So many people asked about interview questions. I was curious too.. today is Saturday and raining and yes I like the rain, but don't wanna get sick now.. so plans to go out got ruined.

Of course I wouldn't spend 800 bucks on a hotel room, plane flight, rental car, food and cheap suit if I didn't have plans of relocating. That is simply obnoxious. People relocate all the time.

I got a ton of obnoxious questions, although I really got nothing orthodontic related. Of course, if you have done research make sure that you know everything about it and can discuss it ad nauseum, because you will have to.

I think these are best questions to ask because it gets the interviewees away from their rehearsed, rubber stamp answers. Anyone can prepare an answer that sounds impressive, but predetermined answers often appear as such.

The best thing to do is just be yourself and be honest. Most programs appreciate the honesty and respect someone that can say they don't know the answer to a question (or have never thought about the answer to a given question).

  • Tell me about a time when you disagreed with a superior, what did you do?
  • Are you Mormon? (got this question a couple times, being from Utah haha I didn’t get the impression that they were being disrespectful – they just wanted to get to know me)
  • Tell me about the lessons you learned on your Mormon mission?
  • Your wife came to the social last night, what other interviews did she go to?
  • Tell me about an experience that changed you significantly.
  • Tell me about some of your undergraduate research. What kind of processes did you use to purify your samples in the organic chemistry lab you worked in? After I told him about column chromatography, he asked me how column chromatography separated the products that I had (separates products by polarity).
  • Why should we accept you over your friend from your school? (I wasn’t asked this question, but some of my buddies were) My advice for this question would be to not take the bait! Talk positively of your friends and the other applicants and sell your own strengths! They don’t want someone in their residency that will tear others down, and they are seeing if you would do this during this question.
  • If you had to accept one of the other applicants here outside of yourself, who would you select and why? (I didn’t get this question, but some friends did)

I got a call too and they talked about the dates. He said 10/23 was already full and put me down for 10/24 for now. I didnt get an email confirmation or anything, it’s all mostly been through phone call.

Don't give up hope! I had a school reach out like a whole week after it was posted here (I assume because other students couldn't attend that interview). I think schedules are starting to fill up too, so overlapping dates are being rejected possibly. Just because it's posted here doesn't mean it's for sure over!

Hello! I’m looking to switch with someone who has a 10/16 interview date for Columbia! Currently have a 10/17 afternoon slot.
 
For the record, swapping and changing dates basically indicates to the school that they aren’t the priority for you. That message gets communicated up the chain and is not looked upon favorably by PDs. Not saying it’s a death sentence, but it doesn’t look great.
 
^I think it's not too big of an issue, especially if you're polite in your communication/requests to swap dates and already have even prepared a swap with another candidate. Since you're still prioritizing going to that program's interview and social (definitely try going to the social even if it's optional)

How important is the social? Obviously I want to attend all socials if I can. I got an interview invite from one of my top choices, but I cannot make it to the social because I have another interview for a different program on that day. Would not attending the social be a death sentence? Do you advise me to attend the social and turn down the other interview? I wonder if there are any applicants who matched to a program without going to the social.

I didn't really get a choice for my interview time at columbia. The only spots available on NMS were for that day.

Depends on the program. Some schools, optional means mandatory. Others, it’s truly optional. You want as much exposure as possible

How would I find out? Should I reach out to one of the residents who is coordinating the social and ask for an honest opinion about missing the social for another program's interview? I don't want to compromise any chances by saying the wrong thing...it scares me haha..

I would not ask anyone associated with the program, you do not want to say the wrong thing haha. It’s a really hard call, just go with your conscience. It’s impossible to know…and you want to maximize your chances by going to as many interviews as possible. It’s so hard 😣
 
I only know of one school where it was a mandatory social, and they definitely clearly stated it was mandatory (one of the Texas schools but I forgot which one). Socials in general are fairly optional, but if you can go DEFINITELY try to go. Once you're given an interview, you are academically qualified to get into each program. So now the main question I feel most programs are looking for is "will this applicant be a great addition to our team / do I vibe will with them / can I see myself working with them for the next 2-3 years?) If you don't go you are missing out on a big chance to get to know the residents and faculty in a more relaxed setting and making that great impression. The interview day itself also offers this but in a much more rigidly structured environment where you might not get as much time to talk to each resident/faculty.
 
I don't think my UAB interview is the second wave. Probably one of interviewees cannot attend.

How important is the social? Obviously I want to attend all socials if I can. I got an interview invite from one of my top choices, but I cannot make it to the social because I have another interview for a different program on that day. Would not attending the social be a death sentence? Do you advise me to attend the social and turn down the other interview? I wonder if there are any applicants who matched to a program without going to the social.

I did a mock interview with a current ortho resident from a program. One of the questions he asked me (which was one he was asked apparently on his interview journey) was "Would you still go to an interview if you couldn't attend the social?" We talked about it after and he said he felt the social is a vital part of the interview process and said that when he is on the opposite side (He's a student interviewer on the admissions committee at his program) they did not look at candidates favorably if they missed the social.

Now that's just one person's opinion, so take it with a grain of salt, but I'm sure some programs have that opinion about it and others don't care.
