Good afternoon!

December 1st is a very exciting day in dental school admissions for both prospective candidates and our faculty and staff! Congratulations to those of you who received acceptances today and who will be receiving them in the next few days!

We have begun sending out our acceptances but we will not be filling our class until after our January 1 deadline and completion of all interviews. There are interview seats still open meaning we will be sending out additional interview invitations in the coming weeks.

If for any reason you no longer wish to be considered for admission to the VCU School of Dentistry, please let us know by either sending us an email ([email protected]).

Best wishes as you continue to pursue your dental education!

For those of you still waiting;

-If you haven't heard from them (or other schools) since you submitted, consider sending an "update" email. I made a word/pdf "update" of the things I had done since my app was submitted in the summer- research I had done, classes, volunteering, training etc - and just said I would like to add this to my file for consideration. Puts you back on their radar without being annoying or neurotic and shows you're committed to lifelong education. COINCIDENTALLY a few days later on Christmas eve I got an interview invite.

-Don't get caught up in the pissing match of stats or "rate my chances" here on SDN. I promise you, not one admissions committee cares one iota what anyone here thinks your chances are. You know what average and good stats are, anything more is just stroking your ego or feeding your neurosis. Because...

-At the end of the day everyone is different. Even if you had straight 30's and a 4.0 you aren't guaranteed to get in. Obviously do well academically but everyone does well academically so think about boosting your profile by being well rounded, being interesting, etc. Truthfully, pre-dent academics aren't a fail proof indicator of dental school success. On average 4-5 people will fail out/have to repeat etc and it's NOT necessarily the people with the lowest entering stats.

-True life; our class lost I think 4 from academics the first semester (& 3 at the end of the year for hand skills) and of those 4 none were the lowest entering GPA/DAT, the reason I know is that it was me (they announced the "range" of entering scores during orientation and I had a slight panic attack that maybe I wouldn't make it). It took me 4 years and 3 application cycles to get in. I rank in the top 15 in the class now so, again, the metrics used for acceptance or getting into lots of schools (I only got accepted to VCU, OOS) aren't necessarily indicators for success.

TL;DR - hope this helps, feel free to ask me any questions

Be calm and good luck

I haven't really heard from them yet but I just did the academic update through aadsas. Is that good enough?

I personally went (and recommend) a more personal and direct route via emailing a pdf; and that way you aren't limited to academic stuff only. Just do a streamlined/bullet point update and email it, you can be more robust and you know they receive it

Invited to interview in January! Got the e-mail on Christmas too 😀 OOS, and very excited to attend!

Received an invite, does anybody mind messaging me about this interview? Thank you in advance.

Invited to interview on January 19. Applied to VCU December 31, the day before the deadline. Got the email yesterday. (Last minute panic applications were worth it!!! Lol)

May I ask your stats?

Gave up my OOS interview (for 1/19) earlier this week due to finances and a couple of acceptances already - looks like it went to one of you though, which is fantastic! Best of luck everyone. VCU is a great school, and it was a tough decision to make.

Hey guys, to those who got interviews/accepted, how did you guys write your PS? Did you incorporate a story/ begin with a story and tie it to your interest to the field or did you write the general autobiography kind of thing? Thanks!!

The personal statement has a topic. Why you want to become a dentist. Don’t tell a story. Tell what led you to take this journey and why you want to go to dental school. Remember that a PS is likely not going to make you but it could very well break you if you write a crappy one. Good luck!

Thanks, I know we have to answer the question as to why we want to become a dentist, but I dont have a grand story to tell, ie life changing dental experience, any clubs/ etc that i can tie to my reason. There was one predent long time ago who posted his ps about his love for tennis and exotically tying to denistry... lol I guess Im just afraid my PS will sound extremely dull.

Trust me mine was nothing special. It doesn’t have to be it just has to be your reasoning. You don’t need an elegant story. Deans have said many times we don’t want to read a story. They just want to know why dentistry.

Okay, thank you! I guess Ill try to make it just so its not too unbearable to skim over oh boy

The best advice I can give is that your first draft won’t be anywhere close to your final draft. I spent about 6 months writing my PS and I had no idea what to write about when I started it. Just jot down a few ideas and reasons and start writing about them. I promise it’ll come to you!

Hi all!
I was interviewed at VCU today and asked if I were accepted anywhere else and I told my interviewer that I was.

Any thoughts about this? I kinda feel like this worsens my chances even though I am in state and VCU is my first choice :|

I was asked the same thing today and I just answered honestly. But I also followed it up by saying I’m not necessarily going to go to the other school just because they accepted me first, and that I’m still exploring my options. As long as you made it seem like you’re still interested in VCU, I’m sure you’ll be fine!! 🙂

Anybody have 3 interviewers in their group? I interviewed today.

Does anyone have an idea of how much class is filled right now? I was wondering if those who already joined facebook page might have an idea...

There’s currently 63 people in the group, but some are current students. I’d say half full since VCU has two acceptance days (dec 1st and end of feb)

Does anyone know when the last interviews take place? Haven't had a rejection or an invite yet. Applied late August.

According to their website, they generally do interviews till the end of March, but I assume that differs depending on the year

Unfortunately, I believe the last interview occurred on January 19. I had an interview conflict with 2 schools for the 19th (I ultimately got accepted to a couple of schools so I ended up declining both interviews anyway) but when I called VCU in the beginning of January to ask if I could reschedule my interview, they said I couldn't because January 19 was their last interview of the cycle...

Mmm. That's a bummer if you're correct. Maybe next year....

They could start next week, but I'm gonna put my money that they will let ppl know next friday.

When I called them, I was told that the committee is meeting towards to end of next week to make some final decisions and maybe provide additional interviews.
I thought jan 19 was the end of their interviews?

same here. hopefully good news coming our way soon!
Thank you for taking the time to interview with us. We appreciate your patience as the Admissions Committee continues to consider candidates for the Class of 2022. Your application is under review and no decision has been made yet regarding your acceptance to our school. More definitive updates will be available in the next couple weeks. Is this the email you got?
