Official AADSAS Q&A Thread 2020-2021

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Personally I created a separate entry for each office precisely because of the problem you mentioned-- separate contact info for each office. It's probably easier for adcoms to read the experiences separated apart into short descriptions vs conglomerated all together. Just my 2 cents

Agree with zdoq separate the experiences. And you should write at least one sentence per office. If you legitimately learned nothing from 3 of the offices (which I find hard to believe if you dig deep), then how about take 3 things you learned from the office where you learned something and apply those across the 3 other offices. No one is going to know the difference or care tbh in interviews, and it makes your app look cleaner.

I just got my spring grades which came out well and I was wondering whether I should resend my transcript before submitting my app. AADSAS already received my transcript w/o spring grades a few weeks ago so would sending a new transcript negatively affect my GPA verification process? I'm not sure whether to submit my app before they receive the transcript or waiting for about a week to make sure they've received it. Would anyone know how to go about this?

You might consider calling AADSAS to get a definitive answer, but my guess is if you’re willing to wait on sending your new transcript you could, but that could slow your submission up to two weeks (one week to send and receive the transcript, one week to verify the last part of your transcript). How much of a bump in sGPA did you get? Were you finishing prerequisite classes? Is your app complete and ready to send now or will you still be finishing for awhile?

I took Cell Bio and Physics III among other classes this quarter and I haven't really gotten the chance to calculate my sGPA but I expect it will give a nice bump because I received a C+ in physics when I took it at a cc during high school. I will probably take 3-4 more days after June 16 to submit my app and another extra few days for the schools that require more writing.

If I do send a new transcript though, should I submit my app before it's confirmed that they've received it? Or would it confuse AADSAS during the GPA verification process because they suddenly get a different transcript?

I would guess it would need to first be received, then re-verified, then last you would submit your app in order for your new grades to show up on your app when you apply to schools.

Where should publications go? I've seen people mention putting it under Achievements as an "Honor" as well as under Experiences with the associated research. I have 5 papers which won't fit when cited into one experience section, but calling them honors feels strange as well.

Also, for course subjects should we select the closest match for content or department name? E.g. organic chemistry here is considered CHEM 1112 rather than being its own department so I've put it under Chemistry rather than Organic Chemistry.
This was answered earlier in the thread:

Hello!
I was wondering where I would put abstracts/ research publications/ research presentations I have authored in on the dent app? Is it considered an achievement?
Thank you !
Artist said: Yes - I'd put them under achievements.

And to answer your second part, yes looks like you did it right. The rule of thumb is that you categorize it based on the way it is categorized on your transcript.

If my school doesn't send out committee letters, do I need 2 or 3 letters of recommendation from professors?

If I submitted my application at midnight, what is the average wait time to hear back?

I think most schools have a minimum of 2, but prefer 3 LORs from professors and then the last one from a dentist. I'd look at the schools you're applying to and try and figure out the best combo of letters. Also I'd ask ASAP if you haven't already because you want to give your writers adequate time (like 2mo), and the later you ask, the later they write and send it, and the later your app is marked complete.

Varies by school, and with COVID, no one really knows how this cycle will go. At minimum, though, AADSAS needs to verify your transcript and calculate your GPAs, so it can be 2-3 weeks or even sometimes 4-6 weeks after submission before schools will ever receive your app.

Thank you! I sent out my requests in June to 3 professors. Some schools have listed don their site that they only require 2 so I was struggling to choose 2/3.

This question is for anyone who has applied in the past:
How long did it take you to finish your AADSAS application? Is it something that takes a long time or can it be done quicker if you set aside 3-4 days to fill it out? This is assuming that your transcript and LORs are in and you only have to work on your personal statement and everything else.

This is a question only you can answer. I had my letters, personal statement, and transcripts ready before the app opened and they were processed at aadsas within two weeks. The rest of the app did not take much time probably a few days of diligent work.

Ok so if 1 of my grades is going through an appeal process, should I request my transcript now and send the updated version later? I don't want any delays for little, avoidable things.

What is the nature of the appeal? If it’s something minor then you can send your transcript now, if it’s major like fixing a failing prerequisite course then you better wait.

I was in college for 6 academic years due to transferring. How should I indicate my academic status i.e. freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior? AADSAS says that courses taken outside of typical academic statuses should be indicated as freshman. However, their help guide says that students that take 5 years should mark their 5th year as senior.

I received college credit for a Calculus I course. I then retook that course for no credit though my court grade is indicated as 0A-, indicating my grade but also that I did not receive credit for this retake. How should I enter this into my course entry? The course also indicates 4 credit hours however these were not factored into my term's total credit hours.

Dat on July 2nd, should I submit or wait for my score? First time applying, so kind of lost.

My guess is- the years before transferring should all be marked as freshman. Then the rest of the years should be labeled as usual.

You would enter both attempts, one with the first grade and the credits received and then the A- for the second grade with 0 credits received is my guess.

This may be hard to answer, but I am applying with 3.6 cgpa, 3.4 sgpa 20AA/TS. But recently found out I had to report a CC anatomy class I took when I was in high school. Unfortunately I got a C in the class. I’m just wondering how much this will affect my chances? I’m pretty sure it will calculate into my undergraduate GPA which will bring it down :/.

And you guessed correct. I contacted the AADSAS and this is what they said to do.

AADSAS's live chat personnel instructed me to label anything after 90 credits as senior. So my transcript entry would be freshman-sophomore-junior-senior-senior-senior for 6 years total.

Do schools look down on your application if they see you wrote the DAT 3 times?

That’s shouldn’t affect your chances too much. If anybody asks about it in an interview just explain that you took it in high school and explain why you received a C (wasn’t motivated to go to dental school yet perhaps?).

Yes. The more times you take it the more likely that adcoms will look on your app unfavorably. They don’t want to take a chance on someone who couldn’t hack it 4 times in a row or more. I’ve seen people get in having taken it 3 times, but that’s only when they showed a vast improvement.

Thoughts on including that I attended "Pre-Dental Days" on AADSAS? I attended two events hosted by my instate school and another at the next closest school in a different state. Would including these experiences look bad to other schools I am applying to?

Up to you, your application won't be considered complete until they're in, so it doesn't really matter much either way.

You can include it, it shows commitment and interest in the field.

In which category would the "deans list" fall under? Awards, Honors, or Scholarships?

I think I put it under Honors (since it's like an Honor List) because I think Awards are like "Best Undergraduate Researcher" or something, but I don't think you could really go wrong either way.
Thanks! And would I list all of the years as just one achievement?
Yes, consolidate them down. Like "Dean's list, Fall 2018-Spring 2020"

My college in undergrad combined General Chemistry 1 & 2 (with lab) into a one semester course.
1. When matching prerequisites, do I just input my chemistry course twice?
2. Will schools give me any trouble because of this?

The Colorado dental school supplemental fee says $80 on the website but the AADSAS page for them says $85, and then the link takes me to a page where it is $80. Should we wait to get an email or go ahead and pay it from the link they provided on AADSAS?

Issue: Reviewing my application, I realized some mistakes (primarily a few ‘Experiences’ section dates) were incurred and looked into amending these simple mistakes after having submitted my application for verification recently, however, the AADSAS help desk relayed to me that I could no longer edit these minor typos after submission.

Question: What should be done in this instance?

Shouldn’t matter either way. Some schools have specific instructions, check the website. Or you could send the office collecting the payments an email asking which they prefer, if you’re concerned about it.

What specifically were the mistakes? If they were minor, like you started in june instead of july or included 10 extra hours in your community service by mistake or something, then don’t worry about it. Adcoms should understand these are largely best guess.

1. No, input it once. Units should reflect this.
2. No, just make sure you have the syllabus from that class saved.

You already asked this on the class specific thread and got your answer.

This is why it's extremely important for applications to completely and thoroughly look through their app because yes, you are not allowed to make ANY changes to anything you've already submitted. People are so hyped about submitting their application the day it's open, but you had a few weeks to look all of this over before submission became available, so there shouldn't be any typos!
What you can now do is email each school individually and tell them what's correct. They may add it to your application file.

you should be habitually placid if they are only minor typos

Yeah I agree with macsak. Do not email anyone about your typos! Odds are no one is going to notice them so sweep them under the rug or embrace them as truth in my opinion!

Like you hinted at in your previous post, they were mostly errors in start/end dates. I listed contact information for all experiences, so it shouldn’t be an immeasurable blunder on my part (assuming they actually email or call to check with these contacts). Thank you for the reply!

The amount of experiences I listed is a considerable amount, but regardless I should have looked into each of them individually before submitting—if they ask about these mistakes, I’ll be more than transparent with the adcoms (as long as they ask...).

Is there a stat on how many people usually submit their application at midnight?
No. And it doesn’t matter. As long as you submit your app and complete your supplementals in the first few weeks, you will be among the first applications reviewed by programs and selected for interview.

Hi Guys, my dad had a stroke in my last semester of school and as a result my GPA was really bad. Can I put this under the Education Interrruption section. I also talked about it in the disadvantaged section of the application as well.

Yes, feel free to input this info here.

Hi everyone! I have a question on transcript entry on Aadsas.
I have my labs collaborated into courses so they have credit of 0 and grade as NG (because they were graded within the course).
On my official transcript, they are not written but I can see labs on my unofficial transcript.
When I asked Aadsas they told me not to put labs unless it is shown on the official transcript.
Did anyone had this issue? How would I prove to schools that I have taken all the prerequisite labs?

What info do you recommend putting in the disadvantaged section? I discussed my environmental conditions growing up, as my dad was an alcoholic.
I think this section is free for students to write whatever they feel negatively impacted their school experience. So did your dad’s alcoholism effect your schooling at all? (Perhaps financially, early emancipation, etc. which led to a tougher school environment). You told me that you did poorly in your last semester due to family illness, so you should write about this to clarify why your grades were bad. But if there is no clear connection of how an adverse event affected your schooling then I wouldn’t include. Be sure to fill out the financial section too, especially if you grew up low imcome.

If they're on your unofficial transcript as 0, then it's likely that their units were included in your lectures' units, so you don't need to include them if they're not on your official transcript. BUT I'd keep your syllabi handy in case schools need to see them to validate this.
