Ah, but you see these are examples where someone is ACTING on the stereotype. They are dismissing your insight solely because of your sex, without knowing anything about your ability/talent/knowledge.. etc. This IS a classic case of sexism.say i'm hanging around watching a hockey game with friends who know that i know the game. i comment about something we're watching in the game and one of my friends is like "yeah whatever girls don't know hockey" hilarious right i can laugh at that because i'm pretty sure the person knows otherwise.
say i'm refereeing a high school boys game now. i call a penalty, one of the coaches disagrees (because they pretty much always do). so same exact comment, different context, not so hilarious. i'm getting paid to do a job and solely because of my outward appearance i'm being marginalized. or hell, just even say i'm watching the game with people who i don't really know that well and the same comment is made. or i'm talked over or ignored. these are things that really happen. and they are because of the exact same pervasive attitude that is conveyed in the joke that a friend of mine might have made earlier. .
I agree with you on that.
On the other hand, if I say women generally don't know much about sports, especially hockey. That is not sexist. The bigots use their stereotypes to pre-judge people.
I don't think LIS was doing that. He was talking generalities.
By the way, I have lived overseas as a minority so maybe I have a little more insight than the typical white male of privilege?
