Philadelphia COM - Georgia (GA-PCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Quick question, if you apply to PCOM in the Philadelphia location do you also get a secondary for the Georgia location? I just received a PCOM Georgia secondary randomly! Now I am enticed to fill it out..

No, they are separate schools, two separate applications, two fees, two secondaries, etc There was a mistake somewhere.

What day of the week does the ADCOM meet for this school? I have my app complete as of 11/8, but im inclined to call to see if they have everything. Sometimes when they do that you'll get a status update. I really want to aim for all Janurary interviews so I can have one epic month of traveling.

check the Philadelphia thread before you call - they don't supply status updates, it was in their email and we can check what they have for our files.

How long does it take PCOM-GA to receive your application and send you their secondary application? And how long after they receive your secondary application do they send you an interview invite? Thank you.

It will probably take a week or two to get the secondary after you submit your primary. The best case scenario is that you get it a couple of days later. They confirm when they receive all your materials fairly quickly. As for receiving an interview...it could happen a few weeks after they get your secondary or months after. There's not really a time frame in which to "expect" an invite.

Can any PCOMGA students comment on the attendance policy here? And are recorded lectures and a note taking service established?

I will be attending, but never been to a class yet. From interview day what I know is that we do have recorded (video) lectures made available the same day and the attendance policy is few mandatory lectures. I think all labs are mandatory (anatomy,OMM)

TXKnight is correct. I think guest lectures are the only mandatory ones.

Also want to remind everyone that was accepted that we have a Facebook page for the Class of 2018.

Got a secondary from here on Friday.. Do yo guys have any idea if they require a DO letter besides the pre-med committee letter?

From the school's FAQ:

Q. Do I need a letter of recommendation from a D.O.?
A: No, a letter from a D.O. is not required but is strongly recommended.

I only read the email that they sent me.. thank you for the info I appreciate it.

No probs. Information on specifics for the school are rather hard to find. I think they would certainly benefit from an improved website and more transparency on their requirements and program.

I agree... i just arranged for my DO letter to go out to them, now just have to send a check in the mail tomorrow. By the way, on that secondary application prompt,,,i talked about a philanthropy event that I organized to raise money to help a whole community,, not just "one" individual person. I hope they accept it.. I could not think of doing something that affected one specific person..

I wrote about how I volunteered in house-repair project that directly affected a "family." So I think helping a whole community rather than just one individual should be fine.

Hopefully you will hear back from PCOM-GA soon and become one of our future classmates. Good luck!

How does PCOM respond to Letter of Intents, as in, is it appropriate before any status update or am i just a little too ahead of myself. I never really received a complete email, but I know everything was submitted around the beginning of October Now that it's been over a month, can I send a letter of Intent? Would it be too soon/should I wait to at least get on hold first?

Did you receive notification that they received your secondary? That was the only email I received from them prior to my interview invite.

Those of you that have been accepted and have decided to matriculate here, what made you decide on PCOM-GA (aside from family)?

I'm almost 99% sure I'm going there. Well, they just seem to be an adequate school... Nothing less and nothing more. They have lax dress code and attendance and it is in a freakin awesome town. The only con I have is that I don't feel like they are really tryin to do everything they can to make students pass boards. For instance, ACOM pays for everyone to take the practice comlex after every semester, which is something I really like. I could be totally wrong about pcom not preparing us enough. Afterall in the end,, it is really us who determines our board scores

The general vibe from all the students/faculty on interview day sold me- also the fact that you have 24/7 access to the cadaver lab for studying and no strict dress codes... Lastly I would LOVE to train at some of the hospitals mentioned in a previous post within the J track, I have a friend that is a first year there now and he absolutely loves it. Lastly I love that they print the ppts for the students for each new lecture I learn much better writing notes on the ppt print outs so for me that was a huge plus!

Also I did ask my interviewers and they do provide a board prep for students at the end of second yr

I had no idea they do that. Cool! Is it kaplan BTW?
I asked and he said they have switched a few times so whatever is considered good at the time they go to purchase is what they end up with but he described it much like a Kaplan prep but maybe not Kaplan per say

I liked the laid back and close-knit feel of the school that I got from the interview day. I also love that they put up lectures/notes/power points online so you can "attend" every lecture without ever going to class. That was a big perk for me, because i have a little one on the way so if I need to stay home with the baby then I can watch the lecture and everything. I guess it just seems like a good fit

Happy (almost) Thanksgiving everyone!! Couldn't find a turkey, but here's an owl--just don't eat it. :owle:
What's everyone doing? We're cramming 14 family members and 5 dogs in the same house. Looking forward to it! :=|:-):

The feeling that I got from every student that I encountered during the interview day was that they were all very happy to be there. The atmosphere was very comfortable.

I absolutely did not want to go to a medical school in a rural area, and the campus is 30 minutes from downtown Atlanta. Property/rental prices are cheap (at least compared to where I am now), there's a lot of parks nearby, and the surrounding school districts are very good.

I grew up in the south and cheap rent to me is maybe 400 a month utilities included. Looking at the apartments around PCOMGA they all seem to be in the 650-1000 a month range. I guess that's what roommates are for.

Well, it's certainly going to be more expensive near Atlanta than rural Alabama. But, compared to what I've paid here in FL, I can nearly three times the square footage for the same price per month.

Am I supposed to get a confirmation email after I email them back confirming my interview? They said they would email me something after I confirmed the date, but I'm not sure how long until that email goes out.

You should get a confirmation back, but give them a few extra days to respond because of the holidays.

Does anyone know how hard it is to get a specific anchor site that ISN'T in ATL? Wondering if it would be possible to lease our current house out for 2 years, then start rotations down here?

On our interview day the question of rotation sites came up several times, and all they really told us was that you state your preference and they try their best to accommodate that, and they take into consideration things like family. So I guess it all depends on whether or not a lot of people want the same anchor track as you.

Yea, I'd say the Courtyard. I stayed at the Hyatt Place near the Gwinnett Mall and that will probably be the last time I stay at a Hyatt Place.

I stayed at Wingate by Wyndham.

Lots of food places nearby, only like 5-10 minute drive to PCOM-GA, quiet, and not too expensive.

I thought it was pretty decent stay, overall.

For some reason this thread doesn't pop up on my notifications anymore lol. This is great. Thanks a lot Carl

Interviewing here tomorrow!! Anybody with tips and opinions of the school not previously mentioned?

I think if you read the thread, you're probably all set. Just be yourself, smile, and be professional and polite. It'll go well.

yes, i double checked and noticed I received the receipt Sept 25. When I called them, they didn't seem as helpful as other schools when it came to inquires. That's why I'm curious if they even accept it.
