RANT HERE thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hugs, elk. So, I realize you have heard this from multiple people, but schools know life happens. The dismissal will not hold you back. It is just like the advice we give people here all the time that have had some undergrad hardships. You can get through this, but you have to find your ways to cope. I am so glad that you use SDN as an outlet so we can do our best to build you back up when you feel lost in the dark.

Life doesn't have a set course, so don't worry about age and numbers and where you feel you should be at this point in life. It may feel like the norm is to be all settled by thirty, but that is actually not as common as it used to be as people choose to meander through life trying out different things. It isn't the forced norm anymore to be settled in some job and raising a family. Look at how many of us here are at completely different stages even as we are hitting 40 and above.

I know these dark thoughts force their way into our brains and we dwell on all the fear and depression from the past, but do your best to enjoy the present, and dare to dream of the future. Perhaps one of your friends that isn't your bestie that is close to you can become more if you let them in. I definitely think you would do well to have a physical presence that helps drag you out here and there or just sits and enjoys doing nothing in particular. I think it can be difficult as a lot of people won't end up being a great friend in the end simply due to human nature, but if you keep your heart open, you never know what unlikely person will end up meaning a great deal, who sticks with you through thick and thin.

In the meantime, here is some internet luv from the Lupes.

@Elkhart Going on here and venting is great to get your feelings out. Talking to your peers about it is great too. But have you ever considered going to a therapist and a psychiatrist? It’s not for everyone, and I understand if it’s not an option. But in the end, that’s the only thing that actually helped me long term. I tried to handle things on my own but I just would get to a good place in my life for maybe a year or less and then something else would happen. I’d spiral downward and feel like I was drowning with no lifeline. Once I started going to therapy and got put on a medication regimen that worked for me, I started feeling much more consistently happy and prepared to deal with negatives in my life. I haven’t been in your shoes exactly, but I’ve been close. I don’t say this because I think anyone doesn’t want to hear what you have to say or because your incapable of taking care of yourself. It felt like that when people were telling me to get help. I’m saying it because it’s the only thing that actually helped me personally. Maybe it would be a good fit for you too. But regardless, my PM box is always open as well if you ever need to talk to someone who has struggled greatly with anxiety and depression and who almost gave up multiple times.

Last Thursday, the guy who’s going to do the pre-purchase appraisal on my condo called me at the end of the work day. I was working, surprise, so I didn’t pick up the call. I called back and left a message on Friday. The guy didn’t return the call until Monday afternoon where we set up a time. The first time he threw out was this Thursday and I agreed.

Well, tonight my parents called me and said they got a message from the loan rep. at the bank about the timeline for the closing paperwork changing. Why? “The appraisal got delayed because the tenant moved the date of the appraisal.”

Um, I’m the current tenant. There was no other date.

This might be an interesting meeting with this guy tomorrow.

You guys are all amazing. Thank you so, so much (especially those who checked in on me via FB and PM). I appreciate you so much and I honestly don't know what I'd do without SDN as an outlet.
This may seem odd from a random internet stranger, but I’m so proud of you Elk. Keep on keeping on.

Elk, hang in there. Bipolar can be a roller coaster. I not only heard the stories about my grandfather (way before there was medicine) and I have watched my brother-in-law fight it, too. the medications can take some time to even things out, and even then, sometimes adjustments have to be made. But it can all come together.

Blah. Packing up to start job on the first and due to leave tomorrow. Of course as is our vet curse, my kitten woke me up vomiting at 4 this morning. There was a hair ball and some grass, so I gave him the rest of the morning. Alas, he did not perk up and is painful on palpation. Rads it is since he likes rubber bands and no telling with this packing nonsense that he didn’t find himself a treasure. Harrumph.

Goddamn it, first zigs cat, then Pips, now yours. I’m hovering over mine like a hawk now.

Hope your kitty feels better soon!

Worried that we might have to add me to this list. I have two cats, one of which is asthmatic. But it was the other one coughing this morning....

Must be in the air and all the cats think they need to jump off the cliff together in solidarity. Of all the times to be a follower. heh

What the f:rage::rage:k is wrong with youtube. Everytime I watch a youtube video there's an unskipable ad and then right after that there's another ad. It drives me nuts! Just another way to make more money I guess.
Fun fact: I can skip all YouTube adds (even the ones you shouldn't be able to skip) on my MacBook Pro because I can fast forward through them on the touchbar. It is very excellent

We had a huge discussion about this in school - good pain control is good medicine and there is no real benefit to letting patients feel pain so they "guard the wound" or "stay calm". I would say this is doubly true for hideously painful things like back injury, where you can definitely hurt other things by avoiding movements that exacerbate the back pain and that cause significant quality of life issues without pain control.

Sorry everything seemed to go wrong this weekend! Glad you are on the mend and hopefully you can enjoy your pool time without distractions soon 🙂
There are still MDs (and DVMs) who think people should "tough it out" my dad broke his foot and they didn't give him anything because "the pain would make him move less". It's like, come on people!!

My cat has also been having a mess of issues lately....asthma, GI issues, arthritis flares, allergy flares and lately constipation. But I loves her. She's probably up to around $2k in bills over the past few months. Worth every penny.

Hope all the kitties be feeling better soon.

Jumping on the sick cat bandwagon. My 12 year old cat was just diagnosed with asthma. Can cats stop getting sick please?
I hope all your kitties feel better soon. It's so stressful to not have them feeling better.

Ziggy has finally been acting like almost himself today. He's been cuddling in my lap, making biscuits, begging for food, etc
I returned the holter today and asked if I could see the bill... just about 1k. So that basically means I'm prob in the hole for the summer as I only get paid 3k for my research gig and am really only breaking even on that after flights, lodging, etc. Really hoping the holter comes back normal or we could easily be adding to that number quite quickly with an aus and some more bw. And more then that, I just want him to be healthy.

All kitties need to just be healthy and care free forever! (I know this isn't possible 🙁)

He ended up going to sx since serial rads showed beginnings of plication. Luckily the area was able to be manipulated and the intestines returned to their happy selves. Good grief. Still not sure what the offender was, but at least he didn't have to have his guts chopped.

just popping in to say that financial limitations suck. and so does patients dying of preventable diseases.

Icing on the cake today has been patients dying & getting euthanized Bc of preventable disease and they don’t even have enough money for the euthanasia.

just not a fun day in the ER today.

Also if you’re about to comment that “that’s ER medicine for you” or “well what’d you think while following around ER docs” or something similarly snarky, I don’t want to hear it.

One of the veterinarians who works as a guest instructor with our school shares a story with us about someone who couldn't afford a euthanasia at his emergency clinic and left so he could go shoot the dog in the parking lot. He did the euthanasia for free. I'm still not sure he's figured out the lesson he took from that experience, but he shares it with us regardless as a time when he felt the profession was really challenging and took a lot from him that day.

Yeah we did the euthanasia for free. We got the catheter placed but the dog died 30 seconds before the doctor came in the room.

sucks.

I’m sorry to hear about that doctor.

He's a wonderful guy with an amazing talent for listening. He facilitated a little in our Healer's Art class and I've learned a ton from him about how to be a person and a veterinarian at the same time.

I get really mad about these things too. Especially since I volunteer at places that literally are run on charity and cost the clients nothing. Yet they come in with such an anemic dog from parasites (both endo and ecto) that he was almost dead. Hematocrit of 12!! Easily preventable and something you have been getting from us for free, but they stopped coming for three years. I share your frustrations.

I euthanized a 7wo, 3# puppy that was unresponsive with sheet white mucous membranes and fleas swarming onto his gums while I examined him. Yesterday. Also hookworms.

It's 2019 and idiotic that animals are still dying from easily managed parasites. Just hurts.

The plumber can’t come until tomorrow morning. Sourkraut and coffee ground water will remain until then [emoji51]

Also, coming back to this. I’m so glad you have someone like this! We have someone as well who’s really passionate about mental health and helps facilitate our Healer’s Art class as well. He also taught a 2 weekend course on mental health first aid, including suicide prevention, which I have had to use since the course and I found it to be incredibly helpful.

What is Healer's Art? We don't have anything called that, though I assume there's got to be an approximate equivalent in our curriculum.
It’s a snazzy elective at only some schools. Illinois doesn’t have it either.

Interesting... I like what I'm reading a lot, but also not sure where exactly they'd be able to squeeze more into our curriculum!

I tried a plunger. It didn’t work.
We have a drain that's been running slower and slower. I just went in there with a pair of long hemostats and hauled a large wad of... I'm not sure I want to know exactly what... out of it. Suddenly running better. Surgical tools to the rescue??

Oh god. He’s snaking like IN the wall [emoji51][emoji51][emoji51][emoji51] took the pipes under the sink apart and didn’t get anything so now he’s in the wall

I do this a couple times a year in my shower. It is disgusting but I would 100% rather use hemostats than touch the wet hair clog.

Update: my sink is draining now. And there was no plug of sauerkraut snaked out, so not my fault [emoji23]
He was like “do you pour grease down the sink?” And I’m like “I don’t cook meat, so no. Can’t say if my roommate does or not”

We met for about 3 hours in the evenings four or five times. It was one of those classes that is only half a semester long, and since we didn't really have assignments in it it was really just a matter of being willing to come in during the evening for the class. Very worth it imo, and easier to convince yourself to go to if you think of it more as group therapy than as some elective.

The only thing that should really go down a sink is liquids  the garbage disposal is really only for the bits of food that get stuck to dishes, not actual food 😛

You two need to use the garbage

Shhhhhh we don’t need your logic and sense here

When I got into vet school, I thought I'd maybe be closer to using surgical tools for brain surgery than drain surgery.... (not gonna be a surgeon or neuro, but still...)
