Hello,
I was searching around for an official class thread and didn't find any, so I decided to start this. I don't know how many people are going to Hopkins next year but I am going to enjoy meeting all of you  . I have not been really active on SDN so I think a little intro is in order.
My name is K or Kay, whatever you guys prefer. I may have met you guys who went to the revisit weekend. I was the guy from UCSD. Anyways, I just wanted to give a shout-out to all my future classmates.

Nimbus, I can't place you right now, but I was at the revisit with my husband. We're moving up in the next couple of months.

Whoo-hoo!

Hey --

Congrats to everyone who is joining the Class of '07!

I've just finished my third year at Hopkins, and I'd be happy to answer any questions that anyone might have... you can post your question, or e-mail/PM me.

Hopkins is awesome -- best of luck to all of you!

--doepug (a new MS IV)

Woot! Woot! 😀  Can't wait to see you guys again in August! This is going to be good - I'm excited to get started. 3 months to orientation!

I'm not sure yet, but I'll probably be living in Reed. I got the application with the packet they sent out, and I'll probably send that out in a few weeks if I don't hear anything from other prospectives regarding off campus apartments. Hell, I figure it's a good way to meet the class anyway. VW, what area of town do you think you'll be moving to?

Hey, im not going to Hopkins, but whoever is has my congrats. Pretty impressive work. I'll be a trojan, which aint bad, but hopkins is second to none man.

Thanks Masalaman....Hope you enjoy USC, and congrats to you too..

We liked Canton, but my realtor just told us that it was the most overpriced area of town right now, but there are some deals occasionally. (We're hoping to buy a place--help, we're becoming grown-ups! 😱 ) So right now it depends on his job. He has an offer at a firm near BWI, but he's hoping from a better one from a firm in DC, in which case we'd need to be near the train station. We should know early next week, though ...

Good luck at USC Masalman. 🙂

Canton definitely seems like it would be one of the more expensive parts of town, since it's near the harbor and everything. Would be cool to live there though!

At revisit one of my host's friends was renting an apartment behind one of those Mt. Vernon townhomes, which was a really nice place for cheap. You're looking for something permanent, but if your husband gets that job in DC (crossing my fingers for him!), I bet that area would probably have some good deals, and it is next to the train station. I think I remember doepug saying he lived in Bolton Hill, which also seems like a nice area that is nearby. If I end up living off campus (which I probably won't), I'll probably start looking in those areas first.

Masalaman, best of luck to you. 🙂 As a Trojan myself, I can say that the students and faculty of USC are very proud of their program, and are committed to bringing in a lot of the best faculty and research (as well as some nice new facilities), and of course the clinical experience is some of the best you'll get in California. Just remember to practice your Spanish!!!

well, thought i'd intrude on this thread for a moment to wish all of you hopkins-bound the best of luck... turns out that i'll be at upenn, but i met all of you at second look and sincerely hope you enjoy your time at hopkins and beyond... kay, i (vishal) hung out with you quite a bit at second look... remember you told me you like to watch the aquarium channel and drop things off of cliffs at ucsd "while all the cool kids surf," as you put it... that's funny... anyway, take care all 🙂

shik, I met several people making the Penn/Hopkins choice. Did you hang out upstairs in the bar with me, my husband, and another girl? I might have you mixed up with someone else ... Anyway, that's a tough choice--I would have found it really difficult if I'd had that option (but Penn totally dissed me). 😉 Good luck at Penn!

vw, you and your hubby crossed paths with my girlfriend and i outside of reed hall i think, not a bar... i probably would've chosen hopkins but my girlfriend got into teach for america in philly, so the decision was made for me, and i'm very happy with it... i see you chose hopkins over that pitt money (i think?), and that makes perfect sense to me particularly because i think you told me you might be interested in academic medicine... or maybe i'm making that up??... anyway, i'm sure you and hubby will have an awesome time... hopkins is amazing and sounds like things will work out for your other half as well 🙂

Ah, shik, I remember exactly who you are now! Best of luck to both of you!

(And yeah, I left the money at Pitt ... it's not as crazy as it might sound, and we're both pretty happy about it. 🙂 )

Vishal,
I remember you and your g/f...Though I am sad that you won't be joining us next year, I am happy that you get to go to a great school like Penn. All my best wishes go with you and your g/f.

-K

Hey, ya'll - it's about time you started this thread! Ours last year was pages long by this time 😉 (just to throw in a little pinch of class competition, even though I swear there's none of that here)

Shik - I'm so sad you two won't be moving here in the Fall, but I'm happy that you'll be enjoying lovely Philly - it's also a great place. It was really great meeting you, best of luck to you but please give your girlfriend even more of my good wishes! After being through a first year of TFA and a first year of med school, I have to say hands down that TFA is the more challenging of the two. Be extra super nice to her next year, she's got a tough and incredibly important job 😉

About apartments - I definitely think Mt. Vernon or Charles Village are the places to look, both for affordability and ease of transportation, you really can't beat the free shuttle. If you are looking to buy, though, I think that Mt Vernon is uber-expensive and Canton is more reasonable for purchasing homes, I could be wrong, though, I'm just a renter. Federal Hill might also be a place to look for buying. Again, Mt Vernon rocks for getting around - I'll be working in DC this summer and it's a 2 minute walk to Penn Station for me and for just $120 a month I can commute with ease on the MARC train 🙂 Which is an option if you live outside of the city, find a place close to the MARC train line like Linthconium.

Feel free to email me if you have questions - I'm pretty sure there are some of my classmates (I know one for certain) who have apartments and need roommates - if you send me an email I can get the word out that you are looking for a place. There's also a housing office in Reed Hall that has a binder of people looking for roommates, that is a good resource. Living off campus takes more work and an extra trip to Baltimore than living in Reed, but for me it was completely worth it. Now, back to cardiology, I'm being a slacker right now - but only a week an a half left until SUMMER!!! 🙂

 No way! The big one that was linked on the revisit thread didn't even get started till the end of June last year! Although yes, our showing is slightly lame. 😉 So far only three of us have signed up - where are the other pre-Hopkins SDNers? 😕

If any current MS1s are looking for roommates, I would definitely be interested in talking to a few people. 🙂 Dawn, I'll send you an email to make sure I get ahold of you.

Shik, sorry to hear you won't be with us next year, but Penn is also a great school with a very similar curriculum. Nice campus too. 🙂 Best of luck to you and your gf!!

*Bump* We can't be the only 3 SDNer's going to Hopkins this year.....I refuse to believe it......NOOOOOO!!!!!! Where is everybody? Lights going dimmmm......:scared:

I know I met more of us at the revisit weekend. (My husband kept making fun of me b/c I had about 4 people ask me the first day whether I was VienneseWaltz.) There's a revisit thread somewhere, which I am too lazy to find right now ...

Bumpity Bump! Keepin the thread alive!

Anybody hear anything new lately? Another week or so of procrastination (actually waiting to hear from any interested parties about living off campus - don't think I will though) and then I'll probably send in my application for Reed, which is fine as long as I get in the suites. Cheap, too, which is important. 😀 K, have you sent in your form yet?

I also need to contact the financial aid office. Apparently there was some confusion about whether I was applying for just loans or loans and grants, and I thought I rectified that but I still haven't gotten my package in the mail. Although, I did get a first-year fellowship from my undergrad so I may not need loans the first year after all. Woohoo!

What's everyone doing this summer?

Next week we are looking for a house. Whoo-hoo!

So ... summer plans ... right now I am tutoring econ undergrads and finishing up a project for my research advisor. And reading for pleasure, which I have not done in two years (and will not do again for 8? Eek, I hope not ...)

How about you, Rapid?

Rapid,
I got my financial aid package like a week ago, and I am going to be cramming for finals this weekend. I will be sending in my housing application tomorrow. After finals, doing a round of pre-graduation celebrations, and after graduation, I have no idea what I will be doing for summer. Maybe traveling, may be chilling with friends, not sure yet...Just trying to concentrate for finals, which are all on Monday and Tuesday 🙁 ...Be back to SDN on Tuesday, hehe....

Good luck on finals K! I graduated about four weeks ago so I forget that you guys are still in school. But congrats! Almost done!

My big huge plan for the summer is working full time for some endocrinologists, which I did last summer and really enjoyed. It looks like I'll be doing more paperwork/business stuff this year unfortunately, but it's good because it's useful to learn how the docs run their practice, what they could do better, etc. Pretty cool but it's scary what I'm learning about the legal and business aspects of having a practice! 😱

No big vacation planned for me unfortunately, just my roadtrip to Baltimore. Which could be cool if I plan it right. Like VW, I also have a big reading list, and I'm also playing in a couple of groups - gotta keep my chops up since I'm planning on auditioning at Peabody too. 😀

Hey everyone. Another SDNer going to Hopkins here! Sorry, I haven't been on for a while to post.

I'm looking forward to hanging out with all of you for the next four years. I, too, am quite excited for school to start, and only a little nervous at studying with all you smart people 🙂

VienneseWaltz, my wife and I talked with you and your hubby for a while on second look weekend. I was one of the guys from Utah. Anyway, how's your cat?

So this summer I'm basically playing my PS2 full time. The blockbuster games freedom pass is great.

See you all later.

Hi, Phaedrus--I remember talking to you. Your wife is going to be a student, too, right? (There was another couple from Utah, I believe, but his wife will not be a student and they are expecting a little one in the fall, I think.)

Our cat is fine, thanks. He was pissed at us for leaving him over revisit weekend, but he got over it pretty quickly. 😛

So when is everyone planning to move to B-more?

Phaedrus! Hello and congrats!! I'm pretty sure I didn't meet you at revisit, but I look forward to meeting you in August. Where are you from in Utah? I am from Las Vegas - kind of close by I guess. 🙂

I'll probably be making the move right before orientation starts. I'm thinking I'll leave home about 4 or 5 days before and leisurely make my way cross country. Not sure when they'll let us move into Reed - I guess that is something else to consider, but I don't plan on getting to Baltimore too long in advance.

With the addition of another married student to our thread, this brings to mind another question: How old is everybody?

I just turned 21 (unfortunately, a month too late for the revisit, as VW will remember  ), so I imagine I'm towards the lower end of incoming students' ages.

DONE WITH FINALS!!!! w00t, w00t....Sorry, still can't wait to enjoy summer.....Anyways, I turned 22, two days ago, but couldn't celebrate due to finals, but I will combine my b-day celebrations with my graduation celebrations  ....

Happy belated birthday, nimbus and Rapid! 🙂 Rapid, we will have to take you out for a proper soaking once school starts, to make up for the revisit weekend.

So I just got accepted off of the waitlist...

I'm pretty excited, but sometimes wonder if they made a mistake... :| Oh well... hopefully they don't re-review applications...

I haven't gotten my admissions packet yet, nor was I able to go to second look so I'm not sure what I should be doing now... but if anyone is looking for roommates just let me know.

I'm really excited to meet you guys, everyone seems pretty helpful in this thread.

Hey Aristian! Congrats!!!!

Welcome to SDN, and welcome to the Hopkins thread. It's great to have you join us (and don't worry, we ALL thought they made a mistake when we got the phone call 😉 )!

As far as admissions packet details, we probably don't know much more than you do at this point. They sent out a housing application for Reed and some preliminary dates (orientation 8/28, classes start 9/2) about two weeks ago or so, but other than that we really haven't heard anything. If you just graduated from undergrad, you should arrange to have your final transcripts sent to the admissions office.

Also - tell us a little more about yourself!

And Nimbus - happy birthday!!!!

Rapid: Thanks.
Aristian: hehe, don't worry, I thought they made a mistake too when I got accepted. Of course, this feeling gets worse, if you've seen how talented, diverse, and generally nice all your classmates are. Yep, yep, definitely made me wonder what exactly is it that I bring to the group that they don't already have.

Yup. It took about 10 days for the admission packet to arrive after the phone call. I was worried they would figure out their goof in the meantime, so I was afraid to write my letters of withdrawal from other schools--didn't want to jinx it, you know. 😉 But now I have their offer in writing, so there's nothing they can do about it, mwuahahahahahaha!

Congrats, Aristian! We are glad to have you. And I'm sure they didn't make a mistake. 😀

hey!

just wanted to add my congratulations to y'all, welcome to hopkins! i'm a first year at hopkins. wait a minute, i'm actually a SECOND year now (woo-hoo!)... we finished school yesterday! so we're all excited to meet you guys, i hope y'all have a blast this summer! i'll probably see a lot of y'all at your fun-filled camping pre-orientation weekend (make sure you go to it, its a great way to meet your classmates!)

alright, gotta go. if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

remain well,
swaroop

MS II (!!)

I just got my admissions packet.. so it looks like everyone is stuck with me.

A little bit about myself eh? Well.. I like long walks on the beach, er.. wait thats for another website..

Well, as you can see, I am a little cheesy, but besides that there isn't much about me. I just graduated from Tulane this year and just got back from a roadtrip from New Orleans to my home in Portland, Oregon, just a couple days ago. I'm a Vietnamese male, so umm.. yeah, I like Pho and stuff. This summer I plan on earning some money and probably play a lot of golf. I don't really know what else to say, but if anyone wants to chat my AIM SN is Aristian487.

VienneseWaltz- You have a crazy good memory. You remembered me and the other couple from Utah, and could distinguish between the two of us. Nice work.

Rapid- Thanks. Congrats to you too (and to everyone--Hopkins is going to be awesome!) Anyway, I'm from Salt Lake City, and I just graduated from BYU. Las Vegas is a cool place! How do you feel about moving back East? It'll be weird, eh? And I'm 24.

Aristian- Congratulations on your acceptance. Another person from the West! My wife is from Portland and we've spent a lot of time there--it is really awesome (She wants to live there). I've been playing a little golf this summer; we should play when we get out to Baltimore, if you don't mind golfing with someone who sucks!

Bye all.

You're right, there are a lot of us making the trek from the West. It's definitely going to be a switch for us (gotta get ready for the summer humidity and the winter cold) but that's one of the reasons I was really intent on going to an East Coast school. I haven't lived in the East since I was 5, and I've been really eager for a change of scenery, even though I'll most likely return to the West when all is said and done.

Yeah, me too. It will be great to live in the East for a while.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to experience the East. It's great that we are close to so many great cities. I've learned a lot from going to school in the south, so hopefully it'll be the same in Baltimore.

Phaedrus: I'm not that good at golf either, but I like it despite my suckyness. It'd be awesome to go out golfing sometime; It's always hard to find people to go with.

Phaedrus, I think I remember talking to you a bit more than the other couple, so that must be why you stuck in my memory. 🙂

We found a house this weekend! I just found out that our contract was accepted. We figured we'd wind up in Hampden (just west of UG campus) b/c the prices are better and our realtor said the prices in Canton were overblown, but the one that had what we were looking for was in Canton, so we're going to be joining yuppie central 😉 hopefully in late July. (My fingers will be permanently crossed until our closing date--this might create an interesting problem for one of our future orthopods to think about  .) We are one block from Patterson Park and two blocks from the water. Whoo-hoo!

yipee, SDN is back.....almost completely.......
My graduation was a week ago, and I have been stuck writing some papers (hopefully, I will get like a second authorship to a paper.) I am just waiting to travel. I am hoping to get my passport, so I can visit my country (Burma/Myanmar) and my uncles in Taiwan. Anyways, just looking forward to the trip right now, and hope that SARS will not flare up in Burma or something, I think Taiwan is slowly coming under control. I am looking forward to staying at Reed, and hope to meet lots of my classmates (pick up some cool hobbies and stuff, because I think I am a very dull person 🙁 ). Lived my whole life in places where it doesn't snow in the winter, so I am kinda looking forward to that/dreading it....Anyways, just me rambling again...

Wow, way to go, VW! Your house sounds like it's in a cool part of town, and close to the hospital too!

It's official - I'm living in Reed. I faxed in the application on Monday and got the housing contract by snail mail on Wednesday. Talk about fast. 😱 Anyway, looks like I'm going to be in a suite on the 9th floor of the East wing - sweet.

Nimbus - good luck on the research and traveling. I actually haven't heard a lot about SARS lately - do you think that's because the media is getting tired of talking about it or because the threat is actually declining? Hopefully it's the latter. And ditto about Reed - seems like it's going to be an awesome way to get to know the class!

Nimbus and Rapid--that two-block walk to class will be pretty nice. 🙂 At least I should have a shorter drive to Hopkins than I did to Duke ... If anyone's looking for a real estate agent, PM me. Ours has been pretty good.

It looks like I am also going to be joining you guys in Reed Hall. I figure its the best way to meet people and I can always get a place off campus next year. Looks like they got me in 12A1 whatever that means.. I really hope that doesn't mean I am on the 12th floor; I don't think I am going to survive the helicopter noises, but at least the dorm has a nice ping pong table and pool table.

Nimbus, I don't think you have too much to worry about SARS; there are probably number of other diseases over there that are more dangerous.. just kidding... Can't let something like SARs prevent you from living life. It's cool to see someone who is not scared to travel to the area; I know a lot of people who have cancelled their trip.

Aristian - that means you are on the 12th floor. A is the suite and 1 is your room (I think). If the noise would really be a big problem, you could probably contact the housing office and have them move you lower. Looks like I'm in 9-A-4.

Aristian-Thanks for the words of encouragement/terror =). I really wanted to go back and see my uncles and my grandmother before I go off to Baltimore, kinda like to get their blessings and such. Plus, I haven't been back there for like 9 years, and I haven't seen my grandmother for like 3 years, so I figured that there is no better way to spend the last free moments of my life (j/k  ). Anyways, I hope you can switch out of the room. I suck at pool, but I can play ping pong with you.

VW-yup,yup that two-block walk sure looks good to me. Besides, I'll need it because I am a very bad morning person, who's caffeine-resistant. I need all the sleep that I can cram into.

As for my room number, I don't know yet. My parents told me that they got a package for me a few weeks back, and that I need to fill in some forms and send in a deposit by July 3rd, but no mention of the room number. I'll let you guys know the room that I will be living in as soon as I know.

Yo! I am going to Hopkins!!! Woohooo! I know a few people asked me if I was going come to Balitmore in the fall. I'm sorry I didn't answer right away, I had to get a few things sorted out. But it's official now, I just called today to make sure they got my confirmation letter.

I'll be living in Reed Hall with a bunch of you guys, so that will be awesome. I can't wait to be around everyone, it's gonna be so cool. We are gonna rock that dorm (please don't laugh at me 😀 ).

Yo Phaedrus, I may remember you from my interview day (Oct 25 I think), were you there then? I'm not really sure how to describe myself, I'm kinda tall and stuff...that's a start. I was usually a goofball at my interviews, but I think I was pretty normal at the Hopkins one, go figure.

Anyway, I can't wait to start and I'm so happy to be joining you all. I would type more, but (1) I'm on vacation and I gotta get to the pool and (2) there are freaking FIRE ANTS ALL OVER THIS COMPUTER!!! Need to get out of here now!! Are there fire ants in the Dominican Republic??? Ahhh! Back to the pool!

Dos cervezas, por favor. 😎 Insectos son muy estupidos!

Ha ha! We snatched you away from Penn! That WAS a tough choice, but I'm glad we got you, Chooch. 😎 Welcome!

Watch out everybody! If you haven't gotten it already, the big info packet is in the mail for you! It has stuff about health insurance, orientation weekend, questionnaires for various elective programs, a list of the people in the Class of 2007, and yes, problem sets (though the packet is smaller than I thought it would be after reading the shocked responses of previous generations of Hopkins SDNers). Eh, whatever - maybe I'll take them to work and do them when I'm bored.

Chooch - welcome!! I know what a major decision this was for you but don't worry - Hopkins is going to be sweet. Congrats, and I'm looking forward to meeting you in person!

I know ... I can't believe I have homework.

hey guys!

about those problem sets..from the looks of posts by last years entering students...theyre a joke played by the class above...can anyone vouch for that??

i just got back from europe and saw the packet though...and it looks pretty official...:/ im sooooo not in the mood to look at hw...

YOOOO!!!! I am going to be living in 12A4....Haha, you know what this means....I'll be seeing you a lot Aristian muhahahahaha........
Ok.....Anyways, just being a little crazy....
