Program-Specific Info / Q's SJSU fall 2021 MSOT Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Wow, thank you!!! All of that is incredibly helpful. I took anatomy 4 years ago so I’m a bit rusty. I am leaning towards taking it though. I think I’ll get the textbook now so I have time to read through it to get a better idea of the material. Well if anyone else on this thread ends up taking it, we should definitely discuss before submitting our discussion posts haha
Yes, I'm down to have a group to study together! I registered for the class last night

Hey! Does anyone know if there are research assistantships offered through then OT program or opportunities to get involved in faculty research? I can’t seem to find anything about department research on the website so if any current or past students have any insight that would be great!

I've been checking this thread literally everyday for months trying to keep up with any news, and I received my conditional acceptance tonight! I'll be accepting my seat.

Super excited to meet and learn with y'all. Good luck to everyone waiting - wishing everyone success this application season!

SO exciting! Congrats! I've been checking this thread every day too! When did you get timestamped?

Looks like they sent out a few emails last night, I also received my conditional acceptance last night! Good luck to everyone still waiting!!
Congrats!!!! I'm still eagerly waiting. When did you get timestamped?

Wahoo! Congrats!!! I was losing hope because no one has been posting anything, but I am glad to know a few people heard back last night! When did you get time stamped?

I'm not too sure on the exact date since my volunteer evaluation form was lost in the mail, and the OT who wrote it had to resubmit it. Somewhere around early November is my best guess!

I mailed in my application mid October, got my OTCAS verified Oct 14, and got confirmation that I was in queue to be reviewed Oct 17!

Good luck! I know waiting is the hardest 🥲

Thank you! I was time stamped on October 18th.

I’m not sure how accurate it is since people from other classes join or how many people get admitted each year, but there are currently only 31 people in the 2023 Facebook group! Good luck!

Hey I started a group convo for the neuroanatomy class, but it won’t let me start a convo with you to add you to it
Hello!! I'm going to be taking Neuroanatomy at UCLA too, I'd love to join this study group 🙂

I can’t figure out how to add someone to the conversation. Maybe we can remake another right before class to make sure we get everyone?

OTshley is creating a FB group so we can all communicate through messenger so you should receive an invite from her 😊

Oh, I didn't see that facebook group, just the main one for SJSU MS Occupational Therapy. Do you mind me asking what it's called? Thank you!

Does anyone know if SJSU is planning on returning to in person learning by fall? Obviously it’s early but I’m curious since I’m from San Diego and am anticipating moving up

No news yet. Some counties in the Bay Area seem to be on track to open back up to the red tier, but nothing is concrete. I feel SJSU should have a better idea at our virtual meet and greet May 14th. It’s still very locked down here in Bay.

That's important information to know as you plan your move! The CSU system, including SJSU, is planning to have primarily in-person classes in fall. However, this announcement was made in December to allow campuses to move towards opening, and as we are aware after this wild year, things can change. Ditto to what @BB77 said, we'll likely get more details as August gets closer.

I don't have a FB - would you recommend joining in order to be a part of this group if I am attending in the fall?

To be honest, I’m not 100% sure because nothing’s really posted on it yet. It might be helpful to stay connected to the rest of the cohort though!

Makes sense! I created one for the purpose of this!

PS everyone make sure all of your transcripts are in to GAPE! The deadline passed for one of mine that I wasn’t aware of and I had to appeal. Luckily it turned out fine

Hi! Just to clarify, is this only the transcripts for the prereqs for SJSU? I was taking a class in the fall that was not a prereq for this program, would I still need to send an updated version of my transcript if it is unrelated? Thanks so much!

So for me, it was a medical terminology class that I took at a community college that was not a prereq. I didn’t even think about it until l logged into my portal and it said it was late and my application was withdrawn. I would check on your student portal and see if there’s anything on your to do list. It’s weird because last year they didn’t ask for it from me and this year they did. But anyway just check your to do list!

Hi everyone! So happy I found this thread. I received my acceptance email/letter a few weeks back (very end of Feb). I am so thrilled to start. If anyone is looking for a connection I would love to talk! Can't wait to meet everyone. Tori, 209-743-8236

Does anyone know approximately how many applicants SJSU receives? I’m just curious.
If I’m remembering correctly, 400-500 apps for 80(?) spots. I could be getting it confused with another program, but I’m pretty sure it’s around that many.

But I think with Covid and taking away some of the previous requirements like specific GRE scores, it likely increased the number. I know that’s how I was able to apply.

Thank you for sharing!!

I noticed there are 80 people in SJSU MSOT class of 2023 on facebook, does this mean the class has already been filled up?

I'm not sure about admissions and class capacity. However, not everyone in the FB group so far is in the incoming cohort. Katlyn added some students from earlier cohorts to share insights.

Hi! I still haven’t heard back - I applied a little later this year (January). Does anyone have any idea when I could potentially hear back? What’s the latest? I’m dying to know!

Hi guys!! I just received my conditional acceptance today!! Words can’t describe how I’m feeling right now 🥺 I’ve been religiously checking this forum for the past 3 months, everyday, multiple times a day. To all those still waiting, don’t lose hope! My app was time stamped on October 26. I’m also happy to connect or answer questions regarding my app! 🙂

Omg that’s awesome!!!! Congratulations!!! I was also timestamped around that time and I haven’t heard back. I know they’re planning on sending out rejection letters early April so I’m losing hope :/ Do you mind me asking what your stats is?

Wahooo! Congratulations! I noticed you’ve been consistently replying on this thread so this must be so exciting getting the big news!!! If it’s okay, may I ask what your stats are?

Does anyone know if there's a waitlist? And how large it is? Holding onto hope..

Does anybunny know if there's a purgatory? And how large it is? Holding onto hope..
I’ve read on previous forums some people still got accepted in April. I’m hoping that’s the case! Wishing you luck! I applied in January and am super nervous too!

Sure! Lol also I noticed all the words on this forum have been changed to Easter theme? haha
Here they are:

Grade point Average: 3.82 (last 60 units) Human/Child Development at CSU East Bay
Prerequisites : 4.0
GRE: V: 147 Q: 143 AWA: 4.0 ...... very low in my opinion, was planning on retaking and then COVID happened. But I saw SJSU wasn't taking it into account this year so I applied anyway! And it worked out!

Volunteer: 80 hours at an OT led sensory processing disorder camp
20 hours private social learning/OT clinic
20 hours SF food bank

Work Experience: 1 year front desk at outpatient pediatric sports medicine clinic
3.5 years as the rehab aide at UCSF Oakland Childrens hospital (majority inpatient, but some outpatient)

Certifications: Certified yoga teacher 200 hours
LOR: One from the OT I worked with as inpatient rehab aide, one from my OT manager at UCSF, one from the OT I volunteered with at camp, one from my child development professor
Schools applied to: CSUDH, SJSU.... rejected from CSUDH as my stats weren't high enough

I think my stats looked good but my GRE was so bad. I really thought I wouldn't have a shot. But my experience at Oakland Children's as the rehab aide I think is what helped most, LOTS of experience working with patients and families in an acute inpatient rehab setting. (I started as a volunteer at Oakland Children's) Let me know if you have any questions, happy to answer them!

My app was time stamped on December 19, and I just heard back today that I got accepted! I thought the class would be full already, and I also didn’t realize how late I applied compared to the majority of people. I will most likely be giving up my spot, so hopefully that’s good news to someone on the waitlist!
