Ohio State c/o 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does OSU use lecture capture to record class? If the school uses it, how many professors actually utilize it? Or are students expected to get missed notes from classmates? Just curious since I inevitably get a big cold/bad flu EVERY year.

I am not sure what lecture capture is? Some classes will be podcasted, but I'd say it's only like 1/4 of the classes. You will get a notes packet with all the notes for the course for nearly all your classes and every class with have some form of notes for if you miss (usually notes packet plus the powerpoint that was presented in class). I haven't missed a class, but feel like if you have to miss it wouldn't be hard to figure out what was talked about in class and be OK. Probably people will record the lecture as well so you could get the file from a classmate.

I think she meant podcasting, squirrels 🙂

I think they are trying to podcast more lectures every semester. They were worried about attendance, but it doesn't seem to affect it much (except for right before exams--haha!). Of course, it's up to the professor, though.

I was looking through the curriculum and didn't really see Immunology in it. Is this included as part of any of the core classes? Just curious since I'm in it now only because my adviser said it would help me next year. I don't actually need the class to complete my major/graduate...

We're doing immuno right now 🙂 It's part of the biology I class you take second semester. It's a combination class of immunology and pathology.

Thanks! I figured it might be under another name. Makes me a little more motivated to learn it now so that I know it better for next year, haha

Are we going to be really behind if we never took an immunology or pathology class before? I am pretty nervous about that 🙁

You'll be fine, don't worry. If I can make it through after taking 7 years off of school and remembering very little of what I learned, you'll be fine 🙂. I also never took immunology or pathology, or comparative biology, or like any of those extras that they recommend. I had been planning to go into animal care so I didn't take a lot of the more advanced classes. You'll be fine, don't worry.

Any current students know where we can buy some CVM apparel?? I am ready to start repping OSU!

Unfortunately, there's not a ton available until orientation. There's a Barnes and Noble somewhere that sells a car decal and a sweatshirt with OSU Vet Med but that's about it. Fear not, though, you will be inundated with stuff come orientation!

Headed to Columbus now with my mom to look at apartments tomorrow! Probably going to check out the barnes and noble for that car decal 🙂

Have fun! How long will you be in town?

Are there any computer requirements for OSU? I haven't heard of any, but I know some schools do require certain systems. Just curious 🙂

Nope! All of our notes are given to us in note packets, though professors do often provide powerpoints that you can download off of Carmen (blackboard, basically). I bring my laptop to class to take notes, others use their IPads, and others just take notes on the hard copies that we were provided.

Just got here! I'm staying at my grandparents house in Dublin. Were probably staying until tuesday afternoon. My friend from Japan is studying at the vet school for two weeks now so I'm excited to see her tomorrow night!

Not sure which thread you guys want to use since some people dont like the title of the other one. Doesn't really matter to me but I thought I'd bump this one just in case.

Anywayyy. Just sent in my application for Runaway Bay! Governour's Square was a close second choice but my roommate really liked Runaway Bay. Can't wait to move in! Anyone else considering this apartment complex?

Hey guys! So, once we submit our seat deposit, will we be getting another packet with info regarding what we do next? I feel like I am clueless as to what the next steps are 🙄

Ive been emailing them every two weeks to see if my spot has changed. Im number 14. They always reply with the same thing... " The wait list won't really move till after April 15th." I guess its just wishful thinking that if I annoy them enough it will magically change! They submitted offers to 280 people for the 160 seats.. I need quite a few people to say no before I get a chance! This is my second year in a row too 🙁

Well, good luck! Last year I think the waitlist got into the thirties so hopefully that's a good sign!

Has anyone taken advantage of a file review yet if you were rejected for the 2017 class?

I'm looking to maybe do one next week when my break is over, but aside from obvious things that I'm already rectifying, I just can't imagine what other useful information they'd offer, you know, other than "better luck next time." Unless, I totally overlooked something immensely important that I'm somehow still unaware of....

I imagine I didn't meet some post-application-deadline benchmark or, maybe, they'd already met their quota for middle-class, white, 20-something females from Ohio. 🙁

If anyone did a file review, did you learn anything interesting about their selection criteria this year?

I may have overlooked this in the acceptance letter, but does OSU have a second look weekend?

I didn't learn anything super interesting; just some stats for the accepted class.

However, I think it is useful if you are applying again next year. They did go over some of the things that I expected to hear (about the interview). A few things I didn't expect to hear though.

For example, I learned on my application that I need to be more detailed in my veterinary experience sections. I purposefully kept mine vague and focused more on the types of patients that we see (one of the clinics that I go to sees some fairly interesting cases) because I'm not lucky enough to have a tech job, and other than cleaning, there isn't anything set that I do every time I come in because I don't work there (not a lot of clinics are hiring in my area and my other jobs are more flexible with school and shadowing), and I didn't want to list a bunch of things that weren't specifically my responsibility. So, I did generalize a lot (for example, I said I assisted during exams but didn't say how) instead of saying specifically I do this, this, and this which is more of what they wanted. They also said that I should focus more on what I actually did with the cases I put in my personal statement.

I did learn however that my diversity of experiences which I thought was more of my problem was fine, but I needed to have more experience hours.

There is an open house on April 6th! I'm not sure of the details though. I can't come that weekend so I didn't look into it. 🙁

The Open House is more geared toward the community (ie, kids). There will be booths from all of the different clubs, however, so that may be neat to check out. I wouldn't travel from OOS for it, though.

OSU does not have a 2nd look weekend, but they were more than happy to accommodate me last year when I asked if I could get another tour. I'm sure they would do the same for anyone that would like one.

Good to know! Everyone made it sound like I was missing out on something important...

Is it true we are assigned a big brother or sister? When/how do we get those assignments?

Yep, all first years get a big sib who is going into their second year. You'll find out who your big is via email over the summer 👍

Anyone know when we receive the "Incoming Class First Year Handbook" that the Class of 2016 makes for this class? Is it sent to us or just through email? I feel like I need to start getting stuff together i.e. rabies vaccines, loan stuff, etc, but I do not really know what I am supposed to do. I feel like I am a little in the dark and hope I am not missing something!

I believe we're still working on updates. When it's updated, it will be on the incoming class page on the OSU website. Most of the information will be the same--the only section that will be a lot different will be the course descriptions (c/o 2015 did not know much about our curriculum...we will have more information since we've gone through it 🙂 )

I did the file review this year and they caught an error on my application which led to an interview this year and now I am on the wait list. A lot of the things I've read is that if you follow their suggestions in the review, you'll have a better chance next year.

My fiance and I have been in Columbus all weekend revisiting so we can decide where to go this fall. It's between OSU and Mizzou...such a difficult decision! The first time I visited here it was kind of rushed, so I didn't really get a chance to get a feel for the area. Also, there wasn't really a representation of food/large animal interested people on my interview date, so I wanted to investigate that further (April Pugh ensured us that this lack of representation was NOT an accurate depiction of OSU which made me feel a lot better). I'm definitely liking it better this time around and am looking forward to my tours of Marysville and the vet school and my meetings with some Food Animal profs tomorrow! I'll be the random person on a tour, so feel free to come say hi SDNers 🙂

The first and second years may be a little unfriendly tomorrow, just FYI. The second years have a respiratory exam and the first years have an anatomy exam on Tuesday! Haha. Glad you're enjoying OSU 🙂

haha thanks for the heads up! I will remember to not speak unless spoken to

OK... dumb question. For file reviews, do you call to make an appointment? Or do they usually have someone available to do your review when you call? I really need to get the ball rolling on that... Thanks!

You call and make an appointment, and then they ask you what times are good for you and set something up. Then, you just call them or go see them whenever the appointment is.

Hey Guys! Do we need a lab coat for anatomy or any other of our first semester classes? Do people wear them?

Some people wear a lab coat to anatomy lab, but definitely don't go out and buy a new one for that because it'll get destroyed. Scrubs are what most people wear.

What's the difference in emails between @buckeyemail.osu.edu or @osu.edu?

Nothing really. When you sign on to your email through the university's site you have to use the buckeyemail.osu.edu as your sign on. But when sending emails both work as valid email addresses. Most people use: Name.#@osu.edu

Will we have every class every day next fall or does OSU work on a block schedule? I am assuming around 8-5 everyday on campus as well, right?

There is one class you take that is only 7 weeks, but that's the only one that's considered "block scheduled." The other classes are all semester long. The times you are in class varies on the day, but it's usually 8-3 or 8-4 with an hour break for lunch. You start at 9 second semester but go to 4 a lot more often. Some classes are consistently on the same days/times but others are all over the place. My best advice is to be flexible 🙂

Finally made my decision! Sending in my deposit tomorrow 🙂 So excited to finally start looking for housing! Any suggestions for married couples with a dog and a snake?

Congrats boilermaker! I had the same decision to make last year (between OSU and Mizzou) and ultimately made the same one. Have you joined the facebook group? I'm sure you could get some great advice about housing there! As a single female, I've only really considered apartments, but those are definitely options too (depending on the type/size of your dog).

Let me know if you have any questions! And congrats on your decision!

Just joined the Facebook group. Thanks for reminding me about it! I have a bull terrier/jack russel mix, ~28 lbs, so we should be pretty good on the places with restrictions. Chased the mailman down to send in my deposit today. So excited! 😀

Yay, more SDN classmates!

For current students:
Do we have papers/projects/homework or just tests and quizzes for our classes?

Mostly just tests/quizzes. Some of the electives have more extra work (projects, presentations, etc.). And epidemiology your first semester is ALL projects (have fun with that 😉 ). There are a few extraneous things here and there, but it's largely tests and quizzes. I am SOO excited for you guys 🙂 And I'm even more excited that I'm done with first year in less than a month!!
