**Official 2022 Ortho PASS/Interviews/Match/Non-Match**

What’s the best way to find out who our co-residents are gonna be?

So I am unsure of the appropriate protocol:
Did you guys send some sort of gift to your recommenders after the match? Or just a thank you note informing them about the result?

Anyone hear from UNLV or Georgia regarding post match? Or know what the expected timeline/protocol is?

Congratulations to all who received admission into a program. To those who did not, best of luck in receiving news in the coming days regarding an available position.

As someone who failed to match in previous cycles, I know the pain of not matching. While I was fortunate to match this year, I am aware of several mistakes I made in previous cycles. I was fortunate to learn and grow from these mistakes, as well as, to use my time to become a better applicant year after year. If anyone would like to talk with me about options after failing to match, advice for next cycle, etc, please DM me. I do not know everything, but I can tell you things from my own experience in hopes of helping you next cycle.

Hi everyone, unfortunately did not get into an orthodontics program this year. Ultimately, my end goal is still orthodontics. I have two options for next year, both being 1 year GPR programs. Program 1 has an orthodontics department and specialists that rotate through. Program 2 is overall a better program but does not have an orthodontics department or any specialists that rotate through. I was wondering if anyone had any insight pertaining to this or any advice regarding which program would be a better choice for next year with the end goal of orthodontics in mind. Thank you!!

Hi Doctors,

Do you know if there is any loan for the orthodontic residency program at Georgia, Hudson for (non-citizens)?

And how to apply for private loans?

Thanks

Hi there, this is just my humble opinion from the information you provided... if I were you, I would choose program 1 that has the orthodontics department. From your description, it seems like program 2 is a better program in terms of training general dentists with better skills. But your goal is still orthodontics, right? I think by being in program 1 for an additional year, talking to, shadowing at (whenever you have the time), and building a good relationship with the ortho department at program 1, you can at least have a better shot at matching with the ortho program at program 1. Also, I do not think ortho programs care (or even know) which GPR program is better. (I could be wrong though.) By choosing program 1 and getting to know the ortho residents and faculty there, you will at least get a better shot with that ortho program when you apply in the future.

Has anyone completed a ortho fellowship/internship and was it beneficial ? Or would working for a year and reapplying be a better option ?

You would need to have a cosigner for private loans (if you are not a citizen/permanent resident). Once you have a cosigner the process is pretty straightforward, call the bank and they will send you and your cosigner a form. Once filled, they will give you options for interest rates, you finalize your choice sign the loan deeds and the bank pays directly to school.
What bank will give you that much money?

I completed an internship and found it very beneficial. It allowed me to get a better understanding of orthodontic philosophies, and helped strengthen my application. I was offered positions at multiple schools, where I failed to get any offers last year.

I completed a 6-month orthodontic internship (after not matching in the 2021 cycle) and then matched in the 2022 cycle. Feel free to reach out if you have additional questions!

Anyone got post-match invites from Georgia?

I am a self-admitted lurker on SDN and have found it beneficial in preparation for applications and interviews. I want to share my journey to give hope to future orthodontists!

Orthodontic residency: Tufts
Dental school: Tufts
GPA: 3.21
Rank: 103/171
GRE: VR 163 / QR 160 / AW 5.0

I graduated from dental school with no intention of specializing (proof in my grades/rank). I attended dental school on the Health Professions Scholarship Program (ie military scholarship) so upon graduation I commissioned as a dental officer in the Navy and served for 5 years. While I was in the Navy, I was always curious about other specialties but it wasn't until my last two years that I had the opportunity to learn more about orthodontics. I shadowed an orthodontist and treated a few of my own limited cases (under the supervision of an orthodontist, of course). I had good relationships with my bosses who could write me strong letters of recommendation. I knew I didn't have a strong application (grades/rank, lack of research), but I had done the best I could at that point in time and decided to throw my hat in the ring. I figured even if I didn't get in, I had at least established an expressed interest to potential residency programs if/when I reapplied.

I received one interview (UIC) and then didn't match. I was disappointed but not surprised. I had been previously advised to do an orthodontic internship so I applied to all the internship programs I could find. I received one interview and was accepted to the orthodontic preceptorship program at UCSF. I did a 6-month preceptorship that involved attending virtual classes with the 1st year residents, an in-person wire bending class, and a small research project. In addition to the preceptorship, I shadowed at a local orthodontist's office and networked with as many people in the orthodontic field as possible (ie mostly new graduates and current residents). I also volunteered for other community organizations that supported non-dental causes I believed in.

When it came time to reapply, I had as many people possible critique my CV and personal statement. I increased the number of programs I applied to from about 20 to 30. And then I waited and followed this forum. I received interviews at University of Pacific, Albert Einstein, Rutgers, Montefiore, NYU and Tufts.

I share my story with the hope that it inspires those who want to pursue orthodontics but may be afraid because they don't have the grades/rank or been out of school for a while.

Hi! if anyone has received an interview from Georgia school of orthodontics and would like to connect please inbox me. Thanks!

Hey everyone,
I am working on filling out my application right now. I'm not sure if I should include experiences from dental school only or if I should go back and list everything from undergrad as well. Those that have applied before, what did you do and what do you think is necessary? Thanks!

Since we are into the drill for next year's cycle, thought of starting the thread!
