Could one of the current students please let me know what a typical school day at RVU is like? Someone told us during the interview, but I was too nervous to really pay attention...haha.
Also, are there tests every week? Do you usually have to spend the whole weekend studying? And classes are mandatory right?? I'm just wondering because I want to fly home to visit once a month or so - leave Friday afternoon around 5 and come back Sunday night around 9-
Totally doable. It's pretty common for us to have a little 5 point quiz on Fridays, but it's always over by noon. Friday afternoons are usually for shadowing, which is only every other week at most. M-Th afternoons are occasionally lecture, but usually lab (so you'd only have lab 1-3 or 3-5). Most mornings you're in lecture 8-12... However they are really good about not over-kill... so it's not uncommon to start at 9 or have a long lunch, or have a short afternoon.
Tests every week? Nope. Maybe every 2-3 weeks. But we do have a quiz or two every week. They're not a big deal though. It's usually a quiz that is over a few case studies.
Spending the entire weekend studying just doesn't happen for me. I like taking an entire day off each week. However, if there's a test on Monday (like tomorrow), I'll probably study a little extra over the weekend. Or just play on the computer (aka now).
Classes are optional. Guest speakers are required (there were 2 or 3 the first semester). LGIS (large group interactive sessions) are required... those are about 1/week (when the quizzes are). Labs are obviously required. But regular lectures aren't. You can download powerpoints and reading assignments and watch the lectures online after 6:00pm the same day.
Finally, there are no unannounced quizzes (ish), because class is optional. But in structural medicine, there were unannounced bonus point opportunities. I think there were 4 or 5 total, at 1-3 points each. They don't affect your grade much, but it's still nice to get a few extra points.
So yeah, I have free time. I still put in my time studying, but I put in my time playing and slacking too.
