Congrats Wshn!!! :excited:

Has anyone who was notified via a phone call received a letter in the mail, status change on buckeye link, or an email notification? I got a phone call on the 14th saying I was offered a seat and I was under the impression that they had already mailed my letter before the call was placed but I have yet to receive it or any other form of notification. I know it will eventually come but it doesn't seem real until I have something written that is tangible... :d

I got my call on Jan 23, my status on buckeye changed a week later, and I received a letter in the mail 2 weeks later 🙂 Be patient, it will all come! For now, go celebrate, you're a buckeye!! 🙂 🙂

I've only received a phone call as well, so I wouldn't worry too much. I think they told me on the phone the letter would take about two weeks so I don't think it was mailed yet.

Has anyone started looking for housing yet?

My acceptance email finally came through. Two copies of it actually. Must have gotten lost in internet limbo (either that or the admissions office is working at 9:30 on a sunday night--unlikely) It says the letter will arrive in about two weeks. I'll probably be declining though, so hope that helps an SDNer on the waitlist!

Dovelover- where will you be going?? MINNESOTA?

I haven't started looking yet. When do people usually start looking into housing and roommate options??!

From reading last year's thread it looked like they were looking now, but the interview/acceptance process was done a month sooner. I'm potentially looking for a roommate but I'm still waiting to talk to some people from my undergrad to see who's going to OSU.

If you look on the incoming students page from OSU, there's a list of housing that vet students recommend. Check it out 👍 I live at Runaway Bay, if anyone would like more info on them.

I've been going through that list and looking around the websites. I like the looks of Runaway bay. What are some pro/cons of that place? Do you live with a roommate?

Congrats to everyone!!!!

Could anyone suggest what areas are best to live in? I will be moving with my husband from the DC area and we were looking into the possibility of getting a house, but we don't have any idea where to look!

I live with a roommate currently, but will be living on my own next year (she's nice, we're just different people0.

Pros:
Pet friendly!
Lots of vet students here
Office staff is super nice and helpful
Washer/dryer in apartment
Nice and spacious
We have new appliances, not every apt does
They're pretty fast with maintenance
Lake view!
Rent is pretty good with a roommate
Pool and gym (24/7 access to gym with code)
Lots of parking
I've never felt unsafe
Bolts on doors
Separate buildings with ~8 apartments in each (safer). You get to each apartment via an indoor stairwell.
Keycode access to buildings
Haven't had noise issues
13 minutes to campus
Cute little mini-mart next door to complex

Cons:
Lots of potholes
Utilities are separate and can add up
They've had some safety issues (there is a lake on the property, and people can be stupid when they're drunk)
They don't let you know when there's a break-in, etc.

I would say to start looking as soon as you can. Many of the places on the list fill up quickly. I live at Heritage Apartments and love it. I live alone. If you would like more information about Heritage or anything else, feel free to message me.

Pros:

Quiet
Close to school (2 miles, but doesn't feel like you're right on campus and is outside of the crazy football zone, which you'll appreciate in the fall when you can still get out and go to the store or somewhere else on game day).
Cheap compared to the other recommended areas on the list (my total cost of living including having a dog, cable, internet, everything but food is $750 a month). Gas, electric, cable, and internet are all included so you just pay rent plus the water bill, so it's nice to only have to worry about 2 bills each month).
Safe area
Nice gym, although small, plus free tanning if you are into that.
new appliances (pretty sure all the apartments that they are renting out are getting updated before people move in, which is awesome because you literally get brand new everything, counters, hardwood floor, and appliances. I'd ask if you'll be getting an updated apartment or not, when you call, though.
It's affordable to live alone if you can handle the smaller space

Cons:
Small space (360 square feet), but as long as you have a calm dog or a cat (they are pet friendly) that doesn't need a lot of space, it's definitely doable.
Only 2 washers and dryers per building (was an issue for the first time yesterday when one of our washers was broken and the other wouldn't accept money, but the buildings aren't too far apart and the neighboring building's washers were both working and open).

Does not apply to me, but several of my friends in 1 and 2 bedrooms have had serious noise issues. If you're looking for a studio it's great because all the studios are in the same building and max occupancy is 1 so it's really quiet since everyone is alone. My big also lives at Heritage and loves it and is in a 1 bedroom, so not all the larger spaces are loud, but I'd say don't get into the long buildings with 2 floors and like 20-30 apartments. Go for the ones that have 4 apartments per building if you want a larger apartment.

If you're looking for a studio I'd highly recommend it.

I'm #2 on OSU's waitlist so that def helps me! I have literally been stalking sdn looking for people who may be declining osu for other schools! I won't count myself in until I get the call but it does ease my mind somewhat that I still may be going to OSU in the fall!

Thanks so much NStarz and Squirrelsrule for posting that information! It helps a lot. So far I think I like Governours Square, Runaway Bay, Fox & Hound, Sterling Place Apts, Olentangy Commons, Heritage Apts, and The Quarry.

On a side note, my buckeye link changed and it gave me a "second wind" of happiness! So excited! :soexcited:

I'll likely be turning down OSU and I know another person who probably is too. Just remember with the waitlist they over accept by a bit for the class too (I think OSU said they accept about double to start). So some people that were accepted will have to turn down their spots before they even start going down the waitlist.

This might be a stupid question, but if schools over accept, can they potentially rescind your acceptance if the class fills before you notify them? Or are we safe until April 15? I was going to wait to hear back from all my schools before I committed anywhere, but if I might lose my seat because they over accept, maybe I will commit before I hear from everybody... Any one have any advice/experience with this? I'm really sorry if this is a stupid question!

Not a stupid question at all! I was wondering the same thing...because if it's anything like an airline, we are screwed!

I didn't think vet schools did the whole over accepting thing. That's a big risk. I thought that was the whole purpose of the waitlist. Wildcat are you sure they didn't mean that they waitlist double the class? Because accepting double seems a bit crazy...
Regardless, they are required to hold a seat for you until April 15th, per AAVMC policy. That seat is yours until then, and so long as you don't do something stupid, unethical, etc. or fail to meet to requirements of a provisional acceptance (ie passing a prerequisite in spring semester) they cannot take that seat away from you. However, this does not apply to international schools or Tuskegee, so if you were accepted at any of those, be aware of that.
In the interest of full disclosure however, I should note that I did once know someone who lost his seat at VMRCVM because they over accepted out of state students and like many accepted students he failed to read the fine print that said they would only take the first so many students that accepted their seat because of this. However, this was in early 2011, before the current April 15th acceptance deadline policy came into effect. So my guess is VMRCVM's devious little policy was quashed by that, as were any others like it. But I don't know that for certain.

I emailed Shayna about all of this just the other day! Ill copy and paste it here....I am ranked #14 on the waitlist.
We do not notify applicants each time the waitlist moves, but we will send occasional updates and then contact you if you end up getting admitted. I can tell you though that the waitlist never changes until after April 15th. Also, yes we do accept more than 160 (this year it was around 280) assuming not everyone will accept, particularly the out of state applicants.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

Thanks,
Shayna

Wow, that's crazy that they over accept by that many people! That's a bit eye opening...

AFAIK, they look at last year's (and the years before) to see how many people they need to over-accept by to end up with their final class. I know one year that VMRCVM accepted too many people. And more people ended up accepting the offer that they received, so they needed to have a larger class than usual. There has been some sketchiness in the past with schools saying you need to accept by a certain deadline, and that you may lose your seat, but that's what the April 15 deadline is for. The AAVMC even came on here one year to say that if there was any sketchiness going on in that a school is making you accept early or risk losing your seat to notify them. The fact that schools over-accept is for the schools' benefit; you don't need to be a part of that game.

Well, my bubble just burst into a million pieces how is it even possible they get to anyone on the waitlist when they over accept that many to begin with?!

Maybe I missed something in my acceptance email, but does anyone know how much the deposit is, or where we send it? My email was very vague regarding accepting my offer. Do we get more info via snail mail about how to accept and make a payment?

When you get the official letter via snail mail, it will include the form that you mail back with a check for $25 (or $325 I think if you're OOS). It has a pre-addressed envelope and everything. 🙂

If you think about it, it makes sense that they over accept. I know someone last year with awesome stats that applied to like a bazillion schools and got into all of them. They can only attend one. Most people apply to more than one school and especially for OOSers, if they have good enough stats to be accepted to the OOS school, then likely they got accepted IS (if they have an IS school) and likely that school will be cheaper than OSU and they will attend there.

If they accepted a bunch of extra ISers that would be different because most IS people would accept.

If they don't overaccept, though, imagine how many people would be on the waitlist and they would have to wait until either the people send notice that they won't be attending OSU or until April 15th. They'd have to call only the number of people they have spots for at a time and then wait for all of them to call back and then move down the list. That'd be like an extra hundred people to call. Also at that point, many OOSers would have been accepted at their IS school and have to notify by April 15th so at that point even if OSU was their number 1 choice, since they had a definite school they were in, they'd likely go with that.

Even with the amount they overaccept, people almost always get called from the waitlist, so just hang tight, it seems crazy and impossible, but there is still hope if you're on the waitlist 👍.

Thanks! I'm just so excited I want to make it official now haha

Current OOS students: can I have your thoughts on what you think about not being able to travel out of Ohio during the summer due to the residency stipulation? What do you usually do during the summers? Are you able to easily find things to do in state? Do you ever see internships/opportunities outside of Ohio and wish you could go?

Thanks!

Jestry, I am in state, but I can tell you there are tons of opportunities in Columbus for vet students. I am going home for the summer, but there have been many interesting opportunities that I've seen that I'd be interested in if I were staying in Columbus. Also, if you are going out of the state for a unique vet experience that can be OKd to allow you to exceed the 30 days out of state. You just can't go home and work at a clinic or go to another state to work at a clinic. Hope that helps.

What qualifies as a "unique vet experience".

So say you got into a summer research program in a different state, that would be okay? Just not a traditional small animal clinic?

I'm not sure about research, since OSU has a pretty excellent summer research program for veterinary students.

In terms of unique veterinary experiences...something like a VIDA or RAVS trip. Our anatomy professor takes some students to work on exotics in Thailand every year...that definitely counts. They generally tell us not to count on leaving over the summer (ie, you should count whatever travel you want to do as part of your thirty days). If something comes up later, then you may be able to get permission to go (and have it not count against you), but generally, you know things ahead of time. So they basically told us not to use up our thirty days over winter/spring and then sign up for a RAVS trip for two weeks over the summer. It's only for one summer, and the tuition discount is more than worth it.

So once you establish residency in Ohio, the 30 day rule no longer applies?

How safe is Columbus in general? I'm from a big city so I know the rules and how to use common sense, I am just interested in where the safe places are to live. Any suggestions?

Oh okay that makes a huge difference. I thought we were stuck in Ohio for all 3 years, and wasn't sure if I was going to be missing out on something cool. Thanks!

I am from a small town, like really small, and I've adjusted well to living in Columbus. There really are all kinds of places in Columbus, some areas are right in the middle of the city and you get the big city feel and others are kinda out of the city and not so busy. I live 2 miles from school, but it feels like a small town, I really like it where I am. I feel safe taking my dog out even if it's late and have never had any issues. People have packages delivered and have never heard of anything being stolen here. The guy across the hall from me had a package that sat outside his door for a week before he came home and got it and no one took it. Haven't heard of any cars being broken into or anything. Definitely very possible to find a safe area to live. I'd go with one of the recommended apartment complexes, I tried to find a cheaper place on my own and ended up being in a sketchy neighborhood and I'm glad I decided not to move there.

This may be a little too soon to start asking, but...when do we start looking for roommates?! I definitely want to live with a roommate, but being OOS, I don't know anyone!...except for one awesome girl who I went to school with (shout out: sunshinette), but she's married and living with the hubby...😛

Current students - How did you find your roommates for first year and when did you start looking??

I don't think it's too soon...I'm planning on living with someone from my undergrad. I'm lucky that theres a bunch of people every year from my undergrad that go to OSU so I know people in my class as well as the older students. We've been looking at apartments a lot and plan to visit over spring break (first week of March). Maybe try posting on the facebook group? Once one person says they're looking I'm sure plenty others will as well and you guys could match up personalities/living habits.

Speaking of apartments, do any current students have opinions on Governour's Square and/or Fox & Hound? I think we've narrowed it down to those two, Runaway Bay, and Heritage. Thanks Nstarz and Squirrelsrule for listing the pro/cons again. That was really helpful!

If you join the facebook group for our class that Triton made, there are a lot of people looking for roomates! We are also discussing places to live! The page is https://www.facebook.com/groups/254349824699220/

If living with others, I wouldn't recommend heritage, unless you can get into the buildings with just 4 apartments, the long buildings with lots of apartments in each one are very noisy. Studio building is a big one too, but since it is all studios it is nice and quiet.

Thanks for the tip! I hadn't thought of that.

Hey guys! I posted a roommate survey on our facebook page where everyone can post a little bit about themselves and try to figure out their ideal living situation. (I think I just gave up my secret identity hahah) For those of you interested in finding a roommate, I think it's a great resource, so feel free to add your info and look at your other peers.

Current students who are looking for roomies - Feel free to post you info in the google doc as well!\

If you don't have facebook or aren't in the group, PM me and I'll send you the link to the google doc.

Does OSU use lecture capture to record class? If the school uses it, how many professors actually utilize it? Or are students expected to get missed notes from classmates? Just curious since I inevitably get a big cold/bad flu EVERY year.
