Ohio University (OU-HCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So for the OOS application, it asks us to write a separate essay if we want to go to the Columbus Campus. I'm confused though since the school has a campus in Athens though. Are there any benefits to the Columbus campus?

that's all anyone knows

Personally I'm excited about not having to move all around from years 3-4. From what I understand the campus was designed to keep you training and learning all in the same region in the hopes that you will stay there after graduation. And its got a heavy focus on primary care, so I'm guessing people shooting for the advanced specialties wouldn't want to go there.

So I'm confused...are the "personal statement" and "personal essay" the same thing? They are described in the two paragraphs but don't explicitly say they are separate essays.

"The Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine is interested in finding out more about you as an applicant. To enable us to gain a better understanding of your activities, working experiences, and personal philosophy and their relationship to osteopathic medicine, you are asked to complete a personal statement. Please be open, candid and honest in your responses. Feel free to draw on your school experiences, extra-curricular activities, or working experience as a basis for your answers.

All applicants are required to write a personal essay indicating why you wish to become an osteopathic physician; why you wish to attend the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine; and any additional information you feel the selection committee should know about you.

Are these two different essays or one? I'm conused someone please clarify. And also how does this differ from the personal statement that I wrote initially?

I'll admit to bein confused as well, but then I read a little further...

"Please clearly identify at the top right corner of the page your name and the title of the essay being submitted (e.g. Required Personal Statement or Columbus Campus Statement)"

My deduction was that it is one essay unless you are applying to Columbus, then two.

Ill just call and ask tomm. Ill let you guys know

This is the prompt for the required essay. It is just one essay even though the wording here may seem like two different ones.

The separate essay for the Columbus school has a well defined prompt. Complete it only if you select the Columbus school on your preferences.

Yes this is true. Unless interested in Columbus

Question for meep!! meep!! :

If a student is accepted to OU with spots available in both campuses, will he automatically go to the one which he ranked higher on the supplemental application?

Question for meep!! meep!! :

If a student is accepted to OU with spots available in both campuses, will he automatically go to the one which he ranked higher on the supplemental application?

Super question and the answer is "not necessarily". With the limited number of spots available and the particular central Ohio focus of the Columbus campus, not all who rank it first will be accepted directly into it. The student selection committee will make recommendations based upon your interview if they feel you are a good fit for the goals of the campus. Here are a few scenarios of this could play out:

1. If you ranked Columbus first and the committee feels you are a good fit, then yes, you will be one of the 50 for that campus. If the spots have all been filled, then those students who would have been accepted directly to Columbus will be put on a wait list for that campus. The first one on the list will be the first one off the list.

2. The committee could decide that while you may not be a good match for Columbus, they would still love to see you at OU-HCOM. In that case they will recommend acceptance to Athens. A student in this scenario would not be eligible to be pulled from the wait list for the Columbus campus since they would not have been directly accepted to it even if spots were available.

3. If you are on the wait list for Columbus, you will automatically have a spot in Athens.

Clear as mud, right? Please let me know if further clarification is needed.

This is absolutely correct.:)

Please keep in mind that the essay/personal statement for the secondary application should be different from the one you wrote in the AACOMAS application. The questions we are asking in the secondary are different. The secondary application essay/personal statement also provides an opportunity for you to expand on topics that you may feel need more clarification (e.g. downward grade trends, MCAT testing irregularities, misdemeanors, etc...)

I am sure we will hear all about this during the interview (fingers crossed) but will students at the Columbus campus be taught directly by professors or will we be having to do most classes via online or video conference?

It seems too good to be true to have around 6 professors for only 50 students.

We are striving to provide you with a good mix of live instruction and "remote" instruction. We do plan to have some lectures originate from the Columbus site so that we can provide a balance of times when each campus has the instructor physically in their room.

Good news too is that there will be more than 6 faculty at that site. :) We will have at least 6 biomedical science faculty there, along with 2 faculty from our department of social medicine. There will also be at least 4 clinical faculty there as primary care and osteopathic manipulative medicine specialists.

Thanks for being here Meep Meep. I have a another question: will the Columbus students have more exposure to Doctor's Hospital?

wow! Very glad to hear how well this has been planned out

I think it would be fair to say that. The entire OhioHealth system is our preeminent partner, so Columbus students can expect a decent amount of exposure to Doctor's. Grant, Riverside and Dublin Methodist will also be seeing a lot of our Columbus students.:)

Thank you for the kind words. We have tons of people putting a lot of time and energy into making this an incredible experience for our students. We are very fortunate to have people like we do who care about the details.:)

Will we be contaced via email if we are selected for an interview, or is there a way to check our status online? Thanks!

Does OUHCOM screen heavily pre-secondary? I am excited that I just received one.

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a strong preference for a do letter of rec? I have multiple md but no do letters.

Emailed or phone call. There is no online portal.

My guess is the majority of students receive a secondary, as long as they meet minimum requirments.

Hi,
Does anyone know if there is a strong preference for a do letter of rec? I have multiple md but no do letters.

DO is always preferred, but I don't think it is absolutely required. I am in the same boat as you, no DO letter :( I am hoping they will see past it.

Hello!

Yes, applicants selected for an interview will be notified via email with a follow up letter via regular mail. The selection committee has not invited anyone as of yet, but they should be ready to make initial decisions in the next week or so. Our first interview date is Sept. 13. and will interview pretty much every Friday until the end of April 2014.

For us, a DO letter is strongly preferred, but we certainly do welcome MD letters. If it comes down between two candidates and all other things are equal, a letter from a DO could help tip the scales in a candidate's favor.

How did you guys fill out the pdf form? Did you just print it out and filled it with a pen?

Good to know, thanks!

Something else I was wondering about is how multiple mcat retakes are viewed-- is there an emphasis placed on the most recent or are all considered?

Do you guys know if we can send LORs electronically? e.g. via interfolio and virtual eval

You can use both, or have your letter writers mail their evaluations directly to the school (per the secondary instructions I received).

Is there an MCAT minimum for this place, minimum section score?

I'm submitting my primary this week! I hope it's not too late :/
Anyone know if they send the secondary prior to getting verified?

I submitted my app on 6/27. It was verified on 7/18 and released on 7/25. That same day I got an e-mail from OU-HCOM saying my app was going to go through an "initial review" and the next day (7/26) I got an invitation to complete a secondary. Hope this helps!

Ah, yes. That is a different number altogether. We will send out around 3,000 to 3,200 secondary applications to OOS'ers. Not all who apply are meeting our out of state threshold of either a 3.25 natural science gpa or 24 MCAT, so there is always a portion that we have to immediately reject. All Ohio applicants automatically get a secondary application, so the total we send hovers between 3,800 and 4,000

Let me know if I'm still not getting at your question.:)

D'oh! After I posted this I realized that I did not really answer your question at all. We receive around 3,800 completed applications each year. That includes OOS and in-state.

Hey meep meep! Thanks for answering a lot of questions so far. I do have one of my own, I am an OOS AA student with a decent gpa. 3.67c 3.44s but my mcat was below a 24. I received a secondary application and wanted your opinion on the matter :)

It isn't too late to submit your primary at all! Around the holidays it would be a different story, but you are still in very good shape for consideration. We do have to have your primary application from AACOMAS before we can consider sending a secondary application.

Hope that helps :)

I'm always happy to give my opinion to anyone who will listen :)

Seriously though, the fact that you have a secondary application means that we would like to learn more about you. OOS applicants only have to meet either the 3.25 natural science GPA or a 24 MCAT. You are definitely meeting our threshold, so we'd like to see more.

Hope that helps :)

Multiple MCAT scores can only work to an applicant's advantage in our process. We take the highest sub-score from each eligible test date (meaning anything from January 2011 to January 2014). So, if you go through and tally the highest score you have in the verbal, biological science and physical science sections from all of your tests, that will be the MCAT score that we use in evaluating your application.

Hope that helps :)

Meep meep, when is OU sending out interviews? Also, can you provide info on 3rd and 4th year clerkships? I couldn't find information on the website. What is the rural rotation? Can an urban underserved area serve as this rotation?

Yes. That's what I did.[/QUOTE

I remember reading somewhere that the application needs to be filled electronically. Maybe i am just being neurotic and its not a big deal

No worries, we know this is a stressful process and you just want to do everything right. What we really want is to receive a secondary application that is filled out so we can read it. We've just used a convoluted way of saying "don't handwrite your essay!" If you can fill it out in Word, Adobe, or on a typewriter then we are happy. :)

Hi Meep Meep, do you mind answering a question about DO LOR? I'm an OOS resident with a 3.6 cGPA, 3.7 sGPA, 29 mcat . I only have a MD LOR, how much do you think that will affect my chances? Thank you.

We hope to begin sending out interview invitations by the end of the week. We are exactly one month away from our first interview day (where has the summer gone!).

Our students do their clerkships in our Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education. Check out http://www.ohiocore.org/ to see our hospitals. You can also check out curriculum information on this site http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/academicaffairs/curriculum_resources/studentlinks34.htm. It is written for our current year 3/4 students, but there might be some useful nuggets in there for you too.

We are actually planning both rural and urban rotations. Since the populations are different, they need to be two separate things. We have a special curricular track for students interested in serving underserved areas called the Rural and Urban Scholars Pathway. You can check it out here http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/Admissions/FutureStudents/Scholar.htm.

Hope that helps :)

Glad you asked! You should be completely fine with only an MD letter. What we are trying to glean from a physician letter is that you know what you are getting into, if the physician feels that you can handle the rigor of medical school and if the physician can see you as a future colleague.

The DO letter becomes special because the osteopathic profession really is like a family and the osteopathic clinical faculty on our student selection committee usually have some personal connection with the letter writer. We view a DO letter as an advantage, but the most important thing is that a physician, MD or DO, knows you well enough to write on your behalf.

Hope that helps :)

What about a letter from an OUHCOM alumnus?! :)
