I have an interview from drexel, but not integrated. How is this typically handled? I have heard you should not apply to >1 program at a single place. I have another program where you apply adult, but if selected for interview you tell them of your interest in child. I did that, and the coordinator adjusted the schedule for that.

I applied for child integrated track and regular and places that have offered me child have either said I could rank the child track or both if I want or not mentioned it at all. Drexel offered me regular interview, not child track even though I applied both.

You should not apply to multiple specialties at a single place (though people do!). However you should absolutely apply to all the individual tracks in a program if you - for example community, research, integrated child etc if that floats your boat. One exception to the not applying to multiple specialties is if you are applying to combined programs (e.g. peds/psych, neuro/psych, IM/Psych, FM/Psych) - since there are so few of these programs it is encouraged and perfectly acceptable to apply to the combined program and one or both the composite specialties at the same institution. Since they know you are interested in both, it won't be a ding against you.

In all seriousness, I sent out a few (with some success) and wrote 3 paragraphs:
1) Acknowledgement of the many applications they have to read and the high quality of the applicants
2) Summary of what I have done since applications opened
3) 3 sentences on why I want to attend their program

Based on Charting Outcomes 2016 it looks like the point of diminishing returns for psych interviews is at about 8 interviews, i.e. you reach more than 90% chance of matching with 8 interviews, after which any additional interviews don't really improve your chances much. This is of course assuming that all or most of these interviews are in your target range of competitiveness and you rank all of them.

Also, as has been brought up several times in this thread, remember that only a little over 10% of invites are sent before October 1st, about half of invites is sent in October (and we'll only be mid-October on Monday), and almost 40% of invites are sent *after* October.

My personal hypothesis about the current slowing down is that the programs first quickly sent invites to top of the crop applicants using whatever filters they used (Step scores, clinical grades, selected schools, AOA, PhD, whatever) and are now searching for "diamonds in the rough" among the rest, which takes careful reading of letters etc. - in other words, takes time.

Tl, dr: I'm confident we'll be getting more invites, even if slower; but you are probably fine with 8 interviews regardless.

For DOs, the tipping point seems to be about 9 interviews. Beyond that it's pretty meh.

As another example, I sent out one email around this time last year. It was to a place where I have family ties to the geography and I don't think my email was longer than three sentences. Something like "I'm xxx, I know you're busy, I have family there and I'm sincerely interested in your program." It worked.

A lot of such places have filled their slots. Additional interviews will come from cancellations.

Personally I'd send to both PD and program coordinator in same email.

For people cancelling interviews through ERAS or some other self scheduler, did you also email the programs to tell them? I've cancelled a bunch the past couple weeks and withdrew my application in ERAS for all of them, but didn't even think to email. They were all >2 months in advance of the scheduled interview date. Should I send an awkward email now stating that I cancelled and withdrew my application two weeks ago?

I was told that it's in good form to send an email to the coordinator when you cancel an interview. It doesn't have to be a lengthy one though.

"Dear [NAME],

I am writing to let you know that I had to cancel my interview previously scheduled for [DATE] due to scheduling conflicts/financial considerations/whatever and will be withdrawing my application. Thank you again for the opportunity and for all your hard work during interview season.

This letter of interest is exclusively for AMGs, correct? I am guessing that for an IMG this would be a pretentious move that woukd guarantee the round file.

In what circumstances is it acceptable for an IMG to initiate contact? Would any of these 3 qualify?
A) if I worked there previously in a different dept (while unusual, it is true in my case--and the school lost the contract years ago so the dept is no longer there).
B) the program requested a supplemental and I answered three weeks ago.
C)If I think I got waitlisted (email says no interview at this time but keeping application active.)

These are lower tier programs. I know I shouldn't annoy my dream picks (only did 3 middle).

I have a good friend with only a handful of interviews despite her/his stellar step 1 & 2 scores (~250), fine personal statement, & likely strong LORs. (S)he applied to 20+ programs, but most are in geographic regions other than where (s)he is right now (though most not too far). Is the geographic location what is holding her back, because I can't understand why (s)he isn't getting IIs & I have been. (S)he has a good spread of safety, mid-tier, & top tier programs applied to.

I know this question gets asked a whole lot, but I'm starting to get concerned for her/him. I can't see any reason for lack of IIs besides maybe geographic location. I recommended (s)he send some love letters, which is being done today.

I'm also just a fellow M4 so take it with a grain of salt but this process has taught me that scores aren't everything. My experience has been that it really appears to me that programs want to find a good fit for them (and rightfully so). Geography did play a role in my invite pool (my medical school is in Midwest and almost all of my invites are from Midwest. I haven't updated the sheet) but even then II's sometimes came from places I did not expect and vice versa. I feel as though once you show certain amount of academic capacity everything else is a fair game and that they'd look at the strength of the LORs, consistent academic performance in med school, research experience, how the PS is (not just that it's fine generally but how much do they find it interesting for them), volunteer activities that stand out, hobbies (surprisingly), etc. These are all the different aspects of my applications that several PDs have pointed out so far and sometimes what they find appealing to them don't overlap. I have similar board scores as your friend but rarely did I ever get the impression that they were most impressed by how I did on Steps.

There are also obvious factors that could cause some resistance like IMG vs. AMG vs. DO status (I'm a DO myself so I can't deny that I felt some reluctance), any course failure, gaps in medical school, etc.

(FWIW I'm also an M4) I don't think it would hurt to add some low-tier and safety programs at this point. I don't know how much it'd help but you never know until you try. Programs do say on their website that they accept applications until Nov-Dec after all. If you're going to add, better now than any time later. Maybe also speak with an advisor at your school or past grads that you know well and see if you need to have a backup strategy? (It's hard to give a good advice without knowing the details about your application)

If you applied to a lot of schools that you think you have a realistic shot at, I think interest emails would be helpful especially if you have some ties to the program/region that aren't evident in your application.

Same. I think branding is important as well or atleast illustrating a consistent theme. It makes it easy to sell yourself. Although I do find it a little harder to convince programs that are not as community based that I am still interested, since my app illustrates a community focus.

That might be true too. Though my app was community focused and I was able to get academic programs. Though, I also mentioned wanting to work on community psych related projects (not research, I hate research). I think the academics programs I received interviews, also had huge opportunities available for community psych. Examples being Yale, Brigham, and UTSW.

I agree. I am a DO with 'meh' stats and I have received some invites from places that SDN makes it sound like are full of 265+ USMLE scorers. It's simply not the case. Once you show a baseline level of competence, it's anybody's game.

As another example, I sent out one email around this time last year. It was to a place where I have family ties to the geography and I don't think my email was longer than three sentences. Something like "I'm xxx, I know you're busy, I have family there and I'm sincerely interested in your program." It worked.

A lot of such places have filled their slots. Additional interviews will come from cancellations.

Yea this is most likely the case. I'm into double digits in IIs without a single piece of news this week. More than half came in September. Which is why I've cancelled some invites and will be cancelling a few more in the next days/weeks. No reason to take more than 10-12 imo.

Not sure. While 50% of invites may remain according to the data, I do get the sense that for some of the big academic psych programs, we are down to waitlists. Correct me if I am wrong.
