Philadelphia COM - Georgia (GA-PCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't want to sound like I'm complaining. The school itself impressed me in almost every way. I guess I was just looking for a con to throw out.

I'm not sure about the tuition, but it seems typical that schools charge a few thousand more each year. I would hate to know what tuition rates will be in 15 years. It's still about average for a lot of the schools I applied to so I guess it's not bad. I did think about LECOM for the lower tuition, but I don't think I could stand a school that requires attendance, has a dress code, no drinks in class, etc. I imagine myself spending my days wearing sweatpants in the library.
Yea I have to agree with you. Does anyone know what type of computer we will use?

I know some schools with high tuition gives out computers... Does that apply for PCOM-GA?

By the way, I can join the PCOM-GA Class of 2018 now! Hooray for acceptance!

Thay said wahtever computer you like-but they are supposed to send the specs?

I think any computer will do the trick you just need decent video card, RAM and HD. Any new laptop sold now will work i think. As for me I don't like win8, maybe I'll just use a linux machine like I've done for years now.

congrats man!

No the tuition does it include a computer- it does however include the software which can be installed onto a Mac or PC I asked during my interview day, and for the previous posters yes a 96% board pass rate is stellar in my eyes ... In regards to that small 4% that didn't pass or the few who do not graduate there are usually personal reasons involved. Overall the rest of the class is doing well and placing in a wide range of specialties for residency which is a good indicator

so do you guys think one can just do rotations in or around ATL and stay in one place for th whole 4 yrs? Also, do you consider the rotation sites to be high quality? I really don't want to move for rotations...

I would also really like to see some stats as far as board scores and pass rates. I know they don't really mean much but when they aren't published anywhere and are imposible to find I almost have to wonder why? Someone has to have the info. Would it be OK to call and ask?

They said that the "J-Track" has 10 or so sites in the Atlanta area, which take 5-6 students each. So, basically, half of the class will stay in Atlanta. That's a big issue for me as well because I totally cannot move away from my wife and kids for rotations, nor can I move my wife and kids around a bunch with me, since my wife will be in medical school as well.

so those who dont "lottery"into the J track are forced to move ? Maybe they will see who wants to move first so that the majority of those who move away actually want to, increasing the chances for those who want to stay to stay and rotate. It's sort of confusing , but not really.

i did some searching and found that no school ( MD /DO) is required to release board scores..that 96% was from 2008, so do we consider that as significant? from what I found, Lecom-B has the highest avg. board scores of over 530. Take it for what its worth lol

What I heard is that LECOM has 100% pass rate because if you fail a certain number of times, you're out. So, technically, everyone passes the boards.

I hope they (GA-PCOM) some sort of system in place for people who simply cannot move. In hindsight, it seems a little strange that they weren't super forthcoming with the list of rotation sites and stuff. They always said, "well, the sites change from year to year." Okay... well show me what they currently are anyway. Hmmm...

Couldn't have said it better. It is hard to make a decision with very little information.

what do you guys/galsl think is better for families, j-track or anchor sites? I heard conflicting info at the interview some said jtrack b/c all in the ATL area, but one more person told me anchor, because all the rotations are at a single site?...

I wouldn't bet on it, seeing as you are assigned by a lottery system. I don't know if they allow students to switch after they are assigned (assuming both students agree), but that seems like the only possible way if they fill all available rotation sites with students (I'm not sure if they do that).

The rotation quality is the biggest deal breaker for me, and I'm not 100% confident from what I've heard so far about PCOM-GA. I wish they posted more information on the website. I know the Philly campus has more information regarding clinical rotations on the website, which is extremely helpful.

Can a current student chime in (in detail if possible 😀) about the different tracks, family, etc?

I'm going to email the coordinator of clinical education for the GA campus and ask her for a site list for the J-Track(s).

Having so much difficulty locating one is a little disconcerting.

Can you please copy/paste the list here if you get one?

For those wondering I have heard doing anchor tracks are easier for families bc all your rotations are in a smaller vicinity (ex: Rome ga) whereas the J track you might still have to move around some bc "Atlanta" is a huge area and it isn't reasonable to drive/commute 1-2 hours for some if the sites included in the J track however housing for these farther locations is included and provided for the student only (which is why they said this might not be ideal for someone with a family)

Okay, here's a list of sites within GA. I'm not sure if it's this years list, but I think it may be last years at the most. There may be a few sites missing and I didn't organize them by geography, so you'll have to dig through and see which ones are within the Atlanta metro area. But, looking at the list, I think I feel quite a bit better. I can post the complete list with out of state and anchor sites if people want.

The bolded ones are major hospitals or sites within the Atlanta area that I know of.

Thanks a lot! I hope a ton of these are within driving distance of the school. I can't spend two years traveling and staying at extended stays.

The ones that I bolded are within the metro area. Most of the others, I suspect, are within 1.5 to 2 hours. Still quite a commute, but I'd pick that over living away from my family.

Thanks for the work Carl. It looks like we should have our eyes on the Gwinnett county hospital in Lawrenceville... If at all possible. I have a very basic question: what is the purpose of away rotations? Is it because it turns out that in order to do a good rotation in a competitive specialty, one has to travel in order to do so, or is it simply because it is far "away?" . This slightly confuses me.

My understanding is that away rotations occur for three primary reasons.

1. Most away rotations seem to be in community health centers and more rural areas, and there is a large focus on providing care in underserved communities. DO schools largely seem to put emphasis on rural medicine, so those community settings address that as well.

2. They have to limit the number of students at each site to ensure each student gets adequate clinical exposure and training. That means schools have to affiliate with those centers further away from the immediate area, so they tend to expand out into those more rural areas.

3. Some away rotations at large, out-of-area sites are the result of agreements with different colleges, universities, and affiliated healthcare networks. This can supposedly benefit the students by providing more diverse range of options for electives, but since there seems to be some regionally bias regarding residencies, those long-distance affiliations may be beneficial. For example, say GA-PCOM had some affiliated site that you did rotations at in CA, and there was a residency you were interested in out there. A solid LoR from a preceptor you were under during that rotation you did out in CA may help when it comes time to interview for that residency. That's my understanding, but it seems logical to me.

Sometimes med students will use ", away" and "audition" interchangeably. In this case "away" is exactly what Carl mentioned

This is sort of what I was thinking. I have also read two opposing things: 1. Someone said doing rotations where it's just you and the attending allows you to get a better experience and do more hands on, even first assisting with surgery. 2. Someone else said it's better to rotate with some residents.

Idk which one is better, but I'm sure we will have it all straightened out before 3rd year.

Yea the reason I'm confused is because my brother went to LSU and I recently asked him if he rotated at LSU only, and he said he did rotations in AL and AR for 4th year. I was confused why he chose to go that far, maybe it was because he was doing ENT rotations, idk. I figured LSU would provide all the necessary rotations. Then again, I'm just a total newbie at all this stuff. Lol

From what I know, the more competitive specialties and more desirable areas, audition rotations greatly benefit. Especially if you get a letter from where ever you're rotating.
So if you have plans to moving to NYC, which is generally regarded as a place a lot people would like to go for residency, rotating in NYC would only help you when applying.

Carl Seitan, could you please post the OOS rotations list? It would be very helpful and interesting to see. Thanks in advance!

Awesome info. Where did you find it? Thanks!!

I agree with the previous poster- away rotations or electives are your chance to go to potential places you plan to apply to residency programs and really leave a good impression in hopes that a good LOR or memory of you will strike their adcom when the time comes for them to pick/rank residents. It's also a chance for you as a student to continue to learn/participate in the field of your interest and become as prepared as possible so that you make a decent first year resident. Lastly I think it's just to see that you can adapt to change. Your career as a physician will involve constant changes in technology, medicine and even hospitals if you choose to float around to a few places. Being in a new place where you have 4 weeks in a brand new hospital where you don't know where anything is can be intimidating/frustrating so performing well at away rotations show your adaptable in my eyes.

Can someone send me a link to the Facebook group? Thanks.

Interview via email this morning!!! So surprised and excited. December 9th, so not too far out yet.
