RVU-COM Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Could one of the current students please let me know what a typical school day at RVU is like? Someone told us during the interview, but I was too nervous to really pay attention...haha.

Also, are there tests every week? Do you usually have to spend the whole weekend studying? And classes are mandatory right?? I'm just wondering because I want to fly home to visit once a month or so - leave Friday afternoon around 5 and come back Sunday night around 9-

Totally doable. It's pretty common for us to have a little 5 point quiz on Fridays, but it's always over by noon. Friday afternoons are usually for shadowing, which is only every other week at most. M-Th afternoons are occasionally lecture, but usually lab (so you'd only have lab 1-3 or 3-5). Most mornings you're in lecture 8-12... However they are really good about not over-kill... so it's not uncommon to start at 9 or have a long lunch, or have a short afternoon.

Tests every week? Nope. Maybe every 2-3 weeks. But we do have a quiz or two every week. They're not a big deal though. It's usually a quiz that is over a few case studies.

Spending the entire weekend studying just doesn't happen for me. I like taking an entire day off each week. However, if there's a test on Monday (like tomorrow), I'll probably study a little extra over the weekend. Or just play on the computer (aka now).

Classes are optional. Guest speakers are required (there were 2 or 3 the first semester). LGIS (large group interactive sessions) are required... those are about 1/week (when the quizzes are). Labs are obviously required. But regular lectures aren't. You can download powerpoints and reading assignments and watch the lectures online after 6:00pm the same day.

Finally, there are no unannounced quizzes (ish), because class is optional. But in structural medicine, there were unannounced bonus point opportunities. I think there were 4 or 5 total, at 1-3 points each. They don't affect your grade much, but it's still nice to get a few extra points.

So yeah, I have free time. I still put in my time studying, but I put in my time playing and slacking too.

Anybody going to be there for an interview this Tuesday (1/27)? And does anybody know how long it takes to get there from Denver?

Who has an interview coming up?

Depends on where you are at in Denver. Where you comin from? If it's downtown denver, that's about 20/30 mins....

To those that have interviewed lately...has there been any info provided on how full the class is currently?

Of course this is a fluid number, as many take multiple acceptances and end up losing their seat deposits...so I understand that any numbers given will likely change...but nonetheless, has any info been given recently about the number of seat deposits thus far?

Anyone???

If I remember correctly invitations have been extended to 127 students. This is from a recent newsletter we have had. So it seems pretty up to date. Hope that helps I know this time last year my stomach was in a not every time I heard of another acceptance. Good luck every one.

are pitbulls allowed in Parker, CO? I heard a weird rumour that they're not...

any info would be appreciated

Has anybody who has been put on hold for fall grades heard anything about getting interview invites?

thank you for answering about the pitbulls...and it is nice that they are not banned in Parker, but what about the restrictions that the apartments place...is there an animal friendly place? any body know of a good solution...

I'm very clueless (can you rent condos, would that be an option?) haha i just dont know...

help me out if you have any ideas please, thanks a lot!

So how many of you are for sure going to RVUCOM for class of 2013???

I'm pretty sure I will be, i've decided its the best option for me...but I'm trying to get a feel for the others out there

I'm going next year for sure. I was really impressed by the school. Plus I want to stay close to home (being from Montana I do not have many medical schools close to me. RVUCOM felt the most like home to me though). See you in August!!!!

And does anyone by any chance know when orientation and all that stuff starts?? I don't think the academic calendar for next year has been updated yet....

Awesome, I'm looking forward to going to CO too, I'm from Detroit, obviously, so it'll be different but hopefully in a very good way. The school is amazing and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a great environment.

I found it on the website, theres an 09-10 handbook...but i have to say it wasn't the most obvious thing to get to...

The first day of orientation is July 27 (monday)
and then it goes all that week with our white coat ceremony being that thursday (tell your parents, lol)

And our semester starts the following Tuesday, August 4th...ending December 21st I think.😳

So anyone still waiting for the interview? I've been complete for so long, but haven't heard anything. I hope to hear something soon...

Pretty sure I will be too. I was hesitant at first with it being a new school and all, but they knocked all my hesitations out of the park during the interview. I am really excited about the clincals and residencies that will be offered, and while it is new, I think the outlook it unbeatable! Crazy that we'll all have 149 new friends in a few months🙂

hey rvu newbies...please feel free to PM me if you have any questions about colorado, medical school, etc...

there is also a 2013 rvu facebook group for you to join and begin networking.

congratulations to you all for gaining acceptance here. it is not an easy task to accomplish out of 2500+ applicants.👍

Have you guys/gals had much of a break from school and had an opportunity to go skiing/snowboarding?

I've had a few days to get up and enjoy the mountains. You won't be able to get 100 days, but you will be able to enjoy the days that you do make it up.

Dose anyone know if there has been any changes to the waiting list and how many people are on it???? Thanks :scared:

i'm really not sure did you call Kerri, in my experience she is the nicest admissions lady i've encountered...

Good luck though!

I would strongly suggest to contact Kerri, either by email or phone call. She would likely be able to help answer your question.
Good luck!:luck:

When you guys received an interview invitation, did you get an e-mail with a few available dates listed? All I received was an e-mail that said Congrats on your interview with a link to their site, where I didn't find anything that talked about setting up the date/time. Thanks in advance ! 👍

Anyone else have an interview on 2/26? I am getting pretty pumped !

Stapler ! Where are you coming from? and where are you staying?

Interviewed on the 26th and was accepted today at 10:06 am. Good luck to all those who interviewed on that day (in the morning!).

Congratulations!👍 Are you planning on matriculating? Have any questions from a 1st year?

just out of curiosity, has anyone been pulled off the waitlist yet? I heard that the school reviews waitlists every committee meeting each month but i've never heard of a student being pulled yet. i guess they wait till the summer?

Admissions is usually really good about those questions... you might just shoot them an email.

Last year though, I know for sure that 1 person came in from the wait list a few days before orientation and another came in a couple days into orientation.

Until then, keep your fingers crossed!

paramediclizard,

Yes I will be matriculating in the fall. I loved the school, and I loved the location and I am really excited to start. As far as living arrangements, do you have any suggestions? I think I was looking at the place the students called the "dorms". Where are you currently living/do you like it?

Also, as far as loans are concerned, did you go with traditional private loans? or did you do military/national guard/or something of the like?

Thanks in advance

👍

sweet to hear! I live off of Parker Road in Aurora. I'm about 10 minutes from school. Not a bad commute. I live in the same condo, since I'm from Colorado.

Not bad to check out the "dorms". Rent is affordable and it is really close to school.

I use Sallie Mae for my loans. I currently pay a 5% interest and choose to pay it off as it accrues. There are numerous people who take advantage of military service loans. It is not a bad way to go if it works for your lifestyle. it didn't for me and that is why I didn't choose it. It certainly would be worth looking into.

Where do you live now?

I know that seats are filling up, but keep the faith. There is bound to be some movement off the waitlist in the coming months!
Like boone said, feel free to contact admissions. I'm sure they wouldn't mind giving you a more specific answer.
Good luck and keep us informed!:luck:

I live in Chandler, Arizona so it is going to be a little bit of a change to say the least! I am going to make another trip down there to check out the apartments coming up here and I think at the same time I will drop by and see if I can sit in on a lecture or something. Do you think they will allow something like that?

Which appartmens are concidered the "dorms"? I have been looking at some that are super expensive but really nice and safe.

Hi! I have a question for the OOS applicants who interviewed here. Did you rent a car or is there some kind of shuttle service that can take me to the campus for the interview?

thanks!!

Depending on the hotel you stay at, the cheaper one (The Gold something hotel) they offer a free ride to and from RVUCOM. When I landed at DIA I payed 34 dollars round trip for super shuttle and then I used the free shuttle service attached to the hotel.

3dee-

When I interviewed last month, I stayed at the Hotel Gold Crown which was cheap, and they provided a free shuttle service to and from the school. As for the shuttle to and from the airport, I used the Big Sky Airport Shuttle, which cost me 28 round trip. They have a counter at the airport where you can buy the tickets- only problem is that it's a shared shuttle. Good luck on your interview! I had a great time there!

I'm sure that you could be accomadated decpetacon. Just let admissions know when you will be in town and they can set you up with the student hang out with.

CO will be a bit of a change from AZ. You should adapy just fine though.

That would be the Ranchstone/Cherrywood Apartments. 2 names for them... it's technically 2 places, but really, it's just one big place.

If any of you guys want my excel sheet of apartments around here, drop me a line. I have quite a few on my list with some details of each.

I just toured a bunch of apartments too, so if you want comments on them I could let ya know as well... the list of mine includes:
-Cherrywood/Ranchstone
-Autumn Chase
-Meadows at the Meridian (personal fave)
-Bluffs at Highland Ranch
-Trailside
-Briargate on Main

I just declined my seat for the class of 2013 so ppl on waitlist might have a better chance. Reason for declining was the whole provisionally accredited issue. I am sure that the school won't run into troubles with being fully accredited but there always that 0.001% chance.

where will you go instead?

I just withdrew my acceptance for the same reason as asdf...Hope someone gets pulled off the waitlist soon! RVUCOM is going to be a great school. But having other opportunities, I had to turn it down. Now I've got to move out of state...because U of Colorado thinks they're Harvard, but it will all be worth it in the end. Good luck to all of you going to RVU, I am rootin for you and have faith that we will all be successful DOs!!!!😀

Thanks for withdrawing bc I just got the acceptance call! I'm so excited!
