When does residency stop making sense financially?

Current D4, will graduate with $300k federal loans. Residency for me looking like another $400k in private loans. After interest, $1M debt when I start practicing. I really do want this to by my career, but I don’t know if it’s financial suicide. Please help.

Probably better off working a few years first- most endo programs like experience anyways so it’s a way to pay down some of those loans. Private interest rates are also crazy right now and federal is capped

which program costs that much?

But wouldn’t working as an endodontist earlier give me a better ROI financially?

It would, but with how competitive it is, you may be forced to work a couple of years anyway as you apply. Not the worst case as most programs like experience, and you get to pay down some of your loans as someone else pointed out. Plus, this is predicated on the idea you're applying strictly to the most expensive programs. Which begs the question why couldn't you just get into a program with much lower tuition? It's not "financial suicide", and you still get to be an endodontist.

I don’t prefer private schools, I applied broadly. I’m just getting interviews from private schools. I will happily go to the cheapest program.

It really depends on what kind of lifestyle you want. In my area a lot of people do not work five days a week. What most people don’t tell you is that working five days a week, while lucrative may not be worth it. Seeing 6-8 cases a day plus emergencies can be very soul sucking. Referrals can be very demanding and patients can wear you down overtime. Couple this, with the stress of you needing to pay your monthly loan which may affect your clinical ethics. Other factors include where you live, insurance, reimbursement rates, and family, kids, vacation time, etc. My wife is a specialist, but works two days a week. If this is you, I would say it’s not worth that kind of debt. Overall, the money is nice, but consider your quality of life too and a large debt can loom over you for a long time.

Any guess on how many of those are applicants competing for the 3 domestic spots?
I'm not sure how to answer your question? It was all on zoom, so you didn't really get to interact with anyone. There was a zoom "waiting room" where you could theoretically chat with the few others that were in the queue for the couple minutes before your other interview but that was it. I just remember there were about 30 numbers/ applicants on the master interview sheet they sent and it was it was like 20-30 min interviews with 4 or 5 different faculty. They had like 200-250 applicants and they interviewed about 30 for those spots that they had.

Do you feel like these virtual interviews are kind of just a formality to say they had interviews? i.e they already know who they want to take?

I am not knowledgeable to know for certain. I applied last year and I feel like I was sort of late getting my app in and didn't have the supplemental completed and got an interview somehow but ultimately did not get in. This year I had my app sent in early, I have more experience and feel my application is better and apparently I did not get an interview this year. I have no idea about their process. They do have that ACT program at UCLA and maybe select someone from that into the program. Also I did read on SDN that they like people that attended IVY league schools. I kind of didn't believe the IVY thing, but last year at least one of the people that was chosen had an IVY school background, so maybe there is some truth to that.

Is there any current resident at NYU Langone Brooklyn or anyone who has interviewed there? I'd really appreciate hearing about your interview experience, the types of questions you were asked, or any tips or advice you might have.

Over the last 5 years, UCLA has always selected one candidate from Harvard. In 2023, they selected two Harvard candidates (they just graduated).

Historically, they also accept an internal candidate (UCLA grad).

So in reality you may be really competing for just one spot.

They typically interview on zoom, about 30 candidates, but they already know who they're picking, and yes I would say the interview is merely a formality. The program director is known to play favorites, and she has been there a long time so her M.O. very obvious. She makes all the decisions, and the residents have no say in the matter. Faculty can make recommendations, but she gets the final say, and rumor has it she already has a list of her top three candidates before even sending out any interview invites.

Not trying to be salty, just stating facts. UCLA posts their resident bios online, you can check them out for yourselves.

I do have an internal connection at UCLA, and there is a lot of inner turmoil within that dental school right now. Many elite faculty have left, and the school is struggling to get donations. Of course a lot people want UCLA because of the stipend and no tuition, but I would stay far away from them.

I can only speak for Pitt, it used to be that the residents had equal say to the program Director and faculty, and there was a vote we would take after all interviews were done. Yes, we had our favorites and realistically there weren’t as many spots available as people thought. Residents could talk up applicants and we ended up making pretty awesome resident classes from it. We were a tight knit family. After the regime change, the PD likely only makes the decision and is very stats driven. I think a lot of excellent candidates/future endos are overlooked due to simply overlooking on somebody’s application. Hurts a little to see now.

You mention you haven't received an interview, but from my knowledge invites have not been sent out yet.
Someone had messaged me and said that they had received an interview invite. I didn't bother to verify, so I'm sorry if I was mistaken. I was just bummed after reading that but I'm sorry If I was incorrect and mislead people.

Another user had messaged me saying the received an interview invite. I took them at their word. Beyond that, I'm unsure if it's true. I am sorry if that was not correct, I didn't verify

When does residency stop making sense financially?

Current D4, will graduate with $300k federal loans. Residency for me looking like another $400k in private loans. After interest, $1M debt when I start practicing. I really do want this to by my career, but I don’t know if it’s financial suicide. Please help.
Not worth it. It is definitely a financial suicide ! 1M !!! No matter what is your situation, $1M to be an endodontist.. it is not worth it!!

Absolutely agree. If you've been through finances in the real world, anybody would agree with this. If you have been stuck in school forever, you wouldn't understand it until you feel it with your own skin. Probably thinking you are going to be a high roller but 1m after-tax plus interest (with today's interest rates and i don't see it coming lower any time soon), woof. The golden ages of dentistry has passed and it's getting worse. People in their 60s will tell you their experience and tell you it's worth it but back then it was way different. Don't get fooled. When they bought a house it was like 50-80k, now worth 10-20x that while their income back then probably was similar to today's (i.e. they probably could have bought a house every month or two back then).

Well I guess you could pay it back, if you live frugally, not reward yourself like crazy, not a big house, no fancy cars, not have a family, work 6 days a week 8-10 cases a day for a couple of years. But you have no idea what life throws at you as you get older.

Be very careful
