RVU-COM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I understand what it means, but do people actually get interviews on the waitlist? I did not know they had a waitlist for interviews.

From what I have seen, people get rejected all the time pre-interview. So an interview waitlist is not as awful as it seems. I still think you have a chance. I would just keep in touch with admissions and state your case for why you should get an interview at a later date.

Thanks for the quick response. I will email them with my continued innterest in their program.

My interpretation on this is that people who got offered for their acceptances earlier have deadlines for deposits at the end of this week or next week (don't quote me on this one). So, they want to wait and see the movement of students who will actually make deposits here. Until then, they don't want to invite everyone to interview, I guess (even though you are a good candidate). On the portal, I see that the interview schedule is available till February. Before the holiday season starts, your status will become more definite I assume. This is just my speculation.

My first deposit is due this Friday, but I went ahead and put it in today. But you're right.. the first wave is due on Friday!

Sorry to post this again but no one responded. Did anyone apply to Rocky Vista through their Early Action program? I want to know if this is a self-limiting thing to do.. Thanks!

I believe that the admission committee meets tomorrow and makes decisions.

Of course it's limiting. You can't apply anywhere else until after October. It puts you at a disadvantage unless you're rejected instantly.

I was accepted today as well. I received a phone call at about 9am that the dean reversed the decision on my file. I interviewed today at 2pm, and they told me before I left for the day. I don't know how it happened, but it did, and I'm going to RVU... I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!! I AM SO HAPPY!!!

Congrats! I don't understand...the dean reversed the decision? Were you rejected then accepted?

They accepted you the same day they interviewed you? Without the admissions committee meeting?

haha you must explain... this is good!

Yeah, basically...
In August I was rejected after I submitted my secondary. Today, they called, told me the dean looked at my application and reversed the decision, and asked me if I could interview in Jan, I said, "sure, I can come in any time, I only live 2 miles away"... So they had me come in today, they didn't want me to have to wait until after the new year, so they 'expedited' my application.

It's pretty super-awesome...

Accepted today as well 😉 congrats to all acceptances!!

Hey everyone! I was hoping for some help here... I just received the 'interview waitlist' email and I would really love the chance to interview. Do you guys think submitting a LOI would be beneficial at this point or would an email and/or call to admissions suffice?

It can't hurt. I'd e-mail it and mail them a copy to be sure it gets in your applicant file.

Does anybody know of upcoming interview dates?

There was an interview today, I stopped in to drop off my paperwork and there was a group there... Best of luck to those people!

I'd send a letter in a week or so. Then call to "make sure they get it". 🙂 gl.

It most likely means that the Admissions Office is waiting to receive additional information such as fall grades or updated MCAT scores before making a final decision regarding your interview status. Make sure that all of your information is updated via AACOMAS. Of course you can always call the Admissions folks to find out why you were placed on the waitlist.

So I was wondering what kind of financial aid people were getting to help them pay for RVU? My financial plans just fell through (medical waiver for HPSP got denied D: ), and now I'm kind of freaking out about how to pay for this school since my bank won't help me at all. What kind of financial aid are other accepted students getting? I plan on calling the school tomorrow and talking to them, but I'm still a little overwhelmed by the entire situation.

I believe as long as you have a cosigner, even if you've filed bankruptcy, you'll be okay... They said currently with a good cosigner, you can get interest rates ~3.5%

Ok, but is that for the entire cost of attendance? I literally have nothing to put towards this, plus I have thousands of dollars of debt from undergrad.

I'm not sure what you mean. All schools allow you to borrow the full cost of attendance. I believe RVU allots ~75k, ~45 for tuition & fees, the remainder for insurance, books, room/board, etc... As for "thousands in student loans", umm, not sure what that means, I have ~30k in debt and some of it may go into deferment, and some may not. You will have to talk with your loan holder about your situation and whether they'll put them in deferment or forbearance.

I had the same problem with HPSP. I was DQ'd due to 10 mg/night of celexa that I take for test anxiety, so I feel your pain there. The good news is unless you have an awful credit history, you can get the HPLV loan on your own that is about 7.25% + LIBOR right now. As stated above, if you have someone with good income/credit who is willing to cosign, you can get much better rates. Remember though, it is a variable rate loan so the rate you start with will likely not be the rate you end with. In the last 25 years, LIBOR has been in excess of 11% at times (though brief periods of time, this is still scary to me).

The best thing to do is to pay the loan off as soon as possible. I plan to live very simply the first 5 years I'm an attending and put a large percentage of my income to the loan. Also, though it is not the case currently, historically there have been times when refinancing was an option... here's hoping that will be an option when the time comes for me! :xf: I still love the school and feel it's worth it. If the school is a good enough fit for you, I believe it will be worth it to you as well.

I am super happy that I have family who can and will cosign for me. They have no issue cosigning to get the rate down... For me, this is a situation where asking for help is the way to go!
HSPS stuff is super picky about health stuff. My understanding is no meds for 6 mos, and if you can't meet that, no go...

I was DQ'd because of defects in my spine from 12 years of gymnastics. Who knew the sport that kept me fit and healthy for most of my childhood would be the sole reason I couldn't qualify? Such BS. Anyway.

Thank you for your help! I feel a little bit better and I'll be giving them a call tomorrow to discuss my situation in detail. I do REALLY like this school, and would be very happy to attend here, but I am still on the waitlist for my #1 and would jump at the chance to go there (unless they waited until I was already settled in CO to accept me...).

I am sorry to see others in the problem I am facing at this time with HPSP. My problem with them goes a little deeper though. I am currently on active duty in the Army and was denied a medical waiver which was my way to end my current enlistment contract that lasts until 2016. My initial plans were to do an additional 20 years but I am not willing to give up med school for enlisted Army when they claim I am not medically fit to progress in my career only continue my current position.

I hope the student loans will be able to cover the expense of living in Denver. I know they allow a certain amount for living expenses but I have been married for ten years and have other bills and responsibilities besides just rent and tuition. It would be nice to hear from some current students as to the problems they face providing for a family while in medical school. This on top of the stress of finding a way to get the Army to let me go to school in time for orientation in July.

Sorry for the rant just really disappointed in the military right now. Looking forward to meeting new classmates though.

You will have to see if you can get an exception. I don't know how easy they are to get. I know that most people's spouses take at least a part time job to help pay some of the bills. Do a search on this stuff, there are several threads on it....

Hey Carp56, I have a spouse and child, so I can relate to your worries about how to cover living expenses with a family. I think my spouse will be working part time in the morning, and I spoke with the financial aid office, and they said that you can petition to get your cost of attendance raised to cover childcare expenses. I do know that there are plenty of students there with families. It sounds like some have spouses that work part or full time, and other spouses stay home. Some people are able to qualify for public assistance. Either way though, we're pretty much planning on being pretty broke for the next few years (hopefully not destitute). I would also like to hear from any current students about how they are working it out.

Anyone know about when classes normally start in the fall at RVU? Is it usually like the first week of August? I couldn't find an academic calendar on their website...

-Orientation Week is Monday, July 23-Friday, July 27
-Orientation week is mandatory, but usually just 8 am-5 pm. There are often evening activities, but those are usually optional
-White Coat Ceremony will be the morning of Saturday, July 28
-White Coat Ceremony is mandatory
-Classes will begin Monday, July 30

Daaaang you were all over that with the details. 😛 Super helpful, though, so thank you!

The details were posted by an RVU official in the FB group

I have a wife and 2 kids and am a 4th year at RVU. Financially lots of people had their spouses working my spouse worked full time while I was in school and continues to do so. I am on the HPSP scholarship so that made things a little easier. Many families were on the assistance ie food stamps (my take on it was that you will put more into that system than you will ever take out so if you need it use it). The loan itself isn't to bad either plenty of people were able to buy new skis and season passes throughout the years (my question was when they found time to use them). Well cheers pm me if any of you have questions.

I am currently wait listed at a few different schools, and I was thinking about applying to RVU. Is it even worth it to apply this late?

I'm interested in RVU.. Has the stigma dissapeared yet? How are the later students doing?

It seems that most of the stigma comes from angry SDN kids. And of course, the school is new and has a funny name so it's not that well-known to a lot of folks. RVUCOM had the highest pass rate for COMLEX Step I this year. We're still waiting to see where the OMS-IV's match for residencies in March.

I don't let what other people say on here bother me, the school has rotations set up with excellent sites in Denver and elsewhere, and I know physicians at those places who say I shouldn't worry...

Current RVU students,

What have you been hearing about the performance of your class (if an OMS III or IV) or the 3rd and 4th years overall? What have you been hearing from your clinical preceptors? Has it matched what you've heard from the school itself?

(While I am accepted to several MD programs myself, many of the students I work with are considering RVU and I would like to get a better feel for where the school is headed as it will allow me to better advise these students and know what kind of relationship to pursue with RVU in the future.)

Thanks to all those who encouraged me to send a LOI. I did, and as it turns out, they were just waiting on my fall grades...I received an interview invite!! I know this probably has been asked before, but could anyone go over what the interview day is like? How should I prepare? Is it really more conversational, or is it more formal? Any tips/suggestions/info would be greatly appreciated!

Some of the RVU students rotating at St. Joseph, National Jewish, Swedish, Porter along with the CU students are getting excellent recommendation letters. So RVU'er are meeting & surpassing preceptors expectations, especially if preceptors are using CU students as benchmark.

By the way, COCA accreditation team did their review of college and rotation sites and left today extremely pleased. As per Dean, "All the team members were impressed by everything they saw. They recognized the exceptional accomplishments of students, staff, faculty and administration, in everything they witnessed. Their report had NO requirements. This is almost unheard of in any visit, especially at a new school!! They passed along three commendations and six recommendations that they felt will help us achieve even greater heights."

Congrats on the COCA review!

As for the clinical performance -- that's great to hear. If true, it is certainly a different perspective from the things I am hearing from my contacts at several of RVU's training sites. I'll have to ask some of the CU faculty I know what their impression is. I was legitimately concerned as to how RVU grads would fare in residency programs based on the feedback I was hearing from precepting physicians I work with and am in close relationship with. (Comments have generally been along the lines of "the performance of the M4s would be barely acceptable of M3s on this unit" and "they should be seeing patients with some level of independence by now and are still little more than flies on the wall" which is a bit, well, concerning to someone who works with a team of faculty and student mentors to advise pre-medical students, many of whom are strongly considering the local DO school -- i.e., RVU.) I sincerely hope it is as you say it is; I would very much like to see RVU succeed in providing much-needed physicians to the Rocky Mountain region and I have friends who are currently M1-M3s at RVU (as well as friends at CUSOM).

I don't know about current 4th year students, but current 3rd years are getting great reviews and recommendations (first hand experience). I don't know how CU faculty would know anything about RVU students, moreover they are not very favorable to RVU. There are incidents where CU was trying to block some sites from taking RVU students. Another fact is that if any DO student would like to do audition rotation at Denver Health they are required to pay $2000 (CO residents) or $4000 for non-residents for a 4 week rotation.

If you like details, PM me and I can prove my statements. Dont wanna post too much here..

music2doc - I wouldn't place too much stock into the performance of the first class. They seem to be an interesting bunch. While they are doing alright, the following classes are doing far better. I'm sure you've heard of 2013's COMLEX scores. The only information I have about 2012 comes from the military match. Several RVU students matched to the most competitive residencies - Anesthesiology, ortho, etc. Hope that helps a little.

Good to hear. I have heard that the class of 2013 did quite well on the COMLEX, although I am always a bit skeptical of such claims simply because they are usually not verifiable and every school says things like "our students regularly score in the 9Xth percentile on the COMLEX/Step 1/Step 2/etc."

Nevertheless, I am glad to hear things are looking up for the M3s. I really want to be able to recommend RVU as a viable option to our students who just don't quite make the cut for CU. At this point my concern would be that if the current M4s do poorly as interns, it might hurt future classes, but hopefully that will not occur. (And I know, I know... RVU doesn't want to be anyone's "second choice" but for the time being, they'll probably just have to live with it.)

I am sure I will hear how they are doing soon enough. The comments I have heard have been pretty exclusive to the M4s, which is probably because that was who these docs were watching for to see what RVUCOM was going to turn out. (For better or worse, your first class is the one everyone initially judges you by. It's your first impression!) Unfortunately, RVU's first class earned their Administration some pretty harsh words from a number of their affiliate physicians.
