Hey current students! (or any one else who might have some better insight on this than I lol). I am in the midst of making my pros and cons list for my acceptance schools, and I was wondering if I could pick your brains a bit. I am interested in focusing on food animals, and while I was at OSU, I felt like there weren't many people with that focus (or even large animals in general). The faculty and the student panels did not have anyone interested in food animal. There were some equine interests, but obviously that's a little different. I'm not sure if this was maybe an unfortunate occurence just on my interview day or if there really aren't many people that go into food animal at OSU. Could anyone tell me if this is incorrect? I would especially love to hear from you if you are planning to focus on food or large animals. Obviously there are statistics online of how many large animal cases the school has and things like that, but I would like to hear some info from a more direct source if that's ok!
If others are interested in hearing about this, then feel free to respond here, but if not, PMing me is fine too 🙂
I am a second year student and I am food animal/mixed animal and public health focused. As with most vet schools, there is a majority of students that are interested in small animal but I think that OSU has a pretty large subgroup of food animal students. My second year class is very active and our school's Food Animal Club is one of the largest and most active clubs on our campus. We actually organized our own annual Food Animal Symposium with funding from Zoetis. Here is the Facebook page about it: http://www.facebook.com/#!/ZoetisOSUFASS I'm really excited about the wetlabs and if you're free that weekend, it's right before you have to commit to a school. So far in our courses, I have been able to take several food animal electives: cattle diseases, swine disease and topics in dairy production. Several others were also offered, I just declined to take them because I have that option 3rd year. We also are exposed to small animal, food animal and equine is each systems course we complete (ex. respiratory, urinary, etc.) Another unique aspect to OSU is that we have all three veterinary hospitals on our campus right next to the academic buildings. During my lunches and breaks I sometimes walk over to see if they are doing surgery or have patients in the Food Animal Hospital. The clinicians love to teach so if I have questions or want to watch/assist and won't get in the way, they don't mind. I am also part of our Milking Team (sign up for shift to milk dairy cows staying in the hospital) and Food Animal Club Emergency Team (get called info emergencies after hours on a rotating basis). OSU also has their own swine production facility, dairy and the Marysville clinic for ambulatory services.
If you have more specific questions feel free to ask here or PM me! I am not from an agricultural background and if you would like to talk to one of my classmates who is only food animal focused, I can PM you their information and they can give you their point of view.
