools pretty much done, or do they still have a decent amount of interviews left (obviously school dependent but note I said most)? I have two interviews (one MD and one DO) and I am very grateful, but I still am anxious to hear back from the 15 schools I haven't heard from yet. My apps were in by August 8, should I assume most of the schools have seen my application and passed on it?

I'm really just curious; I am going to treat my interviews like they're the only ones I'm getting no matter what you all reply.

Dawg, lets do some math. Assuming all interview days or most interview days have near equal number of interviewees and most schools interview till like February/March, we have about 3-3.5 months to get IIs at most schools and there should be plenty of interview spots at these schools since almost all of them interview at least once a week. As you know, some schools close their interview season early (e.g. NYU, Pitt) but a good chunk (esp. state schools) have juicy, sloppy seconds left for us losers. I'm getting hungry for thanksgiving if you can't tell.

Lol thanks man, happy early turkey day!

Also, I would like to say that interviews offered : interview spots is not 1:1. People decline IIs so IIs > IS. I'm pretty sure MSAR and other data banks only list IS, not total IIs.

I would second this due to the MSAR phrasing "Interviewed" as this likely means the # of people who actually went through the process as you're saying.

Let's say a school interviews from September through February and let's say that the same proportion of applicants are interviewed in each of those months. Six months means almost 17% interviewed in each month. Now let's say that invites go out 4 weeks before the range of dates offered for the interview. That would mean that the last invites would go out in mid -January and by now, mid-November, there would be Dec, Jan and Feb invites still to go out or about 50% of invites that have not yet gone out. In fact, if you factor in those who will turn down an offer because they already have a better offer of admission, it might be more than 50% of ii are yet to be issued.

The season isn't over by a long shot but if you haven't received even one offer by next Wednesday at 11:59 pm, you should spend the long weekend thinking about what you might do in 2017-2018 if this cycle does not yield at least one offer of admission. The Thanksgiving rule doesn't mean you won't get into medical school this cycle but it is the point at which you should start making contingency plans. (In contrast to the people who are ready to make contingency plans in mid-September because they haven't received an ii at that point.)

Well you do have one interview invite so far. Prepare well for that. It only takes one.
Totally true, and I plan to. Thank you 🙂

What would you say to people who have one interview but nothing else? Obviously I'm making contingency plans, but does having one interview before Thanksgiving change anything to this rule?

It means your app can float. There are most likely no red flags and it is competitive.

I have no problem being the sloppy seconds of my state school that gets interviewed and somehow accepted in March

Anyone else sitting on 0-1 IIs with no rejections? What does it mean...

For those of you who are starting to sweat, it's still not too late to get some apps into DO schools, kids! Just skip the ones that require DO LORs.
