OSU-COM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wow lots of SDN acceptances!!! Could ya'll send your luck my way?! The more I look into it, the more sure I become that I would LOVE to go here!!

Congrats everyone!

It sounds like the early interview acceptance rate is pretty high! Last year, everyone in my round was either waitlisted or rejected.

I feel really optimistic about tomorrow, but if they called people today it'll be a few weeks before they make decisions about my round. The wait is gonna kill me!

👍

we're rooting for you! good luck!

and Denco- hang in there. it's still super early.

Ah i think you got confused! My interview is on Friday!! I'm just hoping I get all the luck everyone else got 🙂

Congrats to everyone accepted thus far!

I met today's prospective applicants and wish everyone luck. I look forward to meeting tomorrows class too.

Back from the interview! It went great, and it was extremely laid back and fun. OSU has such a down-to-earth charm that is so warming.

It was nice to finally meet you, Phlame!

For the rest of you, I confirmed that this was indeed the second three-day week of interviews. The first week was two weeks ago in late October, and then they skipped a week and started up again this week. Hope that helps some of you!

And now..... THE WAIT :scared:

congrats on a great interview... how long did they say we'll have to wait??

Two weeks, but they also said "we'll try to decide before Thanksgiving." That would be Thursday, November 25. Which is, in fact, three weeks from now.

It was pretty reassuring to hear that this was only the second week of interviews, but it doesn't guarantee anything. Stay vigilant and prepare for your interviews!

as long as I know before Dec 15th and I'd have to put a deposit down elsewhere, I'm good 🙂 Sad I won't get to meet you tomorrow considering you are one of the regular posters on here!

You'll know before then. These next two weeks aren't gonna be easy, though :scared:

People were great, had alot of fun. Plan on the same thing tomorrow. See everyone @ 9 or 10, depending on when I skip biochem.

It'll be like you are already in! Itll be a true medical school experience.

Got the acceptance call on Wednesday, was an awesome feeling... congrats to my potential classmates and good luck to the interviewees

Looks like the first week acceptance rate is high. Hope that trend continues for us week 2 people!

Well, I am scheduled for the 12th. I look forward to meeting those of you who are scheduled the same day.

Thanks for all your help today.. Honestly, you and the other students were amazing. I absolutely loved it!

Time to hunker in the Student Doctor bunker! The first interviewees found out their acceptances exactly two weeks later, so I'd probably be expecting ours any time from the 17th onward. They mentioned they'd try to decide before Thanksgiving, which would be nice. If I got in, Thanksgiving would be a lot more enjoyable 😀

You'll probably hear between the 17th and the 19th. They'll get the next round of interviews done and go from there.

oh joy.. right before my finals... that could either be really good or really bad! lol

Just bought myself a snuggie so I can relax at night while I wait 😀

Same here, I'll be the guy with the nappy beard.

Speaking of which, I am curious from current students. I'm a little worried about how the faculty/admission staff will view me with my 2 week old, not completely grown in, facial hair. Any thoughts?

Why not shave? If you're doing it for no-shave November, then use it as a positive thing about how you're commited to goals and are doing it as a fundraiser for a charity or something. They do no-shave november here at OSU as a contest and all proceeds go to St. Judes.

Are there interviews this week or any time soon?

EDIT: Nevermind, saw the 12th listed 🙂

Good luck with the beards, guys. Last time I tried to grow one, it came out red. I don't have red hair. So bizarre.

That is awesome they participate in "no-shave" Novembers for charity. It is for a positive thing, it isn't just me being random. I was just worried due to the fact that with it not fully grown in it really isn't what I'd call "professional".

Tell me about it, my mustache/goatee region grow in black. On my cheeks the hair grows in dirty blond, the same color as my hair. Under my jaw line it groes in red.

It is a bit gross, and hence my concern. My wife loves making hobo jokes, so at least she has gotten that enjoyment out of it.

By the way, Phlame is totally right about Macbooks. I'm probably the most die-hard anti-Apple guy on the planet and I would never buy another laptop brand after owning a Macbook.

Hey Phlame, what's the consensus on buying books? In your opinion, is it really necessary to buy books? I remember getting burned pretty heavily for buying books in college, only to find out that we'd never even need them.

Not to speak for phlame, but I asked the same question (answers on page 2) because the cost on the website was HUGE and I was concerned. Dr. Mom said most of the books were optional, while Phlame responded similiarly said he only spent about $200 in the semester.

Btw, if I haven't said it before Phange, GL on getting that acceptance 👍

Books are mostly optional.
First semester you'll want histology, they're switching editions so you will have to but it. period. Biochemistry is "required" due to required reading, its isn't that bad, so far. Dr. Bensbauch is the one who "uses" it but all his test questions were answerable from notes. You'll want atleast one anatomy atlas (ie netters) but I recommend two: Netters and Rohens. Thats about it for first semster that I got.

Some people also purchase wheaters for histology and some purchase an additional book for the embryology portion of Anatomy, but I got neither and am doing just fine.

Thanks! I'm still not sure what to think about getting such an early interview. Like I said before, in the past I always interviewed in February or March and I had to cling to hope more than actual odds of getting in. I've failed to get into medical school six times, but OSU is my No. 1 choice so needless to say I'm really holding on tight to next week's decisions.

I know early interviews are traditionally a very good sign, but in the med school admissions process there are no guarantees (believe me, I've learned). I'm feeling optimistic but I'm also trying not to get my hopes up too high, you know?

EDIT: It was covered somewhat in the campus tour, but do most professors post their powerpoint slides online? I've always had the best study luck when I can make flash cards based on professors' powerpoints.

Every professor thus far has atleast done slides in powerpoint and notes in a PDF or .Doc file. Some professors in addition to the previous stuff also to integrated OneNote packets for those who use it.

Later professors may do different, but I don't know for sure. I know Goljian has recorded all of his summary lectures that can viewed online both for the purposes of board review and class review. He also has his entire board review series recorded and online for access. He is going to retire anytime due to some issues of his own, but he enjoys teaching so much that it seems like he will be teaching until he is physically unable.

Had a great day at OSU today. Thanks Phlame for giving so much time to talk to the interviewees. Hoping for good news before Thanksgiving!

did they tell ya'll two weeks as well?

Yep. I think they have one more interview/selection period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That was overheard from the tail end of a conversation though.

Wait, did calls go out today? That's pretty unusual given that it's Veteran's Day (and they generally stick to the two week schedule).

I didn't ask much but I got it about an hour and a half ago.
