PCOM (Philadelphia) Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Navyrick, just wanted to say i'm sorry. Your news put a real sour spot in my day as well. It looks like I too maybe waitlisted, and am sorry you have to go through all of this. Hopefully things work out. Sorry again man, I would also appreciate that others who hear back could post they at least heard back, and if you don't mind, possibly your decision. Thanks again.

Waitlisted, which I think we all know is a rejection at this point...

3.5 GPA
33P MCAT

Damn.

thanks for the words, kabirm. i guess medhopefull has the best advice--put a smile on and hope.

best of luck to you, too..
Hey guys so I got the bad news today. Officially waitlisted, and there goes my week. Sucks.

Waitlisted also.. What a bummer. Kind of figured though -- I wonder if anyone got good news today?

So -- how does an unranked waitlist work?

Sorry to hear about the waitlist 🙁. Maybe try sending in a letter of intent? Word on the street is that PCOM tries to find an applicant on the waitlist a lot like the applicant that withdrew...but this is just according to what i've read previously on SDN. good luck!:luck::luck:

I asked them about that, and they said that basically once someone gives up a seat, they look at all the waitlisted applicants again to choose one. It's actually kinda better than a rank system, because in a rank system you tend to forget the people who are lower ranked. PCOM wants to look at the overall applicant, so this way if you're waitlisted, it's not like you're going to forever be on the bottom of the pile.

Thanks for the reply. You're right, the system seems a bit more fair this way! I hope the waitlist isn't too big, but, from the looks of this forum -- it looks like it might be.

OMG!!! I finally heard something from PCOM. An email telling me the interview season has concluded and the my final decision will arrive by letter. Hmm...since I haven't heard a peep since I submitted my secondary in September, I wonder what it will be...

Same here! Are you as anxious as I am for the automatic-no-interview-required-sorry-bout-not-sending-you-****-for-the-last-eight-months acceptance letter?!?! :xf:

Man, I'm so confident about the automatic-no-interview-required-sorry-bout-not-sending-you-****-for-the-last-eight-months acceptance letter that I've withdrawn my LECOM acceptance and cut my current trip to Erie short so that I can fly from Erie to Philly and look at apartments 🙄

does anyone know if a c- is okay to get in prereq courses. I got an A in orgo 1 and a c- in orgo 2.. will my application stl be looked at?

i'm pretty sure I got a C- in one of the pre-req chem classes and it worked for me. They will compare it to the rest of the application. I think they brought it up in my interview..I mentioned something about how challenging the class was and I was "happy" about the C, or made some sort of joking remark about it in a way. They were impressed about my postbac acheivements and upward trend so it wasn't a problem. It's worth applying and seeing what happens...but make sure their requirements weren't changed. I had to email a few different adcoms when I applied to see if it would be a problem. One or 2 said it was no good. I could live w/o retaking it since my top choices didn't care.

thanks so much! I tried e-mailing a few schools, but no responses yet..

OMG...REJECTED😱 I never saw it coming🙄

At least I finally got the PCOM closure I wanted, even though it only took 8 months to finally hear something👎

Anyhow, good luck to everyone. I just may run into some of you PCOMers during 3rd and 4th year rotations throughout PA.

I am wishing there was 5/15 deadline for DO schools too so that we would see some movement on the waitlist!

I think mid June is when the second deposit of 1500 is due, so that's when we're going to see the most movement for the waitlist. Fingers crossed!

My second deposit was due on April 15th (I remember bc I had to make my decision by then and ultimately withdrew)....I believe I was accepted in January so there must be a few different dates, perhaps the 15th's of the months are the dates for deposits for different groups so you might hear even sooner....good luck!

Yeah, whoever was accepted before April 15th, the $1500 was due on April 15th. For those accepted after April 15th, I heard both deposits are due ASAP (the website).

Does anyone know how the Federal Direct loan works? Our tentative aid package shows in nucleus for all of our federal sub/unsubsidized loans but what do we have to do to get our direct loans rolling?

federal direct loans are the new stafford loans, correct?

From my interpretations of what the school told me, the Stafford Loans is still Stafford, but the your GRADPlus loans are Direct Loans now. So basically you go to StudentLoans.gov and use your pin that you got from filling out the FAFSA and apply for gradplus loans. You choose a lender, and the lender gives that money directly to the school to you, versus giving it to the gov then the school then to you.

Does anyone know when we'll actually get our Financial Aid packages? I don't think I have any outstanding requirements per Nucleus. Has anyone gotten their financial aid package yet?

I'd call and ask but everytime I call FinAid the women is rude to me and acts like I am wasting her time.

Pardon me for intruding, but as an incoming PA student who was accepted in September, I didn't get my FA package until last week, three weeks before class starts. The PA students have had quite a go-around with financial aid. Hopefully they will be a little more on the ball with you guys!

You mean when will you actually get the money?

Last year it depended on what lender you had, but I got mine about a week before school started. I think some people didn't get their money until a week or 2 after school started.

I'm not sure if that's changing now that everything is through the Direct Loan Process.

Whenever fall 1st trimester money is due, it'll be paid through the student loan to PCOM and then whatever is left over will be direct deposited into you bank account.

I got accepted to PCOM today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so pumped...looking forward to seeing you guys in Philly!

Congrats!! =) Hopefully, I'll hear similar news soon! Just curious.. did you recieve a letter/phone call/email?

Also got an acceptance letter in the mail on Friday 🙂

Hello PCOM applicants/students,

I clicked on the link in Chocolate Beat's signature, where it lists which school's require DO letters of recommendation. And it says PCOM requires a Dean's letter? Is this true?

Anyone know what PCOM's cost of attendance is? Some people were telling me it's in the 50K's, but it can't be that low, right?

It's definitely not in the 50's because tuition is about 40K this year. I think a student said it was in the low to mid 60K's last year so I would expect around 65K as well.

You statement doesnt make sense to me. First you said the tuition is about 40K, then you said you expect it to be around 65K?

So what is the tuition? Is it 40K or 65K?

I was referring to COA. Tuition is ~40K

Hey all,

To those who have been accepted off waitlist, did you submit anything extra after finding out that you were waitlisted? I have submitted in an extra LOR and a LOI. I have a total of 7 LOR on file. PCOM is my first choice school, and I know that there is only about a month left, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If anyone could reply or send me a private message with advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Did anyone talk to the admissions committee in person? I live close and was thinking about going in to meet with the committee if that is even possible.

Hi I was just taken off the waitlist last Monday. When I found out that I was put on the waitlist I sent in a LOI too. I also did the biomed program at PCOM so I have been going in and talk to the admissions every other week just to let them know I was still interested and so they also knew my face, so it would definitely be possible for you to do that. Another friend, who is now a second year there, said he used to send in a short LOI every other week as well to let them know he was still interested. Also, last year a girl wasn't taken off the waitlist until the second day of classes. There's still hope 🙂 Good luck!

thanks for the reply. out of curiousity, does anyone know how many people are waitlisted?

navyrick, may I ask what you discussed when you called? I called a few times with general questions.

Thank you for the response navyrick. I sent in another LOR last Friday and hopefully that helps me! I would love to go to PCOM, crossing my fingers a seat opens up. Has anyone been taken off the waitlist lately?
