Penn c/o 2016 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i dont think ive been on SDN for about...5 months?! lol im not sure. But I came on to post some uplifting vids from skit night!

We're all chilling on Facebook admiring everyone's foster animals :-D

:hello:

btw, i'm admiring all those foster kittens on the facebook page...me wants one! 😍

I'm just thankful people haven't started posting foster dogs. We specifically signed a lease in a no dogs allowed building because I would be so tempted to adopt a little pitty girl and then I'd never have time for her and we'd both be sad.

Those kittens are super cute though!

i'm super tempted to adopt a pitty too 🙁 the ACCT program has some great sounding dogs....i'm pretty sure i won't have time for a dog in school but i want one so bad! i think a cat is a great compromise though...and require less time than a dog.

I'm hoping to make friends with people who have adorable pitties that I can spoil rotten and take for hikes on the weekends!

I'm also planning to bring our giant leash-trained kitty to happy hours, and I'm positive he will make many dog friends.

I'm sure you'll meet many you can borrow during happy hour.

And I have a potentially interesting phone conversation set up for Friday about my application.

Okay, I HAVE to see this. Do you have pics???

I just adopted a 1 yo lab-chow puppy, so if you (or any pennwe) ever want adorable snuggles you're welcome to borrow her 😍. She's a little crazy, but she is a sweetheart and even plays nicely (supervised) with my rabbit.

Can one of the current students comment on what orientation is like? I don't really get what we're doing for several days before classes start. Are they just "bonding activities"?

That's sufficiently vague to pique my curiosity.

Good luck! :xf:

Basically you have 2 days in Philly where you pretty much just listen to different presentations from the administration, the PVMA, the safety people, the transit people, the health center people, etc. You also get lunch and some activities. Then you have a day out at New Bolton that is more fun and you do group building activities (no ropes though). I loathe most group bonding activities but I liked the orientation ones well enough.

I'm not a big fan of these kinds of events, but even I feel this is a little bit of a negative view of the first 2 days.

Yeah, there are some boring presentations, although some of them will be helpful to know in the end. You will get to know at least a group of people really well, will learn your way around the school a little, and it was all kind of exciting.

The 3rd day is kind of fun, but I was exhausted at the end. You will need a couple days to recover.

Plus there a lot of evening social events to get an early start of drinking and socializing.

Nothing too serious, just a few days to ease you into your new life.

I didn't say anything bad about it 😕 Someone wanted to know what happened during orientation.

I didn't include the night stuff because I didn't go and can't comment on what it's like, plus I don't consider it orientation since it's optional and not school sponsored, just various social events.

Does this mean you've made your decision, Orca?😀
Or is living situation part of your decision? How long did they give you to make a decision anyway?

They need my deposit by Friday and I guess I pretty much have decided, at least in my head. Nothings finalized yet in regards to paperwork and all that. The cost of the two schools are relatively the same since Illinois' tuition for OOS is like $42k, at least according the spreadsheet on here. I haven't done any major number crunching myself yet, although I will today or tomorrow. Also, since I'm only going to be 1.5 hours away from home it will be easier for me to get help from my family if I'm ever in some sort of major bind or just want to come home for a weekend or something like that.

I'm so thrilled this has worked out for you. It's like a big fairytale :biglove:

Possibly stupid question and I'll call next week if no one knows, but thought I'd ask her first since it's the weekend and I haven't found an answer on the website, although I'm horrible at navigating school websites for whatever reason.

Do any of you use the insurance provided by the school? My current insurance doesn't cover things like suicide attempts and all that stuff they want covered, so I'm considering taking the school insurance. Is that $7,000 per year or for all four years?

Yes I have it and it is about 3k per year.

FWIW I like the student insurance a lot. I don't go to the doctor much or anything but it's covered everything I've needed it to, and it covers the rabies shots first year.

I have the student insurance, have had serious medical issues this year and have been mostly pretty satisfied. First off, Penn's health system is amazing. It has huge breadth an depth, is one of the best hospital systems in the country and is really well run (which was not true even 10 years ago). There is almost no reason to have any service done outside the system.

And they work really well with Aetna, so there are few problems you hear of so often with insurance companies.

When my hospital stay was extended from 3 to 4 and then 5 days, I wasn't involved and it was all taken care of.

I strongly recommend it.

Possibly another stupid question and I'll call tomorrow after work if no one has any ideas. I'm a little behind on all the financial aid forms and am filling out the institutional aid form to fax either tomorrow or Tuesday in that hopes that money hasn't run out by now.

One of the questions asks what type of incoming student you are, class entering in the summer of 2012 or September 2012. My mom and I just think the wording is really weird because summer to us means like May but the vet school starts August 27th, so it's not quite September. Any thoughts on which to check off for those who have submitted the form already? And like I said, if no one knows, I'll call tomorrow, I'd just rather fax the forms sooner rather than later.

i'm about 99% sure that summer refers to people who would be taking summer classes, and that you should check "september."

Okay, I have another question for you all. I've looked through the past threads and was just wondering what streets I should use to limit my searches. I've heard various things and kind just wanted to get more opinions to see what to go by. A Penn Grad student told me not to go past 42nd, but I've seen places on 47th and that area seemed to be okay, although I think I would like to try to stay a little closer to the vet school and but got the impression from current students that up to 47th/48th Street is okay.

What about streets to the South and North? I live 1.5 hours from Philly and while I'm somewhat familiar with the area, I'm not super familiar. I've been told to not really go past Market, although I would think the areas closer to Drexel are okay and that Baltimore Ave can be a bit iffy. I've found some apartments on Chester Ave that look okay (at least online), but when I was down there last, we didn't really drive around that area. Any thoughts?

It's very block-by-block here so it's hard to give particular numbers or street names. Some places are not ok past 39th; some places are fine out past 50th.

I made a map for a couple people on here showing what, in my opinion, are relatively safe and walkable locations; if you PM me your email address I'll see if I can find it!

ETA: I know a couple places up for July rent near where I live. It's a little "on the edge" so I wouldn't recommend it to people that are apprehensive or have never lived in a city. BUT I have a great landlord and a great price... feel free to PM me about that.

Bunnity is pretty accurate (but I wouldn't go past 50th anywhere.... I guess she is braver than I am).

As for not past 42nd street, that advice is about 20 years old. I can't imagine anyone making a blanket statement like that. Certainly anything south of walnut that is not true.

I am sure Bunnity's map is great... you should use that.

A large proportion of the vet students live between 41st and 48th from Spruce to Baltimore

Thanks you guys! I got Bunnity's map and will be using that as my starting point. And I reread my message from the one person and she said don't go past 45th, not 42nd. Whoops.

If you go down to Cedar/Larchwood etc. you can go past 50th. Kind of a moot point since it gets less realistic as far as walking to class though.

Like SOV said, blanket statements aren't super useful. For example, right now I live at 38th (but north of Market) and it is way sketchier here than when I lived at 47th (south of Spruce).

I use this map when planning my running routes: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?oe=u...482,-75.172577&spn=0.228537,0.528374&t=h&z=12

I make no claims as to it's accuracy... but it serves my purposes. I've run as far west as 52nd St., and that was a little sketchier (map shows orange). I tend to stay east of 50th and south of Market until I get closer to Center City. You can see the city change as you drive west on Walnut St. Several of my friends from Penn's undergrad haven't been west of about 45th st, mainly b/c it becomes residential. I live around 47th St. because I wanted security and for some reason a security person at the front desk is rare west of center city (well, mine is the only not-fancy place).

I mean, I hope you do too obviously, but since I'm most likely not bringing a dog to school, I'll need to find someone to play with on occasion.

Hopefully someone in your class will adopt him... win-win!

Just wanted to share my foster dog with you guys!

He's a super awesome Cane Corso mix, human and dog friendly, super sweet big dumb boy. 😍

I can vouch for bunnity's taste in foster animals because I have the coolest bunny chilling in my apartment from her!😍👍

I never thought a bunny could be described as "cheeky" but he cracks me up.

Do you have more bunny fosters too?
