Anyone willing to swap UNC dates? I’m on 10/24 currently but need 10/23 to make clinic rotations work. Please DM if you might be able to help! Thank you 🙏
Has UNC sent our interview confirmations? They only called to ask which date but I don’t see an email confirming

So many people asked about interview questions. I was curious too.. today is Saturday and raining and yes I like the rain, but don't wanna get sick now.. so plans to go out got ruined.

so I did some searching and saw an old thread in 2007.. I will quote the questions they received here.

Here's a gem:

"If you had to do your Match List today, what would you do?"

(By the way, that's sort of not a 'legal' question to ask. Those sorts of questions are what pisses me off about Match.)

Yeah

Why did you choose orthodontics?
When did you become interested in orthodontics
Does your GPA and Rank accurately describe your ability?
Why did you pick our program?
If you were a program director what would you include in an ortho program?
If you dont get into ortho this year, what will you do?
Tell me about ______ on your CV.
All the students here all have high grades and board scores, what sets you apart from them and why should we accept you?
Where do you see yourself in 10-15 years?
Are you doing orthodontics for the money?

1. So how do you like our weather up here?
2. Now that's a nice suit, where did you get it?
3. So how did you enjoy our spread? Were the bagels fresh?
4. Do you have any questions for me that weren't answered by us or our residents and could quite possible cause us to look at you in a more negative light depending on if the question was already addressed earlier or sounds prefabricated enough that we can see what a shallow and mundane personality you could possibly be?
5. So would you like to join our program?

a classmate of mine received the following question/statement during an interview at a "top" ortho program: "Describe the process of saponification." btw, bending wires sucks! j/k

The most annoying question I got in any interview: "Well, your city of _____________ sure is far away from our residency program in ___________. Are you sure your willing to relocate so far away from home?"

Of course I wouldn't spend 800 bucks on a hotel room, plane flight, rental car, food and cheap suit if I didn't have plans of relocating. That is simply obnoxious. People relocate all the time.

I got a ton of obnoxious questions, although I really got nothing orthodontic related. Of course, if you have done research make sure that you know everything about it and can discuss it ad nauseum, because you will have to.

Some schools ask "obnoxious" or strange questions because they want to see what kind of person you realy are (and sometimes how you respond under pressure). I think these are best questions to ask because it gets the interviewees away from their rehearsed, rubber stamp answers. Anyone can prepare an answer that sounds impressive, but predetermined answers often appear as such.

The best thing to do is just be yourself and be honest. Most programs appreciate the honesty and respect someone that can say they don't know the answer to a question (or have never thought about the answer to a given question).

in reference to the saponification question

also, watch out at baylor - Dr. White will ask you about everything BUT teeth or your career goals or anything else. classical composers, current but obscure events, all kinds of fun stuff!

Hello! Is there any chance that NOVA will send more invites during the cycle? Since they did different batches last year

Hey guys! Hope you guys are enjoying the interview process - such an exciting time! My name is Stephen and I am a first-year resident right now so I know what you guys are going through haha Last year during interviews, I compiled a list of questions I received so that I could use the list to prepare for subsequent interviews. I want to share that list with you guys! There were some schools that made me sign a document that said I would not share their questions - so those questions are not included on this list. I hope someone finds this useful. Feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any questions about the interview process or applying!

  • What part of a sandwich would you be and why? Got this from a staff member lol
  • Do you cook? What do you cook? Another question from a staff member haha
  • Why this school? Couldn’t you find that at many schools?
  • What has been your biggest accomplishment?
  • If you could highlight anything on your cv, what would it be? What would you erase from your application?
  • Tell me about a time when you handled a difficult situation.
  • Tell two specific qualities that make a good orthodontist
  • Tell me about your research
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • What do you do when you are overly stressed?
  • Tell about a time when your beliefs changed about something?
  • Do you work better in groups or alone?
  • Tell me a misconception that people often have about you.
  • What was your favorite class in college and why?
  • Tell me about a time when you worked in a group
  • Tell me what leadership means and give me and example of your leadership
  • Tell me about your research.
  • What orthodontic literature have you recently read?
  • Tell me about your head TA teaching position
  • Tell me about a difficult time in your life and how you overcame it?
  • What things are you looking for in an orthodontic residency?
  • Do you speak Spanish? What percentage of your patients at the University of Utah speak Spanish?
  • What kind of ortho experience did you get at the University of Utah?
  • Why Ortho?
  • Why you?
  • Why this school?
  • What is something outside of dentistry where you show attention to detail?
  • Tell me about the dental drill that you built? (talked about this on my app)
  • Tell me about your research
  • How many schools did you apply to and how many interviews did you get? (got this question at so many schools)
  • What are you looking for in an orthodontic program?
  • Why do you want to come to this school?
  • If you were dental school dean for a week, what would you do and why?
  • Tell me about your research
  • Why orthodontics?
  • If you were to do a specialty outside of orthodontics, what would you do?
  • What is your least favorite specialty in dentistry and why?
  • What is on your bucket list?
  • What are you looking for in a residency program?
  • How many schools did you apply to and how many interviews?
  • Tell me about your research?
  • Tell me about yourself
  • What is your idea of perfection?
  • What were the last three books that you read? (This was not asked but apparently this was asked by the interviewer the previous year)
  • Why orthodontics?
  • What has doing renovations (talked about doing renovations in my app) taught you about doing dentistry?
  • Tell me about your research
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • Tell me about your research
  • What do you like to do in your free time?
  • What is the most difficult thing that you have done and how did you overcome it?
  • Tell me about your research
  • What would you add to the program here?
  • What characteristics make a good orthodontist?
  • What was your biggest contribution to your class in dental school? How did you make that contribution?
  • What do you feel is the most impressive thing on your application?
  • Tell me about the business and dentistry club that you were president of?
  • What other fields of dentistry are you interested in?
  • What questions do you have for me?
  • What do you friends find most annoying about you? (Probably the toughest question I got on the interview trail haha my advice would be to keep the tone of your answer light.)
  • If you were a tooth, which would you be and why? (With these types of questions, try to show your personality! My response to this question was, "any primary tooth, because I'm more bulbous than normal haha)
  • What kind of culture are you looking for in residency?
  • Tell me about a time when you disagreed with a superior, what did you do?
  • Are you Mormon? (got this question a couple times, being from Utah haha I didn’t get the impression that they were being disrespectful – they just wanted to get to know me)
  • Tell me about the lessons you learned on your Mormon mission?
  • Your wife came to the social last night, what other interviews did she go to?
  • Tell me about an experience that changed you significantly.
  • Tell me about some of your undergraduate research. What kind of processes did you use to purify your samples in the organic chemistry lab you worked in? After I told him about column chromatography, he asked me how column chromatography separated the products that I had (separates products by polarity).
  • Why should we accept you over your friend from your school? (I wasn’t asked this question, but some of my buddies were) My advice for this question would be to not take the bait! Talk positively of your friends and the other applicants and sell your own strengths! They don’t want someone in their residency that will tear others down, and they are seeing if you would do this during this question.
  • If you had to accept one of the other applicants here outside of yourself, who would you select and why? (I didn’t get this question, but some friends did)
Good luck with interviews this cycle - you guys will do great!

Checking this forum is becoming emotionally painful.
Don't give up hope! I had a school reach out like a whole week after it was posted here (I assume because other students couldn't attend that interview). I think schedules are starting to fill up too, so overlapping dates are being rejected possibly. Just because it's posted here doesn't mean it's for sure over!

Thank you for giving us a glimmer of hope! Some of us are struggling out here lol

Hello! I’m looking to switch with someone who has a 10/16 interview date for Columbia! Currently have a 10/17 afternoon slot.

For the record, swapping and changing dates basically indicates to the school that they aren’t the priority for you. That message gets communicated up the chain and is not looked upon favorably by PDs. Not saying it’s a death sentence, but it doesn’t look great.

^I think it's not too big of an issue, especially if you're polite in your communication/requests to swap dates and already have even prepared a swap with another candidate. Since you're still prioritizing going to that program's interview and social (definitely try going to the social even if it's optional)

How important is the social? Obviously I want to attend all socials if I can. I got an interview invite from one of my top choices, but I cannot make it to the social because I have another interview for a different program on that day. Would not attending the social be a death sentence? Do you advise me to attend the social and turn down the other interview? I wonder if there are any applicants who matched to a program without going to the social.

I didn't really get a choice for my interview time at columbia. The only spots available on NMS were for that day.

Depends on the program. Some schools, optional means mandatory. Others, it’s truly optional. You want as much exposure as possible

How would I find out? Should I reach out to one of the residents who is coordinating the social and ask for an honest opinion about missing the social for another program's interview? I don't want to compromise any chances by saying the wrong thing...it scares me haha..

I would not ask anyone associated with the program, you do not want to say the wrong thing haha. It’s a really hard call, just go with your conscience. It’s impossible to know…and you want to maximize your chances by going to as many interviews as possible. It’s so hard 😣

I only know of one school where it was a mandatory social, and they definitely clearly stated it was mandatory (one of the Texas schools but I forgot which one). Socials in general are fairly optional, but if you can go DEFINITELY try to go. Once you're given an interview, you are academically qualified to get into each program. So now the main question I feel most programs are looking for is "will this applicant be a great addition to our team / do I vibe will with them / can I see myself working with them for the next 2-3 years?) If you don't go you are missing out on a big chance to get to know the residents and faculty in a more relaxed setting and making that great impression. The interview day itself also offers this but in a much more rigidly structured environment where you might not get as much time to talk to each resident/faculty.

I don't think my UAB interview is the second wave. Probably one of interviewees cannot attend.

I did a mock interview with a current ortho resident from a program. One of the questions he asked me (which was one he was asked apparently on his interview journey) was "Would you still go to an interview if you couldn't attend the social?" We talked about it after and he said he felt the social is a vital part of the interview process and said that when he is on the opposite side (He's a student interviewer on the admissions committee at his program) they did not look at candidates favorably if they missed the social.

Now that's just one person's opinion, so take it with a grain of salt, but I'm sure some programs have that opinion about it and others don't care.
